OK first of all this site rocks. Since I bought my 85 Venture I have found most everything I needed to know here. But I have a rear end issue that I'm sure is common. I was going to replace the gear oil in the rear end. Book says .3 of a liter or 300ml. Get a measuring cup just to see how much drains out. Get my allen head sockets and 19mm socket for the drain and sit on the floor. The fill cap on the rear, about half way up looks a little knarly but the metric allen slides in sorta tight. Give a pull with the ratchet and around it comes....ta da stripped.....I assume this should not be this tight. Tried the SAE a little bigger and tapped it in with a hammer...no good. Is there a easy fix for this? I could drill it out and save the threads and get a new cap. Only worry is that the filings would fall down inside!! Not good! As always looking to fix the most economical. But if I need to go to the dealer I will. Thanks everybody!!

Anyone have 2 of those small plastic caps that goes over the allen head screws that holds the right Fairing Cover onto the Faring.

Back in 01 when I bought my 02 RSMV you could buy little chrome spots (as I remember) and insert them into allen hex socket bolts to dress it up. Over the years some have disappeared and I went to look for them online and nothing comes up. Anyone have a link for these. I need them in the 5mm allen hex size and a couple in the 8mm size.

About a year or so ago, I was on a trip and when I started to down shift, my shift lever was dangling from the rod and laying on the footboard. The allen head bolt that mounts it to the bike had come out, and gone. I managed to use a cable tie to connect it back to the bike and able to get to the nearest AutoZone to buy a metric bolt that would fit. I hadn't thought anymore about that since it happened until today. My buddy came down around lunch time and said "you'll never believe what happened to me on the way to work this morning!" Yep, his shifter allen head bolt vibrated out. Lucky for him, it was laying on the floorboard and he put his foot on it until he could stop and put it back in. Suggest every one take a minute and check that bolt and maybe a little lock tite wouldn't hurt. MIKE aka Uturn

I haven't been able to find a write up on here on the r/r of the slave cylinder. I will document my job with pix & post it here for others that follow. Looking at the service manual, I have been able to surmise the following must be done. But I have some preliminary questions I will post in red: 1. Remove bolts on the left footrest-shifter. 2. Remove the 6 allen bolts on the middle-gear cover.. Do I have to drain the oil? 3. Remove the bolt that attaches the clutch line to the slave What size are they? 4 Remove the two allen bolts holding the cylinder to the engine. What size are they? Can I use Allen Wrenchs or will I need to buy metric hex sockets? Also is there a preferred bleeding technique or is it a pain like bleeding my Honda's front caliper? (not enough pressure) Basically That is all the questions I have to prepare for this. I looks simple enough. Andy

Hi everyone. Thought I would share this one with you for what it's worth. I had a lot of plastic caps left over after I fitted my new Kitchen and thought of a use for them. They fit over the heads of the Phillips screw heads to tidy the units up after construction. I have used them to tidy up some of the heads of Allen studs on the bike. 1). First find ones that fit into the holes of the Allen studs you want to cover even if they don't fit snug a little waterproof sealer putty or paper tack (Blue-Tack) the stuff that does not set can be added on fitting. 2). Push them into some of the putty type stuff previously mentioned. This is to stop them blowing away when you spray them. 3). Spray on some metallic paint or whatever colour you like, this stuff I used is supposed to be chrome. (No way is it chrome but it is a good alloy colour). Allow to dry and fit to bike. The horrid black bits on the engine are corn flies, they get everywhere this time of year. Best Wishes. Neil. Old Miner.

Trying To Fill Differential
GaryZ posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK guys, I have drained the differential and calculated that the refill is 300cc or 10oz (.3L per the manual). My problem is the fill plug doesn't want to come loose. It appears to be a 6mm female hex head and my allen wrench only wants to twist. I have soaked it in penetrating oil for now . . . Any ideas?- 9 replies

Yesterday I got my MC jack modified to fit under my RSV, so today I decided to start the process of lowering the front forks and adjusting the steering bearing. When I got the front shell of the fairing one of the six bolt appeares to have the end of an allen wrench broken off in it. So I thought I could just drill it out. Nope! The broken allen head is to hard to drill. I then thought I could use my dremel and grind a slot for a screw driver but the bolt is the lower right and recessed into the fairing so the cutting wheel will not fit. So here I am look for help:8: on how to get the bolt out. Oh ya the bike has a light bar. Whats the trick on getting to the bolts? They are too close to the fairing to get to.

Thanks to Freebird for an EXCELLENT pictoral and instructions regarding moving the fairing. I am about to do this myself so I can upgrade my Zumo 660 to the Zumo 665. Again, I appreciate the detailed instructions and I only have a couple of minor questions since the original instructions were written by Freebird in 2006. My first question is the 2 allen bolts size. I think they are 5mm, but I'm not for sure until I get some "ball end" allen wrenches. So are these bolts 5mm? My second question or request is for any additional tips for splitting the fairing or things that I should look for while the fairing is off. Thanks again for the great information. Wally

Any ideas how to remove a stripped Allen bolt? My plan was to remove the saddlebags so I could install the Saddlebag rails that I purchased. The Allen bolts where so tight.. That I stripped one of them…what would be the best way to remove that stripped Allen bolt?
-
So I have started the tear down of the 1st gen so that I may (after 10 Yrs) replace the 2nd gear. In the tear down I have come across a few problems that I am wondering about. The first question being do I have to remove the clutch release cylinder in order to remove the engine? I have found that one of the bolts is stripped :thumbdown:and its a 6MM? allen bolt. If you have seen or done this before you know how tight it is in there. Any suggestions on how to remove this bolt? Thanks in advance:bowdown: Michael

Will a louder exhaust sound cover some of that whinning from the clutch? I was just wondering if anyone that has put aftermarket exhaust on or modified the stock mufflers has noticed any reduction of the whinning. Thanks S. Allen

Also a Ign. key in a small bag with 2 small set screws and a allen wrench ..This is driving me crazy.. So where does this go? Please don't tell me this what holds the bike together...

For any of you attending the International Rally in Arkansas, here's a chance to save a bit of money. This is the message from Allen: Don, Can you make a post for me that if anyone wants to order any Diamond R Accessories now and are going to be attending the International Rally next month ,I will bring there order with me and save them the S/H cost.Another savings will be if they order there I will have to collect taxes for the state while I am selling in ARK.( If they live out of Texas , they don't pay Tx sales tax if ordering online. Just a thought to help save our members a little cash.I want to make sure I bring enough stuff so no one will be disappointed if I run out.Look forward to seeing everyone. Thanks & Enjoy The Ride Allen & Patti

My 86 has four dome head, chromed allen bolts that hold the chin cowl on. They look nice and don't snag anything when you are wiping her down. One of mine is stripping in the allen hole so I looked up the part in Yamaha parts list: 3890110-06078-00BOLT, HEXAGON SOCKET and even in the drawing it LOOKS like a regular socket head bolt... I didn't think thesse were custom but I'd sure like to find new ones... any ideas? The normal is a socket head on the rest of the MKii bikes out there?

I've had a few folks email me about the center stands that I used to make. As I have replied, I no longer offer the stands. I was talking to Allen at Diamond R Accessories the other day though and he tells me this: "I have received about 8-10 of our center stands from the machine shop if you hear of anyone wanting one. These are ones that they had enough parts left after we quit carrying them to make complete stand. However, I will be out of pocket for about 6 weeks, I am having another knee replacement in the morning. After I get back up and around to where I can I will start putting them together." So contact Allen if you are interested.
