has anyone done this. Was thinking maybe going to a lighter bike. Just pulling a trailer behind me. Is there a windshield for this bike and a hitch. Been seeing them for around 4 to 5 thousand for a 2005 model. Looks like there 300lb lighter. So by the time I sit on it will weigh about the same as a venture. What do you all think, am I crazy. Will this bike last as long. Don't look like you could put soft bags on it. Pros and cons please

Good afternoon. I've googled a bit and looked around some on this site and have a quick question. Just picked up an 84 Venture and am trying to take the saddle bags off. There's a key toward the back and it does rotate freely. What do you do after you turn the key to remove the bags? I've pulled back, pushed forward and pulled straight out. I'm wondering if the key itself is actually doing anything, almost too easy for a 30 yr old lock. TIA

Hi, My '84 has some places (where the P.O. had some stickers that I have removed) where the silhouette of old stickers is still evident. The paint hasn't faded the same where the stickers had been, as on the rest of the bike. The paint looks newer and shinier where the stickers had been. Also, the top surfaces of my side bags are quite faded, the worst areas on the bike. The sticker spots are on the vertical surfaces of the side bags. Seems to me that some polishing or buffing compound might be called for, but I have no experience in this realm. What do the venturerider experts recommend in such cases? Thanks, Brian H.

When I get frisky and decide to do a good detail on my bike I take off the seats and saddle bags. The problem is with the saddle bags off the bike it's hard to keep the saddle bags stable enough to clean them. Anyone have any suggestions. I thought about maybe building a rack I could put them in while cleaning.

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment f or future generations." She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truely recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.

Decided to fix it myself, and pocket the change! I think the ol' rattlecan job looks pretty ok. The bugs wash off better than I expected, too. Next is the trunk and bags. Just a little ratty. Not the whole bike. By the way, I love my new F4 Customs X tall X wide. The vent in front is truly perfect.

Hey all, hope I posted this in the right place... I've got a 2 week cruise coming up in September and I ordered the stock Yamaha luggage rack for my 08 RSTD, looking to mount a sissy bar bag for some extra storage. I'm mainly looking to move the odds-n-ends I carry in my bags to the rack - you know shield cleaner, rain suit, gloves, etc... I've been looking at VikingBags, Tourmaster, Saddleman (and others) and they all have decent-looking bags, but the stock rack isn't flat - it's straight for about 6 in. then it angles up for maybe 3 in. more. So the bags with hard, flat bottoms won't sit flush on the rack. I'm wondering if a round bag such as the Tourmaster Select Sissy Bar bag would work better. And some of these bags don't seem to have much options regarding mounting. So question is: anybody got a recommendation on a good bag for mounting on an 08 RSTD stock luggage rack? Be nice if it was big enough to hold an XXL full face helmet as well as the odds-n-ends listed above, but not Wingebago size.

Just delivered my Venture to the bike shop in Atlantic Iowa to be fitted with a Hannigan Trike kit. They will take it to the Hannigan plant in Kentucky for the installation, being the week of July 9 to July 14. First, they'll send them one of the saddle bags to use for a color match. I'll have an updated report on the results next month. Yeah, just calm down, huh! Owen.

Does anyone know of, or have seen anywhere a larger version of the hard saddlebags for the RSTD ? What I want (ha ha ha) is to have my '06 RSMTD bags be taller, or higher. The width, length, etc. is fine, but IMHO these bags are too small. I am used to much larger saddlebags, and a tour trunk. Since I have a bike that did not come with a tour trunk, and...I have removed the rear seat and passenger backrest to make my bike a solo ride...I have a need for much larger saddlebags. As for the idea from some of you that I could install a rear rack, and put a tour trunk on that...I already have a rear fender rack, in place of where the rear seat was...and bolted to that is a newer aluminum rack, and bolted to that is a Saddleman Leather trunk that is used to house my Aux. Fuel Tank (another 5 gallons). So there is no room for an additional trunk in that area. If I cannot find a suitable aftermarket saddlebag that fits nicely in place of where my original OEM hard bags are (and I do have the yamaha chrome rails that go around the saddlbags), then...my choice would be to either have a plastics manufacturer alter my current bags to be about 4 inches taller...simply the slice and paste method, which would still allow me to utilize all the OEM mounting system, the OEM lids and locking systems. All I would be doing is extending the height of the current bags, to raise the top of the lids up to the level of the rear fender. That would give me approximately 42.395 % more storage space (I did say it was approximate). Or...failing that...I could find a good leather saddlebag maker to make me a complete set of new saddlebags, hard formed...that would be of the perfect size, and that would be close to looks to match the bike. If they are hard formed enough, they would be as good as the OEM bags, only larger. So...all you longtime searchers, have you heard of or seen any larger saddlebags that will fit the RSTD ? If not...and if I have my current ones remade my a plastics (ABS) manufacturer into what I have described above (with pictures to follow), would anyone else be interested in having this done too? Thanks,

Anybody have a lead on where a guy might find replacements for the hard bags on my '96 RS TD? Had someone rear-end me at a red light, destroyed one and scratched up the other. Really I could get by with just the new lid for the left one...

Hey.. how do I remove the bags from an 83 without the key ? The bags are open, but seem to be locked on the bike. I need to get the bags off so I can remove a hitch from one of my part bikes. I don't want to damage the bags. Do I drill off the locks inside ?

Am going to put a set of RK mufflers on my 06 RSTD. I realize it would definitely, probably, maybe, be easier to pull the bags off to replace them. Question is, , ,it is that much easier, , , , , , worth all the trouble pulling and replacing the bags. . . . . ..

Hey fellow riders, I have a brand new to me 2007 Midnight Venture, only back and forth to work and quick trips so far, just filled up for the first time since I brought it home full. Mostly pleased so far, its a giant compared to any other Ive owned. We are gonna put about 500 miles on it this weekend and Ive never had so much storage. No camping, just 3 days of ride time, friends house etc. So whats in your bags? I havent really got anything organized in there, but have the stock tool kit- unlooked at yet, jackets, chaps, gloves, snacks, water, cleaning stuff, the highway pegs that just got here, uuhmmm- thats about it;)

Got a set of rear speakers mounted into the saddle bags of the scooter this week. I found a set of computer speakers that had a interesting shape to them at a local electronics recycler. I don't know what they came from. I hooked them up to stereo in garage before hand and they sound pretty good. Mounted into front of saddlebags with a thin piece of a baggie over them to water proof. I know that won't help sound, but it will give me an overall better volume on bike. I have an aftermarket radio with front & rear volume controls. Gary

I have a 98 Royal Star that I have almost completely turned into a tour deluxe. The last thing on my list are saddle bags, as I have all of the brackets and exhaust installed. The problem I am having is finding factory bags without spending a fortune! Is there somewhere besides eBay that I can source them? Also, I use to have a road king classic and I really kind of Liked those bags. Believe it or not, I can buy a pair of those for half the Yamaha factory bags. Has anyone done this, and if so is there a write up and pictures?

Of the little guys that hold these bags to the trunk? I just won these of ebay to put on my 84. I put the MKII trunk on my MKI about 1.5 years ago so I have the clips that hold the bags onto one side, and I took the intercom controls off the other side. So I need a couple clips to put the second bag on that side. Thanks Bill

I am adding a HD aftermarket trunk to my Tour Deluxe and want to paint it to match, or at least look like a match at 50 mph. There are rattle can kits for both colors, blue and black, on the internet that I think I will try. I could do the easy thing and paint the lid blue and the base black. Or, tape off and look to catch a similar angle to the saddle bags. There is a stripe on the bags where the blue and the black meet. Is this a decal? Or is this painted? If some sort of decal / tape, is this available?
