I'm wondering what effect this condition has on my poor gas mileage problem, and what it means. I took the diaphram covers off the carbs. All of the diaphrams had 2 to 5 pin holes in them, plus Carb 1 (left front), 2 (Left rear) and 3 (Right front) as your sitting on the bike, all had a film of dry dirty, greasy coating the inside surface of the covers, and the carb surface behind the diaphrams. The diaphram had a sticky feel to it like wet paint. ( probably partially disengrating rubber coating from previouse pin hole fixes with liquid rubber) #4 (right rear) was cleaner and wet with gas:confused24:

Adjusted the one tight intake valve on my 89, and figured that seeing that the Tupperware was all off, I may as well check the carb diaphrams. I had small holes in 3 of them---my bike only has 58K miles on it. I looked up Sirius and found that they were out of stock on diaphrams until the end of the month. While doing searches here on this site, I came across Snagletooth's message about using Plasti coat to make a temporary repair. Home Depot carries Plasti coat, so this morning I followed Snagletooths' proceedure and this afternoon I re-installed the sealed diaphrams. In addition to the Tupperware, both heat shields (the ones that are over each valve cover) were out, so it was real easy to change the spark plugs. Heck, I also found an open plug cap. I ordered replacements, but I took the bad one apart and convinced it to work by cleaning everything up. The resistance is a bit high (the resistor itself reads high), but it'll work until the new ones get here. Then the fun began. I started the bike up, and it sounded good when you opened the throttle, but it idled badly and slowly. I checked the carb sync, and it was all over the place. I synced the carbs (both on the right side were almost completely closed) and I had to slow the idle speed down quite a bit. I also had to adjust the idle mixture screws. Now it's idleing great. Those holes in the diaphrams sure had an effect on how the bike idled. BTW, I had adjusted the carb sync in May, and it was idleing what I thought was OK before I started on the diaphrams. Tomorrow morning I'll put it all back together and if it's not raining like they predict, I'll take it for a ride.

Any one out there had any experience with JBM industies carb. diaphrams? I have seen positive results here with the Sirusconic diaphrams. Just wondering how the JBM diaphrams compare. Price with shipping is nearly identical. Jeff

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I did a quick search and did not find an answer in the posts I read. I went to the Sirius website and discovered that they list two different diaphrams for my 1986 Venture Royale. One is a package of four SD1 diaphrams and the other is single SD10's. Anybody know which is the best one for my bike and what the difference would be. They look different from each other in the pictures. Price is similar.

I've a 2008 RSV that I've owned since brand new. This weekend, I decided to clean the carbs per some great instructions on this site. The diaphrams on the right side of the carb banks looked fine. However, both of the left side diaphrams looked DEFORMED... While the left diaphrams dont have any holes in them, the center hole looks deformed (larger...maybe swollen), and doesnt fit the slide as well as the right-side diaphrams do. The left side air box-to-airfilter hose was completely disconnected as well (back to my theory on 16-year old "technicians")... I'm going to order two new diaphrams for the left side.... QUESTION: What would be some of the issues I would have if the diaphrams were bad? Lower MPG...less vacuum...no power in 5th gear... I defer the to the wealth of knowledge on this site! Thanks!

Have a quick question for you all, I am trying to put the venture back together after the teardown for the 2nd gear and I have come to the point of putting the carbs back on the bike. I have also replaced the throttle cables and I just wanted to be sure I didn't miss something. So here is the question; Will the carb diaphrams slide when you twist the throttle while the bike is not running? Mine do not slide at this time?? thanks in advance. mike

I need to find the slide diaphrams for my 83 VR. I have found the complete slide assembly but I just need the diaphrams. I can't find any specificially for the Venture but I find them for XS and XJ11. Since they are both BS34 carbs are the diaphrams the same? I know the slide part is a different diameter so the assemblys will not interchange. Sirius Consoladated has some listed but out of stock now. Anyone have a set to sell or know another source for them.

Awhile back I ran into trouble by opening up the airboxs on my RSTD and I ended up putting it back to stock because there wasnt enough vacuum to work the diaphrams correctly. Last night I had the "bright Idea" to relocate the vacuum for the diaphrams out of the air box and into the rubber tubes leading to the plenum..... WOW was that a mistake. Now it seems I have TOO MUCH vacuum and the carbs dump to fast and cause the bike to bog really bad. SO it looks like back to stock once again.... theres got to be away to increase airflow while keeping the carbs working right. Anyone have any ideas (other than leave it the hell alone LOL)?

Bike has 35,000 on it. Bike sputters from 3500-4000 rpm's but then seems to smooth out after that. 70mph that I drive on my commute is right in this range. Carbs have been soaked, synced, and the diaphrams patched by my mechanic. He mentioned that it might need the needles replaced(He said it is not a fun or inexpensive job), or maybe new diaphrams. Other than that bike runs great and gets 40-45 mpg. Before I proceed I thought I would ask you guys. Thanks Doug

I have two questions about the diaphrams.... Question 1: I took a look at two of my diaphrams and one wasn't too bad. it was starting to get a little thin in a few areas, but not bad. It had some sort of lubrication on it, some sort of grease. The other diaphram has worn holes in it and no lubrication, it was dry. Is there some sort of lube that is supposed to be on them? Question 2: where is a place to get a decent price on 4 diaphrams? Thanks, Clay

Well, back from Iraq and ready to hit the road.... well almost. In my Brigade, we're required to go through the MSF course everytime we return from a deployment... so..... I buy a battery, go get my tags renewed and drive up to the class. Here I am sitting next to 5 Harley Davidsons on my 84 XVZ1200 with no side plastics. (a note.... when you leave for 15 months, leave the tupperware on the bike... one of my wife's friends backed over all my right pannier and all my side plastic except the left side engine cover piece) Anyway, I digress.... So I'm sitting there with the Harley (all under 2k on the odometer by the way) and the instructors start thier safety inspection..... guess who needs new tires? I drive away.... denied. On the way home I have several problems I have previously posted here. Well, since it will be another payday before I can get new rubber... I undertake the dreaded thorough carb cleaning. I got the carbs off the bike and so far I have checked the left side diaphrams, rubber is good, just very dirty. I'll be off to buy carb cleaner tomorrow. I dread splitting the carbs, I wish I could get to the bowls without disassembling any further , but I'll just have to have at it. While I'm in there, I plan on replacing all screws with hex head screws as suggested here. I looked a a couple of assorted metric o-ring packs at auto zone, and am not sure if I should go that route or Just clean the ones I have as well as possible. Also, as my diaphrams seem good, when I put the covers back on, should I use a thin coat of sealant around the edges or do the old diaphrams seal well enough.... I mean, the things are probably over 20 years. probably never been changed as the cover screws were all stripped out. Anyway, the long winded reasons for this post: 1) I originally had rags stuffed into the inlet holes after removing the carbs, but It seems my dog had nothing better to do today than remove them from the bike..... all four of them. I have since put heavy duty freezer bags over them and secured them with the hose clamps. I am somewhat concerned about what might have gotten in, as Colorado is extremely windy this time of year. Does anyone have any suggestions as to any precautions I should take before reinstalling the carbs? should I stick a vacuum hose in there before I put the carbs on? 2) Right now, the carbs are off, the front fairing is still in place and the seat is awaiting an ebay replacement. I'll hopefully be taking the wheels off soon, so I can take them up to have the tires changed (not allowed to drive the bike up to the local deal... sometimes the army sucks). Is there any maintenance that has probably been neglected that should be done while the bike is this far apart. I'm already planning on greasing the splines and changing final drive fluids, and would welcome any suggestions. Thanks for all the help you guys always provide. Mark PS: I don't suppose anyone has an Idea where I can get most of the 1st gen plastic for cheap? I was able to glue one lower fairing (L shaped piece), and the other is only missing about 2" of the end that attaches to the front plastic "crossmember" I can probably fiberglass something up for that one, but no luck at all on all the rest.

1st Gen Carb Diaphrams
MasterGuns posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There is a lot of posts concerning 1st Gen carb diaphrams being bad, how to repair them, how to replace them, places they may be obtained at varying costs, etc, etc. What I would like ask those that have much more experience than I concerning diaphrams on the lst Gen, is how does one know when one or more need replacing in the first place? What are the symptoms of a bad diaphram and should the diaphrams be regularily checked for issues? Also, if I were to find one bad can one be exchanged from a another set of carbs? Can only the diaphram be reutilized from another carb or would it be wise to exchange the entire assembly diaphram and slide together? Just curious. I don't have any carb issues at the present time but one never knows what the future may hold with a 20 year old bike. -
So now that everything is back together, well almost, I have a nagging problem. Had the motor out for second gear, cleaned the carbs but did not break them down, just took out the diaphrams, used carb cleaner all over and through out, installed new diaphrams and all seemed to be good. Balanced the carbs last week and now I can't get the idle below 1500. All carbs are balanced but I have a problem with #1. When I take the plug off of the vaccum port there is very little change in the engine. Not so with the others. When I took off #3 the engine almost died, #4 and #2 there is some change as would be expected but not enough to worry if the engine will die. I replaced the lower throttle cables but they are all slack, the idle speed screw is backed right out, I checked the chokes and they are all pushed in. Sometimes though, the idle will come right down and momentarily behave as it should, but mostly not and I cannot controll it. I need more ideas,,,,,,,

:sign09::sign09:Helpppppp. I'm trying to wrap up bike rebuild project in time to make it to Daytona. My Atl riding buddies pulled out this morning and Venturerider.org buddies are waiting and I'm still dealing with carb set up issues.:icon_smile_question:doh: So I'm asking, pleeding begging for help from you carb gurus in talking me through getting carbs set up. To help speed up the process I'm setting up the laptop in shop with web cam focused on project so those helping can see in real time video feed at the rate of 6 frames per minute. The link for video feed is http://Webcamnow.com/DragonslayerBob I will also be constantly monitoring this thread for feedback. Video cam should be online by 11:30am EST. To make it interesting and fun I'm make a contest out of it. The person most helpful in helping me get issues solved in time to make it to Daytona will win a prize of thier choice between Daytona Bike Week 2008 souvenier or a On Board Liquid beverage dispenser kit (My Invention and product) with on line instructions on installation. To get the ball rolling, this is where I'm at. The new motor is installed cranked and running, The air box is off, the diaphrams are all bouncing at different rates. The carbs have slow gas leak which is pooling around top lip of intake boots then dripping down. Choke is on. When I decrease choke and increase throttle engine bogs down and dies. During rebuild project I separated four carbs and installed new main diaphrams and coast enricher diaphrams, put back together and remounted to intake boots. What Do I Do Now?

Does anyone know or has anyone tried to exchange the diaphrams from the 83-85 carbs to the 86 to 93 carbs. In other words are they interchangable.

i have a 93 venture and i was cleaning out my carbs when i got to the diaphrams i notice there are three holes in the diaphram the holes are spaced far apart from each other it seems like they might belong there however on one diaphram the hole seems as if it has ripped wider than it is supposed to be. is this something that i should consider replacing? ive shopped around for them and they are kinda pricey. if i do need to replace them do you know any place where i can get them cheap or do any other ventures interchange the diaphrams? i will be posting some pictures a.s.a.p. so you can see what im talking about thank you, -mike

Hello All, Let me run this by you, and I will try to keep it short. I bought this '87 as a fixer upper. Right away I saw that I needed Carb Diaphrams -- wow over $200. I found what was supposed to be a rebuilt carb on ebay for $200. I asked if it had new Diaphrams, Needles and Seats, he said it did, so how could I go wrong. Got it and put it on -- had to turn the idle screws out 5 turns to get it to run. Decided my old carb was probly better, so today I put the diaphrams, needles and seats in my old carb after taking it apart and soaking it in Sea Foam for 4 days. It started like a champ. With the Filter and airbox cover off it rips. (This is all on the center stand) when I put the cover on it dogs out at about 4500 RPM --- air starved, me thinks. Just a note, I have not synced yet. I saw some talk on here about drilling th airbox and some hopping up procedures, could some of my parts be needing the airbox drilled or... Any observations are welcome. Thanks D

Does anyone have a link to a post (anywhere) that details the process of replacing/repairing the diaphrams (with pics) on a 1st gen?
