  1. Hi everyone! My major maintenence project on my 86' is coming along and today I got my R1 calipers. So now my question is which pads? I like the cleanliness of the cermics but is this going to halve the life of my $200+ new rear rotor? In the past I would by pads all willy nilly but since I'm starting with mostly new stuff (R1 calipers, delinked brakes, new rotors, SS lines and E3's) I would like to monitor the wear better and overall just start with the best. We don't ride fast but pull a very heavy trailer. Thanks everyone!
  2. My '05 Tour Deluxe is having some serious front brake issues, need ideas on where to start. The bike has about 50k on it, I'll admit, the brake fluid is about a year over due on flushing. My problems are these: the front brake lever is hard to squeeze - meaning if I squeeze the lever with the normal force to moderatly slow down, I barely get any braking action, if I squeeze harder the brakes just about lock up; other issue- when I do find that sweet spot in the front brake lever for good moderate braking, the brakes pulsate pretty bad (like a warped disc) and the front end dances all over the place. Needless to say, this thing is scary to try to ride. I hope with all of these brilliant minds here, I might find an answere Thanks, Dave
  3. anybody know what the little hose under water pump is for and should it be hooked to anything?? it heads toward the oil filter and just dangles there. another thing is just put on a newn front tire "avon" and now i have the slightest "ticking, zzzzzzz, faint card in the spokes sound, slows down when i do and doesnt change under braking or weaving back and forth. I check bearings when wheell was off and seemed ok and torqued to specs, what the @#$% gives.
  4. Today on my way home from work my bike learned to make a really obnoxious noise. The noise is like a heavy grinding sound coming from the rear end area. It only makes this sound when decelerating with a lot of engine braking AND application of the rear brake. It does mot make this noise with just rear brake or just engine braking. The rear pads are at about 50% wear and the rotor looks smooth on both sides. The oil level is the rear is correct. Any ideas?
  5. MK1's. '84 Venture Std. Has anyone removed the brake lines to the anti-dive units? I did this on a '82 Suzuki GS1100 and the braking improved drastically. Right now braking is really vague until much pressure is applied.
  6. I just bought this http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=KAT-MATRIX&cpc=SCH I plan to mount it on the bike this year and get some real numbers for performance. Use to Measure your Vehicle's: Braking force Cornering Horsepower G-Force 0-60 second acceleration * 1/4-mile time/speed *
  7. I am curious to know what you have experienced with the ABS and/or linked braking systems (either with ABS or without) on other bikes that you have driven (since the RSV does not have linked or ABS brakes). I layed my RSV down after I locked up the rear brake in an emergency situation and posted that thread here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29532.
  8. I have visores 2006 Venture for all lights and installed all but the head light, I don't know how to install the headlight without braking it. Any help Thanks Ron Dunne PEI Canada
  9. Folks, There's been lots of dialog about front-end wobble, but I have a peculiar variant which happens under very hard braking. As in "I think I'm going to hit this car and die" hard braking. It happened to me in November on the Interstate when traffic came screeching to a halt and I obviously wasn't looking ahead very attentively, and then last night at maybe 60 mph somebody pulled out RIGHT in front of me. Thanks to God that I didn't hit anything either time, or fall over with the wobble. In both cases, while on the brakes hard, I think I felt the front tire partially lock, and the front wheel and handlebars went into a violent wobble that was very difficult to control despite my death-grip on the bars. Last night, being the second time, it occured to me as I was braking that the front end would go crazy. I want to be clear that this is NOT a whole-bike weave, but a front-end wobble; I've felt both in the past. A little history if you're interested. I got my 87 with 45,000 miles on it and a lot of deferred maintenance. It exhibited a strong tendency toward the wobble at mid-speeds (30-45), but ONLY if I removed my hands from the bars. Light hand pressure always damped it out. It also had a touch of the high-speed whole-bike weave. Over the last 1.5 years I've done the following: -New tires - 38psi F, 40psi R -Progressive fork springs and rear shock unit -Greased and checked rear swingarm and linkage -Inspected, cleaned, packed and adjusted steering head bearings. I've tried a couple different preloads from the factory light setting to something a little tighter - no difference. -Checked wheel bearings. -Installed Superbrace Through all this the whole-bike-weave has diminished; what remains is minimal, self-damping and I'm convinced it's normal in a full-dress bike. The wobble is mostly gone, with the single biggest factor being the new front tire (which has been the case in the past for me on other bikes). I can remove my hands at mid-speeds and it doesn't automatically start wobbling as before. However, even now it only takes the slightest provocation to start one. If I hit a little rock with the front wheel, or tap one of the grips with my hand, it will start. The braking wobble feels like the regular front-end wobble, but the big difference is that it wobbles with my hands tight on the bars which it normally won't do. The wobble has one other manifestation. When doing u-turn excercises (from the MSF experienced class), at low speed with the wheel at or near lock, I feel a bit of that wobble even though my hands are firmly on the bars. I am sure these are all related; different manifestations of the same condition: 1) Mid speeds in a straight line, hands off bars, slight bump in road or tap on handlebars. 2) Higher speeds, hard on brakes, straight line, death grip on bars. 3) Low-speeds, tight u-turn, hands firmly on bars. Anybody else had these experiences? How'd ya fix it? Jeremy
  10. Dear Yamaha, It is okay to do a little parts bins raiding to update the Venture. Really! Here's some suggestions. Simply take the item or idea and adapt it to the RSV. Some will bolt on, some may need a few tweaks. (you can borrow my hammer) It should actually be quite simple to do it. In fact, give me a week at your factory with all the parts available and I'll put it together for you. Here's my list. (cut-n-pasted from your site) Take from... The Stratoliner: ~ ...Computer-controlled, {twin-bore}, fuel-injection monitors multiple engine parameters to calculate perfect mixture under all conditions; wide-angle 12-hole fuel injectors provide excellent atomization. ~ Exhaust Ultimate Power valve (EXUP) inside the two-into-one exhaust system boosts torque in the 2500-3000-rpm range. ~ 12-spoke wheels evoke a thick spoke look, but carry modern tubeless radial tires; a 130/70-18 front and a fat 190/60-17 rear. ~ Position beams within the main headlight housing provide great visibility. ~ Left-thumb operated high-beam switch, and right-thumb activated accessory driving light switch for great visibility. ~ Bright multi-reflector headlight, LED taillight and amber turn signals behind clear lenses give a custom look. ~ Oxygen sensor and three-way catalyst reduce emissions. ~ Sidebags detach easily for cleaning. The Warrior: ~ Super-rigid 41mm Kayaba inverted telescopic fork in beefy, cast-aluminum triple clamps gives 5.3 inches of travel for exceptional sport-oriented performance. ~ Link-type, preload and rebound adjustable single shock delivers outstanding rear-wheel tracking for precise handling and plush ride quality. ~ Dual 298mm front disc brakes and radial-mount four-piston calipers and a 282mm rear disc combine for incredible, supersport-spec stopping power. ~ Braided stainless clutch and throttle cables. (Do the brakes while you're at it.) The NEW Raider: ~ Wiring harness uses lightweight AVSS wires, and switchgear wiring is routed inside the handlebar for a clean appearance. The FJR1300: ~ Standard equipment Unified Braking System w/ABS: The front brake lever activates six of the eight front braking pistons and one rear piston; the rear brake pedal activates one rear piston and the other two front pistons—for balanced anti-lock braking in all conditions. Most don't really care about new colors. We'd like some new technology from your flagship. Also...it still has a cassette player?!? Now, you've got all these parts. Most could be easily adapted (i.e. head & tail lights!) Thanks for your time. Keep just changing colors on the RSV and you'll not get anymore of mine, though...or my money.
  11. I put together my little Harbor Freight trailer a few days ago. Got everything working and hooked up and went for a 150 miles ride yesterday to check everything out and to get used to towing. I didn't load it with anything. I'll wait to do that another day. not a whole lot of difference once under way. A little more clutch was needed to start out and braking seemed normal although I kept longer distances between me and others. best part really was all the strange looks I got. Nobody here (that I've seen) tows a trailer with their motorcycle. Passed a group of riders. Thought some of them were gonna break their necks looking back!
