This has probably been asked before, but.... I have recently purchased a 99 RSV with very low miles. I had to do a bunch of work to get it road worthy. I have put around 500 miles on it in the last week and have noticed that the speedometer is off approximately 10% (VERY ANNOYING, I like to know my exact speed without a calculation). When I meter the gas mileage running mostly freeway speeds 75-80mph which meters 80-85 or more on the speedometer I am getting 38 - 40 mph. Calculate the 10% odometer error that makes 34-35 mpg. Does this sound right?

Had my GPS on my "new to me" 2000 Venture. I noticed that my speedometer was over estimating my speed by about 10% vs. my GPS. I am assuming that the GPS is accurate. Any thoughts on what could be up with the bike that would make the speedometer overestimate? Thanks, Bob

On the post about 10% ethanol affecting/harming/benefitting our bikes, the subject of different brands, octane rating, and additives in fuels came up several times and it was interesting. Since we are scattered all over the globe, it would be interesting to observe various experiences both good and bad with what we are running through our engines. What's your experience/opinion? Please contribute here! JimBob5 added below:

I've had my 04 RSV for about a year and always suspected that the speedometer read a bit high. My suspicions were comfirmed on a recent trip to CA, when my GPS read 73MPH but my speedo read 80. I double checked by using a stopwatch and mile markers ans sure enough, it read about 10% high. I'm guessing that the odometer is also off by that much, but I haven't checked yet. Anyway, I looked around on the web and found the Speedohealer unit with a plug and play Yamaha harness for $94 (with free shipping). Seemed like a high price to pay to correct my speedo, but then I remembered how much my last speeding ticket cost. I have a heavy right arm, i like knowing exactly how much over the limit I am, and want my odometer mileage to be accurate. I bit the bullet and ordered one for Christmas. All I can say is that the installation was a breeze and the setup was equally simple. After I calibrated it using the formula on their website, my speedometer is accurate now to within 1MPH thoughout the range. Check www.speedohealer.com for details. Now that I've already spent the cash http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif , I was wondering if I should have brought it to the dealer for a warranty speedometer repair instead. Anyone ever have any luck with that? Seems to me that 10% high is outside of the error spec for a new vehicle. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_question.gif http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_question.gif
