Hi! Just bought a 1990. Upgrading from a GL1200. WHat a night and day difference! If the Goldwing is a Cadillac then the Venture is a spaceship! I will post a pic when I figure out how. I am looking for some parts though- the little stash pouches on the trunk? I have on of them the other is missing bracket and all! I can find pouches on Feebay- but no brackets! Does anyone here sell stuff? I havent found how the classifieds work yet...

Some of you have had problems for a long time with uploading your photos to the classifieds. If your pictures were too large, the ad would simply fail to post and give no indication as to WHY it didn't work. I have been working on that issue tonight and I think it will be much better now. First of all, if a picture is too large then it should automatically re-size them to fit. If your picture is HUGE...meaning 2 MB or something like that, it may still fail but should at least give you an error message now letting you know WHY it failed. I hope that this will make it easier for all who have had a problem. It is still best to re-size your pictures to no larger than 640 x 480 and no more than 200,000 bytes before you upload them.

Time to seek your input again. As most of you have noticed by now, I have created a classifieds area within the forum. One of the reasons for this is that our supporting members such as Sky_Doc, Rick Butler, Carbon_One, etc. were constantly having problems with their ads expiring in the old system. There is no way to make ads there permanent so those vendors who have multiple items for sale over a long period were always having to re-create their ads once they went away. I worked on that problem for some time but just didn't get it to work correctly. So, I decided to test the classifieds in the forum. The downside to having them in the forum is that they are now set to expire in 60 days except for our member vendors. In all other areas, the ads expire in 60 days and you do not have an option to renew them and you will not receive a notification that your ad is about to expire. There is also no way to do auctions for St. Judes or otherwise. So, my question is, which do you prefer? Do you like the old classifieds better or the new forum based ones? If you like the forum based ads then I have to assume that you are OK with the limitations regarding no renewals and etc. At this time, I have turned off the old ads so that no new ones can be placed but I can easily just turn it back on. As for the member vendors, one option would be to let them keep their forum areas but have all other ads placed in the old system. I don't want two complete systems however. I don't think....heck...that is another option though and it's really up to you. As always, your feedback will be appreciated.

OK folks, due to continuing issues with our classifieds section, I am going to see how it works by doing away with the separate classifieds area and creating forum areas for our classifieds. I have already created the new forums and you'll see them if you scroll down on the home page of the forum. There are positives and negatives to moving them to the forum. Positives: Possibly more exposure for the ads. Better integration with the forum software. Will put an end to headaches that the present system is causing me with ads mysteriously going away, being marked sold, etc. Negatives: No integrated "buy now" button. PayPal and/or payment info will have to be worked out through contact with the seller. No option to "renew" an ad. They are set to expire in 60 days and then if your item hasn't sold, you will just have to replace your ad. No "miles from me" indication but most complained that the feature didn't work anyway. So, we'll see how it works out and go from there. I will leave the current classifieds open for a few days. If you have items or an item for sale in the classifieds, please take the time to add it to the new area as your existing add will be gone in a few days.

OK folks. A number of people have complained that it is sometimes hard to find the member who is selling something in the classifieds. If you clicked their username, it opened up a profile in the classifieds but not the usual member profile. So, I've done some custom programming this evening that will hopefully make it easier for everybody. If you are in the classifieds now and click on the username of the person who posted the ad, it will open up their actual forum profile instead of the pretty much useless profile in the classifieds. I also changed it so that if you click the "contact buyer" link in a classified ad, it opens up the private message screen here on the forum. I tested it and it seems to be working correctly. Sometimes though when I make a change like that, it creates some unexpected changes that show up later. Hopefully it will work as I intend and it will make things better for all. If you notice any problems with it though, please let me know.

Yesterday I made a change to the classifieds. People that post in the classifieds have long complained that many of you never check the classifieds. I don't really agree with that but that is the perception. So what I have done is change it so that when an ad is posted in the classifieds, a link to it is automatically posted in the "Links to Classifieds" folder. Once an ad is posted, the link is automatically added within about 10 minutes. Hopefully this will work well and the ads will get more exposure. Now the initial responses to this change were mostly negative. I THINK that was because when I first made the change, links were made for all the existing ads and the entire home page of "new posts" and the new post button brought up nothing but classifieds. It completely buried all the other new posts that people like to read. Now that the initial import is over, the automatic posts will only be made as new classifieds are added. That is usually only 2-4 times a day and some days none at all so there shouldn't be a flood of posts like there was when I first did it. Sooooooooo.......based on this information regarding how it should work from now on, do most of you like it or not? I also want to hear again from those of you who posted in the polls area that you did NOT like it. Does this change your mind or do you still not like it? If everybody REALLY hates it...then just let me say that it was BradT's idea. If you like it, I don't mind taking full credit.

Hi, I am glad to have found your site. This forum looks greeat. I have a question, if I want to let other member know of the 1984 Venture I am parting out what is the best way to do that. I tried to click on the classifieds forum but it would not let me post. Do I have to be a paid member out of the trial period to do that? Thanks for the help in advance! Rick

OK folks. I have no answers, only questions. Once upon a time in the early days of this forum, I had a "Classifieds" topic area right here in the forum. That worked fine for the most part except that when somebody sold an item, they never posted that it was sold and it became full of items that had been there for months and/or years and nobody knew if it was still for sale or not. Even if it WAS marked sold, it still required me or one of the moderators to constantly go through the ads and delete the threads for the sold items. I determined that a better solution would be the classifieds software which I then purchased and installed. The advantage of the classifieds software is that items are automatically deleted after a pre-determined time unless the seller renews the ad. It really is the best way to do it except for one problem..... People who post their items in the classifies most often feel the need to then come to the forum and post that they have listed their items in the classifieds. That completely defeats the purpose because we are right back where we started, we have thousands of posts of items that we don't know are still available or whatever. Those post end up being here for years and do nothing but take up space, slow down search functions, etc. I've been trying to clean things up a bit but it's a slow process. This morning I did a keyword search for the word "Craigslist" and found over 600 threads of things like "seen on Craigslist"....since ads on Craigslist only run for about 30 days, almost all of those threads are useless now. I've deleted hundreds of threads this morning but still have a long way to go. I haven't even started on the "added to the classifieds" or "for sale" type threads yet. There are hundreds of those also. So what is the solution? A forum area dedicated to "seen on Craigslist" type ads? At least they would all be in one place and I wouldn't have to search the entire forum for them. I could just delete any in that folder that are over 30 days old. Same for "listed in the classifieds" type posts. They could be posted there also and deleted routinely. I'm looking for your suggestions. Unfortunately, there is no function available to automatically delete these forum posts after a certain amount of time. It has to be done manually, that is why they are best kept in the classified section but that does no good at all when a member feels that he has to post it here also. It would be easier if I just did a search, say for "Craigslist" and then just delete them all in one click but not all are items for sale. Some are discussions on how to search Craigslist and various other discussions. I now have to search and then click on and read most every post to determine if it needs to be deleted or not. It takes several hours to do.

Seeking your opinions. I've been thinking about adding a new category to our classifieds area. I don't know yet what it will be called but it will be for our established members who offer products and/or services to our members. I'm talking about people like Carbon_one, Skydoc, Rick Butler, MiCarl, etc. It will NOT be for any new person who just joins up for the purpose of peddling goods here. Posting to the new area would be with pre-approval only. It will require that a person has been an active member here for some amount of time and has proven themselves to be a true VentureRider member. The reason for this would be to make it easier for all of you to find these products and services as they often get stuck back several pages in the classifieds and are hard to find quickly. So....do you think that this would be helpful?
