Starting to get some slipping in 5th gear. The bike has 42,500 miles and it feels like I am riding into a heavy wind. Kinda a pause type feel while at speed. Also when I get on throttle in 5th it rpms up then takes off. But only in top gear. What do you guys think? You know..now that I think about it, I never noticed it until I went from Mobil 20w-50 synthetic to the Mobil Racing 4T 10w-40...could that be an issue? Thanks guys.

I had noted a couple of weeks ago that I was having a shifting problem. I was having a problem with the bike not staying in 1st and 5th gear. I could shift it into 1st gear and it would come back out unless I held the shifter down until I put it under a load. I was having the same problem with 5th and also having a problem with finding neutral. I suspected I was having a détente problem and that was what it turned out to be. The spring that pulls in the détente roller arm was broken. I had a spare and was able to replace it by taking off the clutch side cover and down beside the clutch basket I could get to it. Some long needle nose pliers and I was good to go. I wanted to post this as this is not a problem I have heard the Venture having. It appears that the spring was just worn enough to finally break. Gears 1 thru 4 seem fine but when I get into 5th gear and try to accelerate it seems to be slipping, If I'm at around 45mph and start to accelerate 5th will start winding and accelerate very slowly. If cruise is on and I'm going up a hill it will kick out the cruisse and I need to downshift. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Venture Friends I am a newbie to Venture rider I just bought a 1987 Venture 1300_ I bought it cheap and of course Has its problems . All the diaphyrams in carbs are busted no problems with handling this problems. MY BIG CONCERN IS THE TRANSMISSION-'THE REAR WHEEL WAS JUST STUCK ON . I REMOVE WHEEL TO TEST DIFFERENTIAL ETC--FOUND LOTS OF PLAY IN TRANS. I COULD MOVE DRIVE SHAFT APPROX 90 degrees back and forth except for 5th gear in which was nor mal I drain oil no signs of metal in oil . My question what should back lash be when rotating driveshaft- WHY IS IT SO MUCH PLAY IN 1 thru 4 but. 5th to me is nornmal Thanks. Jim C. Carson City. Nevada:bacp

What is the top speed in each gear with factory rev limiter. I don't have a tach on this bike which is a bit aggravating. I've read a bit on here and people complain about the gearing on these bikes. Mine has plenty of power in 4th and 5th. If I'm over 50mph I'm in 5th. I am the third owner of this bike and it has 84000 miles on it. I believe it was still on the original clutch. It was in good shape when I replaced it with upgraded spring. I figured I'd do it all since I could get my Yamaha parts at cost. If i'm running over 60 I just twist my wrist to pass. I know it has K&N filters but don't know what else hase been done. It had some slash out pipes that I think were Highway Hawks but not sure because there were no markings on them. I found a set of factory pipes with tips with about 2000 miles on them. I put them on and like how the bike cruises at higher speeds now. With other pipes it sounded like the bike was overtaching. I haven't checked speed with gps yet but it buries the 120 on digital spedo and does it fairly quickly. I can bury in both 4th and 5th. I've learned it doesn't like to go around turns quite that fast though. Guess that is where my Magna spoiled me.

Hey Ya'll! This is a fantastic site! this is a long thread to give a little background on my situation, and its raining so i have nothing better to do......sorry... I am a new rstd owner and a fairly new rider. I hadn't ridden for 25 years when i bought a vtx1300 last november and racked up 2500 miles over the winter (not crazy mileage, but that's a lot of 50 mile rides). brrrr!! but loved it! I went to get new rubber on the front of the VTX and was tooling around the Honda shop looking at bikes while I waited. I sat on a used '05 RSTD that i had seen many times at the shop and just sat there in awe thinking, "some day..." Well, much to my surprise the asking price was way less than i expected. It had everything on it that i wanted on my VTX so I traded up!! The day i went to pick it up, i fired it up and started to walk around the bike admiring how beautiful it was and getting really fired up! Then i noticed a gas leak from under the tank- kinda flowing off the petcock and dripping down on the cylinder vents. Abort mission, up on lift, tank off, let's figure this out. They said that the bike had been sitting and needed some gaskets replaced and also floats in the carbs. "it didn't do that when we tested it", "this happens when it sits for awhile", etc. Ok. get'r fixed. back on the vtx... Ok cool. Go back 5 days later and it is ready to go. Of course, it is not a v-twin so i had to get used to the differences in torque (i guess?) and running the V4 at higher rpms. When i got it out on the highway and started to crank the thottle it was not responding and I was having trouble getting it over 65mph?? wtf? Well, part of this was that i was shifting into overdrive (5th) at too low a speed and did not realize that 4th gear had that type of range to it, BUT OD was doing NOTHING?? I had the throttle pegged and NOTHING. I returned to the shop and they rode it- everything is fine. Put it on the Dyno, everything is fine. Ok, rode it again. NOPE, everthing is not fine, and returned to the shop and told them this can't be right? I only got 100 miles to a tank of gas??!?!?!?!. The mechanic rode it and came back and said you are not crazy, 5th gear is just dumping fuel into the carbs. Its not getting enough air. The mechanic said that the filters needed to be replaced as they were probably soaked with gas and it was limiting the airflow. it ran fine 1-4 but sputtered in 5th. Long story short, they put K&N's in it for me, the mechanic took it out and said all good and he had it over 100mph. It WAS noticeably better. loved it. nice power. learned to run higher rpms, pretty much never get it into 5th gear around town. daily rider. frickin' LOVE it!!! Also started to realize what a big friggin' windshield does to power?? never rode a bike with a windshied?? took it off one day and i was like- holy sh!t, this is the way it is supposed to run!! still though, no long highway miles... 1200 miles later, I was riding down toward Myrtle yesterday and the frickin wind was insane. Got the big windshield on and I am desperately trying to maintain speed and i am just getting slowed down and pushed back from 60 to 52, then hit an air pocket and speed up to 65. I am pogoing back and forth and starting to get irratated. Finally i just hammer the throttle in 4th to 65 and shift up to OD, and it just bogs down and sends me back down to 50... so... They question after this long frickin history of my life IS: Is it typical for the windshield to cause such powerloss in windy situations?? If so, why dosesn't the bike have enuff power to push thru the wind? Is there something wrong with carbs or an adjustment that needs to be made?? what the heck should it do?? if i have to take the windshield off to go 75 mph, doesn't that defeat the purpose?? I wanna ride out west this summer! This just doesn't seem right?? I appreciate your time in answering some questions for this newbie:depressed:! educate me VentureRider.org!!!!! Thanks! Pete

OK all you super mechanics. I found a 1996 RSTD for $2500 on craigslist. It looks real nice in the pictures and only has 24,000 miles. Here's the bad news. He says it needs 4th and 5th gear replaced and the carbs tuned. The carbs are not a problem for me. Is there any known issues that would cause 4th and 5th not to work (linkage?, shift fork?), and how hard is it (whats involved) to do the repair myself. Would I have to remove the engine or can I do the repair on the bike? The bike has a lot of safety chrome I could swap over to my bike and maybe sell this one for a little profit if I can do the work. Let me know what you think.

This is how my day is going.... Truck went to a idle and that's it.. I was on my way to the dealer to get the A/C fixed for the 5th time.... It looks great, but I can't keep it out of the shop....

83 vr trans issue
crossedthreads1 posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
left work today laid the bike down on right side very easy while in 1st gear probably 7mph I pick it up, shake it off, ride home. I no longer have 4th and 5th gears . the bike shifts 1,2,3, and that's it. Shifter feels just like it is in top gear.Everything feels normal it just only a 3 speed now. Anyone hear of this before . thanks -
My 2008 RSTD has about 18K miles and has a whine mosting in 5th gear and most pronounced below 50 mph. I have been around early Willys Jeeps for most of my life and the noise happily reminds me of an early Jeep transfer case, particularly with an aftermarket overdrive is added. Mine really isn't all that loud, even with the stock mufflers. My question is; should I be concerned at all i.e. asking the dealer about changing the clutch basket or is this just a characteristic of the motorcycle and I should love it for what it is just like I love my old Jeeps? I am hoping it is the latter. R.

wHAT SPEED do you run your trike in 5th gear? It seems like mine will run 45 in 5th without problem.IT WOULDN'T do it on two wheels.Does anyone think it would get better gas mileage if I woul run it in a lower gear
-
Wondering if this is 'normal'. At 75(speedo), 5th gear (or 65 speedo 4th gear), if you lay your hand on the tank (or squeeze with knees) I can feel a pretty good buzz. I can also feel it in the floorboards and the hand grips. The bike is an 06 rstd with 6,000 miles. New rear tire(E3). If I pull the clutch at speed the buzz completely dissappears, so I'm thinking it can't be tires...has to be engine. Also, If I am running a little slower in 5th...say about 65, gentle cruise, there is a light thumping/ticking in the passenger seat and backrest...it is not a fast as the buzz but faster than wheel spin. I know all about letting these engines rev, and have of course felt the heavy vibration/shaking when I try to do too much acceleration in 5th or 4th....the buzz isn't this....the pillion 'ticking' does seem to be at the same frequency as the lugging feeling you can get in too high a gear...but it is there even when holding at steady speed(just less pronounced). Have net yet tried sea-foam, new plugs or carb sync (don't know if PO did it before me either). Engine runs so well I did not think any of these was indicated....could be wrong though. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

First I need to say that I had the clutch slippage issue in 4th and 5th. Also on a slight uphill grade, I could not hold 5th gear at 50 mph. It would shudder and buck causing to me to downshift. I orderes his clutch spring upgrade. WOW! This thing should be listed under performance upgrades! I feel like I have more power than before. I can even hold 5th gear on the same grade and accelerate! It is almost like a brand new bike. If you haven't done this yet, do it! Best purchase I've made yet! Just for giggles, Mine is a 97 RSTC with 63,XXX on the odometer. Second owner and was prob not taken care of to well by the PO. Thanks Skydoc_17!

Is the clutch spring on my rstd the same as a 1st gen? If so it has 44000 miles on it and will slip a bit if I roll on the throttle in 4th or 5th gear. can I just go with a stronger spring like I did with my 89vr?

OK, this is pretty much a no-brainer. Since Dairy Queen seems to be the "Official Pitstop" for just about everyone on this Forum, I hereby suggest that we proclaim next Thursday, August 5th, 2010, as the "1st-Ever Official DQ Day for VR.org". Now, why would I suggest such a thing? It's simple, really. DQ is donating at least one dollar for every Blizzard purchased on August 5th to the Children's Miracle Network. We all like children; we all like DQ; and we all like Blizzards. Feed your face and help the children all at the same time. What could be better? Please click this link for more info and please participate next Thursday: http://www.miracletreatday.com/ Thank You! TERRY

Everyone, first I'm new to the forum! I just bought a 96 Royal Star a few months back. I have loved the bike, but have one problem that has come up. The needle in the carbs were sticking and I was losing fuel so I gave them a good seafoam bath (thanks for everyone that posted this tip in previous posts). That stopped the leak, but now the engine seems to be lugging, it is especially noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, is there anything that I should try. I did replace the spark plugs about three days before the carbs decided to gum up. Thanks for all of the help!

Well, I did my 4000 mile oil change the other day. I went from the Yamalube to the Rotella T6 along with a Pure One Purolator Oil filter. So my oil weight went from 10w-40 down to 5w-40 and a full synthetic. I also added about 8oz of MotorKote. My whine is still audible at low speeds, but in 4th and 5th gear the whine is TOTALLY gone now. :-) I am very happy with it so far...so we'll see if it gets even better over time...but now my MOTORCYCLE sounds like a MOTORCYCLE in 4th and 5th gear!! My "84 VR has the dreaded 2nd gear issue that's slowly getting worse. It's to the point that just keeping up with traffic leaving a light will cause it to jump out. It's a sidecar rig and 2nd is really handy to get the tugboat rolling. I just lucked into a trans gearset out of a '89 VR. It's my understanding that it the same as the '84 except it has some updated parts including the thrust washer. I didn't get the driven middle gear and I realize they should be kept as a matched set. No forks or shift drum either. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4511886358_c30c1708fa_b.jpg I'm debating how to proceed. Do it just put this split thrust washer on in my 84 and call it done? Do I swap in this entire gearset? If I do that do I have to swap the middle gear to keep a matched set? I'm assuming that I would have to re-shim everything them too. Doesn't the worn split washer affect middle gear backlash? If so it would seem that it's pretty forgiving. Should I swap this 2nd gear wheel and 5th gear wheel onto the 84 shaft? I assume you should swap over the the 5th gear pinion too since it meshes with the 5th gear wheel, but I've changed many automotive trans gears w/o replace the mating one without issue. Is undercutting the dogs necessary or is it just a bit of insurance? The answers to some of these questions may become self evident when I get it apart. Any other magic I need to know? I know that's a lot of questions but I'm trying to gather as much input as possible before I open her up.

with 2 up should I run it in 5th or 4th?

just bought a 07 RSV and am wondering about rpms at highway speeds. Seems to lug along in 5th at 60 and barley smooths out at 65. Should I still be in 4th at 60?

I recently bought a 1983 venture and when I test drove it it was pretty snowy so I never had a good chance to run through all of the gears. Later on I found that It wouldn't shift into 4th or 5th gear. It's like they just aren't there. It's my first bike so I am pretty new to this. I'm hoping to have it up and running for spring time. Anyone ever have this problem? I appreciate any help Trent

Well, I guess I gotta go to the big city (New York, New York) for 4th of July. Mochalady needs to show up for a wedding on July the 2nd. We plan on flying out of Texas on the 29th-30th of June and fly back home about the 6th-7th of July. If anyone is familiar with the Islip/Babylon area we will need to find a car rental and the best way to get around. The cheapest way in and out is via JFK. I looked at MacArthur and the price just about doubles!! I hope to visit the WTC memorial on the 5th and pretty much stay around Babylon or suburbs the rest of the time. If it was just me I would iron-butt my 1st Gen and have a blast doing it. Thanks in advance folks JB

OK...it's not a serious problem and not even one that I'm going to spend a lot of time trying to track down. I am almost sure though that my cruise once worked in 4th and 5th gear. For a long time now though, it only works in 5th gear. I would seldom have a need to use it in 4th gear anyway but am curious as to whether or not I am just wrong in thinking that it used to work in 4th or if something is wrong. I briefly looked at the service manual yesterday and didn't immediately recognize where it gets the signal for what gear you are in. I'm thinking that maybe it comes from the TCI and if so, maybe it stopped working when I installed the Dyna3000. I could put the old TCI back on and test it but don't know that it's important enough for me to go to the trouble.
