  1. Changed the oil in my 04 today, it had reg oil that the guy I bought it from had put it. but this is only it third oil change. It did have a very low chirp to it. I changed to the mobil one racing oil and after about 10 miles, no more chirp, no whine just a perfectly quiet bike. Well except for the mufflers I modified. Mobil One 4T racing 10-40 Gregg:missingtooth:
  2. On our way back home from a Mississippi river ride a week ago, we rode in moderate rain for 4 hours. I pressure washed the junk off of it today and went for a ride. After about 10 minutes of riding in town , something in the front started to chirp like a bird. Rode about 10 miles ate lunch and went back home. I sprayed some WD40 on the front axle and no more chirp. I can't see where that should have done anything. Now it kinda bothers me. I'm wondering if it's something I need to be worried about? Thanks for the help, Bwhite 2000 RSV
  3. I have an '01 Venture. The whine/ chirp would drown out the loud pipes, and the stereo, and was almost painful to listen too. It would start at about 2800 rpm, and go away around 3500 rpm. I bought a clutch basket for a 1st gen (1983-1993?) Venture for $45 off Ebay and installed. The noise is almost completely gone now. It still comes in at the same rpms, but much, much quieter, and barely noticable now. A 1st gen Vmax (1985-2007) clutch basket will also fix the problem and are available for cheap on ebay all the time. If you have an air compressor and an impact wrench with a 30mm socket, the basket is easily swapped out in an hour or less and the special clutch holder tool isn't necessary. Download a service manual for a venture (any year) or a Vmax, and you'll have all the info you need to make sure you get it put back together correctly. Don't forget to buy a new gasket, as the original will rip apart when you pull the cover off. If you have any questions shoot me an email at remmerts@live.com. BTW, if you would like your bike to scream like friggin banshee, I now have a clutch basket for sale that will be music to your ears
  4. Hi everyone I have an '06 rstd with the very loud chirp which having tried different oils including amsoil with no success, have approached my dealer about getting an 'I' basket and althought the the 'I' basket number is good that they would have to get it from overseas and would cost around $450-$500. with no guarantee that it would be the 'I' basket, and as been said by some that it didn't fix the chirp. My request is does anyone have an 'I' basket available or can get hold of one and if so how much not including freight that would make it bit more financially better to risk. I read on a post from some time back I think from Kit with 'crickett' that he had the 'I' basket fitted but then fitted another which cured the chirp, was the 2nd basket fitted another 'I' basket? Would be thankfull for any help. Alan (from Adelaide Sth Australia)
  5. Hello everone, I have a in warrenty 06 rsmtd last week the dealer installed a new smaller gear that meshes with the gear on the clutch basket. The chirp was reduced for about 100 miles, then it came back. I called the dealer to report the chirp was back and he said he would call Yamaha and get back with me which he did. He gave me Yamaha's customer service number and said he has done all he could do. Now I need advice on what I should do next. Thanks for all of your help:sick: Midnight ryder
  6. Ok, I was cleaning up my computer last night and came across this link from several months ago. Just wondering has anyone on here tried this on their bike or know of someone who has? Looks interesting. Might even get rid of the "chirp and/or whine". http://www.efmautoclutch.com/dirt.shtml
  7. as i understand it, on the '99 and up models, there is a "transmission whine", AND a "chirp". i understand the "square cut gears" causing the whine, but WHERE is the chirp coming from? is it maybe the final drive not set correctly with relation to the rear wheel pins? can the rear wheel installation be altered to get rid of the chirp? like maybe in the wrong position in lining up the pins? just curious, i don't know squat about these new fangled bikes. just jt
  8. Well I'm finally getting the dreaded chirp noise on my 02 midnight. With about 11 k miles on it I guess as time goes on it will get more pronounced. Checked with the dealer about the basket change and he said the noise can still be there but may move to a different rpm and speed, but most likely won't go away. I will admit it is getting quite annoying, even my wife is noticing it to. I've had the bike almost 3 years and have tried to really like the bike, but just can't seem to get it to grow on me if you know what I mean, and now this. I like the bike for the power, comfort, and roominess, but I just can't get a liking to this bike. Was over at the dealer last week and they have an 07 on the lot on consignment, nice bike, low miles, I asked why it was for sale and the sales guy said he really didn't know the guy just wants to sell it. I've considerd selling mine last fall and now the whine issue may be the deciding factor this year, if I can only convince my wife as she likes the bike. I've been using Amsoil 10w40 since I've had it and what is the opinions on going to a heavier oil or back to dino oil ? will it quiet the chirp? Dealer says the repairs parts and labor would be around 400.00. but it may or may not cure it. Bike is out of warranty so that's not an issue. Not sure what to do at this point, any suggestions or opinions may be helpfull, thanks...
  9. My chirp is gone. Bought my RSTD in June with 7200 miles. Had the chirp and was very noticeable which was ok with me because I love this bike. I figured I would just put my earbuds in and sing along wih the music, drowning out the chirp, which worked and made me realized how good I could sing at 60 miles and hour. I left my ipod at work and today was a beautifuly 66 degree day in maryland and went for a 150 mile run. As soon as I started winding through the gears I realized something was missing, then after about 20 miles, I realized it was the chirp. I have been reading about having the clutch basket replaced this winter and different oils to use to elimanate the loud chirp, but now it's gone. I haven't done anything to this bike and I tried everything going through the gears at various speeds, but can't find it. Has this ever happen to anyone? I sort of miss it, but really enjoyed not having it on the 150 mile ride. Also, I use the same gas at the same station and am really puzzled.
  10. i think i have figured out the source of the chirp in the primary gears on yamahas. this gets tecnical. my rstd had the chirp about as bad as it gets. both my v-star 1100 and my 1300 in particular, have a terrible amount of primary gear noise. i always attributed it to the straight cut gears which are the noisyest gear pattern there is. my wing has straight cut primary gears and they are totally quiet. my 1600 nomad has straight cut gears and has a barely audible hum. you have to consentrate to hear it. i always figured gearlash either to loose or to tight was the main cause. this will make a difference in the noise level, but i think the real cause is the curvature on the face of the gear teeth. yamaha has picked a pitch that just happens to make noise. the only real fix in my opinion is to go to their engineers and have them try different pitches on the surface of the gear teeth untill they hit the right combo. or go to honda and kawa. to see what pitch they use. just my opinion. i think the clutch basket change is just a bandaid. it tightens the clearance up to a sweet spot that may or may not last depending on tooth wear. think about this the tranny gears don't sound off, and they are all straight cut.
  11. I took my '07 RSV into the dealer yesterday for a valve adjustment and to check a couple of other things. One of which was the clutch basket chirp. They ordered the new basket right away and should have it in a few days. I'm going to pick the bike up tomorrow so I'll have it to ride on the weekend and then I'll take it back in next week for the clutch install and valve adjustment. The clutch chirp has started to annoy me and I believe it is getting worse as I put on more miles. I've got about 30k on it now. Hope it helps a bit. Dennis
  12. Well, I finally got to admit my new to me 2005 RSV has it. I test rode it, heard it at lower speeds but not at highway cruising speeds so I purchased it. I must say here I used a full face helmet for the test ride, and the subsequent 4 hour ride home after with no headset listen to music or CB. I did notice it on the way home, but had a tail wind almost all the way. The other day it was quite hot, and I used my other 3/4 helmet for a 2 hour ride (no headset). The wind picked up quartering from my left front. I couldn't wait to get off that bike! What an irritating chirp at about 110 km (65mph). But what I did find was that by shifting body position, turning my head, or leaning my body to one side I could change the intensity of the chirp dramatically. I know if I was blessed with longer arms, I could lean well back and get away from it all together. So it seems to me a combination of motor load, wind speed direction etc etc. Has anyone else experienced this? This is NOT about a whine, but a chirp sound. It seems to be worst when both ears get it simultaneously. I don't know what to do about it. It is tolerable with full face and tunes, and I wore the 3/4 size helmet (no headsets) with foam ear plugs recently and it was OK also. I could hear it, but it was quite soft. I am not sure what to do about it. My local Yamaha dealer has not had much experience with either the RSTD or RSV, and I am not sure complaining would not fall on deaf ears. Has anyone had luck changing oil types or weight ie 10w30 or 20w50, dino vs synthetic etc? Thanks.
  13. Hey guys, help me out here. I haven't been around any other Ventures to compare my bike to so I need some help deciding if I have noise issues that can be improved on. My '07 has a fairly loud (at certain RPM's) but very tolerable gear whine. Or it sounds like a gear whine. I can't say that I have heard a "chirp". Now, what I call a "whine' is an even continuous noise. Where a "Chirp" is a series of spaced noises like a spot on a wheel or clutch basket rubbing on every revolution. I've read a lot of threads on this and it seems some people call chirps whines and whines chirps. LoL And some posts make me think that the 'I' basket fix will help the whine when it fixes the chirp. So, I have a whine that varies by speed. Will the 'I' basket do me any good? It would be warrantied but I don't want someone else tearing it apart if it isn't the fix for the noise that I have. Thanks for any replies!
  14. My 08 rsv has 950 miles and it has started to chirp at highway speed (60 mph plus). At the same time it vibrates like it has a dead miss. This condition is not constant but will come and go during a long ride. If I stop to rest (15 mins or so), the bike will run great for the next 15 to 20 miles before the chirp and vibration comes back. My fuel mileage so far averages between 35 to 38 mpg. I did the breakin sevice myself at 600 miles and refilled bike with mobil synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil. Can any one tell me how to kill this criket on steroids? No gear whine so far.

    Chirp

Is the chirp a warranty item? From what I have read here It seems that it can sometimes be solved, but not always. Is it a transmission or engine noise?
  16. My 84 Venture left us stranded on the side of the road once to often. The wife told me to get an new bike. We purchased a 2008 Black Cherry over Raven RSV. The wife loves the comfort of the passenger seat. I do not hear any excessive chirp or whine from the bike. It will take a while to get used to the handling of the 08 over the 84. I have attached a picture of the bike.
  17. It's true... I solved the chirping noise today. After having the I basket installed and going rounds with Yamaha Customer Service over the lack of a fix for the RSTD... I did away with the nasty chirp once and for all. I traded the RSTD for a M109R. I just couldn't take the noise that the RSTD put out. It was the noisiest bike I ever owned.. had about every harmonic in the human hearing range. Too bad too as the comfort of the bike was superb. Anyway... I will be posting a OEM luggage rack and possibly a couple other things I scuttled off the bike before trading it. This forum is awesome and proved very helpful with maintaining my 06 Deluxe. Cheers! And ride safe.... Emack
  18. Due in large measure to the assistance and information from this board, I was able to substaintialy reduce the problem around the "now famous" gear whine or chirp that is very noticable in the 2nd gen Royal Star Venture. My dealer installed the "I Basket" under warranty. Having all the notes and information supplied by the many members who have experienced this issued helped greatly. I am happy to say that the problem is probably 75% fixed. There is still some noticable chirping but it has moved out of the touring speeds, and the tone of the chirp is no where near as annoying as it was previously. I can live with the chirping sound now. What I cant understand is why Yamaha does not just simply FIX the problem to begin with rather than making owners go through and Un-announced warranty procedure. MickO:confused24:
  19. I posted before about a noise in my 87 venture, 38,000 miles, but would like to get a little more information if possible. I am new with the v4's, have only owned mine for about 3500 miles. It has a squeak or a chirp that is quite noticable at a idle but goes away or turns to a whine as soon as I bring the rpm's up to over 1000. The noise seems to be there with the clutch in or out, but does seem to change a little. I need to repair the clutch as it started to slip when not fully warmed up. Using a stethascope it sounds like the sound is coming form the back of the engine, loudest on the back valve cover or in the clutch area. I have all the body panels, bags, and the trunk off and have repaired all cracks in them so this would be the time to pull the engine if needed. Wonder if it could be the timing chain or a bad chain adjuster, and how would I check that? Also what is the chirp that is talked about? If needed I could try to get a sound track of the noise and post it. All help is appreciated!!!

    RSV Chirp

I ran across this on YouTube....see if you can hear the chirp just before he takes off. Of course, the Samson mufflers drown it out quickly. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI4WTOkY0Y4]YouTube - Yamaha Royal Star Venture[/ame]
  21. This message is for one member whom has asked me about the chirp. I will be happy to help, explain, but hey your email is blocked.....your contacts on this forum are blocked.....cannot talk to you with all the blocks. My email is kitcarsonplumbing@yahoo.com. Kit
  22. I am new to the v4. bought a 1987 VR a short time back. It makes like a squeak. When I bought it the dealer said is was the venture wine. I have riden it just about 3500 miles and no problem, the noise hasn't changed. This chirp is like three rapid chirps, a slight pause and starts back over. You don't notice it after the rpm come up some or while you are riding, but at a idle, it is rather loud. Is this the chirp that is talked about or is there something else I need to be worried about?
  23. All the dealer will give me is $13,700.00 for my bike.....which I think is quite fair.....and if someone wants a Venture......will most likely have 2000 miles on it.....by trade time or under next week.........I can live with it for another week.......Comes with a free Chirp and Lucas Oil Additive in the oil......so if a member wants a good deal......here it is free Chirp and All. Kit
  24. I have an 07 with 11k(6k in miles) this last couple of weeks I have begun hearing what appears to be a pronounced gear whine, at all speeds, if I close down the throttle it goes away until I throttle up again. I understand that straight cut gears can whine. But this does seem rather loud. As opposed to the high pitched chirp chirp that I already have which I take to be the clutch. If I didnt know any better it just sounds like it is running dry, obviously not as my oil level is correct. The rear splines have been done some time ago when I heard the creaking and took it in so I believe I could eliminate that as a cause. However, before I go see the dealer does anyone have any thoughts.
