Yesterday morning I dropped my Nankang Rear Tire & RSV wheel off at the dealer to get it mounted. At 4:00pm they said they couldn't get it to bead & wanted to try more tomorrow. At 10am this morning they called & said that they even took it over to a car tire place to try to get it seated & failed. So then I called 6 different places just to see if they would even try to bead/seat the tire. None would try. That was disappointing. So I set off to do it myself - bought tire irons & 2 hp air compressor from Harbour Freight - bought silicon spray, grease & dawn dish liquid. Then I broke the seat on the side that wouldn't bead - greased & soaped the rim & tire... tried to set the bead once - failed - broke the bead - tire ironed the spot that stuck - tried to set second time - failed - did the same as before third time same forth time - beaded & seated - done It took about 45 minutes of messing with & it popped at about 65 psi. The dealer then balanced the tire for free. Why is nothing ever easy for me. At least now I have a nice 8 gallon 2hp oil air compressor for other things. Tire irons are nice hunks of metal for prying & banging on things when your frustrated. What happened to the old time bike shops? The last time I had a car tire mounted, HummingBird kindly did it for me. Thanks & too bad HB is so far away in Ohio! JohnB

Anyone know how I would cut the long tail part the bead seat.

Well I decided to go to the darkside. Found that Discount Tire had to order the tire. When it came in their machines could not install on the MC rim. I took it to a MC shop and they mounted ok but could not get it to seat. Took it to Les Schwab (closest to house) and they tried a dozen time to get it to seat with no luck. They tried so much that it started to tear the rubber at the bead. What do I do now. Tire still on the rim but not seated. Do I return the tire (if I could), try to lube up the bead with petrolium jelly (figures less harmfull to the tire) or do I just have to go to a MC tire. Thanks for the help Wayde:bawling:

Is the Bead Seat cuttable. If so is there a special way so not to unravel it.

Looking for how others tied their bead seats on. Looking for a sturdy, ok lookiing and a quick way to get them off and on.

Does anyone know a good place / website to get one of those wooden bead seat covers for a bike seat at a good price. I want to get two but hate the idea of dropping $50 to $60 not knowing weather or not I'll like them. There was a place on ebay selling them for 12 buck but looks like there out.

What are some good ways to stop a pesky bead leak? It would be nice if I could do it without having to take the wheel off the bike. If I end up having to take it off, and I'm able to break the bead free from the rim, I just clean up the bead area and apply some bead sealer. I keep looking at the green stuff and the like that get put into the tires to seal leaks. But they appear to be intended for the tread area and not for bead leaks. Any ideas? Bill

It's done, and it was a job. My trip to Texas Hill Country resulted in a hole in the rear tire. Plugged it (twice) and got it home. I ordered a new tire and this weekend I decided to get it mounted. The tire & wheel came off the bike easy, as usual. My new super-duper tire-iron is really nice and the first bead came off without too much trouble. However, the second bead decide to be difficult. I called my neighbor for help and we still struggled for over 30 minutes! If my next tire change is this much trouble, I am buying one of those Harbor Freight tire changers . . .

Will a large C clamp work for a bead breaker for the front tire? I don't have a truck bumper to jack against like was suggested in another thread. RR

Purchased a Kumho Powerstar and then it began........ Tire shop couldn't fit my rear rim on their machine! Friend drove tire down to bike shop [doing favour for tire shop] Back to tire shop to inflate correctly. Back to bike shop to balance tire on their machine -- discover that tire isn't on rim properly! Bike shop said leave it with them and they will try [inbetween other servicing] to get it to bead correctly. Tire there for two days, but can't get it to bead!! So now I have asked Quickstep if he can take it to work and see if the truvk tire fitter can bead it on with his more powerful machine. Just hope all this hasn't distorted the tire????

I'm going to try to change the front tire myself on my 86VR....40 years ago I used to work part time at Sears changing tires so I'm no stranger to the process.. Has anyone used a "C" clamp to break the bead and large screwdrivers to remove the tire from the rim?..It seems easy at face value but I'd like to hear from people that have actually done it... BTW: I figured diluted liquid soap and a paint brush ought to work when replacing the tire to get the bead slippery enough to fit the tire, with a little persuasion, over the rim...

Guys don't try the classic radial, the bead breaks before the tire will seat, I blew one at 85 lbs, and another biker trying to mount one on a magna rear wheel said his blew at 85 lbs. That make the third one that the bead broke. Gregg

Still wrenchin' on the '91
Condor posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pulled the covers off the '91 to get to the #4 carb and it's non--reactive diaphragm assembly to see why it's not working. Sad to say I pulled out what looked to be a brand new diaphragm, and whoever installed the thing didn't make sure the lip bead was seated in the groove properly and crushed the bead when they screwed down the cover, and then left it that way. It's been sitting in there for lord knows how long and the lip has been deformed to the point where it will no longer seal. I did pull out a used one that had a half dozen micro holes in it, gave it a shot of Plasti--Dip, and got the slide to start working, but not good enough to match the movement of the other 3. So, I trying to get this bike preped for Cody in two weeks, and I need one good assembly with no holes....fast. Anyone have a good used spare I could buy and they could priority mail it to me?? -

I've always had a bear of a time breaking the bead when I change my Venture's tires. The front is always worse. I see that J.C. Whitney has a bead breaker, but it says that it won't work on street/sport tires http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2004056/c-10111/Nty-1/p-2004056/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10111/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=bead+breaker Has anybody tried this? How do others break beads? BTW, the lowest price I've found so far for Avons is J.C. Whitney's! Frank

Hello all, I did it I did it I just went to the darkside today. The tire I have on the back of my RSV is a federal tire. It took 75psi to set one bead and 80 psi to set the other bead. I have set the initial tire pressure at 44psi and will drop down to 40 psi at 400 miles on the tire. I plan on having 600 to 800 miles before i go to Rolling Thunder in MAY. I have read and did a lot of research in this matter and I think I am going the right direction for me and my ride. I did add a picture of the lip that the tire has to go over pictures are included. Have a great day of riding Bryan Lay

The front tire pressure has been dropping about 30 lbs in a week. I pulled off the wheel today and there was no obvious damage. I sprayed a soapy mixture around the rim and there is bubbling around a good portion of the bead area on both sides. When this tire was installed about 2000 miles ago there was no leaks. The last few weeks it began to leak. Yes, there is Ride-On sealent in there too. Prior to installing the tire I had cleaned the inside of the front and rear rims of all the old gunked up Ride-On in there. The rims had a nice clean surface especially the bead area. Rear wheel is fine. Any ideas here? I filled the tire to 80 lbs in the hopes it would seat better but its still leaking. Another thought came to me. Since the tire is narrower than the 150, do you think its possible that the 130 is just a poor fit? I know another member who is having the same issues and hes running a 130 also.

Argh. Got the new Avon from Southwest Moto Tire (great price, fast delivery, fresh stock... just no way to phone them)... Front Avon Venom-X AM41 MT90B16 74H Now the shop can't mount it. It's more than 1" narrower. they can't get it spread enough at the bead to have it seat. Was there other, wider, rims available for an 00 RSV? Mine look like everyone else's I have seen. thanks
