Once you have the headlight trim off you are on your first step to spilting the halves. You see the intake scoop under the head light? Remove the 4 screws holding that on and when you remove that scoop you will see a metal cross strap holding the two halves together. Only one side will need to be disconnected there. That is the only point, with the scoop and the cross strap, where the two halves actually attach to each other. The trick I use (and I do this a lot) is when I remove the mirrors from the bike I reinsert those mirror screws back through the fairing into the fairing subframe. That gives me a hanging point to control the halves as I disconnect all the other screws. Kind of like an exrta set of hands to balance them until I remove those last screws. Works well when reinstalling the fairing also. As far as the collector......somebody will pop in on that. I haven't gone that route yet. (knock wood) Mike

slow cranking first gen
Snaggletooth replied to adventurer 08's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, long time issue. There are pretty much 4 steps to totally cure the problem. The heavier battery cable upgrade. The starter ground mod documented by Dingy (only needed for 2 brush starters) Replacing the 2 brush starter with a later model 4 brush. (You can skip step 2) Changing the battery to a DEKA AGM. Once you get these done you can be happy for a long time. -
Some people can't appreciate the products this company offers but if Id had one of these years back I might still be married. :rotf: Ahh... no.... probably not. But it cracks me up anyway. http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=10&zenid=bvh4343hbvggs4oall8vdu9i04

I know, I'm not the first one, or be the last to gripe about cagers that just got to squeeze you out of your lane or just get too danged close while trying to pass on the road. It's disturbing and it's all too often. But wait! There is a product out there that will help deter those who like to run snug against you. Maybe not stop 'em but at least a reminder to them that you have met. Well in our minds anyway. But I want a couple. (Yep, I had one of those days on the Interstate again. The old Snag was showing his teeth today) http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=55&zenid=bvh4343hbvggs4oall8vdu9i04 Mike

There are a bunch of ways to mount cameras. Just consider the view you would like to see. I used a "Snagglestud" with an old clamp off a set of Hiway bars and mounted the stud to the crashbars. Gives a low view point that adds to the impression of speed when shooting vids. Having the front tire in the shot enhances the shot with movement. I see Brian used the same perspective in his video. And why run at the back of the pack to catch the other bikes when you can shoot them from the front. I used the same mounting point with the camera reversed on the stud. (It's favored by the 1st gen guys so they can keep track of the 2nd gens they pass.) There, it's done. Had to get the jab in there someplace. Mike

I've got the Drift HD170 also. One of my concerns with where I mount the camera was lens damage. I found one of these that eliminates that problem. Not to mention easier to clean the bugs off. Mike

Here's an easier one for ya. Only two LED bulbs in the first pic when I tried them. Then four in the second pic. Isn't hard to tell by color alone as the red is much deeper and they really stand out at night. Even in the day light they are quite noticable. And the lil 5 LED bulbs are mounted sideways so they don't give to full effect as much as they would pointing towards the rear. Been in the bike now for 3 seasons with no failures. I used to replace 2 or 3 194's every summer.

You should be happy with them. Most LED lights are pretty tough. I have used http://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/led-vehicle-replacement-bulbs/ for most all of my lights on the bike and car and had no trouble with them at all. I don't know what application you're using them for but the placement of the bulb can make a big difference. If it's pointing straight to the rear of vehicle it may not look all that bright unless it has a decent reflector in the housing. That style light throws most the light sideways. I used this wedge style W5's in my marker lights on the bike where the sockets point to the side and they are are quite bright. The second light has the LEDs chips on the sides and appears brighter. The one tail/brake light I prefer is the "Spider" light. Intense but it needs a lot of room. Let us know how they work out for you. Mike

The things you find when you buy used...
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
I found something else yesterday while working on the Tag-Along. Apparently HF provides PolyLock nuts with the kit. I was changing some things on the trailer and when I removed a nut I noticed it was on backwards, as in poly side first. I got to looking closer and found EVERY PolyLock nut was the same way. Installed poly side first. I've bent wrenches for a long time and it cracked me up as from my experience, that ain't easy to do. The PO had to of invested a lot of time and effort to have got them all on. You would think that after fighting the first one the guy might have looked for a easier way. After all..... it's only got two sides right. Found a few other things that apparently he didn't bother to look at the parts diagrams on either. Like the bolts to attach the body to the frame. Bolt, two washers, rubber padding, into the body and through the frame and the nut (poly side first) Stuff like that gets me to chuckling. It's wrong, but it's funny. -
Just be glad it didn't blow up. I feel for ya Karl. I really do. It was 8 months ago when I damaged the membrane in my elbow. You got off easy. It sucks, and it's painful as all get out. If you aren't the quesy type.... read this thread. I'm not EVEN going to show you the pics. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66817 It was still about 6 months and I was still having trouble using my arm the was I used to. Takes a long time for that to heal up so don't push it. Can't blame ya for having a sip or two but I got to agree, probably not a good time if your doing meds. Take care. Mike

Does not want me to wear any other patch while on a chapter ride
Snaggletooth replied to YamaDuck's topic in Watering Hole
I'm not a club member to any other than this lively bunch of nuts but I'd call BS on that. Then again, I'm not a big fan of being told what I can ride or wear. I had a director at my company tell me I could not have a PGR support patch on my own wind breaker while on store property. He didn't care much for my answer to that comment very much and the patch remains to this day. I think your guy has his head too close to the tailpipe myself. You're being treated like a prospect. Poor Running issue??
Snaggletooth replied to af226's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It does sound like your'e still dealing with fuel starvation. With sitting that long the Sea Foam may not fix everything. Keep after the treatment letting the SF sit in the carbs for a time and see what clears up. Mine sat 9 years before I bought it and SF bought it around... almost. Still had to pop the carbs to get it done right. The plugs should be burning a nice tan color when running right. The black shows rich fuel mix. BUT !!! With the heavy SF treatments it does foul the plugs badly. Everything the SF remove ends up where? Burning onto the plugs. I see mraf just mentioned the diaphragms. Be a good thing to check out. The bike will run worse with the air box cover and and like he said.... face out of the way!! It will pop back though the carbs. I would check the fuel level settings on the carbs to and find out if that is low on any or all of them. Low fuel level will do the same thing you are talking about. Checking fuel bowl level is an easy trick with a short piece of clear air line and a male/male adaptor to plug into the carb drain line. No need to pull them off for that. But it will tell you where you are at with that issue. Mike -

I'm wired and lit up and registered to be that way
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
Yep, they're in there. In that pic the bike is laying on the side stand so it look a lil off. The day I went to pick up the trailer I couldn't get the coupler to drop over the ball. Period! I had to remove the coupler and spread it a bit to get it hooked up. The PO didn't install any washers so it was crimped in pretty good. The latch will become pinched when the coupler is tightened down without the washers. Won't move at all without a pry bar. Drops like it should now. I got it home and checked the coupler and latch and it was fine. Installed a washer on each side and it works like a charm now. One handed hook up now. The PO created a lot of problems for himself putting the kit together. I can see why he never pulled it and traded it off. If I wasn't familiar with some of the issuse brought up by HF owners here I probably would have passed on this one myself. Glad I didn't. Mike -

The PO had a metal plate hanger already mounted. I don't know if that was the OEM one from HF or not but it looks a lot tougher than the plastic one that came with the HF LED kit. That one is in the trash already. Will be looking into your idea for sure. Thanks. Mike -

Yeah ...... I thought it would be the same size as a MC plate. Silly me. -
I started that thread a while back on "The things you find" and it just kept going the farther I got into the New/Used HF Tag-Along I bought a while back. The PO had to be one creative bugger to get the kit as far as he did. But then he did get rid of it before going anywhere and I got a pretty good idea of why he did now. The wiring..... geesh! I think he used a drill and razor wire to fish the harness through the frame. I couldn't go 2 feet of wire without finding a chewed up or broken wire patched with ScotchLocks with the bare ends hanging out inside the frame. In the end I had to replace the entire trailer harness and considering the mods to the taillight housings he did, I broke down and bought the HF LED kit and installed it. At least the LEO's won't be shaking my tree for a license plate light being out. That sucker lights up with the LED's. But after installing the new harness, shielded with harness wrap, and soldering and shrink wrapping every connection from the 5/4 converter all the way to the tail lights I'm sure it will serve me well for quite a while. Still need to tuck in some rubber grommets where the harness goes through the frame but that's a quick fix. Got the 5/4 wire converter tucked in by the frame under the seat. Piece of cake hooking that up. I hooked the side markers and rear tails to the marker lights on my switch panel. That way I can kick the lights on all the way around without the key in the bike. Had one moment there where I was ready to panic because the four ways weren't working until I remembered I hadn't hooked up the brake light wire yet. Whew! I don't like loose wires on my bike so I added a plug holder on the rear light bar for easy access. Nice clean connection. I got the rubber hose installed on the rear spring bolts. New zerks are in. Coupler has been bent back to the original shape and washers installed. One handed hookup now. Siliconed in the frame plugs, or at least three of them. Missing one so that search is on. Cleaned off the Vaseline that HF uses off the wheel bearings and packed them with High Temp and set the bearings. Got my Nebraska trailer plate mounted. Note the size of that thing. I never noticed the bike plates here before but that sucker is gonna cause some serious drag. Suppose I should mount another plate on the other side so it don't lean. Going to make some mini mudflaps for the trailer tires. Need somewhere to mount some of those lil chrome nekked ladies. Well, looking at that pic maybe I won't need mudflaps with that big ol plate hanging there. My friend (The Piper) that pinstriped my helmet last year stopped by and was eyeballing the trailer. I know what he's thinking......He was grinning. So I miss anything? I'm going to have to go out and drag it around now and check out. Looks like it's gonna rain. Guess I'll find out how water proof it is. Mike

CV carb slide bounce
Snaggletooth replied to Gojira's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The closer to perfect the better in my book. The fit to the intake boots was the first problem I had on mine getting them seated properly. The "Sandwich Board" solved that. The biggest plus was as many times I had the the rack off the bike was it helped keep all the linkage adjustments pretty close to where I started from. Once I got the hang of it the sync would barely change between teardown to reinstall. I've used the gizmo to trouble shoot racks as soon as they came off the bike when someone else was having problems getting them to seat and seal up. Clamp it in and loosen the screws and they bodies would shift. Tighten them down and put them back on. Worked pretty well and saves time. As you know and understand, the point of getting each axis spot on has great benifits. Everything works in sync like it should and no binding of linkages. Sound a bit anal? Probably. It just makes it easier for me. Mike For a guy doing it one time I'd say the counter top would work fine if they pay attention to the levels of each body. When you do it a lot, every trick helps. -
Happy Birthday Earl!!!! All the time we spent doing PM's last night and if I'd known I would have tormented ya then. Maybe than explains it..... And I'm using a larger font today for your present. (I already sent ya money) Enjoy your day and take the time to relax for a bit. Mike
