Ok. I bought a 1999 Venture a few weeks ago. I know the last guy that had it let it sit for about 3 years. He also apparently tried to do some exhaust mods to the stock exhaust and totally butchered it. The bike runs pretty good so I thought I would take it into the local shop and have the carbs cleaned and synced. They did but it still backfired a lot. They said it was the bastardized exhaust causing the issue. So I bought some LA Custom slip-ons. I just put them on and it did not fix anything. Sounds louder and good but still backfiring. This all happens with little to no load on the engine. I also note that if I am in 3rd or 4th gear and cruising along and decide to speed up a little, it tends to bog. I told the local shop this and they said I need to rejet. I'm very new to Yamaha and know very little about their engine setup. It is just plain embarrassing to ride like this. I've hear different things about some circuit that is supposed to open something up during decel, low load, etc. to let more air in or something. What do you guys think? I know somebody has the answer and I'm not quite sure that the garage has the answer. I already spent money on a new exhaust that they said would fix it. I'm running out of money. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have not replaced the plugs yet. Thank you.

Greetings, I am at an end. I do not know what is wrong with my motorcycle. I have a 2006 RSTD with 8500 miles, and a few months ago I noticed a little backfiring when riding (mainly coming out of the right muffler.) It progressively got worse. I decided to change the plugs and noticed that the rear right cylinder plug was fouled (completely black.) I changed all the plugs, the problem persisted. In fact, after just a 20 min ride it fouled the new plug on the Right Rear Cylinder. My local dealer suggested to run some Techron through the bike, did not help. Also, there is a strong gas smell when running the bike. I checked the plugs and they are getting fire. I read on the forum that it might be my carbs, I bought a Carbtune 2 and synced the carbs (they were not even off that much.) No Change. A friend suggested to change the plug wire, but I quickly found out the plug wire is molded to the coil. I am not a mechanic, but I have done minor repair and maintenance on my bikes through the years. I am at a total loss. The owners manuel says that a black plug means a defective engine (I sure hope this is not the case.) Your help would be much appreciated. God Bless, Matt Powell My bike needs a good doctor

Ok folks I have been chasing my tail on this one and quite frankly I am done so I need some assistance from folks alot smarter than me. Last spring I started having issues with my 89 VR backfiring on decel. A new collector from Mark (Mark's Pipes) and an awesome new/used set of stock mufflers from Earl (Skydoc) solved the backfiring on decel. However, in fixing that issue I seemed to have created another problem. Cold start the bike fires right up and after some initial cold engine sputtering and backfiring through the carbs it purrs right along at the set idle speed (1000 rpm on stock tach). However, once warmed up and if let sit more than a minute it is a bear to get restarted. I have done the following: 1) Sprayed non-chlorinated cleaner into the top side of the carbs with the diaphragm covers/air cleaner on and off. Focusing on all openings and accessible jets 2) Ran 6 to 12 oz Seafoam religiously for over a year 3) Drained fuel bowls and checked for gunk suspended in fual (found none) 4) Pumped straight Seafoam into carbs while running and let sit two days. Performed this twice as I wanted to make sure I did it right (resultant smoke cloud on restart killed all mosquitos within two miles and fire department has put me on their "watch list" ) 5) Changed and regapped plugs after each Seafoam treatment 6) Cleaned all electrical connections and retightened where necessary 7) Battery has been tested numerous times and is pushing more than enough amperage 8) Plug wires and diaphragms are less than 2 years old 9) TCI and coils are all stock (40,800 miles) At this point I am looking for any other suggestions. I will be attending the SE Texas Maint Weekend so maybe I can get some good pointers there as well. Thanks

Today for the first time my bike started backfiring on deceleration...these were not the usual rumbling or small pops I normally heard when coming down a mountain road but rather loud backfires..It did it both in 3rd and 4th gear at about 4000rpm decelerating to 3000 rpm..I thought it might be due to altitude but it did it at lower elevations also... I did the needle modification to lean out the bike, could that be causing it? All else is good..starts and runs fine..alls good except the backfiring..

Hey guys, I know some of you own multiple types of bikes and was wondering if you could give me a hand. I have been working on my girlfriends 04 883 Sportster and it's about to drive me nuts. It has been backfiring through the carb. I adjusted the mixture screw to richen it up and that didn't help. I upped the slow jet one size bigger and played with the mixture now it's running more on the rich side. But it still backfires thru the carb. Carb backfire is usually a sign of lean but it does it running rich as well. Really don't want to take it to the dealership. Wallet is already on the light side as it is. Any help you might could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all. I have a 2007 Venture and wanted to ask a question: I've had the carbs synced 2 times in 9,000 miles. Both times they were synced, I start getting a backfire out of the right side exhaust when decelerating (in gear). Never the left side, always the right. The bike hasn't backfired since I ran a bottle of Seafoam in it earlier this summer. Had my 8,000 mile service done today. On the way home, it's backfiring again! What are your thoughts? It's not bad, but I prefer it not to backfire. I had the dealer service dept. look for an exhaust leak the last time. I've tried to find one as well, but there just doesn't appear to be a leak. Is this something any of you have experienced? Thanks....

Ok...I'm fairly new to working on a bike and I am trying to learn all I can. In this learning experience I heard that the AIS can cause popping and backfiring, which I have. Initally I disregarded it as I planned on plugging it. But after a little further inspection I have noticed that it only occurs on the right side (at least when on the side stand). I found this out by reving the engine and letting off quickly, which in turn causes the backfire, and as soon as I let off, I glance at the pipes to see which one it is occuring with. With that said, would it still be the AIS (as I haven't plugged it yet) or could I have a leak somewhere on the right side. Bear in mind, I haven't put it on a jack to level it yet, I am just fishing for what to possibly look for. And for a little history on the bike, from my understanding it had sat for quite a while when it was trying to be sold and I am not to sure how ofter it was ran during that time. I know not enough for the battery because it was bad. But it does have a fresh tank of gas...

Quick Question, maybe
matt73ander posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just got an 83 venture yesterday. so far after buring up the gas that was in and filling with 91 octane i got about 115 miles on this tank and the fuel is at the last bar. Its been missing and backfiring a little so i'm assume the carbs need a good cleaning and make sure they are all in sync. real question is about how far should you be able to get on a tank.- 16 replies
