I originally posted this on one of the Goldwing sites and got no response. For the last few weeks I've been trying to get my telephone synched up to work through the Zumo like I had it on the RSV. When I connect the mic splitter I get a lot of noise that sounds like alternator whine and I really don't know what to try next. The noise is coming through the mic circuit. Without the intercom on I don't hear it on the bike but the person on the other end of phone call does. I could live with that. However, when the IC is turned on the noise is unbearable. So far I have checked all connections and grounds. I replaced the noise isolator on the AUX input. I've tried both an MP3 and Edsets mic splitter. I tried unplugging the mic from the GPS but the noise is still there on the IC. If I take the mic splitter out there is no noise on the IC. I have the Honda rear passenger controller which gives you a filter that is plugged into the mic circuit. I've tried with and without it and there is no difference. I can increase or reduce the noise by moving the wires around but I can never eliminate it. Would a torroid magnet on of the wires help? Is there anything else I can try? Thanks for any help, Dennis

kickstand removal question
nc jack posted a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
i'm the new owner of a 1996 royal star (xvz13a). the previous owner had somehow snapped off the prong used to lower the kickstand. i've read the posts about welding the kickstand, but i've purchased a new kickstand from a salvage yard and would prefer to replace the kickstand. here's my problem: i can't remove the bolt holding the kickstand because it screws out against the alternator cover and won't come all the way out. is there a way to remove this bolt without removing the alternator cover? thanks for any advice.- 1 reply

My bike has been chosen for alternative fuel. I have to add a car 140 amp alternator to my 92 venture royale. Any idea how?* Thanks in advance. Was thinking of bolting straight onto the stator nut. Or putting a pulley there? Thanks! Lee

Her is a new one that I can not figure out. I have a 96 GMC K1500 P/U, pretty much loaded with all of the toys. Whenever the engine hits 4000 rpm the alternator shuts off. The voltage drops from the normal 14.2 down to 11.5 and all of the lights dim noticeably and the truck starts to run rough. As soon as the rpm drop back under 4K the voltage comes back, The voltage changes like you threw a switch, it does not come in and out gradually. This voltage drop is being measured on both the dash gauge and a separate digital voltmeter. It does not matter if I am driving or parked, it still does this right around 4K rpm. It has been doing this for a couple of years now. I have since replaced both the alternator and the battery (yes they were bad) but that had no effect on this problem. Any ideas??? As long as I stay under 4k the charging system is fine. Typically the only time I do hit 4K is when I pull out to pass a slowpoke on the highway and the trans downshifts.

I have a 06 RSTD. Im getting alternator whine from somewhere on my frontend when i get to around 60mph and up. Varying intensity I dont know if theres a weak ground or something. Does anyone else hear a whine around the speedo when they get up that fast. The other part of this is I tried checking my grounds. SOMEONE PLEASE check With a VOM mV from the neg lead to the battery and the pos lead to the bars. Then turn to ignition. Everywhere on my bike shows gounded 2.5mV but the bars and tank show 200-300 mV. Dont know if this means anything. Dont know why the bars arent grounding as they're attached to the triple trees and those show good. I know 300 mV isnt crap but it may point an issue. Please any ideas im going on a long trip in a few weeks and, this sound is driving me insane. Thanks Jeremy

Hi everyone, I am a new member/poster and need some info if someone can help. I am seriously considering the purchase of an 08' RSV and need to know the alternator output (amps) of the bike. The dealer for whatever reason can't answer my question and there is no info on Yamaha's website. I plan on installing heated grips, heated aftermarket seat, extra power outlets (for heated clothing and Ipod), and driving/fog lamps. It is possible all of these items will be "on" at the same time and I need to make sure the bike can handle these accessories without any battery drain before I make my purchase. Thanks in advance. BTW: Excellent forum and members.

Not Venture Related, but I thought some of you gearheads may be interested in a 26 Minute lecture I gave at U of M on Turbo Charger driven Alternators and one particular type of CVT which is currently found in the toyota prius and the ford escape. The lecture is in three parts, each about 9 minutes, and overlap slightly. Constructive / Non constructive critism is appreciated. Also, if youn click on the little grey button in the corner of the veiwing screen, you will toggle to full screen mode. At the Large White Plug, with the 3 #14 wires comeing from the Alternator: Do the following: Measure the AC voltage on each wire. You can stick the meter probs into the end of the White Plug. ( located just behind left rear cylinder, White connector, with 3 white wires thru it ) With Engine running, you should Read 9 to 15 volts AC, ( thats AC, not DC ) on each wire. If the voltage on " one" wire is substantially , Lower then the other two, then your Alternator is failing. This is a much better way to check it then useing the Resistance reading method given in the Service Manual.
