1st gen gas tank "rack" chrome.
Snaggletooth replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The tank rack is a rare and wonderful thing to have. Not available for the VR anymore unless someone knows of a cross reference from another type of bike. There was one on eBay a while back and I think it brought over $150.00 bucks. It was the only one I've ever seen on eBay. It was not stock equipment. -
42/48 solo. But then again, I'm not so skinny and my normal copilot is only 120 lbs.

I've got about 6,000 miles on my Avons now. I found them a little greasy in the twisties when I first got them but after a couple hundred miles the scuffing is a LOT wider than it was then and they have never let me down in the curves. I have ridden in some of the worst storms we have seen here in the midwest and they are probably the best wet surface tire I have ever used. Spend some time leaning that bike through the curves and they will come around. If you only have a couple of inches wide of scuffing they aren't broken in yet. LOL! And check that tire pressure on a regular basis. A few pounds make a hell of a difference on these tires.

A lot of blondes out there from what I've seen on the club sites. They keep telling me that blue is the fastest color but I haven't seen one yet so I figure they are still somewhere behind me. LOL!

Remove TCI
Snaggletooth replied to mtman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yep. What George said. Now if ya happen to have the carbs out it's really easy. But that's not a very good short cut. LOL! When I had mine apart I pulled mine and checked it and sealed the case. I replaced the phillips with SS allen head flange bolts so when the time comes to remove or replace it I can get it out with a 1/4 inch drive set and a swivel on the extension. Much easier to get a grip on. The resealing the case made a huge difference in mine. I've been out in some nasty storms this summer and it never acted up again. -
Hey Craig. Keep an eye open for me. The first pic was after I had the bike for a while and added all the shiny stuff. I had the lowers off in that pic as I was dinking with the carbs before rebuilding them. The second was right after I had finished all the restoration work. Worked out pretty good for a garage find that had been stored for 9 years. You'll see me somewhere. It's a daily rider. Well it was until the bonehead slashed my brake lines. Later Mike

Wait a minute.....did somebody say Omaha? Never heard that before here. Hang on.....let me check......yep! I still live in Omaha. At first I thought you might have been the mystery Black Cherry I've been seeing around town but it don't look like it. Blue and Black right? But then again you might as well know I ride a 1st gen so you'd have to keep up. LOL! Have touch base at least. Not many Ventures in this neck of the woods. Mine is down for now as some joker felt the need to cut my front brake lines at work the other day but got parts headed this way to fix that. Pop back in if you're still around. Mike

Congrats there Pitbull. Glad to hear it happened for you. Been though that game myself. It's a sad world where these companies think the seasoned hand isn't worth the time of day over a fresh out of the wrapper newbie. It took my company 3 years to ask me "Are you STILL interested in that position?" Worked out ok for me. Hope yours takes you where you want to go. I'll met Mom is excited about it.

Hey Condor. Glad it brought you a chuckle. Sounds like you needed one. Sounds like the crew over at Mac hasn't been as forthcoming as they have been in the past. But it's got to happen pretty soon. My tape of the sound byte is getting ragged from playing it all the time. So we shall see what happens by the end of the month. Hang in there.

Condor......you're a warhorse my man. Of all the projects that you have taken on this sounds like it has given you the most grief. I for one and I'm sure the others guys involved here appreciate the effort you have put into this. You pulled together a great deal and we knew in the beginning that it was going to be a build process. That is rarely a fast one. So my on this is this: Us, the "Investors" Condor for the last few weeks" Condor talking with the people at Mac: Still better than the stock market! Thanks Condor!

I played around with trying different wires while I doing my rebuild. I found that going to an 8mm wire caused a few problems with fitting the plug caps and coil caps. I would have had to shave down the outside of the wires or modify the caps to get them to fit properly. The 7mm solid copper core wires are workhorse material. They stand up well. I can't see any reason to change them to anything else. I picked up bulk wire from NAPA and new plug caps from the local bike shop along with new NGK plugs. My only change from stock has been going to the non-resistor plugs. Seem to last a little longer IMHO. Wire and caps were less than $20.00. Can't beat that.

Gravity
Snaggletooth replied to Principal's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
uhh......wait a minute. Did I get that right? He said, "vibrations must have moved it". He was talking about a Royal Star right? -
Some how I get the feeling this story is going to end up on the Viking website. I'm gonna stay tuned for this one since I have such a great love for hospitals myself.

What the problem is on the E2 and other E codes is the solder is cracking on the pins where the wiring plugs in to the CLASS control module. Remove the module from the panel and open it up. Gently remove the flat cable that ties the two havles together. You will see the small pins in the board that the plug attaches to. On the back side of the board look really close at where the pins are mounted and you will more than likely see very fine cracks around the some of the pins or all. Stress and vibration at its best. A lite touch with a soldering iron and resin core solder will fix that right up. I do mean a lite touch. Heat the iron, coat with solder and just enough time on the pin to melt the old and apply the new. I did mine 3,000 miles ago and it worked like a charm. No more codes. It's a really simple fix and it does the job. Oh, and if you feel the need to clean the circuit board of dust or what ever, use a hair paint brush! The nylon ones can create static and like any circuit board you want to avoid that.

Cool! Now I take it that Bummer still has the last say on what the tat will be and where the ink goes. This could get interesting.

Pitbull, I'm impressed! You put together a great site and I like your no holds barred way of putting things in writing. Your Florida trip was one of the best told road stories I read in years. I made many bike trips from Omaha to the West coast in my younger years and every trip was an adventure in itself. Your story made those trips fresh in my mind again. One of the things that I got a chuckle out of was your comments on the heavy winds and then turning to run with it. I remember doing a run like that and lighting up a smoke at about 70 MPH and the smoke hung between me and the windshield forever. Dead silence except for the sound of the pipes. The stangest sensation. And congrats on having a woman like Mom in your life. Women like that are a rare find indeed these days. She's a keeper but it sounds like you figured that out years ago. Best wishes for her on a full recovery and being back on the road WOT! I'll be watching for your updates for the site and articules in TR. Hopefully we will cross paths in the future. I'd like to say I met up with you at some point in time. Snaggletooth

trip odo reset rubber ?
Snaggletooth replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Somebody somewhere had mentioned one time that they had used the rubber pushbutton cover out of a Coleman flashlight and glued it onto the dash to cover the reset button. Sounds like a fix as the OEM isn't available.
