Tool Envy Syndrome (TES) Tool Envy Syndrome (TES) is a serious condition that afflicts, in varying degrees, nearly all men who are interested in mechanical things. It is very important to recognize and deal with this condition before it becomes serious; left untreated it can lead to a far more serious condition: Inflammation of the Credit Card (ICC). TES is known to strike under the following circumstances: Browsing the latest tool catalogs or sale flyers Visiting stores such as Grizzly or Harbor Freight (Warning: while much less so than in earlier years, the tool department at Sears can still trigger small attacks) Visiting the shop of a friend who has more and/or better tools than you have Surfing the web site of someone with a well-equipped shop Seeing a well-equipped shop in magazines such as Home Shop Machinist Tool Envy Syndrome tends to strike young men particularly hard, due its close relationship to a similar condition: Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS). Over time, in most men, both of these conditions tend to lessen in severity. In fact, it can be shown that gradual accumulation of tools and gear over a period of years can control both conditions while minimizing the risk of Inflammation of the the Credit Card (this is known as the Mature Phase). It has also been widely observed that getting married and having children can moderate the risk; primarily, it is believed, due to counseling from a loving wife and the sobering effect of having lots more bills to pay. Tool Envy Syndrome cannot be controlled by any known drugs (although its effects can be exaggerated by the use of alcohol). Therefore, treatment is currently limited primarily to counseling methods. The first step is admitting that you have a problem. Here are some additional pointers: Avoid situations that are likely to cause an attack When visiting tool stores, leave your credit card at home (Warning: in severely afflicted individuals this can trigger emotional breakdown, fits of crying and other irrational behavior) Meditate on the fine collection of tools that you already have; recognize that time will make it better Find a quiet place. Visualize your ideal shop. Repeat to yourself "It is coming" I hope you have found this information to be helpful. As a TES/GAS sufferer myself (now in the Mature Phase) I felt compelled to pass it on to you.

For several years now I have been looking at used Miata's but unless someone wanted a war pension for them, they were usually pretty ragged out. Today, Linda and I found one locally for a good price and took a look at it and it looked a lot better than I expected. The guy that had it had just gotten it from his mother who has had it for the last five years. It looks totally unmolested. He said the timing belt had been changed about 20,000 miles ago and it had a new alternator and battery. The interior and the top looked to be in very good condition. The two things I am not real crazy about is it is white, but the paint is in very good condition and it is an automatic, which Linda wanted because she says she could never learn how to drive a stick. We took it for a short ride and it seemed to be very solid. The engine was quiet and the trans shifted nice and firm. I did smell the trans fluid before I started it and it smelled good. My hope is to upgrade the wheels and tires as it still has the stock ones and I want to add a trailer hitch so I can pull the Time Out camper behind it. With all the upgrades I am doing to my bike and getting this and being retired, I am really looking for spring. I can not post any pictures yet as I have not picked it up and he has not officially gotten the title yet, as it is in the mail where he transferred it over from his mother. I know I will never find another website like this one, but if any of you have any good suggestions, let me know. RandyA

I know this isn't the perfect forum for this, but it will work. I have a garage FULL of 1st gen parts, and I need to thin it out drastically. I will be posting pics in the classifieds, but wanted to give a heads up to the 1st gen folks. Here are a few of the body parts I have... Left side upper fairing, fair condition Couple of front fenders, fair to good condition 2 sets of MKI saddlebags, 1 with key for locks, 1 without key, Good shape Trunk for '85 and base, Fair condition 3 seats, 2 in fair shape, 1 in not so good 2 faux tank covers 1 pair of engine side panels, fair to good condition 5 factory stereos all work, including the cassette players, fair to good condition 1 CLASS pump compressor assembly, works well I could go on, but you get the drift. If anyone is looking for oddball parts, I have a got of inner plastic parts, fenderwells and such. If your looking for something shoot me a PM, or if you want to buy the lot of misc parts, we can do that too.

Need some advice I have an opportunity to buy a ’70 BSA Rocket 3 750 triple for $5K. Been in dry storage covered for 30+ years. One owner. Has racing wheels and tires w/ original tires and wheels in boxes that go w/ it. Copper color, looking at it today to determine condition and will post pics. If it is in good condition would it be worth 5K? I know nothing about BSA.

Trying to catch up to Yammer Dan....but none of them are blue! Going to drive 6 hours each way to pick up these 2 bikes. Getting both of them for $1500. 1984 Yamaha Venture Royale in good condition needs 2nd gear replaced but can still be driven or for parts. 1985 Yamaha Venture in good condition has a 1300cc motor from a 1989 venture so no 2nd gear issues, runs and rides excellent. Also have another running 1200cc motor

So I swapped a (mostly) 1300cc engine into my bike and now I am left with a 1200 engine that I have no room for. I want to get rid of it, but keep any parts that I might need as spares. The donor motor had no covers, so mine went back on. Same with clutch basket. The motor has been pulled apart and will be heading to scrap soon. This is what I am saving so far: -Starter clutch (good condition, no cracks) -Valve covers -Misc bolts/nuts/washers -Valve shims If anyone has a suggestion as to what else I should keep from it, otherwise I will be tossing/recycling the rest of it: -Engine cases (upper & lower, 1200cc) appear to be in good condition -Heads (from 1300) - they are in rough condition, rusty & stuck valves (don't appear to be bent tho) -Rotating assembly (pistons, crank, counterbalance, transmission, output shaft) ---Main bearing journals have some scratches in them ---2nd gear issue on transmission parts -Camshafts & chains I am basically in the mindset of "I've been in there once, I'm not going back in", so I don't forsee the need of keeping the engine or any internal parts. Plus I'm not really an ebay seller type of guy so not saving parts to sell. -Andrew p.s. If anyone wants the remains for free...

New here. I do rebuild a 1977 Yamaha XS750 a few years ago but had to sell it. I am now looking at a 85 venture at a dealership new here. He is asking $2450 but told him I would offer him less and he seemed open to the idea. This would be my first larger bike. My question is, what should I be aware of as far as issues with these bikes. I have seen stuff on the 2nd gear and it scares me a bit. Not enough to get away from the bike yet but..... The bike looks to be in nice condition and the old owner left his contact info so that he could be contacted regarding the bike but I am just trying to do some homework. Going back to look at in this week and hope to have some better ideas. I think I am going to start off around $1600. KBB list the resale at $1995 in excellent condition and although it is in good condition it is not excellent. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Starter not dis-engaging
unwind80 posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey guys, I think the starter is not dis-engaging after a start on my '83 Venture Royale. I have been tuning and balancing and have not yet had her on the road. While shutting it down just now I could hear the starter wind down, the engine had been running for about 5 minutes. Upon trying to start it again the starter is sluggish on a fully charged battery. Am I looking at replacing the starter? Or is there a repair that can be made? I should say that I am just trying to get this thing in good enough condition to ride to the shop where I plan to have them do the rest of the work. I am fighting the clock for a ride next month, and I am in a little over my head with this. Thanks for any insight.- 5 replies

is it possible to test TCI or the coils off the bike? If so...how? I've got my blonde torn apart (VERY apart!) which is VERY scary! Anybody in Ontario got an 83 that they would be willing to try my TCI on? How do you open it to see the condition of the diodes etc....cut it? you are gonna see a lot of that emoticon in the near future!

A couple of items for the '86 I just picked up. The chrome side covers that sit beside the radiator cover (the triangle ones) and the lower center chrome piece that sits between the bottom of the saddle bags. If any of you 1st genners have these in decent condition let me kn ow as I would rather give my money to one of our own rather than a faceless ebay seller (although I'm sure they are nice folks too)

A set of stock seats for a 97 RSTC. I am sending mine to my cousin in Missouri to be recovered and have gel pads inserted into them. I would like to not be out of riding for 2 weeks if at all possible. I really don't care the condition. Don't know if anyone would be willing but it is worth asking. I am in NE Ga and am sending my seats out around next monday. Thanks for looking.

Last November I picked up a 1984 Goldwing luggage rack for my VR. It had the right mounting locations and dimensions for my large top box, and it looked to be in pretty good condition. Today I finally got around to installing it and I have attached a pdf file with pictures. Please look it over and comment Thanks! GaryZ

I have found new prices for most of the items but I do not really know how much to mark them down. Can anyone give me a general rule of thumb to use. All of he stuff is in great condition and 3 years old and up.

I ran across this add. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/1932148949.html It look like a good price for the condition it looks like it in $5300. I was going to go look at it. But the bike is not in Indy it in Montana. Here is the email the seller sent me. I stopped in at Iowa City Motorsports to buy gloves, glasses etc and sitting out front was this 1985 in really good condition with low miles. I wouldn't promote a dealers bikes but these older bikes seem to be getting scarcer all the time. Here's their web page if you want to take a look. Sales guy showed me a blond 83 in back that has even fewer miles and in even better condition but they haven't put up on the site yet. http://www.iowacitymotorsports.com/pre_owned_detail.asp?sid=02512628X9K8K2010J9I33I44JPMQ841R0&veh=1799554 Iowa Guy

I know that I do not post a lot, but all of your advise got me into a 2006 RSTD and I love it. This is not motorcycle related, but this was a bad accident that involved one of the associates that I worked with. This kid had a lot going for him, and it is a shame to see this happen. This kid had a great heart for work, and please pray for his family. His wife, 11 month old and himself were killed. Please pray for his sister as she is still in critical condition. I have been thinking about buying a Venture or Wing and selling my 2005 RSTD. I thought I would throw this out there in case someone with a Venture might have thought he might rather have a Tour Deluxe. I would like to find one at least as new as mine in excellent condition. I would expect to pay the difference in value of course.
