One lil tweak..one BIG mistake.
Snaggletooth replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Exactly! This is the same type of break that happens with the side stand bolt. Folks tighten it and then tighten it some more. It can only go so tight because of the shoulder. It ends up breaking because of stress where the reduction is from the shoulder to the thread size. In most cases the broken off threads section is little more than finger tight. Should be easy to remove the broken threaded section. Access and getting the grip on it is the trick on the cover bolts. -
Rear needle bearing inner race
Snaggletooth replied to frankd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That collar should be fairly easy to slide out. Try a light tap with some pressure. Probably a bunch of gunge holding it in. Don't damage the cage on the bearing! That project was a bear when I replaced the rear bearing. Mike -

Get the Gas out
Snaggletooth replied to rayzar52's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Two easy ways. Remove the fuel line from the petcock and run another piece of line from there to a container. Or ......... remove the fuel line from the feed side of the fuel pump and drain from there. Of course check the tank for rust before proceeding. You don't need Hi Test. Good old regular will be fine BUT add a good dose of Sea Foam to the new gas and let it sit in the carb bowls over night then run the daylight out of it. Mike -

Snaggletooth replied to Zfrebird4's topic in Watering Hole
Ok, easy route here. At your original post select "Edit" then "Go Advanced". Then go to "Manage Attachments". You'll see the pop up window for adding images. Select "Browse" then when that window opens find the file on your "C" drive and highlight that file and click "Open". The selected file will now show in the image column. Click "Upload" and the screen will show the the message "Uploading .... Please wait". When that clears close that window and you should have the thumbnail image showing at the bottom of your post. Click it for a full size. I don't know how large the original image is but I think Don has this to set up to resize automatically. If not shout back. Mike- 2 replies

I had the day off and decided to put the new tires on this morning. And change the oil. And grease the drive shaft. And clean the hub. And check the pads. And do this that and the other. During the process it hits 80 degrees and the sun comes out. About dark I got done and got out long enough to start scuffing up the new shoes. Now I got bugs all over my windscreen. BUGS! In March! Geesh. Mike

Good points. Two things that I think have affected the performance of my AGM is the fact that it has never had a maintainer on it. It never has needed the extra boost even during storage I have the upgrade stator and the upgrade R/R Mosfet also. The system is a solid 14.4 just above idle. With the battery dormant it is always showed 12.8 v. So with all components working properly it all adds up to a reliable system. Mike

As I have had such great performance from the DEKA AGM battery but never had a need to charge it in the 4 years it's been in the bike this thread has raised some good issues. I went back to the folks who were kinda of on the front line when we first were looking at the DEKA AGM's about four years back. I contacted Joshua at Bohannon Battery that answered many questions for us back then and even did a load test between the DEKA 18L and the Odessy that was the hot item at the time. That test showed the DEKA had the higher CCA performance that I was looking for. But I sent Joshua the OP on the "facts" and asked about the best charging method for the AGM. This was his response: "To be honest #9 does not make a lot of sense to me. Regardless of whether or not a battery is lead acid or AGM, it should never be "charged" by an alternator. A vehicle alternator is meant to maintain the charge of the battery, but not fully charge a discharged battery. This puts too much strain on the charging system. Although certain AGM batteries may be charged at rates up to 75% of their rated capacity, the bottom line is, the faster a battery is charged, the hotter the internals get. We never charge a battery by more than 10% of its rated capacity. This is to ensure a long life span. In my opinion the absolute best charger is the Schumacher SE82-6. It has a 6 amp setting for automotive and marine, and a 2 amp setting for lawn and power sport batteries. Its going to charge the battery no matter what the voltage is, and the amps will taper down as the battery charges." So to cut that short, the lower charge rate, 2a is the best level to charge a discharged AGM battery. Expecting to quick jump a battery and expect the alternator system to "charge it" may is an issue. Fully charging the battery before reinstalling it in the bike should be method used. I agree on the Schumacher chargers. I have the SSC 1500 with the 2, 10 and 15a settings. I only use the 2a when charging bike batteries. This charger will read a completely discharged battery and bring it back to a full level. Just info guys, not ammo Mike

Found great little driving lights at Yallmart

What I have I picked up at Menards in the home lighting section. In the 35w: Malibu Brand 35w 12v ML35W16C I picked up some 20w for the heck of it to. 20w: Feit Electric Brand (not my favorite for durability) 20w 12v Flood BAB/CG Both brands were around $3.00 each but that was about a year ago. Go ahead ...... give it a try. First of all my father in law was a Swede and loved the stuff. I discovered this AFTER marrying his daughter. If I had known........ But years back I worked for a food distribution company and every year they had a huge food fair at the civic center here. Around 200 suppliers set up and set out their wares for tasting. I always had to work the main floor and visit each booth and make sure every one was doing ok and kept folks busy. With 200 vendors handing out samples of about every kind of food you can imagine it was not a place for a guy with an appetite. Over three days I'd be punching holes in my belt. The biggest perk for me was at the end of the fair I always had connections that would hand over left overs that had not be used. Cases of it sometimes. Smokes meats, cheeses of every kind, poppers and deli items would be crammed in my fridge when I got home. But every year, every time .... there was one vendor that had almost as much product on hand at the end as they had when the arrived. Yep.... the lutefisk folks. You could tell early on that things were not going well for them as every trash bin within 50 feet of the booth was just well, rank. I have had to eat a handful of Habanero peppers and a couple of onions to reboot my taste buds after eating that stuff. I guess the midwest was not a huge market for those folks. Can't understand why. Mike- 12 replies

I have to ask those that have had AGM batteries fail early in the game what brand they were? With the kind of performance I've had with the DEKA line, four years now with no loss of power, I'm just curious. Mike

Bongo knows who it is but like myself has let his membership to the Venturers club expire. Once that is expired you can not respond to their PM sent within their own system but you still receive the e-mail notice that is was sent to you. I get PM notices every now and then from members there and no way to reply to them. So he's looking for member with dual citizenship that can contact the other party and let them know how to contact him outside their system. We have many here that are current members on both sides. Technology eh? Ain't it great. Mike

If you had Sea Foam in the fuel during storage, and then added more, you will probably be blowing a grayish vapor from the Sea Foam. It seems to clear up a bit when the motor warms up. I got used to the cloud in my garage after the first couple years of that. Kinda had me worried for a while until I figured out what was happening. And as said, after you get the heavy dose of SF out cleaning the plugs will be needed. I usually change my plugs in the spring after I get those first two tanks run out. Mike
