If you have had any issues with the rev's hanging up high or serious idle issues it is worth checking out. Spray something like WD 40 around where they seat and see if there is any fluctuation on the rev's. If not, probalny not a problem. The ones on my '84 looked like they were going to be a problem but after inspection of the inside I left them on. Still the sames ones today. As stated, they are thick rubber over a metal core and rarely do they crack all the way through. Mike

Hey Fuzzy, Congrats on your successful project. Sounds like you had a busy day. Your brake lines were not as old as the ones on my '84 but I gotta say when I changed mine out to SS I was worried when I finished up and tried my front brake lever. I thought it was stuck. Firm ...er ...solid I guess would be the right word. I whole new feel to the brakes. So no practicing your controled skids. Mike

My local 66 station I usually stop at almost threw me yesterday. I stopped in to top off the cage which needed about 16 gallons and when I pulled up to the pumps ALL the nozzles were bagged and tagged as out of service EXCEPT the premium pumps. They seemed to be working fine but at $4.49 per gallon there were not many takers. Me neither. Most the local stations are running regular at $3.66 + or - a few cents.

50mph Crosswinds. How do you ride? fast? slow? not at all
Snaggletooth replied to deepforkriver's topic in Watering Hole
Who told ya that? I've had a lot of riding in winds like that. Drives me nuts on the slab. 75 mph can get you to changing lanes rather you want or not. At least it keeps most the cages from drafting on you. Not all .... but a few. Freaks them out I guess. I usually try to reroute myself to a road where I can bring the pace down a bit. I'd rather have a bit slower speed and a little more reaction time to adjust. There are those days with the side gusts that feel like somebody threw a sand bag at ya that make me find a place to park for a while. That ain't worth the risk in my book. Now for the tail winds..... yea! Great fuel mileage! Sadly the wind isn't always headed where I want to go. Mike -
I've always been a fan of HJC and own three of their helmets. The last one purchased was a modular SyMax II. I was very happy with it for fit and comfort and the flip up chin. In less than a year the chin release started acting up and then failed to release. I contacted MotorcycleGear.com and even though it was just past warranty at that time they issued a code to return the helmet for repairs or replacement. Kudos to them as it turned out it was known and common issue with that model. http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/hjc-sy-max-2-flip-up-failure/ But the issue was the plastic pivot bosses had broken away from the inner frame, not the cables as had been suggested. That gave me reason to reconsider the idea of a modular helmet. I suppose with a higher grade helmet that may never occur but I think my next helmet will be a full face. I want to feel a little more comfortable with the idea my face is going to stay protected when I get around to doing my face plant on the concrete. Something to consider in your choice. Mike

The DEKA AGM is the battery with a strong following right now. It is American made and very reasonable on price for the quality of it. Very tough battey. I'm headed into my 4th season on mine on my '84 with no issues. The DEKA AGM, like other AGM's is very slow to discharge when not used often. It is a 12.8 volt battery so it pops the V4 right over very quickly. These bikes love their juice as you probably already know. You can check with bohannonbattery.com for more info or PM skydoc_17 here on the site as he sells them also. But for under a $100.00 you can't find a stronger battery with the CCA's that surpass most the others out there. With the sealed cell battery you need to build a sensor bypass to replace the probe for battery. Matter of a couple bucks of parts from Radio Shack. No more blinky. There are a few posts around here to help you create one. As far a buying a DEKA locally I know some members have run across them at local auto supply shops under different labels for decent prices. I'm sure someone will pop in with that info for you. What ever the label...... make sure it's Amercan made. If so, it's probably made by DEKA. I thinks Autozone was one to the places but I can's say for sure. Mike

Fuel/gas filter alternative
Snaggletooth replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jasonm has a good point. In my case I have treated my tank with Caswells Epoxy Sealer and replaced the pick up filters on the petcock along with every fuel line. My point is I can very quickly and clearly see any particals settling into the glass cartridge. With the OEM and others you only find you have a problem when the fuel quits flowing.- 7 replies

Certainly do the ground mod while you're there. You won't regret it and for the pocket change it costs in do it the results are great in the long run. Mike- 8 replies

Fuel/gas filter alternative
Snaggletooth replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, those will work. I used to by mine at a local independent bike shop for about $4.00. Two years ago I changed over to a metal housing one with the glass cartridge and replaceable filter screens. It was a bit smaller than the OEM's but I wrapped it in section of rubber from an inner tube and cut slots in it so I could see though the glass and still use the original bracket. Works out pretty well as I don't have to mess with the clamps on the bracket any more. Just unscrew the end and swap the filter. About $12.00 bucks for that. Mike- 7 replies

If it was me I'd keep it on the 2 amp setting for the duration. The DEKA will take a charge of up to about 15 v with no issue but if you ran it completly down I'd perfer a slow cook rather than a faster charge. 6 amps isn't all that much but still....... Does your charger shut down at a full charge? Once charged I'd let it sit for 24 hours to see where the volts level off at. With any luck they should come right back to 12.8. I'm curious on this one. I've never run mine anywhere near dead so the results should tell us how tough the AGM's are. I changed out all my marker lights to LED's a couple years then ended up leaving them on by accident for a week in the garage while I was gone. Came back and found the battey was still at 12.6. Hope it works out on the recovery. Mike

I have the Mac's on my '84. Can't really call them loud but I do like the rumble. Now that cackle at a 6 grand shift does remind me of a 350 chevy quite a bit. -
That isn't a bad price. I thought I had read somewhere he had jumped the price up to around $700.00 a while back.

Snaggletooth replied to Cougar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Jeff, I wasn't sure on the location on the R/R. Just adding info for future reference. Ya never know what might end up in the garage some day. I just saw your post on the DEKA question a minute ago so that answered that. Glad I could offer some useful info to help ya along. Like I said I'm no expert on this electrical stuff but I know how well what I ended up with works. Lots of the other members got me to that point. Mike- 11 replies

If you look at the (front) side of the battery posts you will see a threaded hole facing the outside. You can attach extra wires there to keep the top connection cleaner if needed. The spacers are needed to allow for the recess to keep the connections from binding on the battery body. Make sure the flat spot lines up to keep them from binding. And now I know one of the answers to my question on your other post so I'm back to two. Mike

Hey Jeff, Two questions. I forgot which battery you have in the trike. And as I know nothing about the 2nd gens where does the R/R mount on them? Does the upgrade mount in the same place or did you have to transplant? ok....1, 2, ....er THREE questions. Next time I'll tap my foot. Mike- 11 replies

dummy plug, 12v?
Snaggletooth replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My '84 had the power plug in also and had no wires on it when I got it. I did buy a new jack with a weather cover and wired it up myself directly to the battery. (Don't forget to install a fuse!) Use appropriate wire gauge and fuse for the application you intend. Mike -
