Big Bird Watchers.... need an opinion.
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
Can't blame the birds. Some will try to eat anything and some can't handle living in the city. -
Plugged at that point is good on those. Yep. In the pic you'll see the bowl drain screw, the one on the right side with the arrow. Loosen that screw and that opens the flow from the bowls through the black line you're talking about. NOTE: Not a good time to suck on at line. If you get fuel from that line, you have fuel in the carb bowl. If not, your plugged at the float needle or behind it. Don't overtighten it when you close it.

Being where I am in Nebraska I can almost toss the Osprey out of the picture. Almost. With the Missouri river, and the larger local lakes including DeSoto Bend Refuge just across the river we do see a lot of birds not known to be native to the area. The Bald Eagle is the most common here along the river and are seen nesting quite often. But the bald does have the darker body. A younger one can be mistaken for a young Golden. Judging only by size and distance it may well have been a young eagle but the the Hawk seems most likely in the area. When they were looking for their missing cat the daughter told her mom that she saw it fly away with a big bird. Folks weren't buying that for a second. City folks ya know. I feel bad for the kid. At least she didn't understand it was a pickup for take out. -

Nice try, but I'm not even in the pics. -
I'll go with an informed opinion on this one. Back in November I was backing out of the garage and noticed something at the corner. Saw some movement and had the camera handy in the case in the handlebars so I tried to grab a pic or two but the distance is about 50 feet and only had a few seconds to get a pic. Wasn't quite sure what I was seeing but it looked like a bit of a dustup between the bird and another animal on the ground. Now, hawks are common around here, always around. But in November eagles are in the area also. This was a fairly good sized bird and the photos are not very clear. Any guess as what this might be? I paid this no mind until last night while talking to a neighbor and he brought up a story his young daughter had told him last fall about their missing cat. He thought she was full of it but I remembered the pics I took. Either way,..... it's quite possible his kids story is spot on. I go with hawk but the coloring has me wondering. So what you think? Hawk or a young eagle?

No matter how many times I read what I posted I can't see where I condemed ALL aftermarket seals as bad. I mentioned ONE brand with a known problem with fit. There have been posts in the past with fit issues and install problems on fork seals so my statement was simple. Buyer be informed. I always prefer and recommend factory seals for high wear usage just as many other do. Always have. -

Don't forget the carb diaphragm kit from Sirius. Another must do. http://www.siriusconinc.com/search_result.php?make=&model=&part=&partno=SD1X4&search=search&x=26&y=14 Do a fuse box upgrade to blade type fuses early on and save yourself some trouble shooting. On fork seals, go with factory seals. There have been issues with some aftermarket ones. The name Pyramid (?) comes to mind. Too thick. The breather, filter only can run from Emgo (on eBay) to K&M's. Depends on what you want to spend. The poplular R/R upgrade is the Shindengen Mosfet. Several threads around on that subject. Throw a new higher output stator in front that and you're good to go. Swap to a 4 brush starter. THE cure for hot start problem.. We got the suggestions.............. We got the answers.................. And if you ask for advice....................... Ya gone and done did it now. Seriously though.......... we do try to help. -
Oil Change Question
Snaggletooth replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Any of these should work and I think a few others have been found to work also. As long as it's the shorter type it's fine. A plier type filter wrench will be handy to remove the old one. No room for filter end cap socket and some strap wrenches don't fit in there either. It is close with the cross member. forks are limp
Snaggletooth replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Actually you can avoid a lot of the fight putting the fork cap back in. Once the springs are in, cut the spacer so it just comes to the top of the extended tubes, even a little below. As you start the the cap and tighten it the thickness of the cap alone will add a bit of preload. It save the fight. You can always add washers later if you need to boost the preload. -

Ignitor unit difference?
Snaggletooth replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The '83 was different only as far as the timing response on it I belive. It still will run the bike fine and get you home, just not at the same preformance level as a 41R. I swapped an '83, 26H to my '84 to try it and it worked fine for a backup. For what you want to use it for you should be fine. There was at one time a thread around here on the details of the difference. -
Nebraska requires a plate and I registered mine. They will stop and check here also.

Just curious. Did the load test do a printout of the results? I had one done a while back that showed the status of the battey and a summary of the "Battey Health". Battery tested as good, showed 12.7 volts and CCA's were still high but the "Health" was only about 25%. Not good.

forks are limp
Snaggletooth replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, at 18" those are stock OEM springs. The Progressives are as long as the stock spring AND the long metal spacer AND a heavier coil. I could drive my old forks to the bottom just by jumping up and down on the pegs before changing to the Progressives. Don't even want to talk about hitting the front brakes hard before the change. -
Oil Change Question
Snaggletooth replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Been doing mine every 3,000 miles since I got it 32,000 milas ago. If the bike sits in the cold weather for any length of time over winter storage I change it in the spring before I ride for the season. Kind of a anti-condensation measure. The bike is at almost at 68,000 miles now and holding up fine. I know some people argue the new oils can go much longer without breaking down but so far, as I know, oil still gets dirty as fast as it used to. -
Muffler turndown tips install?
Snaggletooth replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep, they didn't start putting the attachment tabs on the muffler until '86, MKII, All 1st gen pipes have the same tip shape so the turn downs fit them all, you just have to get creative on how and where to hook up some springs. -
gonna miss this one. Haven't even re-installed it on my cell yet. Next time.

YEA!! A wheeeeeeelie bar!!!!

As said, as short as possible without hitting anything, The longer the stinger the more leverage against the front suspension, causing a reduction of front traction. Teter totter effect.
