I need to replace the gasket on the left side crank case cover and I'm wonder what "special" considerations I need to be aware of. I've read and printed the service manual instructions and looked at a few pics on the site. After removing the multiple allen bolts that hold the cover on will it come off with the stator attached to the cover or do I have to remove the smaller cover first (with Yamaha emblem)? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Brian

At the end of the riding season last year, I bit the bullet and Installed a K&N Air Filter. Since the weather has been so bad here, (snowing again today, 3 ins. by morning) I have had an extended amount of time to do all of the things to my 87'VR that I would never do during the riding season. I removed the Air Box Cover and to my surprise there was a BIG messy oily spot on my brand new filter where the Crank Case Vent Tube enters the Air Box. I was not happy. Well the old 87'VR has 75,000 miles on it now and I figured that there is probably going to be some blow by. I remembered that on my 86' V65 Magna, before I rebuilt the engine I had the same problem and added a Crank Case Vent Filter and disconnected the Crank Case Vent Tube from The Air Box. So, I did the same thing on the 87'VR. The pics below show the plumbing that I removed, How I plugged the two holes in the Air Box, The New Vent Filter, and the final result. Any Questions, Feel free. Earl

Did a search and cant find anything that describes my probelm exactly. Ive just finished washing the bike and now it wont crank at all. Ignition on, kill switch on and press the start button, headlight dosent go out and temp light comes on. Tried it with the clutch in and the stand up but still no go. Hope someone here has had the same issue and can help with my problem. Just noticed that the speedo is iluminating but the odometer is'nt showing and the oil light is not on.

Any recommendations for what battery to buy for my 83 Venture. My battery passes all the tests at the auto store but won't crank the bike. Thanks Steve

Well, I think my starter is getting tired. I get a slow hot crank mostly and I sometimes get a slow cold crank, but def. slower when hot. I read somewhere that the ventures have a two brush starter and the vmax has a 4 brush starter. I guess I could take mine apart and clean it but it would probably just be easier go get another used one, tune it up and throw it in and keep spares.

Anyone know of this ????
FuzzyRSTD posted a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I saw this on the web and was wondering if any of you all have tried this ? Would this be of real use on these engines, or a no/no ? Claims to give better fuel mileage and looks good/good reviews and so on. But I know nothing of a crank case filter on these engines. So any and all information appreciated here. I would like to know more about a crankcase filter ? Thanks, https://www.denniskirk.com/emgo/crankcase-breather-filter-kit.p301754.prd/301754.sku#tabs Fuzzy -

Hi, I am looking at purchasing a 2004 Midnight Black RSV. I am wondering if anyone has had their bike dynoed and what HP is actually measured on the rear wheel? Yamaha says 98 but that is at the crank. Its a shaft drive so I figure minus give or take 20% so let's say 70 to 74 HP actual? Thanks Chris in Red Deer, Alberta

I ride my bike every week (2004 RSV); in the last couple of months my battery has lost juice and won't crank. As we speak I have it on low charge. Advance has checked the battery and says it just needs charging and nothing is wrong with the battery itself. The battery is two plus years old. Any ideas out there. When I crank up today I will have jumper cables with me but that ain't the solution.

I am in the process of replacing my battery. I hooked up the Argus Battery Bug this past weekend and it indicated that my battery has 22% life left. The Bug's instructions say at the 10% warning alarm imminent failure at anytime, replace battery immediately. Anyway, I have been looking at the Deka ext20L. In the process I see the Big Crank ext20L appearing to be the same battery. Are the Deka and the Big Crank batteries made by the same manufacture in Pennsylvania?

I left Lil'Red sit for a while. Now it won't crank again. Seems someone helped me with this once when I was cranking it by shorting at solenoid with screwdriver. Can't remember what we did. If I short it out and crank it now I can hold plug in my hand. No Fire. NEED TO BUILD GARAGE!! Where should I start so it will start??

When taking the cover off the left side of 83' ,I dont know and cant find info on the proper removal instructions, I took off the smaller plate that is heald on with the 2 screws, then there is a bolt that connects to the crank, my question is does that nut need to come off to remove the cover or do I need to just work harder at pulling the cover off, THANX!!!!

Well, I finally installed my edset, and it went ok. But - it seems like I have to crank up the volume way up to get a bit of sound out of them. She who must be obeyed says when I intercom her it comes through nicely for her J&Ks - she has to turn her volume control down and I have to crank mine way up to hear her. Any idea about what gives here?

Folks, I introduce you to the new V-Max, well, at least his exhaust signature... Crank up the volume before clicking the link. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/products/lifestylehome/home.aspx

Just before I parked the bike for the winter I went to start it. It cranked about 1/4 of a rev, there was metal breaking sound and what sounded like a spring or something under tension releasing. Push the starter button now and nothing happens accept the starter trying... dead electrical load. The engine will not spin over. Where do I start looking and testing? My thought was to pull the left side center cover and try to turn the engine crank over with a socket and breaker bar. I'm hoping to eliminate a broken valve I think. If that proves to be good, is there something in the starter gear train I should then dig into. TIA

Ran into a guy today that has an 85 VMax that he said has a rod knocking. I have an 86 crankshaft that is in good shape from a 1300. It is my understanding that the bore is the difference from the 1200 and the 1300. Does anyone know if this crank will work? I might sell him the crank, or try to buy the VMax. RandyA
