halfwitt Posted April 28, 2009 #1 Posted April 28, 2009 I hate when my hands fall asleep during the day. It means they'll be up all night! When I ride for any length of time my throttle hand gets numb. I have standard gloves and stock grips. Is it my gloves? My grips? Is it physical? I don't think I grip too tight. It's only my right hand. Any thoughts?
BigBoyinMS Posted April 28, 2009 #2 Posted April 28, 2009 I would say it's pretty normal, especially if your older (like me). Almost anytime I'm on the Venture I'm using the cruise.
mkrieg Posted April 28, 2009 #3 Posted April 28, 2009 I get the same thing when I ride any lengthy distance.
Iowawegian Posted April 28, 2009 #4 Posted April 28, 2009 a throttle rocker and it makes all the difference in the world. $9.99.
1BigDog Posted April 28, 2009 #5 Posted April 28, 2009 For a minute there I thought Steven Wright joined the group.......
bongobobny Posted April 28, 2009 #6 Posted April 28, 2009 yah!! Sounds like periferal neuropathy or possibly carpal tunnel syndrome to me. I have both, and it's getting worse. Good gloves are mandatory for me...
Chuckles Posted April 28, 2009 #7 Posted April 28, 2009 Definatly sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome to me. Had that problem all the time till surgery. Now a throttle rocker and a good pair of gloves and no problems. Chuckles

hydraulicman Posted April 28, 2009 #9 Posted April 28, 2009 Read this is in the:97: Star magazine some time ago. Relax you shoulders and pull your elbows towards each other. You may have to grip the bars more, but the numbness will go away.
5bikes Posted April 28, 2009 #10 Posted April 28, 2009 Or cruise control. Your gripping too tight, relax. I use my left hand also to hold the throttle.
Monty Posted April 28, 2009 #11 Posted April 28, 2009 The wrong gloves can make this worse. I find that the gloves with the gel in the palms help alot...reduces vibration.
Kregerdoodle Posted April 29, 2009 #12 Posted April 29, 2009 same happens to me, but my middle and ring finger turn white like there is no blood in them...really bad in cold weather.
halfwitt Posted April 29, 2009 Author #13 Posted April 29, 2009 So your right hand falls asleep from too much use:think::think::crackup: I aint sayin nuthin....... Craig Well. my wife thought it was funny!
Naked Rider Posted April 29, 2009 #14 Posted April 29, 2009 so what type of gloves do you use. i need something my hands get numb all the time always shaking them to wake them up mostly the right but the left is just as bad.

It's only my right hand. Any thoughts? All of the above, Motorcycles riders develope a special type of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome that causes this. I've heard of remedies from Auccupuncture, to surgery, special gloves and everything in between. There may even be some threads on the subject on here. I've had it and I basically got used to it until it eventually went away after about a year or two. Some say Ace wrist support bandages help. I've seen special made riding gloves at motorcycle shows that are designed to combat this irratating condition.
Aimhigh Posted April 29, 2009 #17 Posted April 29, 2009 I have the same problem. Being a smaller person I changed the bars to the Barons and added a riser to decrease the reaching. And I have found that using the gloves with the finger area cut off help. I still have the numbness to a degree, but these things have helped.
Venturous Randy Posted April 29, 2009 #18 Posted April 29, 2009 a throttle rocker and it makes all the difference in the world. $9.99. Ditto on this. I have a standard, so my "cruise" is a precisely adjusted throttle lock that will stay set, but can be moved easy enough. But, the big improvement was the throttle rocker. I have much more finite control and I now don't have the numbness and tiredness in my right hand. RandyA
V7Goose Posted April 29, 2009 #19 Posted April 29, 2009 Motorcycle Consumer News did an excellent article on this in May, 2005. They also did an article on carpal tunnel in March, 2003. They have a lousy web site, but you can order either paper or digital back issues: http://www.mcnews.com Goose
Condor Posted April 29, 2009 #20 Posted April 29, 2009 OK, My spin. I've been suffering from the old Dead Hands Symptom for about the last three years or so. Right hand worse than the left. The throttle lock helped a bunch, and probably would have kept things under control, but last summer while riding on the SLO get2gether we were on 25 miles of twisties over the the coast out Ft Hunter-Legget. I couldn't set the TL and couldn't let go of the grips. The right hand went so dead it hurt. I should have pulled over, but DUH!! When we finally reached Hwy 1 my hand never recovered. For the next 6 months until I had carpal tunel surgery I couldn't feel a thing. When I went in for testing they found that both hands had equal carpal but only the right showed symptoms. So I had the right hand done in Feb. About 95% of the feeling has come back, and I haven't had the hand go dead since. Lately the left hand has started to act up, and I now have surgery scheduled for October after the Cody Round-Up. If you're experiencing DHS you need to go see a Doc and find out where you are on the Carpal Scale... Caught early enough you'll recover to 100%...
pegscraper Posted April 29, 2009 #21 Posted April 29, 2009 So how long does the surgery for carpal tunnel last? My wife has heard tales of some people having to have it done several times. I'm developing wrist problems myself and fear I may be headed in this direction.
halfwitt Posted April 29, 2009 Author #22 Posted April 29, 2009 Thank you everybody for your input. It sounds like I need my carpal tunnels checked out.
Cougar Posted April 29, 2009 #23 Posted April 29, 2009 Throttle Rocker first silly. 9.99! Mine used to do that as well. Say hi to the doctor for me!
halfwitt Posted April 29, 2009 Author #24 Posted April 29, 2009 Throttle Rocker first silly. 9.99! Mine used to do that as well. Say hi to the doctor for me! I guess that would be a good first choice.
Thom Posted April 30, 2009 #25 Posted April 30, 2009 I have the same problem but the doc well not operate on me for tcs so i changed bars . now my rite grip is farther froward than my left and sticks almost straight out instead of pulled back . if you can try some one's cruiser with the grips sideways you will see what i mean . the bars i have on my 1st gen are off a Voyager with 4 in risers 1 1/2 in back works very good Thom
