I am sure many of you will laugh at me but here it goes. The day is coming, although hopefully not for several years, when it will be just too much for me to get my leg over my 1st gen Venture and it will be just too heavy for me to handle it safely. I'm sure not looking forward to that day as I like my VR as much or more than any of the bikes I have owned over the last 49 years. Well, at the Toronto Bike show this past weekend, I saw a new model BMW that I think will allow me to keep on riding and enjoying it. Here it is:http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2012models/2012-BMW-C650GTc.jpg Yes, its a scooter that BMW calls a C650GT which has all the features that I think will make it an extremely comfortable two up touring machine. The only limitation that I can see is that it may not allow me to pull a trailer. Has anyone here seen one of these on the road or rode one? Here in Ontario, I know BMW will feature this model at their demo day this spring.

I had plans for the weekend but would like to see someof the new bikes. STAR will be there as will Triumph and BMW. All with models I want to check out. Discounts on admission availoable via Progressive web site I imagine as well as Triumph. I will likely try to go early Saturday.

It is becoming an addiction. Buying, selling, and trading bikes. I have an opportunity to trade my fully farkled 2008 KLR650 to a guy for a 1995 BMW R1100GS that also appears to be fairly well equipped. 9000 miles on the KLR 60000 miles on the BMW What to do, what to do...... Perhaps there is a 12 step program. RR

This has been a good year in the bike turnover department. Think I may have found one to hang onto for a while. If you may recall, I recently picked up a 1975 Moto Guzzi 850T barn find. Well, the word got out and I sold it for $300 more than I paid without even putting a battery in it. So, now there is a hole on the garage floor that needs filled. It was filled Sunday with a 1986 BMW K75C with just over 20,000 miles on it. Was working with the previous owner for 3 or 4 weeks to get the pricing to where it needed to be. He finally gave in on Saturday and I picked it up on Sunday. Got plates and insurance today and went for a 25 mile run to the grocery store (that's 2 miles away). Need a different seat, but other than that, it is a really smooth little bike. Think I found an almost new Corbin just a few miles away. Need to do some investigation to see if it will fit. For those not initiated to the BMW world, the engine in this bike is affectionately known as the flying brick. It is considered to be one of the most reliable, long lasting engines ever put in a motorcycle. And smoooooooth. It needs a new front shoe (age cracking), but otherwise ready to ride, ride, ride. It will likely be one of the boy's bike since it is a tad small for me. The 3 cylinders act like a V4 - it likes the revs. The power band hits about 4000 RPM and just moves out. Decent front disc brake and an anemic drum rear brake. Great bike. RR

So, I've been studying what kind of bike might replace the old VR. I've lusted (temporarily) after a classic BMW touring bike, but I got some second thoughts after reading this article....(posted in the Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, about a case in San Francisco). Besides my bike has the same effect...on the female species...which is why I can never take anybody along with me...you know... just to maintain some sense of decorum at our family oriented rallies. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/car-life/road-sage/why-one-uneasy-rider-sued-bmw-for-an-awesome-problem/article2426196/

BMW is a little pricey for me, but I could really use this feature on my RSV...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIy0e1p1fuI&feature=youtu.be

I think that a more fun and fair comparison should be more apples to apples. Give your experience and opinion for your specific year. I purchased a new 80 Goldwing and love it. I did not like the other competitor’s models at all if they actually had a competitor. I think that the only competitor was the BMW and that time I think BMW was the sport touring standard. BMW just was too expensive for me; also I really did not like the BMWs lines. Just one complaint and that is the 80 Goldwings cornering capabilities. I’m no hot dog but one main fun part of motorcycling was cornering. The cornering ability of the 80 Goldwing caught me my surprised, after the purchase. The 80 Goldwing was my 1st Honda for previously I owned a small 1969 90cc Kawasaki then a 1974 Yamaha TX500 then a 1974 Yamaha YZ125. So I did not have a Honda preference. I sold my 80 Goldwing for raising a family. 27 years later I got the Touring Bike itch with some nostalgic feelings. I wanted my 80 Goldwing back for nostalgic reasons and wanted to own a collectable. It was kind of like wanting to have your 57 Chev back. I found some beautiful 80 Goldwings, however in my search, the Yamaha Venture surfaced. I recalled in 83 when the Venture was introduced and Wow I wanted one even though I was selling my 80 Goldwing. I toss and turned between the 80’s Goldwing and the Venture MKI or MKII. Did a lot of soul searching and settled on the MKII. Like make vehicles history the design goes through some ugly years. Like the Mustang, some of the Mustang’s years were butt ugly. The Goldwing outwardly design changed a lot between 1980 and 1993 and I did not like most of those years design. I’m limiting to 1980 thru 1993 for my purchased, for the MKI and MKII looks are really similar, and in my pocket books range. The MKII got most of the points. I personally liked its design better than the Goldwings, but the Goldwings reverse weighted in very heavily. Then the Goldwings cornering ability came into play. Venture was more top heavy, The engine size really was not a factor for the 80 Wings 1100cc was plenty for me. I would have given the MKI more consideration but the famous 2nd rear issue really done it in. Also the Goldwings seems to be in general more expensive than the Venture in similar condition. Oh I also did like the Wings plastic for the sole purpose when cleaning the bike, But then the plastics took away from the motorcycle looks. So would I prefer my 89 Venture to a Goldwing up to 1993. The Venture won. Now today if I were to buy a new bike and I could afford it. The choice would be between the BMW and the Goldwing and without any test drives yet I’m leaning to the Goldwing. Maybe I should just ride into the BMW and Honda dealer for a test drive. Then maybe I better not, For what I don’t know and experience won’t hurt me. Todays Venture would not even be in the selection. I’ve heard many talk about the riding comfort. I’ve never really had an issue with comfort for I seem to adapt to the Bikes configuration. So there, you have my apple to apple comparision. What is your apple to apple comparision?

So, Saturday I decided to take my 01 BMW F650 GS Dakar out for a ride. Great bike and a lot of fun. The battery'd been fading for the past few months and everytime I'd start out it would "drag" a little and then light off. Well, Saturday I found I'd waited too long-no cranking. That's OK, 'cause it was my own fault for waiting too long. Anyway, got the new battery today and went to change 'em out. Never done that on this bike in the three years I've owned it. Get the manual out. OK, let's see, unlock trunk bracket and remove trunk, unlock and remove tailpiece, remove seat, remove right front TURN SIGNAL(?) (4 bolts), remove right side trim (5 bolts), remove center trim piece (2 bolts) and voila, there's the battery! What the ?? Must be getting old, 'cause I remember doing a ring job on an H2 750 Kawasaki and only having to pull 18 bolts to drop the exhaust and pull the Heads and Cylinders!! It's like the little elves in the black forest hung the battery on piano wire and then built the bike around it. No wonder BMW service is so pricey:whistling:

The new BMW K1600 GTL looks like my Gen 1 replacement when they start coming on the used market a couple of years from now. (I assume Yamaha will still have done nothing by then). Anyone else started looking at them? At least on paper as there are none at the dealers till spring.

I received my latest copy of Motorcycle Consumer News today and it had a review and comparison of the 2012 Goldwing and BMW 1600. The article rated the GW higher in most categories. I think the BMW had better brakes and better handling due to its lower mass. Interesting read if you get a chance. Dennis

I have seen a few BMW K1200LT around and I am intreged because they look like a better type of 1st gen venture. Does anyone have experience riding both of these bikes and tell me what the differences are? Iowa Guy

(MUNICH, GERMANY) Norbert Reithofer, CEO of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, announced today that Harley-Davidson Motor Company has accepted a friendly merger agreement by BMW and will combine their motorcycle manufacturing facilities. Mr. Keith E Wandell, CEO of Harley-Davidson, will become president of the the worldwide motorcycle division, which will include the current BMW Motorrad division, Harley-Davidson, and Husqvarna. "We have long felt the need to diversify our motorcycle production by adding models more attuned to the cruiser market," Herr Reithofer said. "With our current BMW line, our Husqvarna line, and now the new Harley-Davidson line, we will be able to penetrate all parts of the worldwide motorcycle market." Mr. Wandell stated that the move, which has taken the motorcycling world by surprise, was accepted by Harley-Davidson as a way to strengthen its capital base, which has never recovered from the 2008 financial meltdown. "We also are looking for ways to streamline our operations by combining research and development, design, and marketing components of our motorcycle lines." The two men showed off a prototype of the kind of combined work the new combined companies will be capable of by announcing the BMW H1600R, which features a Harley motor in the body of the current K1600GT, suitably modified, with a distinctive orange and blue paint scheme to combine the colors of the two companies. There was also a clay mockup of a version of the current RoadKing Classic with the iconic BMW boxer motor, which is promised for fall introduction. FOR RELEASE AFTER MARCH 31, 2011

I have a friend who rides a BMW 1200 , he is interested in buying something ( should be a Venture) that he can use or add to his BMW so we can communicate, Would be great it there was something he could use so we could talk on the CB other than him having to install a CB on his bike. any suggestions? or is there an inexpensive CB that would work somehow

Been looking at Goldwings and and the BMW K 1200 LT. Scratching my head. Don't know which one I like the most. My 08 RSV is sittin in the parking lot at work with a bad ignition switch. Waiting till Monday morning, then gonna load it on the trailer and take it to the Yamaha/Honda dealer to get it fixed. Also, needs the fuel level indicator fixed. Took the rear wheel off to grease the splines and noticed the rear shock has about a half inch or more of up and down play in it. Meaning, I can lift the swingarm up about a half inch, like something ain't right. Might be normal, I don't know. Gonna get them to check that, too. I'm not really that unhappy with the RSV, I just think there might be something a little bit better. I ride year round, and while I'm pulling out the choke lever, cranking up and warming up the engine, my buddy hops on his fuel injected Goldwing and rides away. Also, with factory heated grips and seat. I know some of ya have gone to Goldwings and like them. I had one in the early 80's and liked that one. I know they've changed a lot. What do ya think about the BMW K 1200 LT? Know where there's one at a reasonable price. Also, didn't say I was going to quit the web site. If Eck can ride a Goldwing to meet and eats, surely I can too (He, He). Besides, my best friend and cousin-in-law ride an RSV. Anyway, I value ya's opinion. Whatdoyouthink?

How many, like myself, have gone fron the 1st gen to BMW LT ?

My 86 burned a valve and runs like crap. I can get 92 for $2500 with 80K miles on it, plus I have LOTS of great parts from the 86. OR, I can get a fully optioned 2001 BMW K1200LT with 39k miles and new service and tires for $7500. What do you think? Keep in mind I don't have as much time to work on them like I used to. I like the Venture looks and power. I like the BMW fuel injection and adjustable windshield. Moma like the BMW heated seats, but the lower price of the Venture. If I look at it in a 5 year term, the BMW seems the correct choice.

I have been cruising the BMW forums and notice they swear by the Metzler 880 for the K1200LT touring bike. Oh yeah they complain about the same stuff we do...like top heavy, slow speed handling and a whole other set of problems I know there is several members here that has not had good luck with the Metzler 880 on the 2nd Gen Venture. Seems they have a tendency to chunk rubber off at some point. Some members here love them and would not use nothing else even when they hear of others problems. I am kinda scared of them since more than one of our members report the chunking problem. I always thought maybe it was the weight of the bike causing some of this problem...but the BMWK1200LT is not that much different from the Venture. Running weight of the BMW is 853lbs. RSV 869lbs Is it the horsepower...Venture about 98hp-BWM 116hp. Why is it the BWM folks never seem to have problems with this tire? Any ideas? Also my son's 2010 Raider (730lb bike) has a set of Metzler 880 on from the factory...and in the owners manual they strickly recommend nothing but this tire. 120/70-21 210/40-18 Metzler 880. By the way...that 113 ci Raider is one of the most uncomfortable bikes I have ever riden...feet and arms out front...back bent over, you would never touch a back rest if you installed one...you look like a C riding it. But it will get up and go...but I do not think there is a chance it will out run BLACK BETTY even if it is BLACK, the fastest color of them all. I tell you what...that new BMW K1600GTL sound like it is gonna be something to consider. 160 HP in line 6 cylinder with 129lb/ft torque...heck who knows...you might even be able to see the engine on it... Spy photo...of what is supposed to be it.. Yamaha better tighten thier A$$ up...I just hope it comes in BLACK when it hits the street. Looks like a FJR with a Big tour pack on it. Probably runs like or better than a FJR. http://www.cycleworld.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/motorcycle_news/future_bikes_spy_shots/10q3/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots/3472375-1-eng-US/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots_image_575_346.jpg http://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle_news/future_bikes_spy_shots/10q3/bmw_k1600gt_and_gtl_-_future_bikes_spy_shots

If this has been posted before, I do apologize. I thought this was a pretty cool video but think it would be better if a Second Gen did it!!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8NzQXS0D1U]YouTube- Oldest Trick Of The World - New -- BMW[/ame]

Just read about the new concept from BMW. Looks like they are going to introduce a inline6 with the first version to be a tourer. Wonder how Yamaha is going to react to this one, with Honda going to introduce a new wing as well? Not sure that the V4 in the present state will fly, even with a detuned V-Max. The Strat platform just does not seem to make sense, unless they are trying to recoup investment. mavericksix

For all those interested, BMW in Greer SC is hiring 700 people at $13-$14/hr. They are saying manufacturing experience a plus. The job fair held today showed 600 folks. If you're interested go here: http://www.mau.com/pressroom/ not quite the right page, but you can take it from there. Good luck.

I have found a 1999 K 1200 Lt BMW with 15000 miles in great shape. Has anyone ever owned one of these and can you tell me if they are good and dependable bikes. I can buy it for $7000.00.

It was a beautiful last week on the parkway.I saw a White Venture and a white RSTD in Va.near Fancy Gap. What really shocked we were the amount of BMWs on the parkway last week.I usually see an inordinate amount of Goldwings and Ultra classic but it seemed every other bike was a BMW last week. Was there a rally or is everyone trading in their rides on a BMW?
