I've had a few people wonder why I got back into biking some years back when money was and still is so tight these days. My career took a major hit 20 years ago and another one 10 years ago, so we have had to watch every penny, especially since my wife finally had to retire. I work at a crappy, frustrating job (commission only) that pays $12,000 in a good year and about $4,000 to $5,000 in a poor year (One good year in the past 7 - mostly poor to fair for the rest) with not too much available in retirement funds. At 64 years of age I can only hope to retire by the time I hit 75 - if I'm lucky. Now, as has been pointed out to me - I could sell a couple of bikes and a car (Only need one car if I don't work) and with the insurance and maintenance savings and selling the house, I could retire now - and sit at home watching TV all day! No thanks! I enjoy riding - the bikes, the open air, the people - everything! The house will hopefully be sold this year (It's bigger than we need, but the market is crap for this one around here) but I'll keep the job. Why? Well, as I've told others, I want to live not just survive. The day will come soon enough when all we can do is sit and watch. I'd like to try and enjoy life with my wife while we still can. We have had some tough times and made a lot of sacrifices to make sure that our girls had a good education (They each have a University degree and a college diploma) so that they wouldn't get nailed like us. Now we want to enjoy life as much as we can. So why this story now? My neighbour Ben, a good old fashioned Italian gentleman turned 75 this year. He was still working at his job (Low stress - selling men's clothing in a high end shop) and trying to save up for a better retirement after he and his wife put their two girls through school. Well, I found out yesterday that Ben has been diagnosed with Leukemia - this after having heart problems for the past 12 years. I've always tried to help out (Clean out their driveway every winter since he can't and paying to have it done gets expensive in a bad winter.) but there's not much I can do to help him now, except be there for him. So ... I continue to not put off having some fun with my wife (Awww come on - get your minds out of the gutter!) on the bike and enjoying life as best we can. I'm not a spiritual or religious person, but Ben is and I'm sure he would appreciate knowing others were praying for him. So you're welcome to send a few his way. He may not be a biker, but he is "good people" and deserves a break. Thanks, Andy

My co-worker and friend and brother in the Lord, Philip Howard, is need of prayer for his family. His son Ben Howard (20 yrs old) wrecked his four wheeler ATV yesterday afternoon and had to be flown to the UK hospital in Lexington,KY. He is in critical shape and may be paralyzed from his chest down. He is to be operated on tomorrow. The young man is a good Christian boy and that is very good. He is in need of prayer and please remember his family also. This is very devastating news to me and all those I work with. We are a close nit group that work together at the State Highway Department. We spend many hours working together and watching out for one another as we do a dangerous job, especially through the winter months. Please remember us all in prayer as we all pray for Ben and his family. Fuzzy

While in Alabama this last weekend, we went to eat at Logan's while Jacque was working there at lunch. We wanted to be sure to give her a hard time, but she still served us with a smile! Eck and Konnie joined us along with Ben and Brock! What a great lunch we had! Dessert was great too! Even ran into a girl I used to work with in Huntsville!

I know you didn't miss me but I'm finally back. I rejoined several months ago but apparently did something wrong. I was so busy at work and travelling that I failed to follow up. I've been in Florida working August and until the end of Sept. Seems I'm missing some real nice riding weather back in Va. Is this true Ben? Are you back yet Ben? Did I miss anything major? BTW. You Florida people can keep this weather. I'm not on my bike and I miss it terribly. Even the dogs I'm training are starting to revolt due to the heat and these dogs will be going to Afghanistan soon.

Thank you Ben for all the help and work you did for me yesterday. Ben wired my bike up to pull my new trailer as well as installed some good looking Chrome Platinum Burners (from Walmart) as passing lights. We spent the whole day together working on the bike. Ben is very much a perfectionist and routed the all the wires professionally. Now when I say we spent all day working on the bike, I actually mean Ben did the work on the bike. I was his, not so helpful, go-for guy. I would like to say I learned alot, but the wiring was very confusing and I know I still would not be able to do the job. But I now know how to take off my gas tank. Ben thank you very much for all you did, and I look forward to getting out for a ride with you soon. Dave

Does anyone know if he is still selling the hitches? I inquired online on Tuesday and haven't heard back from him. Ben

Does anyone have a roar in their rear tire? I've had my 04 RSV for 2 weeks now, only 8K miles so they are the original tires. Maybe it's just me, but I think the roar is a little much for a motorcycle. No complaints at all, it just seems weird to me. Ben

What would you do if you had one day, one week, or one month to live? This is the premise of the movie One Week starring Joshua Jackson as Ben Tyler. I saw this movie tonight with my younger brother Sean. This is a great biker movie highlighting some of the best scenery from Toronto to the west coast of Vancouver Island. In the movie Ben has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of the blood, lymphatic system and liver. Given the news that he will only survive a couple years at most, Ben goes on a journey to discover himself and how he fits into the relationship with his fiance. What makes the movie special is the journey is taken on an old 850 Norton Commando. Leaving Toronto, Ben heads north up through Sudbury along the northern shore of Lake Superior and then onto Thunderbay. Ben crosses through to Manitoba where he has an accidental encounter with the Stanley Cup. Through the prairies and bad lands of Saskatchewan and Southern Alberta Ben meets interesting people along the way who help him in his search. Without giving too much of the movie away Ben ends his journey in Tofino on Vancouver Island then returns home. This movie is not light at heart like Wild Hogs (a great biker movie in and of itself), but is a movie of much deeper meaning and reflection. For myself this movie has a lot of personal significance. I was choked up through most of the movie. Like Ben I have been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the blood, lymphatic system, and liver. My cancer actually started in the colon which has been removed. I too have only been given a couple of years to live and am in search of meaning for my remaining days here on earth. I have visited most of the places Ben travelled but not on a bike. I have always said I wanted to ride to the west coast – and now I have even more inspiration to make it happen. In my opinion this is a great biker movie. Being a proud Canadian I am proud this is a very good Canadian production featuring Canadian actors and some of the best Canadian scenes you would ever see from the saddle of a bike. If you get a chance go see the movie. And think about it, what would you do if you were given one day, one week, or one month to live?
