  1. Before I start I want to run this past a few of you guys to see what you think, the first thing I am planing on doing is threading a temp sensor into the oil cooler adapter output side. Next put a DPDT switch in-between it and the water temp gauge with an LEDs to identify which sensor is currently doing the monitoring getting the use out of it for both water temp and oil temp. Next will be mounting the cooler in front of the radiator with a fan and a screen to try to protect everything from road damage. Next with the adapter I am planing on using has a built in thermostat which is set to open when the oil gets above 180 and close when the oil gets below 160 on the flow side that has already gone through the filter. A fan switch set at on at 180 also on the line leading to the cooler. I will be using stainless braid over PTFE lines with 8AN fittings for the oil lines to protect them from damage, lines should be good for a quite a few years. All bends will be handled by AN fittings so kinking the PTFE line won't happen, ok shouldn't.... This is going to be a Fall / Winter project and I would like to get as many kinks worked out before I start. I am due for a coolant and oil change anyways so I figure as long as I doing all that add it now.
  2. On a ride with a Goldwing Bud a few weeks ago I was envious of is Bushtec Cooler Rack attached to this Bushtec hitch. On a weekend trip we had no need for the trailer, but his cooler held some cold drinks and snacks. His wife liked it and my wife "REALLY" liked it. Sleeperhawk has a rack I liked some time back, but that company is out of business. Soooooo I ordered the same Igloo 16Qt. cooler that Bushtec uses and had the frame and cover made. On his Wing it is mounted longways left to right (Wing Lights mounted higher than RSV). I did not want to "WIRE" the rack so I measured and discovered that the cooler mounted N & S versus E & W (could not see the turn signals that way on the RSV) would work. I have a signal dynamics light bar for the brake, and the license plate is visible so here it is. Note: I ordered FuzzyRSTD's Hitch Clamp from our sight to tighten things up. Works GREAT by the way. All in...$120..... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA
  3. With a little bit of searching, I found a cooler thermostat that will work like the Napa THM156. Part THM111 for Napa or Stant part number 14157. This is a 170 degree thermostat. Don't be surprised if Napa, Autozone, Advance, Carquest, etc don't have it in stock. Napa had it in one day for me. If you try another local auto parts and they can't locate the part by the number, the vehicle that this comes from is between 1990 - 1994 Subaru Justy. 4. With the temp gauge on all our first gens riding high in the heat of summer I have to ask if anyone has ever installed an external oil cooler, and if so how did they do it? My bike isn't overheating just running warm like all of them do. Just wondering if this is a possible mod. to help keep things a little cooler. Thanks, Ray.
  5. Joyce & I are heading north in the morning. Destination - Mackinaw City, Mi. I'll be on the slab till I get past Bay City then hit 33 all the way to Lake Huron & on to the Big Mac. Should have 15* cooler temps up there so going to just kick back and enjoy the area. Larry
  6. ok there are coolants that claim to help a motor run 10-25 degrees cooler, do they work? or is it better to use antifreeze/coolant for the summer?
  7. So what do you all think. Will this pass? What do those who pull a trailer do when the cooler rack blocks the plate. I know I could drill holes in back of the cooler rack, and put the plate there.
  8. I have purchased an older model Escapade Classic Trailer and want to make a cooler rack to install on the chrome trailer tongue. California Side Car who makes this trailer, offers one for the trailer, but I would like to use my own cooler and thus have to make my own rack. Their package is made for their cooler. I did purchase the chrome mounting brackets from them for their cooler package as they sold them separately, but have not seen how to use them to make a rack. It is not self-explanatory (LOL).. If you have an Escapade Trailer with the cooler rack, would you take a couple of pictures of the rack so that I will know how to start making my own... Another reason I didn't buy their package, was the color of the cooler cover. It won't match my bike (2000MM RSV Pearl/Sand). Thanks in advance for your time... BTW: You can email them to me if you don't want to post them on this site... (anelson43@aol.com)
  9. Wade and I made it back, muffinman caught up to us in Williamston, pulled in as we were gassing up.Left Vogel at 7:30 am so didn't get to tell everyone that the bear got my cooler about 1:00am guess he wanted a little midnight snack!
  10. I'm looking for a cooler to fit in a 2nd gen saddlebag... you know... doesn't leak, keeps beverages cold. Anyone got something that works well?
  11. We are leaving Idaho tomorrow morning and heading toward the Saw Tooth Mountain. Hope to get back to Houston, Texas in about 4 or 5 days. We are going to take our time. Had a great vacation here enjoying the cooler weather. Was going to leave today but it is our anniversary, so we decided to have a good steak dinner before we left. Hal n Val
  12. http://www.coolwingrider.com/ OK I got my cooling vests in and tried them yesterday,102 degrees F , FANTASTIC but a little pricey,BUT worth it if you want to stay COOL AND DRY!!! I bought the 2 up special which includes 2 Vests and a set of cooling bags or whatever they are called PLUS they come with an additional set(2) that can be put in the cooler bag to change out later in the day. The thing I was afraid of is that the cooling gel packs would not do as they say BUT they do! In 20 minutes the gel packs are frozen in ice water,(It only takes 65 degrees water to refreeze)they say it will do it in a cooler with just ice,I dont know but I suspect it will. Now the cooler doesnt need to be that big, just a 6 pack cooler that fits on a luggage rack is good enough. The gel pacts DO NOT burn your skin even if placed against your skin in a frozen state..I dont know how..The best part of this whole thing is you stay TOTALLY DRY. TOTALLY!!!!! I felt like I was riding at 65-70 degrees for 2 hours then I changed them out, remember they recharge in 20 minutes. Quality is fantastic and IF ever the Gel bags break they are lifetime replacement. These folks have a 90 day return policy no questions ask if you do not like them for ANY reason, you just have to pay the freight back. This is my review,I am in no way affiliated with these folks,I just want to share what I think is the best of the best! Tom
  13. I had a local shop (Pitbull Motorcycle Lifts) make me a cooler rack today. I got it bare, and painted it, then added my own lights. If anyone is interested in one, he is going to draw me up some prices with black paint or powder coat. I will know prices in about a week. You will have to add your own lights.
  14. I'm looking for ideas how to hold down a cooler on my Piggy Trailer. I had a cover made for it and it will have a zipper around the top so I can have access. I don't want to put straps on the outside of the cover or a net.....but that maybe the most logical idea? Will I be taking it off and on the rack....prob not. So people what ideas have ya got ????? Thanks Keith
  15. I have some friends that race cars both circle and drag race and some of them use something called wetter than wet in the radiator to make the cars run cooler and I didnt know if anyone has used it in there bikes? Might make them run cooler in the summer and not be some hot all the time in town.
  16. Any ideas for a cheap cooler rack for my HF trailer? Seen a few posting about als motorcycle accessories. Doesn't appear the website works anymore so maybe he's not doing them anymore.
  17. Here are a couple of pics from last weekend's ROT rally. Going to the Rally had everything loaded up. The two tubs on top contain the a/c unit and cloths. Yes my wife packs light. Also had the cooler full of beverages and ice. Yes it was heavy. Didn't have any problems pulling it, left the bike in 4th and set the cruise at an indicated 65-70. Got between 30-35 mpg's. Coming home I let my FIL carry all of the gear, and the cooler was empty. That was an easy pull. 5th gear and cruise on 75, no problems. Getting 35-40 mpgs. Actually got cold at night with the a/c unit, had to turn it down and borrow a blanket. The air mattress works ok, but not used to such a small bed, and every movement gets transmitted to your partner. May have to look for a memory foam instead, but not looking for more bulk to haul.
  18. The last night of the Vogel IV /Tail of the Dragon event turned out to be quite exciting. The day began with a nice early morning ride with Blackjack to Blairsville to have breakfast with Eck, SleeperHawk and his Mechanic, 1rooster and several other VR members. Afterward we returned to Vogel to hook up with Squidley, Yammer Dan, Broken spoke, Raceman62 and Melinda for a ride over Hog Pen Gap to Suches then North up 60 to Stechoa Gap Rd. to Blairsville then back to Vogel. Then there was the BBQ dinner and the drawing for prizes and the 50/50 drawing. When Lewis called the numbers for the 50/50 drawing. My enthusiasm grew and grew as he called each digit 9-2-1-1-1-------------7, Ah Cr_p my tickets ended with 1-8, 1-9,2-0. Well anyway the money goes to a good cause. I was just sorry that half the money didn't go to my favorite charity------ME. I was however very thankful later that Raceman62 had won the first aid kit which came in handy the next day wrapping up my road rash. Thank you Raceman62 for sharing it with me and the person who donated it as a prize. As I said it came in very handy. (I did However, win the auction for the last set of Squidley running light brackets that I have wanted for a long time:)I'm sure that being the last set they will end up being a collector's item someday. After the drawing I was able to spend some quality time with John and Melinda (Raceman62race) enjoying some good conversation and adult libations. Followed by a solo swim under the stars. I then went home to my tent where I found that my tent site companion Blackjack had packed up and left. At that point there was nothing left to do but lay down for a good night's sleep with the restful music of the blue ridge mountains playing in my ears through the ear spud speakers of mp3 player. All of a sudden (at approximately 2:30 am) there was a loud CRASH right outside of the tent window by my head where Blackjacks tent would have been. I jumped up from my slumbers and unzipped the window flap to see (by the light of the mp3 player display) my pick-a-nik basket (which had been sitting on the pick-a-nik table) had been hurled and scattered right out side of my tent. (see photos attached) At that moment I'm sure I heard a voice saying.. "Heeeeeeeey BOOBOO, screw that Pick-a-nik basket and come help me grab this cooler.... The Ranger is coming". Then there was a smaller voice replying "OK Yogi". When I finally got my tent door flap unzipped I ran out of the tent waving my MP3 player where I thought I saw (By the light of the MP3 player display) one large bear wearing gloves holding on to the pole hook next to the pick-a-nik table with a smaller bear on his shoulders removing my soft shell cooler off the hook where I had placed it earlier making it bear proof.... I thought. Realizing how naked and unarmed I was, in my underwear waving a MP3 player, :whistling:I quickly retreated to my scatterd pick-a-nik basket where I found (by the light of my mp3 player display) a pot, a large metal spoon, and my battery operated camping lantern. (see pics attached) When I got the lantern turned on, I heard two different voices giggling with a tee-he-he-he-hee and saw two bears (one large wearing gloves and one small) running into the woods carrying my blue soft shelled cooler. I used the pot and spoon as a noise maker hoping that it would startle the bears into dropping my cooler and run them off. After putting on my pants and boots, (which made me feel much braver) I was joined by my camp site neighbor who was awakened by all of the commotion. With my new found courage, illumination, weaponry and back-up camper we did a circular search in the immediate area for my cooler while being careful not to penetrate too deeply into the dark shadowed underbrush on the other side of the creek. Not finding my cooler, we returned to our respective camp sites where I managed to find my bike keys to unlock my trunk after remembering that I had been packing heat stored in my trunk (where it did me a lot of good at the time). I packed the heat in my pants pocket and went back to bed keeping my pants and boots on. I carefully placed my pot, spoon, lantern and MP3 player within convenient reach in case of an emergency and went back to sleep.... as much as I could with one eye open and one ear unplugged by the MP3 player ear spud speaker. I didn't want to unplug both ears because I knew by my more alert adrenaline filled brain that if I had to jump up again as long as one ear spud speaker was inserted in my ear the MP3 player would be dangling along side my 3rd shirt button within easy reach, in case of another emergency. Which came about an hour later. Once the crime scene had settled down and I was finally drifting back off to sleep I was again awakened by a commotion outside of the tent window. AGAIN by the light of the MP3 player display I saw the bears rummaging through the contents of the pick-a-nik basket. Grabbing the lantern, pot and spoon, (the heat still packed into my pants pocket) I ran out of the tent. Just in time to hear two different voices giggling with a tee-he-he-he-heee and see two bears ( one large wearing gloves and one small) running off into the woods carrying arm loads of Romaine dried noodles, condiments and my prized package of powdered coco, which I had been saving for a cold rainy day.:rippedhand:AGAIN! The only thing I could think of at the time was to yell at the bears as they ran off "YOU BETTER BRING BACK YAMMER DAN'S RIDING GLOVES OR HE IS GOING TO HUNT YOU DOWN AND BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH HIS CRUTCHES". :soapbox:They didn't seemed impressed or scared because they didn't come back after that to return the gloves. I didn't get much sleep after that. Oh, I might of dozed a little until daylight, but, it's hard to sleep with one eye and ear open, and a loaded gun in your pants pocket. Once it was daylight I followed the debris trail into the underbrush where I found the remains of my cooler and contents where the marauding bears must have dined within eyesight of and within 50 feet of my tent. I must have walked within feet of the dining bears on our circular search of the area earlier that morning. Upon finding and analyzing the evidence :detective:I learned this about the marauding bears. They were evidently very smart bears due to their ability to talk and giggle. They were some what athletic due to their ability to climb on to each others shoulders to remove the cooler from the pole hook and run off into the woods carrying arms loads of stolen goods. They don't care to much for lettuce, tomatoes, whole wheat honey nut bread or pepper because they only gnawed into them but didn't eat them. They do like ham, cheese, Romaine dried noodles, salt, powdered Coco because they ate them up. They did not have a can opener because they left the can of Tuna Fish. (Dolphine safe tuna fish) BOOBOO evidently loves Duke's Mayonnaise because he must have been the one to unscrew the lid of the mayonnaise jar and lick it clean. He even licked the label off the jar. It could not have been Yogi because I don't see how Yogi could have unscrewed the lid wearing gloves. They were not Baptist and liked to party. I know this because they consumed the entire contents of the plastic container I had in the cooler which was filled with pre-mixed Gin and Tonic. They must have been Federally employed secret spy double nought bears because they left one intriguing piece of physical evidence on the pick-a-nik table. A lapel pin with the logo of the Central Intelligence Agency. I swear that all of the above is true and I can prove it by the photo evidence attached. OK I admit I did evoke poetic license and did embellish the story somewhat for entertainment value.
  19. What size cooler do you carry on the tongue of your trailer? Thinking about a 25 qt size. Always camped before, but hoteling it now and no need to carry a large cooler inside the trailer.
  20. and have a few questions for those that have done it. 1. Option one is the Harbor Freight. With prices coming close to $500 has anyone considered the attached trailer from the same company? $429 complete; Pros and cons? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/gifs/clear.gif http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/gifs/clear.gif 2. Option 2 is using an aluminum truck box. I really like the look better but don't know if I can justify the price? Are there benefits other than looks that make it worth it? 3. Are there any sites that help with figuring out axle placement? How far from front or back etc... Also, tounge length and other dimension questions. 4. I see everyone mounting their cooler on the tounge in front of the trailer. Doesn't that add directly to the toungh weight? I believe I read tounge weight should be under 25 pounds. Doesnt a full cooler take up at least half of that? Thanks!
  21. i've seen a few posts here talking about trailer hitch mounted racks. my question is, what kind of weights would you recommend limiting it to, and if anyone has built their own hitch, any caveats? i'm in college right now, and am taking alot of welding classes. I feel pretty confident about being able to fab a rack and trailer hitch up, but obviously, not having done it before, any tips would be hugged and loved and called george. I would like to make it out of aluminium, mostly to hold camping gear (cooler, tent, mostly light stuff) but i haven't priced out and cleared with the soon to be boss ( getting married on the 30th of may ) on what sort of welder is acceptable. I might have to settle for mild steel. thanks in advance, guys!
  22. Im kinda shopping around for a trailer to pull behind the Venture and I noticed that the tongue length on the piggybacker and other factory made trailers are longer than say the harbor freight trailer that you may fashion yourself. Is there an advantage or is it just there for the cooler rack?
  23. For anyone using a cooler on the bike...or trailer, I found something interesting... Its a heavy duty cooler with twice the insulation that a normal discount-store cooler has. Of course it aint cheap...but I ordered one anyway....I plan to use it primarily in my work truck, but also, I might build a rack for it on my bike or trailer. They claim its a lot better at keeping things cold. I'll post a report after it comes in and I've had a chance to use it awhile. They have 25 QT versions with and without handles. I ordered the 25 QT Roadie. http://www.yeticoolers.com/roadie-c-17.html http://www.yeticoolers.com/assets/images/img-roadieseries.jpg
  24. If anyone out there is using "Al's Cooler Rack"...(see link below) http://www.alsmotorcycleaccessories.com/new_cooler_rack.html with their 2nd gen RSV, can you please tell me the specific trailer hitch you're using with it? I am really interested in getting one, but I am unclear on which hitch to get. Thanks for any help. I appreciate it. Rich
  25. Hello Everybody, Does anyone have a cooler rack off a piggyback trailor they are willing to sell? Or now were I can purchase one? Have emailed Tom at piggy back and they do not have any extra. Thanks in advance.
