  1. I have a wonderful set of cobra pipes on my new (to me) 09 RSTD, however, the community around me has many small children that would be appreciative if I was a little quieter around the neighborhood I stumbled on to this system online and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it or had seen/heard it in person. If there are any others like it people know of or that have a good balance between being heard on the road in traffic and quiet enough at low rev not to rattle the windows like a freight train going by I would appreciate it. http://www.nationalcycle.com/n41310.html JB
  2. Want to get an 8x20 toyhauler and haul my RSV. I'm looking for advice on a wheel chock for the front tire. I'd like something I can secure to the floor somehow to keep it from sliding, but when removed I don't want a big bracket sitting there that I constantly stub my toe on! Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...JR
  3. Have been slowly restoring an old 83 Venture recently purchased. It appears to have a nice accumulation of rust (sporry) on the frame and exposed bolts on the motor. Would appreciate advice on how to remove rust have been advised to use wire brush on drill and naval jelly but wondered if someone had better rust removal advice. Thanks James
  4. 1989 XVZ13 63K Miles. Purchased 2 years ago and finally got suspension and other troubles sorted. I've been getting a few weekend close-to-home miles over last 2 months. 2-4 hour rides max. (I don't trust her yet). Bike has developed (or I just began to notice?) a low RPM miss. Under low throttle acceleration at about 3600RPM I hear popping from exhaust then, as RPM increases to around 4000, a 4th cylinder appears to engage and bike smooths out. Closing throttle from high RPM results in a backfiring fit as it slows through about 4500RPM - very predictable. At constant cruise any RPM bike vibrates and sounds like a 3 cylinder machine. At Wide Open Throttle, bike is "notchy" with moderate acceleration up to about 4000RPM then Oh My Dear God! It appears to discover the 4th cylinder and earns its reputation. It's producing 37MPG over the last 8 tanks of gas. Not right. Mucho Seafoam thru unit: ~10% of every 2nd tank has been miracle juice. Figure 8 tanks is enough to fix the "bad gas" scenario & do all the chemistry cleaning possible on the bike with Seafoam. Another solvent recommendation before fiddling with her guts? What should I be looking for, do, check, buy, etc.? A reference to a thread covering my problem is probably all you need to post - I simply can't whittle down my search enough to find the right / best one. I'd love to hear any advice that anyone has to give me - lord knows I'm not much of a mechanic: witness installing 3 used mono shocks all resulting in too high a ride height only to find the linkages that came with the replacement shocks were ALL different than the original. Pull original linkage off of blown shock, install new shock into old linkage and install onto bike and, Presto! FIXED! Arrrgh!
  5. Boy child called me. Bike is jumping out of first gear. Told him to start in 2nd a feather till we look it over. Then he call's back and lets me know that flid is running of of the clutch master. ARRGHH. I have a rebuild kit coming for the clutch master. Don't know if thats why the tranny was acting up or not. Any advice on either issue would be aprreciated. Both my son and I ride bike as primary transportation. So if it goes down he's down.
  6. hello folks, I am a new member of this site and recent owner of my 2005 RSV. The previous owner of the bike encouraged me to check out this forum and so far I love it. Very awesome. Now being a new owner I was wondering if anyone had any advice about the bike or maintaining it, anything I should keep an eye out for, maybe some recommended upgrades? (already put a new windshield on it lol) Thank you
  7. one of my pins came out of segement. i have removed the shifter lever and shaft but cant seem to break that countersunk star headed screw in the center any advice would help thanks.
  8. This time it's me! Coming down a small hill, in a light rain, we came to a 90 degree bend. As we entered the curve....oh no it's covered in very fine gravel. As we began to slide we hit the guardrail at about 25 mph. We flew off the side and landed in the road. We just got home from the hospital an hour ago. I have bruised ribs from hitting the handlebars (I think), wife has a concussion. Thank God it was nothing worse,(but the ribs are still hurting!). We were hauled away before the bike was, so in the morning I'll have to track it down. It didn't look pretty when I last saw her laying on her side with her front wedged under the guardrail. Now, advice from you that have "been there done that", what are my next steps? If you were at Don's for maintainence day maybe you saw our baby. She is/was a white RSTD with chrome and gold/silver pin-stripping with 3 crosses on the tank and fenders. Hopefully she will look like that again someday! Mark
  9. I like to look over the WS, not thru it. Given my height this means the stock WS is about 1-1/2 too high. bike is 2008 star venture was looking at it and seems like I could cut away the bottom to lower it and much more easily mask my cuts. did some searching but didn't find any relevant threads. Anyone done this or have advice?
  10. This was posted on another forum and I thought some here would find it informative. I can vouch for most of the advice given. YMMV. http://www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine/IronButt_1002_62-66_Hot.pdf
  11. if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
  12. Okay, so I'm wanting a new set of pipes on my bike. Would prefer to go with a full set and not just mufflers. I want something quiet but with a bit throatier of a sound. I could have sworn my last RSTD had Hard Kromes, however after looking at their site, they do not have a specially fitted one for an RSTD. Any suggestions on what I should go with? I have a 2006. Thank you for any advice. Flash
  13. I recently bought a trailer from harbor freight for a trip this summer out west before I pack up for the trip I planning I draggin it around home a lot any advice on max weight, tire psi, suspension psi, safe speed, anything I should watch for as far as harbor freight quality "bearings, balanced tires" etc. Also I haven't tore off the stock lights and put my L.E.D.'s on yet, am I ok to run the standard lights as far as the staters go?
  14. Heads up Toronto. I have a package that I need to ship to a customer up your way. It's about 25# and 18x18x24 in size so this time around USPS is not possible. What's the better choice between UPS and FedX?? I understand UPS can get you on agent fees. Is FedX the same?? Thanks for any advice.
  15. Guys, I need advice. I love motorcycling more than anything else. I love it, and that is it. I have not ridden since November. I am basically going insane, wanting to ride. It has been warm and wonderful. My husband has not moved the bike an inch. It is sitting in the garage saying, Peggy get on me. I am going crazy. He has not gotten the bike out to work on it. I keep talking about riding and wanting to ride, but it is still there. I love our bike. I wash it. I wax it. I love it as though it is my fourth child. It means a lot to me. What am I doing wrong? I need advice. I just want to go for a ride! Help me. Sad in Cincinnati or Yama Mama
  16. I recently sold my '89 Radian as I was looking to get into something a little more suited for longer hauls and the Venture caught my eye. I found a '86 Venture Royale with 74K miles that I plan to check out tomorrow. I called the owner and he had this info to pass: Runs great although lately haven't ridden much and therefore at low engine speeds need to apply a little choke. Has the air shocks, cruise, clock, factory am/fm/cb, intercom, headphone for both riders, driver back rest, wind wings, highway floorboards, aux driving lights, extended chrome fender w/ fender trim, trunk rack, chrome light bar on trunk, waterproof cover and dust cover, taller windshield, venture bags, excellent condition paint, tires are good, garage kept. Currently owned by an elderly gentleman that has owned it since '92. He has done the service himself or with a mechanic friend. He seems mechanically inclined as also restores old cars. He said he had the clutch plates replaced not too long ago. It was laid down once by the owner before him but only the slightest little scrape on the mirror was the only damage and he said he has had no issues with it since. I am planning on riding out tomorrow to go check it out and was wondering if you guys had any advice. He's asking $3500. Does this seem like a fair price? I have spent the past few days scouring this site learning as much as possible. I plan on asking if he has had any issues with 2nd gear and if the starter has had any high heat issues. Beyond that any other advice would be appreciated. I am familiar with Yamaha carbs as I was constantly cleaning and syncing the carbs on my Radians. If I do end up tearing into these ones I know to check the diaphrams and hope there are no issues there. If I were to negotiate what would be the areas of concern? Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing what y'all have to say. Matt
  17. New member as of today. been trying to find all info i can on 09 venture. Currently ride a 1300 vtx that i really like. Lookin for a second bike for boss lady and me to take longer trips on. VTX is fine for me but she needs more comfort. Found a red/black 09 venture with less than 25k miles for around $9000, maybe $8500. Lookin for any advice as far as price, quality, weight, easy manuverability, and the whine that I keep reading about, and anything else I need to know. Thks.
  18. Could any one tell me if a trailer hitch from a roadstar fit a 07 venture or a 09 tour deluxe.Any advice would help
  19. I need some advice. About a year and a half ago, I got my 1st tattoo. It of course has meaning to me. Its my kids initials linked together chiseled out of stone. Anyway the other day I added to it. A stone circle seperated into 3 pieces, with the kids names written in each section. The names dont overpower the whole thing. I like the way it turned out, but cant make up my mind if I need to add some color, or just shade some of the middle some how. Maybe just leave it alone, as it is. Since it took me a year and a half to add to it, I'm just not gonna jump in and add a bunch of color etc. So I'll probly just let it go and not get into a hurry I guess What do you think.......
  20. Due to a recent and somewhat unexpected situation, I find myself compelled to pass this advice on to all who may be interested. It is advice I give you based on personal experience. TAKE IT and live by it so you don't end up where I am today. First. Prepare for your future. Save for your retirement. Save it in such a way that NOBODY else can touch it. When you get to my age and you realize the impact this has on the rest of your life ... you will be so glad you took this advice. Second. DO NOT ever be "Mr Good Guy" in matters pertaining to an ex or soon to be ex-spouse. PROTECT YOURSELF legally and financially. TAKE CARE of YOUR INTERESTS. Let them worry about theirs. I say these things to you for your benefit. I wish someone had drilled them into my head when I was younger.
  21. This is hopefully the last thing I have to do before getting this bike finally on the road. Looking for advice so I don't remove anything unnecessary. What all do I have to remove to get all the plug wires changed out? Thanks.
  22. I need to replace my air filter and am looking for advice. I find I can get a K&N filter for less than the OEM filter, or an Emgo replacement for less than that. Any bad experience from using K&N as far as flowing too much air for the stock set up? Any bad experience with the emgo? Thanks for any advice.
  23. I have an 83 Venture standard. Would like some ideas about adding some stuff to it. Something like maybe a radio or cb. I purchased this in Feb of this year and put on about 4000 miles on it. Runs great. Plan on changing oil before storing for the winter but have to do it outside as no place else to work on it. Did put a new rear tire on this year so will be ready for spring. Thnaks for any and all advice. Kirk
  24. A doctor saw his 92-year-old patient out one day with a very, very attractive, very much younger woman on his arm. The old man said to his doctor, “Hey, doc, thanks for the great advice.” And the doctor said, “What advice was that?” The old man said, “You told me to get a hot mama and be cheerful.” Doctor said, “No, I said you have a heart murmur; be careful.”
  25. Guys, I have owned my RSTD for just under a month. I owned and rode lots of enduro bikes as a young man, have had Kawasaki, Yamaha, and H-D road bikes. At 55 years old, I thought that I knew how to ride albeit it has been a few years since I owned my last. I wrote to you about the whine in the bike, at which MPH and in which gear. There was a boat load of advice about allowing the engine to wind out a bit. One poster responded that he never uses 5th gear until 75 mph. I should have just listened. Yesterday my wife and I took about a 4 hour ride. I just gave way to trust in your advice. I ran along in 3rd gear up until just over 40mph. I used 4th the rest of the time except when we traveled on the 4 lane turnpike at 65 - 75 mph and then used 5th. It was one of the most comfortable and good feeling rides I have ever taken on a bike. That little engine just seems to cook right along just as happy as can be at those rpm's & wheel speed. Thanks for the advice. OH, and by letting it rev a little more in each gear, almost no whining whatsoever. Thanks for the great advice. R.
