  1. I just got off the phone with the MotorcycleSuperstore.com wanting to order (for the third year in a row), another set of these: (I have been very happy with them!) Dunlop Elite 3 Front Tire Color - --, Size - 150/80H-16 SKU# 157506 On Order $106.99 1 $106.99 Dunlop Elite 3 Tour Rear Tire Color - --, Size - MV85HB-15 SKU# 119995 Approved $130.99 1 $130.99 But, I was informed that the Touring Elite III Rear Tire has been discontinued, and they said that it wasn't replaced with another model. What's up with that? So, I figured that I would go back to the Avon Venoms (which I also like a lot), but they want $76.00 more for the Avons than I paid for the T.E. IIIs last year. Does anyone have any suggestions on a different model comparable to either the T.E. III, or the Avon Venom, or a different dealer I should check-out? I have tried Metzler's, but don't really want to go back to them. Thanks guys & Be Safe! Pete.
  2. I know some of you have done this... Riding down the highway...and a sharp rock pops up right in your tire path and run over it...you hear it and you feel it. I bet I have done it a dozen times over the course of several years...but today I was inspecting my Dunlop E3's and noticed my front tire had a very small "v" cut into the high rubber tread. I took a small screw driver and tried to "probe"it to see how deep and it APPEARS to be superficial...I only have 8000 miles on this front tire. It looks like it would be wore down after a few hundred miles... I know that they can all be different, but just curious if anyone else has done this before...and did you replace or continue to roll.
  3. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Took my rear wheel to the dealer to mount a new tire. Went to put the wheel on today only to find out the hub is missing the bearing collar. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Also noticed a bunch of new weights, 8 of them on the rim to balance the new tire. Hummm... don't suppose they tried to balance the tire without the bearing collar do you? Dang! I hate going to the dealer. The collar is only like $9.00 but I have a 4 day ride planned and I doubt I can get one in time for the ride. Of course the dealer is closed Monday, don't suppose they are smart enough to find it on the floor and say ooops we forgot someones bearing collar. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Or do they just trash all the "missing parts" left on the shop floor. Dang! I hate going to the dealer, you just can't trust them to do anything right. The reason I brought just the wheel was so I could grease my own splines and NOT strip out my mufflers nor saddlebag bolts like they did the last time. Dang! I hate going to the dealer.
  4. After seeing the idea in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46995 I started looking for one. Found one from the Stratoliner S (RoadlinerS wheel is also the same)that was polished. Ultimately decided this was easier (and cheaper) than buying the painted Strat/Roadliner wheel and having it either polished or chromed. Was able to get the complete rim with tire and rotors. The Strat and Roadliner rotors are full floaters so will be ideal when I do the caliper upgrade. The tire is 130/70R-18. Its a radial and only has a 63H load rating (600lbs) versus the stock 150/80-16 71H loadrating (761 lbs). Haven't worked out yet how big a deal that is going to be if any as of yet. 130/70-18 is the same size front tire as the wing and it has the same load rating. Since no one makes a 15" radial motorcycle rear tire, my choices are to run mixed radial front with bias rear or purchase a 130/70-18 Bias Dunlop E3 Front although the recommended rim width for the Bias E3 in that size is only 3 inches and the Strat rim is 4" wide. There is a 140-80R -18 front radial that is close to the stock OA diameter and width and fits a 4" wide rim. That would fill out the fender more. Riding it, there doesn't seem at this point to be any noticable ill effects from the Size, radial, bias mix. That being said I'm in SOuth Florida- 11 turns in 318 miles- Not sure what it will feel like in the mountains or pushing it hard. The Slow speed handling is noticably improved as would be expected from the smaller tire. It looks to be over all about .8 inches shorter in OA height, something I don't really want, but it is what its unless I replace the tire. These are all the caveats I can think of at the moment. As I ride it more may have some more input. Put some pictures here and put them all in a gallery. RSTDdog

    Wobble at 55-60

Ride an 2003 RSV with a sidecar. Have a front end vibration at 55 up to 60. Only there, no other speed. Occurs in 4th or 5th. Straight roads or curves. Bike has 19,750 on it, going in for the 20K in the next couple of weeks. I doubt it's cupping, not willing to believe that-seems every shop says 'cupping' so they can sell a tire. So, any suggestions? I think it's a balancing issue. Front tire is a Dunlop D404F. Thanks.
  6. I was talking to a tire guy and he mentioned a foam insert that he can get to put into the front tire. Supposedly if I run over something and cut the front tire it will allow me to maintain control and safely stop. I had never heard of this before but it did make me wonder. Is it worth the $35 bucks plus the extra few bucks to have him put it in? Anyone ever hear of it before? Shaun
  7. Howdy. I'll be replacing my stock Bridgestone tires in the next month and am in the middle of doing a little research. I've read a whole bunch on here about different tire brands and what people like and dislike and I believe I've decided to move forward and purchase the Avon Venoms for my 06 RSTD. My questions is about the tire rating. There are a lot of posts that talk about tire rating but I haven't found any that actually answer my specific questions. Hopefully someone can. Here goes: If I have a front tire rated 71 (520 lbs) and a rear tire rated 80 (992 lbs), does that mean the total capacity for the bike is 1512 lbs? Put another way, if the above is true with regards to ratings and the bike weighs in at 844 lbs, does that mean I can have roughly 650 more pounds of me, the wife, cargo, accessories, etc? The reason I'm asking this question is that I've always wondered how much I'm stressing the tires when both my wife and I are riding. I'm not a small guy (I go about 325) and with my wife (I'm not dumb and won't give out her weight) we weigh in right around 475 lbs (you do the math ). That's quite a bit and when you add in clothes, helmets, jackets and so on, we may get close to that 500 lb mark. I just want to make sure I'm riding safe and I noticed the Avon Venoms have a high rating. What will that mean for me? I appreciate everyones thoughts.
  8. I updated the speed calculation sheet I had posted a while back. I can't find the thread so I started a new one. I added a feature to be able to display speeds in Kilometers/Hour. Also modified the tire size inputs a little. I got a new rear tire and found it was easier to measure circumference accurately than it was to measure diameter. Added correction factor for wheel slippage in each gear. The password to unlock the sheet is dingy if you are an excel guru and want to play with it. Only locked it as it is easier for user if only cells that need input are editable. Gary
  9. I was given a little cash from my ex co-workers for my retirement...the caviet was I must buy bike stuff! Tough crowd but I see more chrome and such in my bikes future. I was wondering if anyone has the harley rear lighting system laying around. I know Buckeye has some listed. Right now I am not interested in full price items unless I have to ( cheaper means more stuff right). So far I have bought a new tire and a new pair of mesh type pants I have been after but too cheap to buy myself. Got em from Motorcycle Gear through the link so we should get some credit. Thanks all.
  10. JakeWilson.com had a price increase on all tires. Today, I ordered Avon Venoms and paid $12 per tire more than when I looked earlier. Saving Grace, Avon has a $25 per tire rebate to 15 May 2011. Attached is the Rebate Form. MIKE aka Uturn
  11. Anybody Tried a 170/80-15 Pirelli MT-66 on the back yet ? If so did it rub or fit at all?
  12. Did you ever start a small project and end up deeper than you had any intention? I knew my front tire was a little worn and had a lot of cracks in it too, so thought I would replace the Elite 2 with a new one, now how hard can that be? I took the wheel off and had a friend change the tire. He left it out in the rain after changing it and got a lot of water in the bearings. Well guess with 40k on the bike it might be a good idea to replace the bearings. Talked to Buckeye to order the parts and mentioned that I was going to check the starter since I had a small leak in the radiator hose also and it would be a good time to look at the starter. The bike starts slow after it is hot. He suggested that the real fix was a 4 brush starter. Ok one more thing what the heck. While disconnecting the battery to remove the starter found a broken fuse clip so guess I will change over to new type fuses. ALL I REALY WANTED TO DO WAS CHANGE MY TIRE!!!!
  13. OK, first of all My bike is triked and it is amazing the side to side scrapping of the front tire and the wear it causes so forget about another new (front bike tire) then I was thinking of going with a M/C rear tire on the front to get better wear of of it. As I was searching I found that you darksiders are using a 165/80/15 on the rear of your bike, with that in mind I was wondering if that would work for me on the front as I have a brand new Nankang 165/80/15 sitting out in the garage, I matched it up with an older front M/C tire and the hight seems about right , did notice that the inner ring of the C/T was a bit smaller. now that might bike does not lean anymore would this work? boy it would last a lot longer I bet. Thanks for any help. Just racking my tiny brain. Jeff
  14. i've been on here for over 2 yrs now and see all the tire questions but havnt seen or missed this one, most tell their dislike for bridgestone but never state why they dislike them, they came on my 2010 rsv and even tho i've only gotten 350 miles thus far they seem to hold the road well anddont follow road smakes as bas as the 404's do just wondered what it as about them we dislike thanks steve
  15. It's over now... Went to pick up a 165/80R - 15 kumho tire at tire discount in jackson OHIO and they said there were none to be had in their warehouses because of the strike in Korea. Looked it up on the internet when I got back and it says the strike is now over... they had been fighting about a month... Passenger car tires are gonna start up first so we should be able to get some fresh ones shortly! :mo money:Although a little more expensive? "The darkside is strong with this one"
  16. I'm not sure if I put this in the correct category, but whatever. There was a thread a while back that sort of addressed a sidewall cracking issue on Avon Venom tires. My question is, has anyone successfully had a tire replaced by Avon due to a sidewall cracking issue? I've got a set of Avon Venom-x that were put on less than 1,000 miles ago (both front and rear) and I have a ridiculous amount of sidewall cracking on the front tire (right side only). I called the dealer that installed them and they told me to contact Avon directly, which I have done. Just looking for some input and to see if anyone else has had this issue and got it addressed by either their dealer or Avon. Additional information: I live in west Texas and the bike is stored in a garage. To my knowledge no tire dressing has ever been put on them and only soap and water has been used to clean them. (the guy I bought it from had them put on, and the bike had less than 50 miles on them from when they were installed at the dealership). The bike originally lived in southern california. The date code on the tire is 4205 (so it is obviously a few years old). The cracking is pretty consistent all the way around the tire. I run these at 36psi. I am trying to figure out what could have caused this and not a whole lot is making sense as to why it would only be the right sidewall on the front tire when the left side of the front and the rear do not have a single blemish on them. Any input is appreciated, and I'll keep everyone posted on what, if anything, I hear back from Avon. I have attached a few pictures to show ya'll what I'm talking about. Thanks a lot for your time, it is appreciated.
  17. Just got finished putting a new set of Elite III's on the old 86 and did a good ride to break them in. Man they are a smooth, good handling tire!! One question, how much pressure do I need to run in them? I had Elite II's on it before and I ran the manual specs for two up (35 front / 40 rear). Should I run the Elite III's the same??? Thanks for the input.
  18. Hi I am replacing my rear tire on my 2001 RSV and would really like to hear some new opinions on what tires to consider. Thank you Bert:confused:
  19. Is this what you guys use to change your tires..Harbor Freight Tire Changer that is? If so I may order one....then solicit help figuring out how the heck it works! http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-tire-changer-34542.html
  20. This tire came off of Dave`s ( Just monkeyin around) 1st gen, it is not to the wear bars yet. Really lucky he made it on this thing.
  21. Ok, I've been a big supporter of the Avon Venons. I'm happy with them as an all round, all weather tire. But I'm at the point where the set I have now needs to be replaced. The one thing I'd like to gain in a new set of tires is better handling on off the beaten path roads. Lime rock, gravel and dirt. The Avons are not the greatest on these kinds of roads. I'm not going all out off road here but I do tend to wander down any road that will take me to someplace interesting. I live in Nebraska for Gods sake. It takes some effort to get someplace interesting. I ran Contys on my old GWs back in the 80's and they worked pretty well on the gravel roads. They were a pretty well treaded tire. Any recommendations on tire that would be an improvement in this area that would be available in 1st gen sizes? Mike
  22. Ok guys, if you need a new rear tire, or are going to need a new tire in the near future you better get it ordered. As I have stated many times before, I always check with Motorcyclesuperstore first when thinking about ordering something. Well, today I got an email about a sale they were having on tires so I thought well maybe I'd get a better deal than the last(which was pretty good 130.99, I thought) which was an E3 rear for Biggal. To my surprise the sale price was 141.99!!! I thought this had to be a mistake so I called them up and they confirmed that price. When asked if I wanted to order I said no. Hung up the phone and checked Jake Wilson and they have the same tire for 130.99. So I guess the oil prices are beginning to affect everything else. Like I said, if you need or gonna need a new tire soon Jake Wilson has the best deal right now. They may even be higher in a few days!!!!!
  23. Heres something new to me, went to have my new avon venom rear mounted today and the beads were so close together that they couldn't get the beads on the rim and to accept air. make sense?? plus being about 40 degrees didn't help, we even tried the starting fluid trick to no avail. sooooo the tire is now in the garage for a couple days with 3 1/4" blocks spreading the beads apart. never happened before and will never happen again...
  24. It's done, and it was a job. My trip to Texas Hill Country resulted in a hole in the rear tire. Plugged it (twice) and got it home. I ordered a new tire and this weekend I decided to get it mounted. The tire & wheel came off the bike easy, as usual. My new super-duper tire-iron is really nice and the first bead came off without too much trouble. However, the second bead decide to be difficult. I called my neighbor for help and we still struggled for over 30 minutes! If my next tire change is this much trouble, I am buying one of those Harbor Freight tire changers . . .
  25. How many Ventureriders actually tried and why they didn't like the darkside? What front tire do you use? For informational purposes only. Not trying to start something. Please do not reply unless you have actually tried a car tire but didn't like the darkside? Thanks Joe
