So, even though I'm still shopping I'm also getting ready for as soon as I find my new RSV. I've been reading the owner's manual, (not really something I normally do, but I'm rather excited about the Venture) and came across a couple of things I don't understand..... Choke "The time necessary for starter (choke) use depends upon the ambient temperature. Temperatures above 10 °C (50 °F) require about 7 seconds of starter (choke) use and temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) require about 35 seconds with the starter (choke) turned on, then about 2.5 minutes with the starter (choke) in the halfway position." My last bike was fuel injected, but I wanted to ask if these times are really about right? I know some bikes need more choke than others, some can even start without any choke (I had a RoadStar that almost never needed any choke at all), but these just seem like a lot of time...especially the "35 seconds" of idling at full choke. Is this really about normal? If so, isn't that hard on the engine? Shifting points/speeds Shift up points: 1st → 2nd: 20 km/h (13 mi/h) 2nd → 3rd: 30 km/h (19 mi/h) 3rd → 4th: 40 km/h (25 mi/h) 4th → 5th: 50 km/h (31 mi/h) Shift down points: 5th → 4th: 25 km/h (16 mi/h) 4th → 3rd: 25 km/h (16 mi/h) 3rd → 2nd: 25 km/h (16 mi/h) 2nd → 1st: 25 km/h (16 mi/h) Ok, this one has me REALLY confused. Are these speeds even close to being right? I can't believe that they are, and so I don't really understand why the manual gives them??

What is the top speed in each gear with factory rev limiter. I don't have a tach on this bike which is a bit aggravating. I've read a bit on here and people complain about the gearing on these bikes. Mine has plenty of power in 4th and 5th. If I'm over 50mph I'm in 5th. I am the third owner of this bike and it has 84000 miles on it. I believe it was still on the original clutch. It was in good shape when I replaced it with upgraded spring. I figured I'd do it all since I could get my Yamaha parts at cost. If i'm running over 60 I just twist my wrist to pass. I know it has K&N filters but don't know what else hase been done. It had some slash out pipes that I think were Highway Hawks but not sure because there were no markings on them. I found a set of factory pipes with tips with about 2000 miles on them. I put them on and like how the bike cruises at higher speeds now. With other pipes it sounded like the bike was overtaching. I haven't checked speed with gps yet but it buries the 120 on digital spedo and does it fairly quickly. I can bury in both 4th and 5th. I've learned it doesn't like to go around turns quite that fast though. Guess that is where my Magna spoiled me.

I've been working on the 83, the one my brother has been using. When it got here, it had only had the front brake working, a weak alternator, a big oil leak on the left side, and a slipping clutch. plus it had lots of other problems. The last 3 months, I've been working on it, and after fixing everything else and then rebuilding the rear master cylinder I finally took it for a good ride. Another problem has shown up. Sometimes it's real hard to downshift, especially from 4th to 3rd. When this happens, you have to let the clutch out a little and then it'll go. Before I thought of letting the clutch out a little to load 4th gear a little, I thought I might be limping home in 4th. I suppose I should mention that this thing has 140,000 miles on it and at 82K I fixed 2nd gear, but 3 years ago when I last saw it it shifted OK I should also mention that my brother isn't too gentle on the old girl---he likes to powershift, and I've seen him pushing hard on the shift lever. To fix the clutch, I installed a Skydoc spring and full inside clutch plate kit. Now the clutch doesn't slip and it does seem to be disengaging all the way when the lever is pulled in. In this project, I replaced the slave cylnder, and replaced all of the brake fluid. It's clean, fresh and completely bled. The clutch lever feels good, and is engaging at the correct point. When I did 2nd gear (10-12 years ago), I replaced the shift drum and 2nd gear, as per the Yammie service bulletin. I don't think I replaced the 4th gear shift fork, but I did replace 1st and 2nd gear shift forks I've checked the shift linkage----the hole in the left engine cover that the shift linkage shaft passes through is worn a bit, so it's sloppy and the pivot for the shift lever is a bit worn also, however there is no play in the linkage inside of the gearbox itself. I oiled the shift linkage and took it for another ride last night, and it was a lot better, but not correct. If I wanted to shift down from 5 to 3rd, sometimes I had to let the clutch out a little to get it to go from 4th to 3rd. BTW, neutral is a bit of a pain to get into. If you're moving, it'll go from 2nd to neutral fine. If you're stopped and in first, you have to let the clutch out a little briefly like you're taking off, and if you are pulling up on the shift lever when you pull the clutch back in, it'll go to neutral. I'm wondering if my brother didn't bend a shift lever because it feels as if the shift drum is hard to turn. Or, is it because of the 140K and almost 30 years, just worn out? I know that several riders that have heel/toe shifters installed have had something break....does anybody know what they break? The bike is rideable, but if something in the shift linkage is damaged and lets go, it could leave my brother stranded. Any ideas??? Frank D.

I live in Georgia (gainesville area) and my brother who I have not seen in almost two years lives in Michigan. I got a text from him on the 4th saying to make surer I was off on Thursday and Friday because he would see me later that night. WOW! What a great surprise. Come to find out, he and his wife were on the bike and made the 780 mile trip down in one day. After mapping out some trips, and after some much needed rest, we set out for one heck of a great ride. We rode the blue ridge parkway, all around the foothills in Helen, GA and Blairsville Etc and made it all the way up to the Virginia line. The scenery was wonderful and since I have lived here for almost 11 years now, this was the first time I had ever riden with my brother. What an awesome time. Took many, many pics which I wll upload soon and I hope to be ridiong mine up to michigan in fall. Although, I don't think I'll plan to do it in one day. I of course was riding my '86 venture and he was on his '04 venture. We turned some heads and got penty of compliments when we stopped. just thought I'd share our good time. Maybe some of you guys are close here in Georgia and week and plan a meet and eat. Take care, Jay

Brenda Yohman Frick, I'll mention that to him. Problem is when it's cold, runs like a beast. However when it warms up he loses power and can't get over 50 in 4th. I'm thinking Fuel filter? or maybe water in the tank? (seafoam)

Wild 4th parade. http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/161363625.html This happened almost right in front of me. Fortunately it did happen right in front of the paramedics. Later that night the fireworks were canceled mid show after they started a fire. We are in severe drought conditions here.

Sorry I forgot to add on my last post about the gear boxes on the Ventures. Reading through the old threads, I can see some people report gear box whines. Do they have a fault with this, do the gear boxes or 4th gear break up? Also can you advise what gear box & engine oil is the best to use. Many, many thanks if you can help.

OK all you super mechanics. I found a 1996 RSTD for $2500 on craigslist. It looks real nice in the pictures and only has 24,000 miles. Here's the bad news. He says it needs 4th and 5th gear replaced and the carbs tuned. The carbs are not a problem for me. Is there any known issues that would cause 4th and 5th not to work (linkage?, shift fork?), and how hard is it (whats involved) to do the repair myself. Would I have to remove the engine or can I do the repair on the bike? The bike has a lot of safety chrome I could swap over to my bike and maybe sell this one for a little profit if I can do the work. Let me know what you think.

Officially, Mike and I have been homeless the last 18 mons. However we've spent the time couch surfing and paying our way, though griping alot at the circumstances it's put us in. I'm not asking anyone here for money or a place to stay so let us be clear about this. What I am asking is help locating a place to live. With room mates if needed. Ist preference would be somewhere in Central Georgia because Mike has a job and goes to school here. However we can relocate if we must, we'll just need help. Usually one turns to family in times like this. However Mike's family aren't able to help us right now, nor do we wish to worry and burden his Dad so soon after his heart attack and bypass surgery. So I'm turning to the next closest thing to family. You guys! I'm sitting here numb screaming inside not this again. This will be the 4th move in the last 18mons! I know y'all can brainstorm ideas as a group. Technically we'd qualify for low income housing but the waits are years long and I don't have that kind of time. I have 45 days from today to find a place in which to move. Please help me.

Took off a bit earlier than usual today on my RSV and the temps were a bit low (Around 52 F.). Anyway after about 3 or 4 miles, I passed a cage and decided to distance myself from it quickly. So I cranked on some throttle at about 125 kph (about 78 mph) in 4th (Well, a pretty hard crank!) and the engine revved with little acceleration! Clutch slip!! I eased off then ran it more easily to around 140 kph (About 87mph) and shifted into 5th. I then gave it a good shot of throttle and, sure enough, it slipped again. On the way back, I ran it to 120 kph and when I cranked the throttle in 4th there was either no clutch slip or so little that I couldn't detect it. Now I have read the posts regarding the weak clutch spring and adding a plate, but this slipping when barely warmed up and not slipping when fully warmed up kind of throws me. Am I dealing with just a weak spring or is something else going on here? Any ideas? Andy

Left work and got on it up to 4th and 50-60 MPH and remembered I didn't strap my helmet. Just took my hands off and let her coast while I did the quick strap, kept missing slot. When she slowed down, I'm guessing around 35, she started something like a tank slap. Scared the heck out of me when I grabed the controls to accel out of it. I'm guessing in 4th the engine started to lug a little to start it??? Anyway, don't try this at home boys and girls, I'm a professional - idiot!

left work today laid the bike down on right side very easy while in 1st gear probably 7mph I pick it up, shake it off, ride home. I no longer have 4th and 5th gears . the bike shifts 1,2,3, and that's it. Shifter feels just like it is in top gear.Everything feels normal it just only a 3 speed now. Anyone hear of this before . thanks -
So who's going to Sturgis this year? Myself and my group will be staying at Glencoe again this year in the Motorcycle-Only camping area, right next to where the sportbike rider got killed last year. Departing Amarillo area on or about the 3rd or 4th, arriving on or about the 4th or 5th of August, departing around the 13th. Sure would be fun to break in some newbies! ( I mean show you around...) Anyone interested in a meet-n-eat in the Beautiful Black Hills, post here!

OK...I have read some other threads, but I am hoping for an easier fix than some that I have found. (I am lazy and want to ride not wrench:)) I laid my bike down today, I was going up a driveway with huge ruts (ditches really) and my front tire slide into one and I slowly laid the bike down. (in my defense it was really steep and the ruts were like ditches). After recovering from my embarrassment (well mostly) I had a crack faring piece (which is no problem to fix...been there done that). I start home sad but knowing I could fix what I broke..UNTIL I tried to shift into 4th gear. I can shift from first to third (and into neutral) with no problems at all, but trying to go into 4th doesn't happen...it is like trying shift up again if you are in 5th (don't ask me who I know that) It was a fairly gentle lay down the damage to the fairing is more due to the weight of the bike and than the impact. So any idea on what the problem might be? And what I am looking at to fix it? I haven't opened anything up yet... won't have time till Monday, so I am looking for ideas for easy and quick fixes.

Wondering if this is 'normal'. At 75(speedo), 5th gear (or 65 speedo 4th gear), if you lay your hand on the tank (or squeeze with knees) I can feel a pretty good buzz. I can also feel it in the floorboards and the hand grips. The bike is an 06 rstd with 6,000 miles. New rear tire(E3). If I pull the clutch at speed the buzz completely dissappears, so I'm thinking it can't be tires...has to be engine. Also, If I am running a little slower in 5th...say about 65, gentle cruise, there is a light thumping/ticking in the passenger seat and backrest...it is not a fast as the buzz but faster than wheel spin. I know all about letting these engines rev, and have of course felt the heavy vibration/shaking when I try to do too much acceleration in 5th or 4th....the buzz isn't this....the pillion 'ticking' does seem to be at the same frequency as the lugging feeling you can get in too high a gear...but it is there even when holding at steady speed(just less pronounced). Have net yet tried sea-foam, new plugs or carb sync (don't know if PO did it before me either). Engine runs so well I did not think any of these was indicated....could be wrong though. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Weather must be great all over the world ....... Nothing stirring in this place ..... Ride safe my friends ....... Stuck at home doing child care ...... Really hurts too, bike is full of gas and pointed towards the door ..... Going to take my 4th nap now ...... To make it worse, three bikes just went slowly by the house - riders laughing like crazy! Hey you bikers, quit riding by, you hurting me!

Everyone, first I'm new to the forum! I just bought a 96 Royal Star a few months back. I have loved the bike, but have one problem that has come up. The needle in the carbs were sticking and I was losing fuel so I gave them a good seafoam bath (thanks for everyone that posted this tip in previous posts). That stopped the leak, but now the engine seems to be lugging, it is especially noticeable in 4th and 5th gears, is there anything that I should try. I did replace the spark plugs about three days before the carbs decided to gum up. Thanks for all of the help!
