cimmer Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Just thought I would share what I have found on replacing the fuel filter on the 86-93 Ventures. I order a replacement from Sirius Consolidated, part # 09-116, up in Canada as they listed it as a replacement for the Venture. When I tried to install this new filter, I was unable to get it to slide onto the existing fuel line. What I found was that the inlet nipple on the filter is 3/8 inch (10.4 mm) where the original Yamaha filter, part # 1FK-24560-10, is 43/128 inch (8.55 mm). The over all length is about the same for both. The reason I bring this up is that if you are not replacing the special fuel line, which of course if N/A from Yamaha, the replacement just simple has too big of a nipple for the hose to slide over comfortably. Here is a picture of the two filters with the SCI on the left and the Yamaha on the right. Hope this helps people out in the future. Rick F.
Flyinfool Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 I would think that most any 5/16, inline fuel filter would work just fine. like this one from NAPA.
BlueSky Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Differential pressure across the filter may not be a concern on our bikes because they have a fuel pump. But, I installed a filter on my gravity fed carbs on my Kawasaki ZN700 and I have to be careful to get a filter that flows freely or the carbs will starve at higher rpm. It may be safer to use a filter designed for a bike.

I bought one of those glass fuel filters with replaceable elements years ago but haven't gotten up the courage to put in on my '93. I wonder if the screen mesh would filter out as well as paper media, and putting a glass filter on a motorcycle makes me concerned about breakage.

I'll admit, I have it ziptied in the air so it doesn't rattle against any frame. I really like seeing the gas.
Bob K. Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) I'm going to give this HIPA fuel filter a try (replaces Briggs & Stratton # 695666 and 691035). It has a clear body, 1/4" inlet and outlet, and fits nicely in the original fuel filter bracket. $8.87 for a 2-pack. It passed the first test today and flows tons of fuel...as fast as the fuel pump can cycle. I'll let you know if I have any future problems with it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XRNYHK8/ I also took off the old spring-style fuel line clamps and put on new fuel injector style clamps. They look nice, are much more compact than worm-style gear clamps, and tighten down the hose quite nicely even if the hose is stretched out. Mine was stretched out from the PO using a filter with oversized inlet/outlet. On the old red fuel hose up to the carbs, I like how the pressure is evenly distributed across the entire width of the clamp rather than being concentrated in just the two spots where the wires are with the original screw-down wire clamps. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071GFC9RN/ Looks pretty spiffy when it's all put together. Harryhammer Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 Hey guys..new to site. Picked up a sweet ride..my question is Where is the fuel filter located on my 86
Grez007 Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 HarryHammer, not sure if your filter is in the same place as my 83 but mine is on the left side of the bike behind the frame approximately where the passengers foot rest is, most easily seen from the rear of the bike looking up and forward, it's hard to see from the outside of the bike even with the side cover off because the fuel pump sits right in front of it

The fit was a little loose on my existing fuel hoses, but I followed up with geared hose clamps. The plastic nippes on either end will collapse if you overtighten, so use caution, fellas. Rode her tonight and no issues. My old filter had rust in it!
Bob K. Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 (edited) Mine has worked very well, too, for about 200 miles so far. One Amazon reviewer said the plastic on his melted () so I'll keep an eye out for that. So long as that was a one-off issue, these appear to be great filters for the Venture. It also looks like this same filter is sold under multiple brand names on Amazon, so there might be betters deals available there for multiple filters. Edited December 26, 2018 by Bob K.
Bob K. Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 (edited) 1.5 years and several thousands miles on this Hipa fuel filter. Still working nicely. I'd say it's a proven replacement option for our bikes. Edited March 13, 2020 by Bob K.
