I went for a ride yesterday with some friends and one was on a Tour Deluxe. He knew that his tire was worn to the wear bars and already had a new set to install but we thought he would be OK to ride yesterday since we were not going that far, maybe 150 miles, and we wouldn't be on any high speed highways. Apparently Avon puts the wear bars right on top of the cords. About 20 miles from home the tire went flat. Wasn't a big deal. He just pulled into a driveway and waited while we rode on home to get the trailer. Attached is a photo of the tire. As you rotate the tire all the way around there are alternating patches of rubber and bare cords. Just thankful we were close to home. So be aware that with Avons there is no margin of safety once you are down to the bars. It was also interesting that he had sevaral Harley riders stop to check on him while he was parked. A couple were ladies who stopped to console him for about 15 minutes. Dennis

Ya!! When they throw Dirt in my face!! No..I`m installing a new set of Avons on the bike, running a E3 on the front now, but it is so cupped that it has to go, but I do have around 15k on it... The C/T on the rear is going as well, figure I have pressed my luck long enough..got around 35k on it and still has alot of tread left, maybe it will fit my trailer...I ran Avons on it right after I got the bike and really liked them, so think I`m gonna stick with them, Born on date of the front is 1711 and the rear is in `10 so should be good to go.. Just hope it rains and cools down like they are talking about, and having the AC fixxed in the house would be a plus also... K

Just got home and saw that my new tires had arrived. I went with the Avons again. There was a recent comment the the problem with the sidewalls cracking has been resolved. That may be true but the dates on these tires are 0610 for the front and 4310 for the rear so any changes were likely made after these were produced. I was a little disappointed in that these were made last year. I'm replacing two Avons that still have a lot of tread the the sidewalls are all cracked. I'm going to mount these but if I have the cracking issue again, Avon and I are going to have a little chat.

Ok so let start this by saying. "Thanks to everyone that has commented on Avon tires that cracked":happy34: I've had Avons since 2005 (except for the emergency replacement). I would like to hear from members that have gotten Avon tires with-in the past year and had good tires. I love my Avons but am a little concerned about the recent cracking problems that a few riders have commented on. I almost ordered some E-3's but then decided to start this thread and wait till Monday to do the ordering.

after all the other tire threads but... I keep reading that Avons are great but you get some bounce or wobble or some other adverse affect around 85MPH and up. True or Not? I have Commanders now and they have been great (smooth as glass up to 100). Needing to replace the front at 18,500. my last rear went 12k. You guys are spooking me off of Avons with this wobble talk - I routinely hit 85 and frequently above it - and I like everything to stay nice and steady. (Sorry to start this again, I went back and dug through the other threads and cant really find much definitive)

I've been running Avon Venoms for the last 3-4 years on the '83VR and they were great when it comes to handling. It's just the sidewall cracking issue that bothered me. No complaint about Avon's replacement policy. Anyway, because of some good feedback on this board, I decided to put a set of Elite III's on the '99RSV. I'm still running Avons on the '91VR, but figured the '99 will be a long range tourer, and I don't want to deal with possible cracking while out in the boonies. Besides all of the 1stGens I own, for the most part, came with EII's, and.. IMO... are as tough as nails. If the EIII's give the same results I'll be a happy camper. The EIII's also have a tread pattern that's very similar to the Venoms. So I went ahead and picked up the EIII's from Jake Wilson online. Another set of Venoms, with their $50 buck rebate would have been cheaper by $20 bucks. The EIII's ran $221 on my doorstep, and the Venoms would have run me $240. Have I ever mentioned how much I dislike rebates....

Well I got my wheels back and I need to make a decision to put new tires on or put the others back on and finish wearing them out. I Currently have the Avons on but Im curious about the Elites. How do the elites handle vs the Avons. Who has both and compare them. Now important part. I dont want hear about cracking or customer service. I dont care about Michelins or Metzlers. I just want to know how they handle Vs each other. I want to buy them this week if I decide to get them so have at it!

dunlope elite 3 front size?
Guest posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
i am getting new tires, and wanted to just be 100% sure before i pull the trigger, that MR90H-18 are infact the same as 120/90-18? also, is the MU90HT-16 the right rear? i've had dunlops and avons before, and i think i am going to try out the e3's on both front and back, assuming that is the right size. thanks in advance, guys! -
Anybody have any experience with this tire. Not asking if this is the best only asking if anyone has any experience with this tire. I already know about Avon's and Dunlop E3's but know nothing about this tire.

This is probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway... Approx. 7k ago, I replaced my stock tires with Avons. Everything has gone okay until lately. They started making noise on the lean. So I checked them and I think they are cupping. I have kept 41ish pounds in them, per the service manual. I almost always ride two-up. Now tonight I hopped on it and it feels weird up to about 30 to 40mph. Almost sluggish with the turns, I thought I had a low tire, so I checked it again, this time with 2 different tire guages. They both read 40ish psi. What are the chances of these Avons needing a different tire pressure than the book says? I'd swear that the tire looks like it has been run quite a while with low pressure - which as I said above, I always keep at 40ish psi. craigr

I'm ready for tires, and extremely hesitant about downsizing my front tire, mainly because I can't get a single mechanic or shop to say that it will fit my rim. I know many here have done it with the Avons, but does anyone have the 130-90-16 Dunlop E-3 on the front of their RSV with the stock rim? Any issues whatsoever?

We had a Metzler 880 marathon come apart on a run yesterday and thank goodness we were only doing 45mph at the time. The tire shop was only a couple miles away and when we got to the shop there were 2 guys there who had there Metzler's come apart also. the date of manufacture on there tires was 08 with less the 5k miles and the guy in our group his date was 07 with a little over 6k on his tire. I like my AVON'S and think I will stick with them. The Dunlap 2's were great on my 1st Gen and I loved how they handled. But on this 2nd Gen I will stick with AVON'S. If your running Metzler's be careful and check them often. We have Bikefest 08 going on out here now and bikes are everyware.................................................Ron

I would like to get some input from our members as it is almost time to replace the tires on my 07 venture. The originals are on it. Dunlop D404's. I have 13000 miles on them now and will likely get another 1000 or so. This is my second bike. The V star I had before this had Dunlops D404's on it as well so I dont really have anything to compare to. I have read a number of threads and it seems that alot of members like the Avons. I also read that there are different types of Avon's that should be considered. So here are my questions. What are the advantages of the Avons over the Dunlops? Do the Avons tend to get more treadwear than the Dunlops? Which Avon is the best one to consider? Are there any other tire brands I should be considering? Where is a good place on line to purchase? Thanks in advance for your input. Jim

Just got the V Star 1300 back with the new Avons on, and man what a difference, the bike felt like it was 200 lbs lighter, felt like the venture with Avons on it, just think about turning and it goes.......really good feel to it. Cant wait to get it out for a long ride..........

I Have about 9000 mils on my Avons by now, and they look little flat on center. Preparing to go to Ashville, I dont want to take last mile out of tire. Can somebody tell me where are those wearing marks on tire. Thanks.

Guess everyone has their day, so mine was today. Was on my way to the dealers to arrange for new skins, that was after new Avons yesterday. So it was, that somehow, somewhere, somebody misattached the saddle bag to the side of the scoot and off she came at 120, that about the speed that floppy happens with the Avons, so now it's Elete II for a try. Tried for Elite III but they don't seem to be available so that's it, new tyres and now we need a new saddle bag, right side , outside only, brown. Any one have one to sell, I'd be interested. Carl

Just thought some folks might be interested in our progress on this situation. Carl and I had over the winter Avon Venoms installed on our scoots. He had the rear replaced and I had both front and rear. Both of us experienced a wobble at speeds over 110 Kms/hr or 75 Mph. The wobble gets worse as the speed increases. Carl talked to the people at Avon and they indicated that they wanted to resolve the issue and would pick up the costs. We have been to the shop that installed the tires and he also wanted to resolve the issue and is willing to do what it takes. I've had the Avons replaced with another set of Avons (one at a time) without success. Same problem. Now I have a set of Metzlers on and the problem is GONE. I know I'm going to get some flack because I chose Metzlers but really didn't want to go back to Dunlops because I liked the way the Avon handled better than the Dunlop. With the Dunlop I felt every crack in the road as well as expanded steel bridges and groove pavement. So far I really like the Metzlers. For many seasons these were the prefered tires and then one season some folks experienced peices coming out of the tires. In my opinion (and I worked for Firestone for 12 years in the plant making tires) it could have been a bad batch of rubber or some other component so I'm not worried at this point. So far so good and right now I LOVE my bike again.... Was on the hwy at 140 Kms/hr for an extended period yesterday without a problem. Could NOT do that with the Avons. I believe Avon makes a great tire but there is a compatability issue with SOME 1st gens. Wayne

OK....I finally got my new tires mounted today. Local Honda shop is open until 8:00 and I managed to get home early enough to get the wheels off and get them over there, mounted and balanced and then got them back home and the bike is ready again. This will be my test of the Avon's versus the Michelin's. I have been very pleased with the Michelin Commanders with my only very small complaint being that they did howl just a bit in the long curves. I liked them so much that deciding to try the Avon's was a tough decision for me. I've heard so many good reviews though that I decided to give them a try. If they grip as well on the wet roads and give me decent mileage then that will be fine. If they are quiet in the curves also, that will be icing on the cake. We'll see. By the way, I do have the leveling links and once again went with the 150 (stock) size tire on the front.

Yes it's about a second gen... I just recently puchased my 2004 Midnight RSV. I was wonderering about the handling of the bike and that was answered in previous threads. To say the least I am getting a new set of avons tomorrow. My questions are: Is there a fix for the low speed wabble? I have notice a whine in the drive tran. is that normal? Thanks for all your responses.

What is the deal eith the smaller front tire? Does it help with performance or hinder? I'm going to order my avons later today and was wondering what to do on the front. So help me out BIG OR SMALL THAT IS THE QUESTION????????????
-
From the letter I received from Avon, I just came back from putting 42 psi front and 48 psi rear. DO IT!!! That's what I was looking for when I bought the Avon's in the first place. High speed much improved and sticky in the twisties. Try it, you'll like it.

Ok, I got my new Avons on the bike... should I run max air pressure in them?? about 60% of my riding is 1 up.. Thanks
