  1. Found this on the web. Thought it might be of some interest. 10 Facts about AGM Batteries 1. AGM batteries were originally developed for the military and so are very robust and can take much more abuse than wet-cell or standard deep-cycle gel batteries. As the electrolyte is contained within the glass mats, there is nothing to leak or spill and they are relatively free from freezing damage. 2. As with other sealed batteries there is little to no maintenance with AGMs. Even more of an advantage is that most of them are 'recombinant'. What this means is that the oxygen and hydrogen combine inside the battery during charging cycles to form water - hence very little water loss and hydrogen emission. These batteries are therefore less hazardous than their counterparts. 3. AGM batteries can be stored in otherwise prohibited areas because of their advantages of no leakage and no fumes. Another advantage of this property is that they can be stored on end or on their sides if need be without damage. 4. The battery construction places the electrolyte in closer proximity to the active plate material. This enhances the efficiency of both discharge and charge cycles. Because of this, and because the internal resistance of the battery is very low they generally charge at a faster rate and to a higher capacity than non-AGM batteries. They can also take heavy discharge rates without damage and can take the occasional discharge below the recommended 50% of capacity rule. 5. AGMs have a very low discharge rate when stored for extended periods, and even if left to totally discharge in storage they can be quickly recharged back to over 95% of their capacity providing they have not been left too long in a discharged state. The advantage is, no flat battery after storing for extended periods (within reason of course). 6. Under normal operating conditions, a good service life of up to 5 years can be attained. With quality care and handling, managed discharge and charge even longer lifetimes are common. Some reports quote up to 10 years. 7. AGM batteries are quite a bit more expensive that conventional wet-cell and standard deep cycle. But if you measure this cost against their robustness, longer life expectancy and better performance, they still present as the best value for money over the longer term. 8. A 'normal' car alternator will only charge a wet-cell type battery to around 70-80% of its capacity. Because of its higher charging rates an AGM battery will just about fully charge and at a faster rate from the same type of alternator. 9. AGM batteries are capable of charging rates up to 75% of their rated ampere hour capacity. In some cases this can lead to damaged alternators or standard auto chargers that may be susceptible to the excessive heat generated when trying to deliver maximum amps. The good point though is that AGMs will charge at lesser rates and be quite happy doing that. But, if you are going to spend money on a quality battery then you should really be looking at buying a quality three-stage charger. 10. AGM batteries can handle a multitude of roles. They can be used as starting batteries, in deep cycle applications, or as standby batteries for critical powered systems. These reasons make them ideal for camping applications. They can also be connected in series or parallel banks providing for various terminal voltages and ampere capacities. Example: two AGMs can be wired in parallel in a pop-up camper. Charged via a three stage 'Smart' charger and never have an issue with them.
  2. Got the info on the Hardley. It is 07 Springer Screaming Eagle Soft-Tail I think this thing takes the same battery as a 2nd Gen. A 20 something. Any one know of Promo codes for Advance Auto right now or anything? Cheapest AGM I could find was 109 bucks with free shipping. I only paid $62 I think for my 1st Gen with the promo code Dale found.
  3. Sears has the Die Hard battery listed as a AGM with the acid pac you add yourself. I thought all AGMs came sealed?? 108 bucks a pop but as good as Die Hards used to be years ago I was wondering. Yeah I know there I go thinking again!! I'll get back in my corner.
  4. Advanced Auto Parts has MagnaPower 12-Volt Sealed AGM Premium Batteries for $84.99 for 1st Gen add something for $1.00 to make it $85.99 coupon code RAF7JA1102 takes $35.00 off = $50.99 + tax. Part No. ETX18L Voltage:12, Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) @ 0°F:340, Amp Hours:20
  5. Battery on my 03 decided it was going on permanent disability, so I went in search of a new Deka ETX20L AGM battery. This is generally accepted as the one at the top of the heap as far as batteries for the 1800 are concerned. American made, maintenance free AGM, high CCA, one year warranty. Wanted to let you all know that I found what appears to be the best price at Tri-State Battery Warehouse online. It is $77.95 including shipping. 6. History, 83 venture. PO battery junk and replaced with AGM dec09 from batterys plus. April 2010 battery blew up like basket ball(case swelled)-likely my fault, charged with auto battery charger at about 10A. Battery Plus honored warrenty and replaced april 2010 Currently working on electrical mods, and about 1 month testing on bike(key on, test, key off....)battery down to 10V, never any power problems during any testing. Mods done and working great, last night decided to charge (4A) and ride in AM. AM charger shows failure, key on and everything dead.(clock display on key off then disappears key on). V check battery=9V, amp check accross battery(20A scale)=.1A try to recharge, and computer charger detects fault and fails to start. Back to Batterys Plus, they test simular readings, are trying to recover battery but likely hopeless-not responding correctly to charger, warrenty expired, purchase new battery and tender(battery minder plus). If they manage to recover will be spare. pictured 1-battery using, 2-computerized charger using, 3- new tender Now the question, What could have caused the AGM to go completely dead overnight while on computerized charger, and it was fine power wise prior to charging? Do I need to be leary of my computerized charger? Fixing to go out and check key off load test, and amp test computer charger(on auto battery) to verify 2-4-6amp readings are correct. will post update. Not having much luck with AGMs, what am I doing wrong? update key off=.6mA charger at 2A=2.7A, at 4A=4.0A, at 6A=5.0A, charges for just 1 pulse then quickly detects complete charge and shuts down charge complete on all 3 cycles
  7. Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone on here has tried the MegaMax gel battery that is for sale on E Bay? It's advertised as direct fit for the first gen which sounds good but I'm just wondering if it's worth saving the $35 or so as compared to the Odyssey PC 680. Any insight you gentlemen have is greatly appreciated. I'm kind of a newbie to the first gen so go easy on me please. Thanks Big Mark

  9. I recently bid farewell to yet another lead/acid battery. This one lasted three years. I took the advice of many posts I've seen in here and purchased an AGM type from Interstate. When I installed it the engineer in me just had to test the voltage with the bike @ 2000 RPM's and I found it was half a volt low, reading 13.5VDC and not much more at higher rev's. It never quite made it all the way to 14V. So yesterday I double checked and cleaned all the various connections at the battery, stator and R/R. I tested the stator voltage and resistance as it shows in the manual all tests were fine on all three wires. Last I did the continuity test on the R/R thats shown in the service manual. So here's my problem (Finally!) On all of the R/R tests where I should have been reading continuity I was actually reading approx 400K ohms and not what I would call continuity, which is zero ohms. I also checked it with my old analog meter and got the same results. Is this 400K ohm reading as bad as I think it is? The new AGM battery seems fine on the few rides I've been on since I put it in. FANTASTIC battery BTW. Did I mention, its a 1984 Venture Royale?

  11. As all of you interested in picking up an Odyssey battery may...or may not... know after running into problems with the supplier I decided to discontinue the latest group buy. I still wanted to use an AGM battery, so what I did is take a chance and pick one up off Ebay. It is slightly smaller than the PC680 and in some instances has a better rating. So far...so good. The battery I picked up was a Half U-1 AGM from www.Gruberpower.com I tested it during our lastest Tahoe dayride, and it didn't miss a beat. Started with power every time during the entire 13hour trip. I also let the scoot sit for a week, and just went out to start it. The motor started without any hesitation. I can't attest to battery life, but for $32 + shipping it's a steal. It's made in China, and cosmetically it looks very nice. The only drawback..if you could call it that.. was the anode posts are a little different and some thought needs to be taken to route the positive and neg cables. A little twisting and it's do-able. So, if anyone was waiting feverishly for an Odyssey, here I feel is a great alternative. Anything else you'd like to know....ask, and I'll try to answer.
  12. Happy New Year! I've got some questions about batteries. I'm sold on AGM technology, but why Odyssey in particular? I hear "more power" as a reason. But according to spec sheets (using the PC680 for the first gen as an example), there are other AGM batteries that have more. CCA - some have 300-350 range, Od. has 220. AH - others are rated at 22, Od. is 17. This makes sense because the Od. is actually a little smaller and lighter physically. So why go with Od. instead of the others? Are they more honest about their ratings and actually as powerful or more powerful than the others? Is it quality? Reliability? Life? I've known other brand AGM batteries to last 5-6 years in a bike or quad, which as you know is probably double the average for wet cell. Also, why does Od. specify the "MJ" version for the Venture when some other bikes call for the standard PC680? Does the batt compartment in the Venture get much hotter than others? Anybody got an opinion, rumor or lie they would like to share about this? Thanks, Jeremy
