  1. new to me 1983 Yamaha venture. Well I put in a new fuse block and all was well until......I found a black wire hanging down by the lower part of engine. Dummy me I just ASSUMED it was a ground then I blew a fuse....ugh well after I finally figured out it was a spliced in power wire for some marker lights I hooked it up the right way. So then I noticed the computer display thing is not working at all, I mean nothing, so what the crap did I do now. I have power to all fuse sides and what not. I unplugged the display and it had some power going to some of the wires with the key on (not sure which ones I shall check). anybody have a clue what I did? Did I fry it somehow. O I don't think headlight is working either but not sure on that part I didn't try to start it just nothing by turning key on only. Ok well that's enough wind for now.
  2. Stopped at the grocery store after work with everything working normal. Came out, fired up the VR and no headlight and dashlights no CMS backlight. Engine started OK, turn signals, tail light and brake light were working OK too. Checked the fuse box found no blown fuses or weak or corroded holders. Wiggled and pulled the start button. Also checked the headlight bulb which was good. Are the headlight and dash lights connected in some manner or did I win the lottery and get two problems at once? I'm at a loss. Any ideas? I need to ride this thing to work tomorrow morning.
  3. Whats the cost? As in the plasticy thingy that senses what gear your in. I was wondering if that was starting to kick the bucket, as the bike after a long ride (60 miles actually) the neutral light will flicker like bonkers, then go out, and the cms gear # goes away. Gear # also goes away in 2nd gear at times before all this, and now 1st. I'm guessing its time to replace it, yea?
  4. Hi all! Just bought myself an 85 Venture xvz12! I'm now in the process of fixing some of the issues it has. The biggest one is the CMS doesn't seem to work! The rest of the gauges seem to be ok except the RPM gauge is intermittent. Nothing at all shows on the lcd. I've tried replacing the 15A fuse but same issue. I have read about the CMS needing to be resoldered but all the posts I've read have some function! Mine has none!! Suggestions?
  5. I believe my CMS (computer monitoring system?) is damaged. Has anyone attempted a repair of the board or logic chips? I have an '89 VR and have had it for 3 years. It had a sealed battery when I got it and I know about the "resistor Mod" for the "Battery Level Warning". When I read about the Mod--I looked at my bike and saw that the probe was removed and wired into the fuse box. Mod done--right? I have recently addressed the issue of a weak charging system and shortly after solving that issue--my Battery Warning came on. I looked closer at the probe Mod and realized there was no resistor installed! I immediately installed one--then another---then a 100K "pot" in an attempt to satisfy the CMS. With the pot--I was able to try voltages as low as 2.2V with no success. I traced the rest of the circuit to the connector at the board, but all was good. I took the CMS apart looking for any obvious damage (blown caps--etc.), but all looks perfect. Despite this, I believe something within the CMS must have been damaged. I decided to unplug the red "LED" until I can fix it properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated--Shawn
  6. Ok,here is my CMS mod. Due to failed tail light I tracked problem to the CMS and decided to complete the mod I had been planning to do... I kept all high, low, tail, brake current running thru the CMS per stock(had considered bypassing wiring external CMS but trying to not modify stock wiring),but wanted to keep the fail indicators working, but change to LED lighting that would cause fail indicators to turn on. So instead of the fail indicators being activated by the reed switches-I extended the reed switch wiring external the CMS for external input 1st pic the corrosion causing my tail light problem First removed all 4 coils and reed switches second drilled oversize holes for 14ga solid copper wire where the coils were third installed 24ga solid telco wire in place of the reed switches then I mounted canabilized RJ11 phone jack to rear cover of CMS, and connected telco wire to RJ11 with screws mounted on rear side of CMS cover 2nd pic schematic of CMS input circuits for these 4 items and modification next 4 pics removed coils and drilled holes next 2 pics RJ11 jack install last pic I sealed board with finger nail polish to prevent future corrosion Simple phone extension cord plugged into RJ11 brings wiring where needed for future direct light monitoring, and allows easy disconnect for future dash removal Now I need to apply a frame ground to keep the warning lights off- easy to build future circuit to open frame ground during a failure of direct light monitoring circuit of hi,low, tail, brake. I also replaced all dash indicators with LEDs from superbrightleds.com found I had to reinstall 1 158 back into reserve light warning, due to small current always on lights up LED full. I put in blue back lights, and white warning lights. Only problem is Green neutral looks blue. Would suggest green LED here. All tested and works as advertised.
  7. Howdy all! I was just going out to start the bike. I turned the key on, and the CMS BIT check went through its normal process. After all checks cleared, I hit the start button everything went off and no start! I checked the fuses on both fuse panels and they're alright. The main fuse is good too. I also checked the other little fuse on the negative side of the battery. The radio works fine, but that seems to be the only thing that works (when ignition switch is on accessory). I have no headlights, turn/hazard lights, tail light or start. The battery is good, I just put it on the battery tender and it already had a full charge. My thoughts are it could be a relay (which one, I don't know) or a CMS. Any ideas?? Thanks.
  8. I found a great 92 Venture today and decided it needed a new home. The problem with it is the computer monitor system (CMS) does not work No fuel indication ETC.. Can anyone tell me where the CMS Control unit is located and maybe a part number. I know it's is behind the dash, but there is 4 black boxes behind the dash. If you have a CMS control unit shot me a price. I'm also looking for a stock seat. This one has a Corbin on it and it sets me up to high. You can e-mail me at pandlbiker@olp.net. Thanks Phill
  9. I stand before you today, a broken man. I removed the trim, headlight lens, windshield, dash cover, Removed the CMS, soldered it, put it all back together and that pesky headlight STILL doesn't work. I will say that Icons and information on the CMS work now that never worked before. But NO HEADLIGHT! I am now officially asking any Electrical Guru if they would be willing to take a shot at this problem. I am willing to travel and I hope there is someone close enough that I can make the ride one way in 24 hours. If I thought GEORGE S would adopt me, I would be headed to his house as we speak. I am laid off right now and have some time so I would like to get this fixed. I might add that I do have some wiring issues and this could be the problem but as I stated in the Tag Line I am "Electrically Retarded" and need some help. Anybody Want Some Company? Earl
  10. Hi, Ok so I have my new red '84 Std Venture's dash apart, as some light bulbs needed changing. Surprisingly ALL the dash illumination lamps were blown. This seems odd but OK, lets see what happens with new ones. My limited experience with this bike has shown me that there is some erratic behaviour with the CMS indications, brake / oil indicators coming on spuriously & intermittently etc. I recall reading here about bad solder joints on the CMS commonly causing such things, so I brought the CMS to work with me this morning where I have a good BIG magnifying work light, appropriate solder and a proper size iron for the job. (and a bit of free time thankfully. ) Now, I have done electronic QC work in the past so I know what bad solder joints look like and how to reflow the solder etc. Under close inspection, I didn't see any obviously suspect joints on the lower CMS board. I went ahead anyways, and gingerly reheated & resoldered all the joints on the bottom pc board, concentrating on the ones associated with the wiring connectors. (I can't recall when I worked on a board that bubbled so much when heated though!) All look good and shinny and solid now. While I have this unit on the bench, is there any thing else I have over looked that good practice calls for to make it happy and reliable again? BTW, although I get CMS indications for oil and brake occasionally, I have yet to see the red flashing warning indicator work. Any clues here ? All thoughts and suggestions welcome. Thanks, Brian H. 11. Hoping to verify a diagnosis. Recent acquisition of an 83, required a wiring harness replacement. Bike came alive and after a few gremlins is running. For some reason, the running lights are out. Bulbs are good, and finagling a probe into the connector on the CMS shows 12 volts on the blue wire from the fuse block, but only 0.8 volts or so out on the blue/white wire for the running lights. Current thinking: bad solder joint in CMS, or bad CMS. Any other thoughts? Three of the four carb covers have silicone dabbed on the middle of them. Taking one off it looks like something ground through the cover, leaving a hole that the silicone is now sealing. Can anyone think of a good reason to do this, or how that could happen without a major crash? Kinda baffling. Thanks all! Paul
