While we were camping up at Mohican State Forest area by Loudonville Ohio last weekend, the wife and I went out for a quick 1 hour ride Saturday morning. Went into town, filled the tank and went to return to camp. Was going to take a different route and missed the turn so we went further to find a driveway to turn around in. Car behind us was a little close, so I turned into an unfamiliar driveway a little too quick and hit the brakes, just happened to get along the edge of the asphalt and gravel, hit a little loop in the asphalt, off camber to the right dropping away. Went to put the foot down and figured it was too far! Already passed the point of no return, I just let her down easy, the wife wasn't as easy as she took a bit of a tumble (now she knows why I don't want her riding in sandals!), she stubbed her knee on the gravel but is alright. Nothing on the bike but a little scratch on the right rar guard bar down low, tweaked the chrome bumper leading edge just a bit. Nothing hurt more than our pride. Oh well, another donation to the can! Dan

This isn't particularly technical, but... I transitioned from Goldwings (1500 and 1800) to a 2009 RSV last fall and my wife and I are planning our first vacation on it. Both of my Goldwings' kickstands would sink into warmish asphalt like a hot knife going into butter. That resulted in a free show for bystanders who were treated to a vocabulary demonstration while I freed the 'wing. Eventually I opted for a plastic footprint looking thing which I left behind at a restaurant and then I used various pieces of metal designed to spread out the wing's weight. My question is: do I need one with the RSV? The RSV kickstand looks like it spreads out the weight nicely, but I don't want to take any unnecessary chances. Thanks in advance.

Don't know if I posted this here or not. A couple of years ago, I had been out riding with the group I ride with and had stopped for supper. This was in the fall of the year here in SE Texas and was cool but not cold. We were in the resturant about 1 1/2 hr. When we came out, temp had cooled into the low 50's or high 40's. Started bike pulled out on asphalt. Was about a 1/2 mile to ramp for freeway, I-10 east. Went under I-10 was making turn to get on feeder road to ramp, when this van went around me on the right side intending to get in front of me. Didn't want to be behind said van, so grabbed a BIG handful of throttle. Now this is where this gets exciting!! A 1st. gen Venture in 1st gear really likes to accelerate, which in itself in not a bad thing. But, and I say again, but with cold tires and cold asphalt it turns into a BAD THING quickly!!!! The rear end decided to lead at this moment, and the direction it wanted to go was in the general direction of this 3/4 ton van which was beside me at this time!! I got it straightened up and didn't go down thank GOD, but I thought I might have to change underewar when I got home. The point of this, is don't grab a lot of throttle with cold tires on cold asphalt. Don H.

Well I replaced the Bridgestones with Dunlops (404) after chatting with Gary a while ago. I cannot believe the difference!! The bike handles more nimbly and I no longer feel those little cracks etc on the asphalt. I did not go with the narrower front this time - may try that next but so far - WOW - what a difference!! Cheers Eugene
