This is the lyrics to a Kenny Chesney song and it describes how I feel today & most days .... We never know when our lives will change with a phone call that no one ever wants to get .....In rememberance of my son Garrett Heath Harden 8/4/89- 12/11/98 tho it has been 16 yrs I still wear the pain like a heavy coat...The only thing that gives me hope,is I know I'll see him again some day. "Who You'd Be Today" Sunny days seem to hurt the most. I wear the pain like a heavy coat. I feel you everywhere I go. I see your smile, I see your face, I hear you laughin' in the rain. I still can't believe you're gone. It ain't fair: you died too young, Like the story that had just begun, But death tore the pages all away. God knows how I miss you, All the hell that I've been through, Just knowin' no-one could take your place. An' sometimes I wonder, Who'd you be today?

It's been a slow project, but it's now ramping up for a conclusion. I started breaking down my 87 VR last Fall in preparation for the winter project of going through the bike again and fixing the mechanicals as needed, repainting and reassembling. My good friend Richard generously offered to let me ride his 2007 Midnight Venture while mine was down for the rehab. Since he has been in no hurry for me to return it I probably took more time than I should have in progressing this project. But, now its time to get the ball rolling so with 4 days off work I'm ramping up for the completion. Last fall after I had dissassembled the bike Randy R came down came down and spent a couple of days helping me (more like showing me ) how to do the valve shim adjustment procedure. My son Clint has been helping by sanding and prepping body parts for paint. Now, after getting all of the paint materials together:mo money:, today we are about to start the painting process. I have cleaned and repainted the the engine block while the bike is mostly dissembled and will be redoing the carbs and fixing some minor mechanical problems during the reassembly. I call this project revision five since this is the 5th paint job that the bike has had since factory original. I have learned a lot on each revision and am hoping this one will come out right and be the final one. The last one (as many of you may recall) was a royal blue metal flake with gold metal flake flames. While better than the previous revision I was not completely satisfied with the out come. It reminded me and some had commented that it looked like the paint job on a bass boat. :doh:So, on this revision I have selected an electric blue (Kia Rally Blue Metallic) base color with silver pinstripping, then Clear coat until it pops. (lossing the flames) I am however preserving the Dragon Slayer coat of arms logo on the front fender. I have attached some pics as the project is now befor primer coat of paint. By the way when this project is complete I bought enough paint to paint the van to match the bike.

Hello Everyone: My wife and I got away for the long weekend. Left our home in Western NE. rode to Saratoga Wyoming then on to Craig CO, Steamboat Springs, Walden, Fort Collins, Cheyenne WY and home. Approx 800 miles. Witnessed a seasoned motorcyclist drift too close to the edge of the blacktop on a curve in downtown Craig CO. His tires rolled into the 4" deep gutter at about 30 MPH. Nasty spill. All over in 15 seconds. Thanks to a full face helmet, leather coat and full finger gloves he walked away with only bruised knuckles. It could happen to anyone of us at anytime.

Well I have been fooling with this for a while but I just got the mount back from powder coat. Thanks Gary! Assembled it all together, pre-wired the bike so I should be good to go on Saturday and mount and see if the little bugger works or not. Mount made by Renne it was a great job and a hell of a design as far as I am concerned. Paint by Gary and fooling around by me. I think it is exactly what I wanted to so fooling around is just part of the deal for me! YA I KNOW!!!! Where the heck are the pictures? RIGHT HERE!!!!!!!! Befor paint and after powder coat

So not long after first getting the venture, I managed to let it roll forward of the kick stand while parked, and it scratched up the front left part of the fairing. I decided I would try paint from colorrite.com and see what I could come up with. Started out by sanding the area down to the plastic. Then a couple coats of primer. We wet sanded with 800 grit paper between each coat. Next the base coat on the affected area. Then we scuffed the rest of the the red on the fairing and one last wet sanding with 1000 grit paper. Last thing was 3 coats of clear. We wet sanded between each coat with the 1000 grit. All in all, I'm very pleased with the results. The color is as close as anything you can get. I can not tell any difference. The metal flake is the same size and density. After a few more hours of rubbing compound use, the mirror like finish will look even better than it does now. Bottom line is... Don't be afraid of using the rattle cans as long as you are willing to spend the time on prep and finish.

Help...I made a boo boo :!: I tried using one of those bug sponges (the ones with the scotch brite-like stuff on one side) to remove the bug guts and tar from my lower fairings. I had the lowers off and submersed in a pail of soapy water and I was scrubbing them with the bug sponge. When I pulled them out they looked great...no bug guts or tar...OR CLEAR COAT :!: :!: :!: . When I dried them off I could see a lot of dull scuffs and scratches. How do I repair this :?: I am not too familiar with automotive paints and finishes. (No kidding eh)

Hi All haven't posted in awhile and haven't even been on the bike this year for a number of reasons but yesterday was a real disappointment! I was all ready to go to Anacortes Washington for the Oyster Run which is one of my favorite bike days of the year, especially on a nice day! The day broke with a beautiful sunrise and I stopped for a coffee before hitting the US border. When I came out I noticed a wet spot under the bike and thought dam, I must not have tightened the oil plug after I changed the oil on Saturday. Nope, when I bent down and for a closer inspection it turned out to be straight gasoline!!!! It was dripping out of my tank straight down onto the heads and spark plug then running down the back of the engine and transmission! When I moved the chrome trim the gas literally poured out from a small hole like a stream! The clear coat must have been holding it to a dribble and when I wiped the bubbling clear coat and move the chrome trim this is what happened, which put a quick end to the day! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/pocored/IMG_7697.jpg Here is a shot from this morning after emtying the tank and getting it ready to go to the dealer tomorrow as warranty expires next week! The tank is upside down and the tab on top is the rail or seam that runs down the bottom edge of the tank when it is in the right position. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/pocored/IMG_7810.jpg The picture clearly shows five or six pin holes that have been fixed and then you can see the paint and clear coat over them right in the bottom fold area at the rear of the tank. It looks like a factory repair was not done properly! Has this been an issue or am I just the lucky one?

Well, we were gonna wait til spring, but last wed we went into knoxville. While we were in town we stopped at the Honda shop just for giggles. Next thing ya know, we're doing paperwork for an '08 wing. We pick it uo on the 17th. Pics to come shortly after that. As for the moneypit, I'm not going to part it out. I'm going to give it a coat of paint, and give it to my 25 year old son, who is a corrections officer in south georgia, so there will probably be another member on here fairly soon. Ya'll will get pics wed or thursday:mo money:

So, I have painted 3 coats of black over the factory red paint, lightly sanding between coats and am now ready to spray a clear coat on. Do I lightly sand again between the clear coat layers? Iowa Guy (first time painter)

Well i got the paint almost finished up and it was lookin fair. Got down to clear coeting (second coat) the last part and i knocked off my front fender into the grass, (no paint booth) turned around to see what happened and knocked off the headlight ring and the false tank cover..............I'll stop right there. the rest of the story is'nt good for mixed company. I'll have to fix the clear coat later, now i have a new problem...... Got all the parts back on and it looks better even though it is ****** up. So i started checkin to see why it wasnt idling right and i found that the #2 cylinder carb boot is busted. now i gotta have one. Anybody have a spare? It is the left front cylinder. looks like oil has dripped out of the filter housing and onto the rubber boot. i'm pretty sure this is what caused it th bust open.,, !!!

Hey all from the Vancouver / lower mainland area of BC... I'm looking for someone who has the facilites and/or equipment and/or experience to paint my 87 VR. I have a garage but don't have the appropriate compressor or spray gun. I also have the experience, having had a body shop many years ago. I want to paint my ride using 2-stage paint (base coat / clear coat). Is there anyone in my area that has his/her own equipment and/or facility who would be interested in either doing this job for me or allowing me to use/rent their equipment. I have all the plastic pieces off the bike and prepped. Just need to get them painted. The weather is gonna turn warm and sunny soon and I'm gettin itchy to ride.
