A couple of years ago Condor wrote that the difference between the carb diaphragm slides from a 1200 and a 1300 was one had a larger vent hole. It appears to me that that is the case -- and the vent hole on the 1300 is noticeably larger. I am replacing one cracked slide housing (the black plastic part) on a 1200, so the question is can I use a 1300 slide without any problem? I also thought about using JB Weld and re- drilling the hole to the 1200 size. Has anyone done this? Last two questions - is there any place to buy 1200 slides cheap? If not does anyone have one 1200 slide (even one in pieces that I can reglue) that they care to part with?

I have a 1983 Venture XVZ 1200 with 52,000 miles on it. Last year for no reason it would loose power and die without warning. I took it to two separate mechanics but by the time they were able to look at it the darn thing started and ran fine. They attempted to replicate the problem but without success. I did a little research and figured it was some sort of vapor lock. I checked the roller valve on the right side of the bike and found it was stuck. I replaced it in December 2012 and it ran flawlessly since. Last weekend I was riding in the IBA SS 1K and after 100 milesin the middle of the night it just quit! I had just fueled two miles and 5 minutes earlier when it stopped. Again it sounded like a vapor lock. It simply lost power and died! I opened the fuel cap, no excess pressure. I checked the roller valve and it was functioning like new. I ended up running the battery down trying to restart it. The night was cool and clear. I spent 7 hours on the side of the road waiting for assistance. The following morning after a jump start and a small squirt of starting fluid the bike fired and ran like there was no problem. I can no longer trust the bike on out of town trips which really bums me out! Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem? I'm not a mechanic, more like a parts changer if you know what I mean. Any help would be appreciated.

Arm Rest 1200 vs 1300
GolfVenture posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are they the same...Interchangeable... -
I'm new here so please bare with me... I'm looking at a 1984 venture 1200 .He is wanting 1100.00 for it.. Here is what he has told me : It has 33,000 miles on it , the air suspension is fully functional , has all body pieces except for passenger foot rests .. tires have less than 100 miles on them ... It needs a new front caliper and pads , clutch slave cylinder , carbs need to be cleaned/tuned to run properly... He said it hasn't ran since last November. I have never worked on a motorcycle except for routine maintenance (2007 v-max).. I have work on my own cars since I was 16 I'm 43 now. So I do have some mechanical ability.. So are these parts very expensive? Would they be hard to replace ? Is it something that can be done without specialty tools? All opinion and responses welcome . Thanks chuck

I have a friend that has a 1200 Goldwing and he has problem bleeding his rear brakes. He Bleeds some of the fluid, fills the fluid up and closes the bleed valve and resourivore lid. When he pumps the rear brake peddle he has no break pressure. The break peddle goes all the way to the bottom with several pumps. Does it over again with the same result. Any suggestion?

A guy wants to trade either a 2003 Harley Sportster 1200 Anniversary with 16000 miles or a 2009 V-star 950 with 2000 miles for my 91 Trans Am. I am leaning towards the V-star if we made the trade. Seems to be worth more. Any thoughts?

This is on my '84...Once it gets warmed up,it wants to bogg/stall out. When I come to a stop and crack the throttle..it'll act like it's out of gas. It always starts back up though. It never does this until I've gone about 20/30 miles. If I keep it reved up,say 1200 plus RPM it won't stall. It almost acts like you've got the choke on???? It just started doing this all of a sudden.I've run about a half can of sea-foam thur it in hopes that would cure it....no luck.I appreciate your help.

This summer me and my two sons took a trip from Sweden, through Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. We visited cities/villages as Fussen (and saw the famous http://www.neuschwanstein.de/englisch/palace/index.htm , you can see where Disney got his inspiration drawing castles!), Riva de Garda (http://www.tripadvisor.ie/LocationPhotos-g194883-Riva_Del_Garda_Lake_Garda_Trentino_Alto_Adige.html) etc. We also rode over the Grossglockner pass (http://www.grossglockner.at/en/) and it was snowing up there! My VXZ 1200 (-84) functioned flawless except for a bit of trouble with the carging of the battery. I was lucky and found oxide on the connector from the generator. After removing the oxide it was back in business! In total 4100 km and great fun!

Does the 1200 and 1300 share the same carbs? I guess that the jets etc are different but is the rest identical?

Can someone explain to me in layman's terms what the relationship is between these three and other pertinent output info? I.e., what is more relevant, Hp, torque, compression ratio, bore and stroke, displacement? Or(/and) does this relate to driving style and area (e.g. Florida Flat or Colorado curvy) thanks Oh, I'm wondering 'cause I was surfing the web and found what turns out to be a 1200, 65 Hp engine with I think it said 71ft/lbs (R1200CLC) and since I haul a sidecar and would like to continue doing so, is this something I should not consider or is it a possibility

Hi All, I have an 83 Venture Royale, with an 86 1300 in it. I also have a parts bike, 83 VR with 1200. The 1200 has a plain airbox lid, while my other one (1300) has a lid with an apparatus on the front part, that has a 4 pin square connector with 3 wires on it, and a separate spade terminal wire. It also has a red LED which is lit at idle, but when the engine is revved up, the LED goes out. What is this apparatus, and is it for the 86 engine, or something that was originally on the 83. This bike also has the Markland cruise control, which isn't working right now, but that is another post...?? I am just curious as to what this device is? Size is about 3-4 in. wide by 2in. deep

Hi Guys, I love my venture but I'm looking at a 85 1200 goldwing. Can anyone give me some tips of things to be concerned about? I know every bike has it's own set of common problems....some of which can get very expensive ! Thanks John

OK all, I have the beast on the road (without plastic - see pic). I love the de-linked brakes, but, I will probably replace the long rubber hose (master-to-coupler) with a braided line to firm the front brakes up a little. The 1300 engine with Vmax cams and springs is a real hoot. The power is impressive! I need to do some fine-tuning on the carbs. They are from my 1200 and all I have done is to add 1.6mm spacers on the needles. It starts easy and runs good. The idle seems to wander a bit and I have not checked the mpg. Next - PAINT

Correct me if I am wrong. ..But I believe you can put a 1300 1st gen rear drive unit on a 1200. So, IF YOU had a 1300 1st gen. and had a chance on buying low mileage 1200 rear w/shaft and swing arm complete at a really cheap price , that you personally inspected . Would you buy it for your aging 1300 to keep as a spare???

Does anyone know the procedure to split upper & lower fork tubes on a 2008 XL 1200 Custom? My son has one and he wants to powder coat lower fork tubes. A clip from service manual would be very helpful. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT2684s.jpg

First of all I want to thank all the members of Venturerider.org. After 20 years of not riding a motorcycle I finally decided to start riding again. I wanted a full dress cruising machine and started looking at what was out there. I ran across a very nice 1983 Yamaha venture. I loved the look of the bike so I started researching it. I came across Venturerider very quickly and read a ton of information. After all the reading I purchased the bike. I did know 2nd gear was out when I purchased the bike and understood what was required to fix it. After riding the bike I decided I wanted 2nd gear to work. Again I read everything I could find on the subject and also everything about what engines were affected and when Yamaha corrected this gear issue. I also looked into what was involved in swapping out a 1200 engine with the newer 1300. I found only a small amount of information on the subject of engine swap. I then found a 1988 Venture 1300cc engine with only 30k miles for $350 bucks. With this find I decided it was worth trying to swap engines no matter haw much modification was required. Here is what I found out about putting an ’88 1300cc engine into a ’83 1200cc bike, Fit - the engine bolts up perfectly. Exhaust - the 1200 exhaust fits perfectly. YICS - the 1200 YICS chamber is not needed on the 1300 so leave it off Carburetors - the 1200 carburetors appear to work perfectly. I only have a few hundred miles on it now so I will continue to monitor this. Radiator - The ’83 radiator lower hose fitting is weak. It came off with the hose. I could have had it repaired at a radiator shop but I found a good ’88 radiator for 40 bucks. The ’88 has this area reinforced. Thermostat - It appears the thermostat for all Ventures are no longer available from Yamaha and I was surprised to fine no information on this on Venturerider. After extensive research I found only one thread on another site that indicated that the Napa Parts thermostat number 156 will fit like the original and works just fine. I compared the Napa 156 with the original and decided to use it. The original has a small vent hole with a weight to help bleed the air out when filling the cooling system. If it makes you fill better you can drill a small 1/32” hole to match the original. I chose not to do this. The cooling system filled fine and works perfectly. The temperature gauge now stays right in the middle. Starter – the 1200 starter fits and works perfectly. Electrical – You will need an electrical schematic for the 1200 and the 1300 to get it right. The generator lead connector and the pick up lead connector fit perfectly. The Neutral indicator wire for the 1200 bike is a single black and yellow wire. The 1300 engine has a multi wire plug. In this plug there is a ski blue wire that is the neutral indicator. I made the single wire from the bike into a spade connector and inserted it into the ski blue slot on the multi wire connector. I then sealed this complete plug with shrink tube and electrical tape to keep the dirt out. The oil level indicator connects to the only singe wire coming from the 1300 engine. I did not take the time to find out what the other wires in the 1300 multi conductor are for. I did not really care because my ’83 doesn’t require them. After swapping the engine I balanced the carbs and cleaned and adjusted everything. The bike and engine combination are fantastic – I love this bike and can not wait to put many miles under its wheels. Thanks again to all the members at Venturerider.org.
