Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 #1 Posted March 7, 2009 I Love the other mods for the passenger floorboards they have been great idea's! I was even making a set until I talked with GunnyButch and had him shoot me so photos and with the new conversion to trike I can not have them in that area. Finding Afterwords that my wife needs more forward leg room anyways do to an old injury. she needs to stretch them while riding once in a while. so going down-word will not make her happy.... After saying that.. This is what I came up with on my proto type. I made my templates out of Aluminum (easier cutting and drilling) In this proto type I used the aluminum that I had laying around. the angle was 2 inch. ( will go to 1" Steel) But you must use a 1 inch die aluminum rod for the pegs to bolt on perfect (peg clamp). I will be making the bottom support out of steel painted black, the round aluminum will be polished like chrome when I am done The length now on the rod is at 6 inches long. Just want to make sure the height requirement before I cut to the right size and round the top. I also used the same Kuryakyn Pegs as I use for the front (7980 Longhorn Dually 1" clamp) I got to thinking of Dons Center Stand, and bolted to the same spot he did. also adding two large hose clamp on each side of that helped as well for even more support to the bikes frame on the underside. Anyways , shoot away with any comments you have so I can learn and maybe even make this better. Not having the center stand anymore, I am thinking that even if you still had one on there you could use longer bolts and still be able to attach at the same point. Here are some pics.. I have a few other idea's and I will Post when this project is complete If it seems to be a winner I will to a write-up on the dimensions of it .
flb_78 Posted March 7, 2009 #2 Posted March 7, 2009 That looks like a wreck waiting to happen. The lean angle of the machine has just been cut down severely.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #3 Posted March 7, 2009 The angle barley sticks out though. Looking at some of the other stuff on the bike looks as if it would hit first. The bike is being triked next week anyways. so no angle problem there. I will look much better when finished as well I should have waited to post *lol* BUT this is what I need to hear..keep them coming Jeff
IH Truck Guy Posted March 7, 2009 #4 Posted March 7, 2009 Cougar,it looks good... I think Diamond R makes a set of flip out passenger pegs for the 2nd Gens. I working on making something similar to go on our 1st Gen...
GunnyButch Posted March 7, 2009 #5 Posted March 7, 2009 Jeff, That is a very good start. Can the angle iron be shortened so it doesn't extend beyond the frame or just short of the exhaust header? Then put a 90 degree bend on the round stock and weld it to the inside of the angle iron. That way all you would see is the round stock curving up from under the exhaust. Once it was fabricated you could always have it chromed.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #6 Posted March 7, 2009 Ok guys.. I need to take a better angle picture.. If I look straight down from the top of the bike, the whole thing sticks out only 1.5 inches. now remember I will be using 1 inch steel. what is on there now is 2 inch alm angle. So end result is 1.5 past the header , heck I think there is stuff out farther then that on the bike now. AND only 1 inch below the frame of the bike.. the 1 inch steel angle will be black and not much there. the other part will be polished alm. (pretty) ~S~ Just for the heck of it.. how many of you lean that far anyways? Ummmm my goodness. maybe I did when I was younger!
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #7 Posted March 7, 2009 Gunny. Can I Bend 1 inch round aluminum? Now ya got me thinking.. great idea. shorter angle stock bend coming around and up past the header. Ummmm As far as the chrome part I can polish this as well to look like chrome. But your saying have metal bent and welded I think.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #8 Posted March 7, 2009 Dan, yes I looked at Diamond a couple years ago. but I ask them about the hight. I is higher then the stock passenger board but will not go down-word If they did I would have got them a long time ago. there not bad looking as well.
pegscraper Posted March 7, 2009 #9 Posted March 7, 2009 Interesting idea. That would be okay for a trike, but I could never use it. I have scrapes on my kickstand. I've been trying to come up with a way to mount some pegs in almost that exact spot. I'm looking at the frame member that goes in front of the exhaust Y and trying to figure out how to mount something to that, but don't really have anything yet.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #10 Posted March 7, 2009 Holy Crap... scrapping the kick stand? wowzer!
Grey Ghost Posted March 7, 2009 #11 Posted March 7, 2009 I scraped my engine guards once................when I dropped the bike.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #12 Posted March 7, 2009 Yeah, wouldn't these LEANER'S hit the driver floorboards and the crash guards if they lean this much? I love this learning stuff!
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #13 Posted March 7, 2009 Lynn, I will look in that spot today , see what I find.
pegscraper Posted March 7, 2009 #14 Posted March 7, 2009 Yeah, if I scrape the kickstand up very much more, the kick down lever is going to fall off of it. Anything that stands proud of the exhaust pipes is in a bad place. I'd like to put some footpegs right about where the horn is on the right side. I don't think that side would be too difficult. I can always relocate the horn. But I can't figure out how to get one in the same spot on the left side.
Kregerdoodle Posted March 7, 2009 #15 Posted March 7, 2009 I like the Idea, I also didn`t read all the other posts, so this Idea may have allready been mentioned, but how about using round stock all the way instead of it welded to the angle, and just weld some tabs on the round stock to fasten to the brackets under the bike?? Again sorry if this has been brought up, too lazy to read all the posts.. K
CMIKE Posted March 7, 2009 #16 Posted March 7, 2009 AS I understand it your wife needs to straighten her legs out more than the floor boards allow. What about trying to mount something to the existing passenger floor board mount (passenger floorboard to frame)that extends foward then has a flip out dually peg ...this would solve all the lean angle issues. and I think you could make it look really good if you put your creative mind to it. I would probably clamp something underneath or use longer bolts to attach it with the bolts that attach the floor board to the bike, go out to avoid the side cover and exahaust then up where you need them to be. Maybe even drill into those mounts to attach something to them. Hell if it was painted black to extend to the position you wanted then attach a set of chrome foot pegs on it, I do not think it would look bad if you had a good paint job on it. I like others here do not like the decrease lean angle...if you have never scraped the ground in a turn...you will be surprized and with that sticking out the side... it could happen easy. Let me tell you the first time I heard part of my bike scrap the ground , there was a pucker factor I had to deal with cause I was not expecting it at all. I really did not think I was that low, nor was I trying to get down that low. Good concept you have there...I just think you may be causing some unintentional consiquenses.
Cougar Posted March 7, 2009 Author #17 Posted March 7, 2009 Kbay, Thats an Excellent Idea. I have to find out how or were to bend solid round steel. OR I wonder if I could use something like a conduit? The wife came home from work and the angle, distance and resting area is in right location now. Now I go from there with the Ideas and more modifications.
Cougar Posted March 8, 2009 Author #18 Posted March 8, 2009 CMIK, I will not have lean problem as the bike is being triked in the next week or so.. I also did try and make brackets, even have and extra set of OEM passenger floorboards that I was going to hack and cut up for one of my projects. come to find out after Gunny sent me some picture. the new trike body wraps right around the floorboard. so that idea is out until I can see it visually on my own bike one day. You guys are certainly coming up with some GREAT idea''s though. Jeff
flb_78 Posted March 8, 2009 #19 Posted March 8, 2009 Just for the heck of it.. how many of you lean that far anyways
Cougar Posted March 8, 2009 Author #20 Posted March 8, 2009 Holy Cow FLB Sheesh.. You should get an award for that kinda leaning! how do you keep from sliding the rear around leaning that far? I would not be brave enough to lean that far!
MidlifeVenture Posted March 8, 2009 #21 Posted March 8, 2009 A little confused I work in the welding industry, just how do you weld aluminum to steel?
CMIKE Posted March 8, 2009 #22 Posted March 8, 2009 A little confused I work in the welding industry, just how do you weld aluminum to steel? JB weld?
pegscraper Posted March 8, 2009 #23 Posted March 8, 2009 Wow, that muffler picture is great! And he does that on a car tire. I do get a kick out of watching other people's heads turn when they hear the awful noise when I touch down in a corner.
GunnyButch Posted March 8, 2009 #24 Posted March 8, 2009 A little confused I work in the welding industry, just how do you weld aluminum to steel? Maybe weld was a poor choice of words, it seems to me there would be some means of bonding the two metals though. That's why you guys make the big bucks. Jeff, Can your source for the round stock bend it to the angle you need? It is certainly something that falls into the "do not attempt this at home" without the right equipment.
Cougar Posted March 8, 2009 Author #25 Posted March 8, 2009 Yep, your right. and I am thinking l Like that idea. Get 1" Round Steel have it bent perfect! kinda like a "U" shape. Then have a steel square flat pad welded to the center for the bolt on. Then after all is good. (HAVE IT CHROMED) At least I have my proto-type to get the right measurements from now for a machinist to help me out. Jeff
