I recently bought one to replace my Scorpion full face with which I took a nose dive. Haven't made any major trips but based on some of my few short trips here's my observation: This is supposed to be a heavy helmet but coming from my FF Scorpion I can't tell much difference (yet) The locking mechanism for the modular is metal on metal and seems easy to operate it has a chin wind curtain which does not seem removable. The chin bar is bigger then I am used to, though the instrument cluster still falls above the bar so I do not need to look down. It has a build in sun visor. The vents are great, I can actually feel air flowing over my head from the top vents (chin vent is below the windshield), as long as my face shield is not full open! There is an access panel which can be removed for a bluetooth module/headset. The helmet is noisier then a FF, but I read that going in. shield up it seems comparable to my old FF, but the further down the shield the more noise. So far I have three things which I am not real happy with: there are only three detents in the visor: 1/4, 1/2 and full open. you can not open the shield 3/4 (it really needs one) of the way which would put the bottom of the shield above your line of sight. Both the sunvisor and the shield seem to be thinner than I am used to and they vibrate when riding, and with both visors down(face shield either 1/4 or 1/2) the bottom edge of each shield seems to be interfering somewhat with my view of the instrument cluster because 1. it's there and 2 due to the vibration. I bought it at MC superstore on closeout in my size for $169. Overall I am not dissatisfied with it though I would argue that my FF fit me better. FWIW
2. Ok, to start this off. Those who don't know me should know that I have a rather large mellon on my shoulders. So consiquently it's hard for me to find a helmet to fit properly especially a full face or modular helmet. Every one I tried on would push back on my chin uncomfortably so I have worn a 1/2 or 3/4 for the past 6 years. After going over the 100,000 mile milestone on my RSV I got to thinking just how lucky I have been not to have been in a major MC accident or a minor one for that matter. The wife has been talking lately about going to a half helmet because of the heat or at least a 3/4 and I am somewhat ok with the 3/4, I am adamatly against her wearing a 1/2. Being the hypocrite that I am I used the excuse of my abnormally large "MELLON" as the excuse for my choice in helmet. Putting all that together and I decided to get a Zeus Modular helmet and give it a try. Several years ago I tried on a Zeus XL at Myrtle Beach Bike Week and although it was a bit snug it did have chin room, more so than any other helmet I have ever put on. So after much deliberation I pulled the trigger and ordered a 3XL (told you it was a big mellon) Zeus ZS 508W helmet and here is my take on this $90.00 Modular helmet. The helmet came with two helmet bags and extra hardware. Right out of the box I noticed that it had a pretty good finish on it. The flip mechanism worked easy and I was anxious to pull it over my head. The helmet slipped on like it was made for me, plenty of room inside(in fact I had to wear a schampa head rag to get that perfect fit feel). Now for the real test, closing the chin bar. When I dropped and locked the chin bar I was surprised to find about an inch to and inch and a half distance from the helmet to my chin. So far so good. Next thing I noticed was there was a lot of room around my ears, enough in fact for a headset with room to spare. The helmet feels sturdy as does the locking mechanism. Rode to work this morning and although it took some getting used to I really enjoyed the helmet. Lets get the bad out of the way first off. Over 55MPH I started getting wind noise, it wasn't terrible but it was noticable and coming from around the face shield at the top. I closed all vents to make sure and it made no difference at all. Like I said it wasn't terrible but after things being quite for the low speed it was noticable. I usually wear ear plugs with my half and 3/4 anyway so no big deal for me. That was it for the bad. The Good: No wind buffeting at all. (Most of my helmets have moderate buffeting) Vents seemed to work well, I could feel cool air on top of my head with them open. Chin vent directed air to face shield and kept it realativly fog free. Face shield has several detent and locks securely in each one. Fairly large view port so you don't get that claustraphobic feeling. Plenty of room for sun glasses. No undue pressure on your ears. Easy one handed operation. Optional Dual Lense Face Shield Optional Dual Lense "Electric" Fog Free Face Shield If I were to give it an overall grade I would give it a A-. Here is a link to a review of thier first gen modular.http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/zeus-helmet/zeus-helmet.htm I just read on their site that the 2009 model is SNELL certified. That's a first for a Modular I do believe. Here a a few pics of my helmet minus the neck roll. I hate those things. http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/c72b7a22.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/7b213680.jpg http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/SaltyDawg83/c3bc19e9.jpg
3. I am looking for anyone with a metal chin cowling, willing to take a few detailed pictures of it for me. I am doing some metal fabrication at work, and I thought it would be great to fabricate one for my bike, which is a '84. I thought I could fit a MKII cowling, but was told I have to change the engine guards. I have access to some Stainless Steel sheet metal and thought it shouldn't be too hard to fab one up. If you could you send me a PM with the pictures and some rough measurements that would be great. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!!
4. My VR stock windshield is too good for summertime in Oklahoma. I get very little air on my face. I have been riding the beast "naked" since the engine went back in and the air flow over the dash panel is very smooth and strikes me about the chin (same as my ZX11). I want to try a very short windshield and need someone's old one to cut down. Anybody have an old Gen 1 windshield?
5. It sounds worse than it really is... At some point in its long life, my new to me '89 VR had fallen on its right side and damaged the chin fairing. One of the bolt holes on this side has been torn completely away. I'm wondering if someone might have a damaged chin laying around with a good right side? My plan is to graft this side onto mine using some glue I got from the plastic supply place. They say it's supposed to make a molecular bond with ABS plastic. We'll see when I try to repair the cracks... Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
6. Just wondering if anyone has found a magic bullet for warm riding gear for the face. I have a good balaclava that does a good job but my forehead will start killing me within 30-60 minutes and I have to remove the thing. The fat head thing makes it get too tight in the helmet. I'd like to find something that I can wear around the neck and comes up to cover the chin area and even the nose if necessary. I rode today and the chin area was by far the coldest part on me.
7. i am installing a mk-1 chin on my mk-2 and it don't fit can anybody tell me how it go's on , pics maybe , is there spacers ? the crash bar on the rite side is off a mk-1 and the chin do's not fit it . Thom

9. I was all set to get Goldie inspected Friday afternon. I pulled it out into the driveway and started it up, left it idling, and went in to get my wallet and helmet. Came out and smoke was rising from the side cover! Seems that I forgot to redress the power lead for the running lights on the chrome chin, and it was against the exhaust pipe. Stupid me!!!!! Now I get to chaqnge out the harness, and hope that the regulator, and my new high output stator, are still all right...
10. Will a '86 chin cowling fit an '84 VR?

12. I have a Shoei RF-900 helmet and am looking at headsets. If you have this setup, what headset are you using? I have been looking but the mic's look so huge and I do not have a whole lot of room from my chin to the the chin part of the helmet. I can figure out the wife's helmet, it is newer HJC and looks like it is designed for a headset. And, she has plenty of room at the chin area.

14. Just got my new Nolan N102 n-com helmet - man, do I love it! Some great improvements over the N100E that I have been using for three years. I loved the N100E too, but she's yesterday's news now that I have had my head in the N102!! (The N102 n-com is $250 at Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse, and the Platinum color is very close to the 2005 RSV) Both the N102 and N100 are modular flip-front helmets. The N102 is proportioned a bit differently, giving slightly more forehead and chin room (both front and sides of the chin). The new latch release mechanism is really sweet - much easier to use than the old one, once you figure it out. Just pull forward with your thumb on a little lever in the center of the chin bar, causing a bigger lever to push out from the front of the chin bar - squeezing these two together causes the helmet to open. The shield ratchets and covers are significantly improved. Both helmets have Nolan's proprietary anti-fog shield that works really well, and the N102 has a new dark 1/2 shield outside the main shield that works like sunglasses. Nolan calls this the VPS (vision protection system). I am a little disappointed that the VPS is not extra dark, as it will not make a significant difference when riding directly into a setting sun, but it let me make one simple mod that solves that problem too. I just put a strip of blue painter's tape inside the top of the VPS shield. This is above the normal line of vision, but allows a slight tip of the head to completely block the direct rays of the fire ball. Here are a couple of pictures: That last one is with the VPS shield flipped up and the main shield down, but it looks a little strange because the whole front is flipped up too, so you are looking at the top of the helmet through the shield. For someone who already has the N100E with extra shields, the shields are ALMOST interchangeable. Actually, without the VPS on the N102, they ARE interchangeable. But to use the VPS shield too, you need a little notch cut in both sides, like this: A rotary tool with a small steel cutter works fine to modify the older shields. I modified my old extra dark shield so I have both it and the VPS for summer riding. On to the Headsets. I have the cheapest J&M clip-on headset on my old N100E, and I have been very pleased with the quality of the sound. I ordered the mid-level 277 series for the N102 n-com. Love the way the helmet is designed to take an integrated headset and the way J&M used that for theirs. The sound of the 277 series is better, but not by a huge amount. Although the mid-range is more crisp, the bass is not as pronounced as it was with the cheapies. I verified this was the speakers instead of the helmet by unplugging the speakers from the old one and putting them in the N102 after I had completely mounted the new headsets. This weekend I am meeting my brother who has a new set of J&M 584 series (their best, and lot more expensive). I'll compare them and report back next week. Ride safe, Goose
