  1. Just wanted to get some opinions, feedback and/or comments here on this idea/project. I'm putting together a 4.8" TFT Touchscreen instrument cluster for my 1983 Venture Royale Deluxe ... I want to replace the current dash/cluster with the touchscreen display that will show the following: Battery Voltage Fuel Guage with MPG reading Speed / RPMs Odometer / Tripometer Compass / GPS Turn Signals / hazards (when on) Outdoor and Engine Temp Clock with alarm Neutral Indicator (maybe indicator to show which gear as well) Side Stand / Kill Switch Indicator Burned out headlight and HI / LO tail, brake light failure indicator High beam indicator. Possibly Oil level indicator. (any additions or changes please comment and let me know) I'm also thinking that there could be a few user selectable display variations (themes). I have the electronics / programming know how to do this and I am planning on doing this for myself either way, but was wondering if others would be interested in this as well? Thanks, Jason
  2. Vibration reduction of Instrument Cluster on 83-85 Venture. I have experienced a lot of vibration / bouncing of my instrument cluster on my 83 Venture when riding on rough roads. I recently had the cluster off of the bike and found that the two brackets that mount the cluster to the fairing sub frame had excessive play in them. There is a rubber grommet over a shoulder stud at two points on each bracket for vibration dampening. I placed a new 3/8” washer between the existing washer and bracket to reduce the free play in the brackets. The 3/8” washer will fit over the shoulder of the stud allowing the bracket to slightly compress the grommet some more. The existing washer is replaced back over new washer and will only allow the nut to be tightened until contact with the shoulder of the stud. When the washer is placed correctly and the bracket is bolted back on the cluster, the threads of the stud will be about even with the back of the 10 mm nut when tightened. With this modification in place, the vibration of the cluster has been significantly reduced. There is still some flexing of the cluster that will absorb road vibration, but not nearly as much as before. The 4 conductor connector in the1st picture is for my shift position lights. The mounting bracket for the cluster is removed in this picture. The mounting studs for it are to the top left and bottom right of the electrical connector. The second picture shows where I placed washers. Gary
  3. Hope this is the right forum. I sold my 84 to a good friend and he has been unable to fix the speedo. Does anyone have a working speedometer? Or an entire cluster? It appears the drive broke where the cable goes in. Which approach should he take? It seems to me changing the entire cluster would be easiest. Thanks in advance.
  4. I have a 91 venture royale 1300. The computerized monitor, fuel gauge, and clock along with the computer leveling air suspension system is blank and does not work. I am wondering if this is a computer problem? I have traced the wires on the leveling system and they seem to be ok. The only thing that is displayed on that is the PSI sign itself. Nothing else will show. The actual pressure of the front and rear will not display. I can not set the pressure or check the pressure with the automatic adjust on the monitor. It is separate from the cluster on the dash and that is why I am wondering if it is a computer problem? I did buy a instrument cluster on ebay, just in case mine was bad. I did not really think it was, but I got the cluster for 26 bucks and was told everything worked on it. I figured it was a good investment as I have seen them go for 100-800 bucks on ebay. As cheap as I got it for I figured it was worth it as it might come in handy some time. I am leaning towards it being a computer problem tho. Everything to do with a computer read on this bike does not work. Fuel gauge, clock, suspension psi etc. I have not gotten the cluster out yet to trace wires, but have on the leveling system. Everything else works on this bike. All electrical, gauges, lights etc. Anyone have any input on what I need to look for on trouble shooting the computer? Thanks in advance for any input. I intend on tracing the wires on the dash and repairing and fixing any wire or connections as I do, but I am thinking this is a computer problem as it effects other things related to the computer that is not in the cluster. I have this half way tore down tracing wires and it has been a nightmare so far....
  5. Like i said in my previous post, gauge overlays came in. today, while some BORING football was on ( Michigan doesnt play till 330), i decided to give it a whirl. heres what i did.... i removed the cluster. took out message center, to check for solder breaks. unscrewed the 6 screws holding the black faceplate on to expose gauges. cleaned gauges with dustfree cloth. removed overlays and spread out on clean work surface. carefully removed tach overlay and sprayed with enclosed solution (soapy water). punched out tiny hole where needle stop is with a paperclip. carefully slid overlay over gauge face and aligned using a maglite. used enclosed squeegee to remove bubbles. voila!! did this on temp, volt, and speedo. speedo didnt quite line up right for my 83vr. off by 5mph. dont care, these look sweet!!! its really made for 86-94, skydoc sent them a cluster. thanks earl! reassembled cluster. these were custom made for our forum!! please show your support and get a great custom look! price is 19.99 for white. a dozen other colors are available. check out their site at www.whitegauges.net. it was sooooo easy that im getting a set for my car too! i also ordered some carbon fiber sheet to upgrade the look of the instrument pod itself. writeup to follow soon. GO BLUE! took less than an hour!
  6. i found this really cool sight that makes overlays for instrument clusters. www.whitegauges.net. . i sent them a pic of my 83 cluster and they said they could make a kit for it! wouldnt that be cool!! they have all different kind of colors too! maybe we can get a group buy?? tell me what you think. i would need to send them a spare cluster for developement. anyone willing to do so? how bout you gen2 guys? want in?http://www.whitegauges.net/product_images/color_changes/yellow_small.jpghttp://www.whitegauges.net/product_images/color_changes/brightblue_small.jpg
  7. Has anyone tried the Custom Dynamics cluster in rear signal housing? Has turn/brake/running light in one cluster so your turn signal acts as running light/brake/turn signal. http://www.customdynamics.com/motorc...c_clusters.htm
  8. so I am illiterate when it comes to loading pics so I will try to explain my question. Tore down the bike for 2nd gear and am putting her back together but I have come to a problem that I nees assisstance with, The cables that open and close the flaps in the carbs were replaced by me but I am unsure which cable goes in which hole on the carb cluster? The two short cables that come out of the plastic box (Where the cruise cable goes into) and then go to the top of the carb cluster into two holes that hold the cable which one goes where? I have a great pic of the question but its stuck in my email.. Any help would be appreciated. Mike:225:
  9. I had a strange occurrence today that I thought was going to leave me stranded. I came up on a mobile construction stop light that I knew was very long so I turned off the bike to keep the heat down. It was close to 90 degrees out. I had just done this on the other direction and had made a ccouple other stops with no problems. When I thought the light was about to change I hit the starter and everything went out. I lost the instrument cluster and the starter wouldn't engage. The odd thing is that the power outlets that are wired direct to battery also went out. I pulled off to the side and tried wiggling wires etc. I also pulled the line fuze for the outlets. After several attempts and 10 minutes it came back to life and has been fine since. I'm afraid of this happening again. Any thoughts?
  10. How in the world does the part of the dash come apart where the speedo is. have searched here, googled it, looked in repair manual. I have the front part of farring apart. I can see the backside of cluster, but cannot get to it. I am specifically wanting to access the clear lense you see the speedo through.
  11. I got an 86 xvz1300 parts bike. I use some parts off it. Now looking at it as a street rat project. What electrical systems can I eliminate ie. class, audio, instrument cluster, ect. and still make it run? I'd like a bare bones basic system including charging/starting, ignition and lights. Will the engine run without the computer stuff in the gauge cluster? Would like the anti-dive to work. Someone must have tried this before any help would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Howdy. I have an 83 venture standard bought in about 01'. My original speedometer quit working last winter cable snapped, popped the speedo needle off and with a new cable it doesn't work at all. Found another cluster on ebay and bought it with the understanding that the speedometer works. Put it on, and speedometer stays on Zero but the odometer works and seems to be counting the miles pretty accurately. I removed the cluster and opened the cover and the speedo needle seems to be free, not stuck, and always returns to zero if moved a little. How could the odometer & tripmeter be working when the speedometer isn't ? I bought it fairly cheaply so it's not worth shipping back. Thanks in advance. DesertRider
  13. After reading the discussion in other threads about how to make yourself visible I got to thinking about passing lamps. Some of the LED cluster boards that you replace your turn signal and brake light with are very bright and I've noticed the new Audi's have LED daytime running lights that are very visible. So, I started wondering if a LED cluster board retrofitted into a passing lamp would be brighter than existing bulbs? I know they wouldn't be good for lighting the path but they may be more visible. Does anyone make such a thing? Would it be brighter? Dennis
  14. I am being told that either the gauge cluster is bad or the brain that controls it. I have to wonder which part "they" mean by "brain". I am assuming the block box under the fairing headlight assembly. Can anyone elaborate on this? The lights turn on, signals work, but no gas gauge, tach, speedo etc... thanks for any and all help.
  15. Can someone please tell me where to find instructions on removing the instrument cluster on an 83 venture? My speedo cable came undone and I don't want to break something pulling the cluster to screw it back in. Thanks!
  16. Sorry how is this> Here are the instructions and pictures I took of this. I have a 83 Venture standard and was having the false warnings, dim headlight, and my fuel gauge would go to empty right after filling then back full again. This caused the fuel warning to come on, then go off. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms1.jpg First remove the windshield trim. (4 screws). http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms2.jpg Remove the windshield. (4 screws). http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms3.jpg There are four screws holding the hood in place. I loosened the front ones. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms4.jpg Then I removed the rear ones. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms5.jpg Then removed the hood. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms6.jpg Then using a 10mm wrench and a socket, I removed the 4 nuts and washers holding the instrument cluster. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms7.jpg I then unhooked the large connector and 3 smaller wires that connect to the instrument cluster. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms8.jpg I then disconnected the speedometer cable. I did this last as I could pull up a little on the cluster and get more room to unscrew the cable. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms9.jpg I then removed the cluster from the bike. Here is the removed cluster with all the tools I used to remove it. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms10.jpg Now to remove the CMS from the instrument cluster. I first removed the 4 ourter screws, then the four inner screws. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms11.jpg Then you remove the mounting plate. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms12.jpg I had to work mine out of there one side at a time. Part of the problem was the wires that connect the two pieces together, and a piece of clear plastic which is to light up the LCD at night. Here is the rear view of the removed unit. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms13.jpg And the front view. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms14.jpg All you need to do to split this is, remove 4 screws on the back and disconnect the wire between the two units. I used a pencil type soldering iron heated very hot. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms15.jpg I soldered both rows where the connector is soldered to the board. The iron is pointing at one row. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms16.jpg And here it is pointing at the other row. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms17.jpg Once completed, just reverse the sequence to put it all back together. Some of the mounting bolts are buried and hard to get to, but if a little patience is used, you can get to them. There are three connectors that I didn't show, and I found those hard to put back together, but again a little patience and they should be fine. Now that I had it all back together, I had to try it out to make sure I had not created a error or problem. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/attachments/cms18.jpg It took me about 30 minutes to take the instrument cluster out fo the bike. Removing the CMS from the cluster and soldering took about an hour for me. Putting the cluster back together took about 15 minutes, and returning the cluster to the bike and finishing up took about another 20 minutes. Remember I was taking pictures and taking great care.
  17. :no-no-no::no-no-no: I tore apart my 99 Venture to paint it. While cleaning it yesterday I realized I had not disconnected the battery before disconecting all of the electrical conectors and the spedometer cluster. How badly did I screw up? I have not gotten the parts back to install on the bike and do not want to connect the cluster until I reassemble the bike. Has anyone ever done this and not had to spend the big bucks to fix it?......Please say it'll be ok, i'm just sick!!! Thanks for any input guys. Big Mike.......Who's wallet may be shrinking BIG TIME!!!
  18. I put a new sealed battery in my 84 Venture Royale now the battery light on the instrument cluster will not go out how do I disable it. TOM
  19. I've removed the instrument cluster and can't get the face off until I remove the Illumination control. Anyone know how to remove the control ? Does it just pull off or what ???? Jim O'D..
