jld1960tx Posted September 27, 2010 #1 Posted September 27, 2010 Hey Guys, My wife and I are going on a road trip next weekend from East Texas to Vicksburg then Natchez and back home. I was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions on sights to see that we would not see otherwise. I plan on doing the military park in Vicksburg and catching the Natchez Trace on the way to Natchez. Also, I plan on passing through Nachitoches on the way back. So, fire away suggestions because all are appreciated. Thanks. Jeff
BigBoyinMS Posted September 27, 2010 #2 Posted September 27, 2010 About halfway between Vicksburg and Natchez is a little community called Lorman. I keep hearing of a place there called "The Old Country Store". They supposedly have about the best country buffet in three states... especially the fried chicken. Here's a link. Not really what you asked for but you have to eat somewhere! As far as interesting sites... I made a trip to the ghost town of Rodney, MS 4-5 years ago. Not a lot to see anymore except the old church but an interesting history. In the mid to late 1800's it was the largest town on the Mississippi River between Memphis and New Orleans. It was pretty much the center of the cotton trade in the state at the time. It came within just a few votes of being the state capitol. But the river changed course and moved three miles away which started it's demise. There's more here... Rodney pics, etc. and here... Rodney stories And there is also the Windsor Ruins... what's left of a HUGE 4 story mansion from the mid 1800's. It was so grand that the Union soldiers didn't burn it but after the war a guest left his cigar burning on a balcony and burned it down. Here's a link... Windsor Ruins
jfoster Posted September 27, 2010 #3 Posted September 27, 2010 Jeff, I live bout 30 miles west of Natchitoches....if ya get in a bind, just holler. Other than that, I know of a good bbq joint in Mansfield if ya are heading back that way into Texas on 84 (open thru, fri, sat). The one in Clarence isn't any good, no matter what anyone says.
