SteveP Posted August 4, 2007 #1 Posted August 4, 2007 Mounted the XM antenna (GXM-30) for the Garmin Zumo 500 today. Used a Kuryakyn inspection sticker plate (part #9168) mounted to the right side mirror post. Drilled two 5/32" holes in the Kury plate, using the Garmin antenna's steel baseplate as a template. Screwed the baseplate to the antenna from below (screws & baseplate provided with the GXM-30 antenna). Used two screws and nylon locking nuts to secure the baseplate to the Kury plate. Screwed the right side mirror post through the Kury plate's mounting hole. Easy installation, works great, looks good and is pretty secure. Pics below. Now it's time to go out riding & enjoy the XM radio.............
SteveP Posted August 5, 2007 Author #4 Posted August 5, 2007 That's a really good idea. Thanks! I was in the shop -- having ridden there with the antenna magnet-mounted to the gas tank, still trying to think up a mounting plan -- when I saw the inspection plate. They let me take it out to the parking lot to check for size and there it was!!! Unfortunately, the plate is not magnetic so the antenna wouldn't hold on which is why I mounted the antenna's steel plate. Once you're settled in from your move and I get that mic cable you make, my Zumo will be the "do-all accessory" on my RSV. I wanted to share the idea; I know I've picked up several useful tips from here in the short time I've been logged on.
brscooter Posted August 5, 2007 #5 Posted August 5, 2007 Is that GXM antenea the only one you can use? If so where do you get it and how much is it?
SteveP Posted August 21, 2007 Author #6 Posted August 21, 2007 Is that GXM antenea the only one you can use? If so where do you get it and how much is it? It's the GXM-30 antenna. I'm pretty sure it's the only one that works with the ZUmo 500. It's not just the XM antenna; it's also the XM radio tuner (together in the hockey puck size unit). It plugs directly into the Zumo that then controls the channel changing. I bought it here for $189. The Zumo 500 was $652. That was the best deal I could find for the Zumo & GXM-30: total price $841 (+$22 shipping). Well worth it: GPS, MP3 player & XM radio all in one unit. It also has the capability (the GXM-30) to receive XM traffic & real-time weather info, but I don't pay for those services, just the radio.
Freebird Posted August 20, 2009 #7 Posted August 20, 2009 Sgripp posted what he uses and then deleted it for some reason. Maybe the link was bad. I use that same one though. I saw it on Rick Butler's bike while at the hub and he told me that he picked it up at Cycle Gadgets. I picked one up when we rode over there. I like it a lot. Like some others have stated, I move mine back and forth between the bike and my work car so needed it mounted so that I could easily remove it. Here is the link again. Only $5.50. http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/gps/detail.asp?prod=ZUMO Then scroll down the page until you see the Ram Bracket for the Garmin GXM-30. It works great. I found though that the magnet is too weak when you are on rough roads and the antenna will eventually vibrate to the side. It comes with two screws that you can secure it to the mount with. The antenna is already drilled and tapped for them. Works great.
Mariner Fan Posted August 20, 2009 #8 Posted August 20, 2009 Nice looking mount Steven! I used the screws to secure mine to the plate figuring that it would make it a bit more tough for someone to take it.
BuddyRich Posted August 20, 2009 #9 Posted August 20, 2009 Hey Don, Use Velcro... Then you won't have to unscrew it. Works good in the truck to to keep it from sliding around also.
