As some of you may have recalled, I had a tire blow last year while running through West, by God, Virginia. It was a Dunlop D404 that had been put on a couple of months previously. I was beating myself up for neglecting to check my tire pressure and was sure that was what killed it with 5581 miles on it. For a lot of expense (towing, hotel stay, tire, install, etc.) I was able to get another D404 installed so I could get home. That was the only tire available at the time. Well - IT ALMOST HAPPENED AGAIN! I was recently on a 4000 miles run around and was meticulously checking the tire pressure. It never varied from the original 40 lbs. However, as I was checking the tire pressure after getting gas, I noticed the tire wear was extreme. It was already down to, or below, the wear bars in the center of the tire. Thank goodness it was so windy that I wasn't running on the center of the tire. Since I was about half way across South Dakota and had a good 600 miles (most to be at night) to get home, I thought prudence would be the better part of valor. I pulled into a rest area and got on the phone and found a dealer in NorthWest Iowa with a - D404 tire!!! I had to get home and wanted to get there in one piece. When I punched the dealer address into my GPS, I noticed it would be 6:30 (they close at 6:00) before I got there. I pulled off the next exit to see if I could find a dealer any closer. Luck had me pull into Chamberlain, SD. I asked for a phone book but there were no M'cycle dealers listed. The clerk mentioned there was a Honda dealer the next exit down, I called and they had - an Elite 3 in the appropriate size. Apparently, that is what the Wings use. Showed up, they had me drive right into the shop, and the technician and I got to work. I took off the saddlebags, dropped the pipe, and took off the brake caliper. The tech started on the axle. We jacked it up with a standard floor jack balancing it against the kickstand. While the tech removed the dead D404 and installed the E3, he told me where the Moly60 was and I greased the splines. We reinstalled and I paid the standard bill (list price on the tire, but no complaints here). Slipped the tech a twenty on the way out for getting right on it and for letting me help. 45 minutes in and out with a new E3. OK, bottom line. I got lucky this time. The D404 was not designed for this bike - regardless what the Owners Manual says. The D404 that blew in WV had 5581 miles on it. I now firmly believe the WV tire died a natural death, not from neglect (although, I neglected to inspect for tire wear). This tire, when removed, had 4311 miles on it. Would it have made it another 600 miles? Maybe. But there will never be another D404 on my bike - if I can avoid it. Just a note on the E3. I felt the tire was not quite as smooth on groved pavement as the D404. Almost like it was a 'harder' tire. However, it might be that the tech did not balance the tire. I was in a rush and we both just forgot. I'll throw in some Dynabeads this weekend and that might help. It is a very small price to pay if I can actually make a trip and return safely with the same tires on the bike. The Darksiders almost had me coming over after this. We will see how the E3 works out. Hopefully, I will be able wear it out this year - by riding a lot!! RR

Well, I had to leave the darkside, just couldn't find the sweet spot for pressure and the wobble that kicked in at around 135 km became too annoying to live with. Swapped out my ct for a d404 this morning with a couple of ounces of dyna beads for balancing and life is wobble free again!!

On Dunlop's website they list the 404 as good for the 99-10 Royal Star Venture, but it is not listed for the 08 RSTD, so I asked then why I got this back as an answer. "Good morning Mike, Thank you for taking the time to contact Dunlop Motorcycle & ATV. The D404 original equipment tire is different from the after-market tire. The D404 original equipment tire is belted, the D404 after-market is not. The Elite 3 tires are belted and have a heavier load-carrying capacity" Really didn't answer My question but is it just me or does this make sense to anyone . A friend put 404's on his 06 and has no problem at all .. Maybe Im over thinking it ?

I ordered a D404 WWW tire on Rocky Mountain ATV, because they had the best price. I was assuming that the D404 WWW had the whitewall to the edge of the tire. The tire that they sent, however does not look like the picture. The description on the tire is D404 WSW. When I look on the Dunlop website, it appears that the D404 only comes in a WWW, but this tire is definately not a Wide Whitewall. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do;jsessionid=76C8C1F442BBE9670536DEE639C03ECB.westring1?webCatId=8&webTypeId=229&navTitle=TiresandWheels&navType=type&prodFamilyId=19444&stockId=140073&ref=gmc This is the site and the tire looks nothing like this. Did I receive the right tire? or did they change the Wide Whitewall Look? Thanks:confused07:

I finally replaced the original front Dunlop D404 after 18,497 miles. I was set on Metzler I have used them in the past with good results. However after reading many post on that matter here I was leery about them. The Venture is my first bike of this size and weight so I decided to go with the Dunlop Elite3. Has anyone switch from the D404 to the Elite3? It there any difference in handling better or worse? How about mileage? I am used to getting a few miles from my tires.

Reading up on tires over the last 2 months and still seeing D404 discussions, I just have to find out. I had 13,380 miles on my original D404s. Measuring the tread, I could have easily gotten upwards of 15,000 miles. I got new tires, mostly because, I was starting to feel a little shimmy in 60mph turns. I attribute that to a little bit of "wave" type wear on the edgees of the tread. I don't jump off the line. I keep about 40psi in the rear shock, keep the tires inflated within 2 psi of sidewall (but not over), and about 60% of the miles were 1 up. So I am just wondering, did I get more than average life out of my D404s? What are the riding habits of those that get less than 10,000 miles out of their tire?

Where's the best place to buy a tire, I need the rear, either a Dunlop, Bridgeston or Metzler? I tried Southwest Moto but I can't find a D404 150/90H15 or a 150/90HB15 all I can find is a 130/90H15. Thanks.

I purchased a set of Dunlop D404's for my '99 RSV on Aug. 13, 2007, (should have read the posts on this site!!) prior to my trip to Deadwood, SD. Since then I have traveled 7,000 miles and the rear is worn down the the indicator marks. I talked with the Service folks a Riders Edge Yamaha in Gettysburg, PA (a dealer that I know and trust). They tell me the D404 provided through the Yamaha Parts system is made of a different compound than the "over the counter/after market" D404 and should last longer. Does anyone have any input/information about the Yamaha vs. Aftermarket D404?

I am looking to replace front and rear tires on my 84 Standard. Currently running Dunlop D404's. I think they handle fine, but I am wondering if anyone else has anything great to say about another brand. Looking for mileage and decent price. American motorcycle tire will deliver a front and rear D404 to my house for $134.
