Trying To Fill Differential
GaryZ posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK guys, I have drained the differential and calculated that the refill is 300cc or 10oz (.3L per the manual). My problem is the fill plug doesn't want to come loose. It appears to be a 6mm female hex head and my allen wrench only wants to twist. I have soaked it in penetrating oil for now . . . Any ideas?- 9 replies

I dunno what I'm going to do about the clutch noise on my RSV. It came with a "G" clutch basket, the dealer installed the "I" basket, I went today and had them remove the "I" and was gonna put my old one back in. I asked if they had any other clutch baskets around and they had an "H" basket that they had replaced. I asked if they could put that in since it couldn't be any worse than the others. They did and it may have helped a tiny bit but it's still too noisy. I think that the next thing to try might be another differential. I'm thinking that some of the howling is coming from there since there's been no joy with the clutch baskets. Another Valkyrie is looking better and better......sigh....or a Victory Cross Country..... or a G'wing.

Has anyone felt their rear differential after a ride to see how hot it gets. I've never really paid attention to mine in my Millenium. I see that some of the older diffs have cooling fins on them, but the newer ones don't. My issue: I put a 2008 Venture rear (the whole pumpkin - after machining the hole in the boss for the shock and plugging the speedo sensor hole) into my 1998 VMax to lower the rpms. Seems to work well and I like the 500 or so lower rpms at highway speed. Gas mileage is better too. But the diff seems to get pretty doggone hot to the touch after a ride. Now I know that I live in the south and it has been really hot lately. But I've had this bike since '99 and I didn't notice that heat with the original set-up. Could have been hot too, just never boticed it. I hear no cracking or creaking going on back there. Do you think I have something discombobulated? Any ideas?

Just installed a new (only 67 miles on it) 2008 RSV differential in my 1998 VMax. I know it's popular to swap these ring and pinions back and forth between the two bikes. VMax owners want to lower rpms at freeway speeds and the Venture guys want more pull and to keep the revs up a bit. I didn't send mine off to RMS Sportmax for the gears to be swapped. The shock boss is already on the Venture differential, so it's easy to see where to drill the stepped and tapped hole (if you already have a VMax diff for a pattern. I just removed the shock mounting stud from my VMax diff., used the mic to measure all of the stud's shaft dimensions, thread size and depth, and machined me a hole and tapped the threads in the Venture housing. I installed the shock bolt and made a cover for the Venture's speedometer sensor hole. Took the bike out for a spin today and enjoyed the reduction in rpms at highway speed. Even though these engines don't really vibrate around 70-75mph, riding the VMax in that range now seems to be kinda relaxing. I think the rpms dropped about 500 or so, but am not sure. I can't really remember, but I think it used to turn 4000 at 65 mph and now turns about 4000 rpms at 75 mph. I may just drill a speedo sensor hole in the VMax diff and install that on my RSV just to see how the bike likes the lower gearing. That kinda stuff is what happens when my wife is remodeling the kitchen and I'm staying out of her way. I just pay the bills and head to the garage to "tinker a bit". Oh well, these are the kind of posts you get from me when I'm bored on nightshift. Rusty

I have a 2006 Royal Star Venture. Are there directions anywhere on VentureRider.org on how to do things like locate the oil drain plug, change the oil filter (tools to use), change the rear differential oil, location of the most common lube points, what viscosity of oil to use in the engine and what viscosity to use in the rear differential, how to get to and change the spark plugs (along with the spark plug gap), and anything else to do in a 8000 mile servicing. A service manual or a PDF file of a service manual would be handy, eh? Thanks, ToolmanRR ( ToolmanRR at Yahoo dot c o m )

Started to put my bike back together today and got a little surprise. I had not bothered to clean the drive shaft or differential when I removed it several weeks ago because I didn’t expect anything to be wrong with them after only 12,000 miles with no apparent symtoms. Cleaned the drive shaft with brake cleaner, scrubbed it good with scotch-brite, hit it with brake cleaner again, and blew it off with the air gun. Got out the magnifying glass and found it to be a piece of junk. I have some experience in metallurgy and expected to see a wear pattern on the teeth, not cracks, chips, and uneven wear. When I removed the differential drain plug to flush it out with new fluid I found it covered with shavings. The gears in the differential look good. I got the bike last year with a few thousand miles on it and put an additional 7,000 on it. I suspect this 9 year old bike has never had any maintenance done before I picked it up – regardless what the last owner said. Has anybody had this experience or seen a drive shaft with this kind of wear? (see attached pictures)

First of all, I'm not much of mechanic but have been studying everyone's experience and decided to get give it a shot. Today I pulled the differential on my 2000 RSV after I removed the wheels to install my new Avons. That went pretty well using my new Carbon One adaptor and everyone's advice. But then, had a horrible time getting the drive shaft out of the differential. Ended up destroying the seal to get it off. Now, am struggling to get the rest of the seal off the shaft - have it soaking in some carb cleaner right now. Also, it appeared that the output end of the drive shaft (part that goes inside the pumkin after the seal) is lubed by rear end grease. Couple questions: Is there a better way to get that seal off the drive shaft? Why do you grease the output end of the drive shaft if it is bathed in differential grease? What do you have to leave on the rear wheel for the shop to install the new tire and balance? I have removed the disk brake rotors on all the wheels to protect them. (Found that a shot of WD40 on all the bolts as well as a slight tap with the ball peen hammer on the head of the bolt allowed them to be extracted pretty easy.) I have purchased some Honda Moly60 to grease everything when reassembling. Thanks in advance, Jinksy

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. Yamaha does not seem to be able to fix it so far. I have an 06 RSV with 30,000km that has just developed a clicking noise in the rear end. It only occurs when the bike is rolled backwards and only when the components are hot. Yamaha has dismantled the differential (rear end) replaced a suspect bearing, checked all the clearances but can not find anything wrong. I told them about the drive pin clearance/lubrication issues (discussed on this web site) however they believe the noise is coming from the differential. They are reluctant to replace the differential becauase they have already replaced two correcting another problem. This problem was not evident until the new differential had done over 1,000km. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Last week I had a rotational knocking sound between 5 and 10mph and a wobble on hard acceleration.Well I took the rear wheel off today to find the problem and I found that the wheel bearing at the differential was Gone and the drive cog in the differential was loose. Would a second gen still have gotten me home from a 300 mile run at 80 to 90 mph? Here are some pics of what I found and what the parts should have looked like The bike was still pulling strong and had very little symptoms. Jeff
