I woke up this morning (New Years Day) and laid in bed thinking about things, and a trip that I've been thinking about took the stage. I'm sure that most of you have watched episodes of "Highway Thru Hell" on The Weather Channel------I've been thinking about riding some of these roads, but of course in July or August. Do any of you live or at least ridden around the 'Highway'? We've gotten our friends interested in this also, but he added heading up NW so we can touch the south tip of Alaska also. It'll be a long ride (we live in Illinois) but it should be beautiful. I'm also thinking about the actual route we'd take to get to and from where we cross into Canada so we can see some new things. My Dad, younger brother, and I are heading off for Alaska tomorrow morning. We are renting KLR650's in Anchorage and riding for 12 days throughout this great big state. Day 1 - Anchorage to Denali Nat'l Park Day 2 - Tour Denali Day 3 - Ride to Fairbanks - Visit Gold Dredge #8 Day 4 - Ride to Arctic Circle, take picture and spread some ashes, return to Fairbanks Day 5 - Ride west to Manley Hot Springs, soak for a while, return to Fairbanks Day 6 - Ride to Tok Day 7 - Ride to Eagle, then cross into Canada to Dawson on Top of the World Highway Day 8 - Ride back to Tok Day 9 - Ride to Valdez Day 10 - Take Alaska Marine Highway (ferry) to Wittier. Ride to Seward Day 11 - Ride to Homer Day 12 - Ride to Anchorage Day 13 - Fly home and resume my regularly scheduled life. About 2600 miles. 140 miles on gravel to/from the Arctic Circle. About 150 miles of gravel to Manley Hot Springs. Balance should be paved (unless we take some detours). We were originally intending to ride up there, but we only have two weeks. The ride would take about 6 days each way (with my Dad along - he can't/won't do the huge miles to get up there in 3 or 4 days). This would only leave about 4 or 5 days to ride in Alaska. Just didn't make sense. Need at a minimum 3 weeks to ride up/back. Will have a ride report when I get back. See ya' all in a couple of weeks. RR

I have a Scooter Schooner tent trailer at my parent's house in Coeur d'Alene, ID that I need brought to Anchorage, Alaska. This would be ideal for somebody planning to camp on the way up and then taking the ferry back down (to Bellingham, WA). My daughter and I used it on our 8100 mile trip last summer but couldn't get it on the ferry for our trip home.

Incredible picture taken in Sitka, Alaska The photo was taken at the entrance to Katlian Bay at the end of the road in Sitka, Alaska. The whale is surfacing to scoop up a mouthful of herring (the small fish seen at the surface around the kayak). The kayaker is a local Sitka Dentist. I haven't talked to him but haven't heard of any injuries out of this experience. ================== This is an actual picture from Alaska ! He's actually in the whales MOUTH That's me in the picture. That is a whale that was just around the corner from the ferry terminal located there. "Paddle really fast" is the only thing I could think of at the time.. Also thinking that I don't look like a herring, don't smell like a herring but with the same herring instinct of "get the hell out of the way of that big mouth!!" Still living to tell yet another story.. Sitka’s very own Dr. Richard Kraft during one of his routine oral examinations:

I've again, been thinking about a m/c trip to Alaska. I figured on riding to Alaska, then shipping the bike back. - Is this cheating? I CAN take 4 weeks off work, but would rather take 3. Do you think a person could travel from Omaha to Washington, then up the coast to Alaska in 3 weeks? I haven't looked at a map yet to figure out the path. I have a cousin in N.E. Washington that I would like to stop and see for a day on the way up. craigr

Well, our "Bucket List" trip to Alaska has begun. Got a late start this morning and got held up at the US boarder again by the fruit and vegetable police. Had to detour around some street flooding in Dearborn and we really got tied up in some heavy and slooooow traffic in Chicago. Finally made it into Wisconsin where we stopped for tonight. Our plan is to leave the Space Shuttle at a friend's place near Edmonton Alberta this weekend and then head out on the bike for Prince Rupert BC where we catch a ferry for Juneau Ak on 6/20. After that we have no set plans and will just go with the flow. Will update when ever I can get a conection.

Well, after my trip to Oregon and Glacier NP ride last year I'm planning on Alaska for the summer of 09. Thinking of going back to Glacier NP, to Banff and up the rockies to Dawson Creek and then the Alaskan highway to Fairbanks. From there to the Arctic circle and back again. I've read a couple of ride reports of people doing it on their Goldwings, so I figure my RSTD can do it fine. Anybody else taken this trip? I'm planning on picking up the Milepost this year to start planning. I need to make the round trip in less than 20 days, so I'm a little concerned about the timing of everything.

Not long ago I posted my early winter arrival. Well, in Alaska you can not ignore it. It is awesome if you just visit, however, it can be deadly in a semi. Alan had to take a load down there and for two days now, I have not heard from him. He had send me via e-mail pictures and I'm very worried. The roads are narrow, icy and snow packed. Not excactly where you want to be in a semi. He told me if I have not heard from him by Tuesday to call the authority. I was hoping you all would say a prayer for his safe return. My sincere thanks Renate

I had to go to Hawaii and Alaska recently for business (yea, rough job). In both places I had a very pleasant rental experience and wanted to recommend the places in case any of you get the chance to go there. Hawaii - In Honolulu the rental company I used was Big Kahuna Rentals http://www.bigkahunarentals.com. In the cruiser style they had some Harleys and a couple of smaller Honda Shadows. I rented a 750 Shadow, it was perfect for the island, after all there ain't a whole lot of miles there. Alaska - In Anchorage I used Alaska Rider http://www.akrider.com. Their cruisers were all Harleys. I rented a KLR 650 dual sport for my off day, first time on a dual sport, but then again I did get on some roads I would not have wanted to be on with the Venture.

A couple of friends of mine did this run a couple of summers ago from a city a couple of hours west of here all the way up to Alaska. I know they rode Harleys on this run but I thought some ppl would want to see the scenery anyway, some of it is so gorgeous!!... (note the Harleys had breakdown issues... ) http://www.scra.ca/alaska

I heard there's a cruise ship of ferry that you can load your bike on to and travel the BC coastline up to Alaska or vise-versa. Has anyone done this and if so what can you tell me about it? What ports does the ship sail from? Any web sites? This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I probably won't be up for if this year but maybe next year. I figure leave home around the first of June and be in Alaska for the first day of summer to get the longest daylight hours, then sail down the coast to Vancouver and then maybe down into California along the coast and zig-zag back home.

I just got a call from someone in the department of motor vehicles in Alaska. One of my insureds from here in Georgia was there and they were going to revoke his drivers license because he didn't have proof that his auto insurance would extend to a rental car. I got them to agree to let me fax a letter to them stating that his insurance would extend to a rental car. What is up with that?
