Using my carry-along netbook at the moment. I've taken the bold step of upgrading my laptop which got slower and slower the more things I loaded on it. First step was to see if more memory would help as that is relatively easy; so went from 3GB to the max 8GB. Not much performance gain. So, cpu is the next place to try. I did quite a bit of research and think I found the fastest processor that would be compatible that uses exactly the same amount of power, 25watts. Its a 2 core processor with faster speed and more onboard cache and faster memory access. Should be 2.5 times faster than the old single core cpu according to a benchmark site. (AMD V120 to AMD P650). Bought it used on fleabay for $30. I downloaded the maintenance guide from the Compaq/HP web page and off to work I went. Well, its all apart, parts in carefully marked envelopes. It now should be carefully cleaned. Did you know that 2 pounds of dog hair and potato chip crumbs can find their way to the insides of your computer? A couple of screws were missing, and I need some electrical cleaner and heatsink tape before putting it back together. Did I mention that you should never take a laptop apart... Too many small parts in a torture puzzle configuration. So, I need some VR prayers before attempting to get it all back together....

My home desktop PC has a problem. A while back the PC that I mainly use for Quicken/Banking slowed down to a crawl. It is an older Gateway 1.3GHz with only 256meg RAM running WinXP Pro. Long story short I found SVCHOST.EXE is using 99% of the CPU. I have run MalwareBytes, Adaware, SpyBot and scanned it with Symantec and Forticlient antiviruses. Nothing found! I re-ran SP3, which did not help. Ran XP install "repair" then SP3 again. Problem still there. Oh and while FireFox works fine, IE8 will not open except in Safe Mode. I have also tried re-installing IE8. Tried several things Google found, but none of that worked. Any Ideas????? Walter

Sorry about the scare folks. I've had a bit of trouble with the server over the past few days. About 4 times a day, I get an email letting me know that the CPU usage is high. I login and it all looks normal, no problems that I can find. I was working with our host company this morning and they were tweaking the MYSQL settings to try and find the problem. Apparently we tweaked when we should have twacked or some technical term like that. Anyway, things are restored and back to normal for now. Just have to see if I continue to get the high CPU usage error.
