Well, we did it! We made it back last night on our 11 day western bike trip. We left 2 Saturday's ago and headed west. Here is a quick recap of the route we took: Sat - Little Rock to Amarillo via I-40. (Hotter than blue blazes across Oklahoma, 103-104 degrees). Sun - Amarillo to Taos NM via Dumas Tx, Clayton NM, Cimarron NM, and Eagle Nest NM. Beautiful ride! Cimarron Canyon is a neat ride, and Taos is an interesting place to visit. Very old, and you better like adobe structures. Mon - Toas to Pagosa Springs, Co. First time on the trip to go up to 10000+ altitude. Northern NM is beautiful, and southern Colorado heading into Pagosa gave us a glimpse of the beauty that lied ahead. Tues - Pagosa Springs to Gunnison Co via Wolf Creek Pass and the Continental Divide, Salida Co.(Cool looking old town with the Arkansas River rapidly flowing through it. We wanted to see the headwaters of the Arkansas because we live in a town where the Arkansas river is a half mile wide with barges going up and down), Hwy 50 over Monarch Pass (11300 and Cont Divide again). Wed - Gunnison to Durango via Hwy 50 to Black Canyon of the Gunnison, to Montrose, then MILLION DOLLAR HWY to Ouray, Silverton, Durango. Hwy 50 was stunning! Black Canyon was unbelievable. Million Dollar Hwy was CRAAAAZZZZYYYY!!!! Thursday - Durango to Page, Az via Four Corners and Monument Valley. This route and the sites we stopped at was riding on another planet, or shall I say a number of different planets. Seemed like every time we went around a corner the terrain and scenery changed to some other worldly site. Gorgeous area. Really got a feeling of being WAY out in the middle of nowhere. Fri - Page to Sedona Az via Grand Canyon, Az. No words to describe! Went in the East Gate and worked our way around all the viewing points to the South Rim. Had to stop in the middle of the Hwy to wait for a HUGE elk to saunter across the road. Rode through light rain from Grand Canyon to Flagstaff. Made it into Sedona right before sunset. Sat - Sedona area. Spent all day in and around this area. Unique and very relaxing place. Rode up the mountain to Jerome, Az. Very cool old mining town with a great biker/artsy feeling. Great food and shops, and the view back to Cottonwood and Sedona is wonderful. Sun - Sedona to Tucumcari, NM via 89A and I-40. Perfect temperature, and the scenery was great considering it was an interstate highway. Had a great BBQ lunch in Albuquerque at Rudy's. Mon - Tucumcari to Ok City via I-40. Two words, BORING and WINDY! Fought the wind so much, by the time we got to Ok City I was ready to fall off the bike. LOL. Tues - Ok City to Home via I-40. Three words, GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! It had been so long since we had seen green grass and huge green trees, it made us realize how beautiful it is. Overall an unbelievable ride! My honey took 1197 pictures with the new camera I bought her for the trip. Not to mention we took several with our iPhones. I will post some of them whenever we get them loaded on the iMac. Red (my RSTD) was perfect. Never a glitch of an issue. Talked to hundreds of bikers and everyone was super nice and complementary of each others bikes. Had numerous people ask about what brand my bike is, and several wanted to know where I got the passenger armrests my wife enjoyed using. Boat loads of Harleys out there. I would say that a very close percentage estimate of brand of bikes we saw was 80% Harley, 15% Goldwing and BMW, and the other 5% was the rest us in the bike world. I know a lot of people buy Harley's because thats the dominate brand name and the image is what a lot of people go for, but after seeing SO MANY Harley's on this trip, I realize that these bikes can't just be about looks and image. They must be pretty good quality too for so many of them to be on these longe range rides fully packed and performing great. I think pretty much everybody makes a quality bike nowadays. I'm gonna figure out a way to have me a summer home in Colorado. LOL. BTW, the Helicoil job I did on my front fork held perfectly. P.S. I was so sad to read that Warrior passed away. I had never personally met him, but I had posted back and forth with him a couple times on the site. From what everyone that knew him has posted, he must've been an awesome guy, and what a great loss. My prayers are with his family.

I'll be riding Western Colorado a bit over Labor Day Weekend! I'll leave Orem, Ut. Saturday morning, Provo Canyon to Heber, East through Wolfe Creek Pass and on to Vernal Utah where I'll meet up with a new friend & his wife, and we'll ride all the way around Flaming Gorge. I'll stay with them that night. Sunday morning I'll ride Dinosaur National Monument, Co., and then to Rangely, Co., where my uncle lives. I'll go to church with them, spend the rest of the day with them, and spend that night with them. Monday I'll ride South on 139 Lost Highway, Douglas Pass, & down to (through) Colorado National Monument (Past Fruita), through Grand Junction, SouthEast & then South on 65 through Mesa & to Cedaredge, U-turn back to I-70 East, North at Rifle up 13, & West on 64 near Meeker back to Rangely for the night. Tuesday I'll head back West through Vernal and go SouthWest at Duchesne through Indian Canyon to Helper, North West on Highway 6 through Soldiers Summit and on back home through Spanish Fork Canyon. I figure a little over 1100 ride miles. If anyone out there is interested in meeting up or riding part of the ride with me, email me at dougnrdn@gmail.com. Doug Nordin

Took me awhile to work up the courage to sell my 89 VR. This was my first true touring bike and I have throughly enjoyed it. I am looking for something a little smaller, possibly a FJR so I can do some canyon carving here in the Texas Hill Country. If interested in my VR check out the classifieds and inputs on what my next bike should be are welcome as well.

Any stops worth while on Route 66 from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon?

Since many of us are winter bound and looking forward to riding again, I found an article to wet your riding appetite. If you can't ride then at least we can plan for the next ride. It turns out I have been on 2 of the article's chosen routes (#7 and #2). I definitely want to check out some of the other routes too like the Million Dollar Road. Personally, I think 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon is on my top 5 best routes but not listed here. Also Mingus Mountain through Jerome AZ was another one for me. What is on your top five list as the best routes you have motorcycled on over the years? http://motorcycles.about.com/od/placestoride/ss/The-15-Best-Motorcycle-Roads-In-America.htm

Having visited Boquillas Canyon, I found this interesting. U.S. Proposes Unmanned Border Entry With Mexico I'm not sure what the impact will be, besides making this spot less desirable to visit. Already you can't visit the canyon without being harassed by vendors. On the other hand, it would be a pretty good spot to start the Ironbutt Border-to-Border Insanity, if it is a vehicle crossing. I don't post much on this site but I read it every day. I thought I would share a slide show of our recent 10 day motorcycle trip to the Grand Canyon. (Gloss Mountain State Park, Black Mesa, Chapel of the Cross in Sedona, Great Sand Dunes, Durango Silverton Train, Four Corners Monument, Monument Valley, Painted Desert, Aztec Ruins, Valley of the Gods in Utah, the Grand Canyon, a few unexpected gravel and muddy roads (road construction) and lots of great restuarants) We traveled a total of 3200 miles leaving Central Arkansas on Friday Sept 9. Glad my wife and I were on a comfy RSV. The bike made it just fine, even at 10,200ft over the mountains coming into Taos, NM. We plan to make a major trip like this once a year as long as we can. It was a fantastic adventure. Click the link below and it will load automaticlly. And on June 15th, we’ll be leaving on the ultimate road trip. The plan at this time is to head east across Oregon, angle northeast across Idaho to Yellowstone Park. After a tour of the Park, we’ll continue east through Wyoming to Mt. Rushmore. From there, we’ll head south to Colorado Springs for the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. Then it will be on to the Grand Canyon for a trip on the Skywalk and a helicopter flight over the Canyon. On to Vegas, where we take in a show or two, northwards to Reno, and then back to our home in Springfield OR. We’ve scheduled a full month for the journey. If there’s anyone out there who would be on, or close to, our route who would like to meet for coffee, a meal, or just a quick visit (while we rest up for the next segment of the journey) give us a shout. And, maybe, if anyone out there would have shop space available for maintenance (or repairs) you could let us know. We can’t be specific about when we’ll be anywhere, but we will have the laptop with us and will check messages and emails at least once a day, maybe more. Depends on when and where we can get internet service. We’ll be sure to post some pictures when we get back. Here is the link to the build project photo album in photobucket if you want to take a gander at how it was accomplished. http://s1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc381/vicco2763/ __________________

I looked at all the boards...couldn't figure out where to post something like this...feel free to move it if needed. Anyway, me and a buddy are gonna make a trip to the Grand Canyon June 18th-25th. Our plan is to head out on Friday (June 1http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif and be back the next Friday (June 25). It'll be a moderate riding 2 of the first 3 days...and then EASY RIDING for 2 days out in Flagstaff...and then 2 moderate days riding back to Arkansas. Do you feel like seeing the Grand Canyon? Come with us. 2-3 people to a room...so the costs won't be that bad. For more information: http://www.arkansasbiker.net Wally

I'd been hoping I could make it at least one year before I fell over on my bike. Now I'm not talking about wrecking or having to lay it over (which I haven't yet done), I'm talking about falling over while being stopped. Well, I finally fell over yesterday with just one month to go before I had my bike for a year. And unfortunately, there were witnesses. A young friend of mine who had been a trumpet player in our church orchestra found out that I had a bike. He has two and he was in town last week so he felt we needed to go for a ride. I invited our minister of music and a couple from my Sunday School class to come along, they agreed. We were to ride from Amarillo to Palo Duro Canyon and back. Not a long ride by any means, but it sure is scenic and for me, a lot of fun. We were to meet at the Hollywood Cinema at I-27 and Hollywood, then ride east to Washington St. and south to the turn off for the canyon, picking up our minister of music along the way (he was waiting at the convenience store on the old Claude highway turn off). The decision was made by the masses that I lead the group, so after I jump-started a fellow riders shiney gold wing with my crappy old 84 VR, we headed out. We made it just past the canyon turn off when we had to stop. Our minister of music's Harley had the top steering column nut trying to rotate itself off. Luckily we had a set of sockets, so with a few quick turns we were back on the road. We went on down in the canyon and ran the entire route through the canyon. We stopped back in at the horse stables where they had a large covered area with some tables set up. It was time for a soda. I pulled in first, right up to the curb and at a slight angle to lean my bike properly into the uphill slope. Came to a complete stop, killed the engine, grabbed the front brake hard, spaced my feet properly (so I thought) and leaned forward so my wife could dismount. I don't know what went wrong after this, but it felt like she had her entire weight on the left side (uphill side) peg and was leaning outward. I couldn't hold the bike straight, it started to lean, and lean, and lean, and lean until there was absolutely no way II could recover or regroup. And down I went. Not hard, nothing got broken and I suffered no injuries, but I was thoroughly embarrassed and flustered. I promptly picked the bike back up, caught my breath and set the side stand. Now this in itself is a milestone for me as this is the largest displacement motorcycle I have ever had to pick up from being laid over. It shook the wife up a bit, she didn't fall, she was already off the bike when I fell, but she didn't like seeing me fall. Anyhow, we drank our Pepsis, chatted for a bit, then rode back into town for ice cream. Even with the fall, it was a great ride and I'm looking forward to the next outing.

Is anybody else going to tour after Cody roundup? Black owl, and Grandpagak and I are riding to Cody together but after that I'm looking at possibly heading down to the Grand Canyon then Texas way then back up to Iowa. Will be camping along the way. God Bless. Mike

It is grand it takes some time to get a feel for what you are looking at. I looked in to it for quite a while then saw a helicopter flying through about half way down and a quarter of the way across and it was just a speck I took a picture of it on 30x zoom to give an idea of the size of the canyon. The colors change with the movement of the sun and clouds very quickly. I have heard many languages spoken here more than any place I have ever been there are people here from all over the world.

Back from Calif Trip, ( Car trip, not bike ) . Pretty good weather. I got to ride my favorite Old Roads, from High School days. " Aliso Canyon Road " ----- " Big Tujunga Canyon "--- Calif. SR-2 Via , Angeles Crest Highway. And, " Little Tujunga Canyon " A couple of the Best rides in the Los Angeles, Ca. area. ( link-- http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/LittleTujungaRd.htm ) Little Tujunga canyon is one of the featured rides, on Pashnit Tour's. Ride was on a 97 FLH, very well broke in , high milage, Very well maintained, old war horse. ( belongs to sister and Her hubby ) Quite a hand full of bike on that winding road !!! -----( 2 ea. photo's attached ) There was a massive number of riders on these two roads, last Sunday. Back in 1959 and 1960 I might pass 4 or 5 bikes running these two roads, ( on my old 47 WL, or 55 matchless, and 60 Puch ) But this trip, must have passed at least 100 bikes or more running the road. Saw one group of at least 30 Vintage, and new Triumphs. ( no police were encountered, or seen ) Total ride was only about 125 miles, but it was a great ride !! If anybody is interested, my new 08 TrailBlazer Averaged 21.58 MPG, for the entire 2550 mile trip from SEA to LAX and back. It has the Inline 6 engine installed. Average Fuel Price, up and down the West Coast, was about 2.35 per gallon. OK, thats done, now time to cut the grass, and wash the cars !! And rideing season just around the corner, get those tune ups done folks !!!

Just got back from a week long "girls" trip to Arizona with my mom, aunt and 2 cousins. Got to see the Grand Canyon and Sedona for the first time in my life!!! I was speechless! I never knew the desert could be so pretty!! Thought I'd throw in a pix. I'm the one hunkered down. Also, we drove up 89A "Oak Creek Canyon". What a thrill! Hope to bike it someday with the hubby. First day back at work and I'm beat. My mom and aunt are in their early 70's and kept us "kids" running from sun up to sun down for 7 days straight!! Wish I had half their energy!

I am thinking that we would like to take a trip on the RSV leaving Virginia and riding a loop seeing the Grand canyon first and then proceeding north to Yellowstone then on back to Virginia. I would plan on camping a couple days then staying in a motel the third day. I would like feed back on the best time of year to do this as well as routing and camping information. Maybe there is some suggested reading material. Our trips in the past have been 3 or 4 day, staying at night in motels. Wife agrees to try the camping, but we will still eat in restaurants. I am planning 3 to 4 weeks to do this trip. All suggestion appreciated
