Hey MikeC. When I bought my '84 back a couple of years ago I had a grand time getting my brakes working right after 9 years of being in storage by the PO. What I found was the PO had opened up the proportioning valve for whatever reason and then failed to reassemable it in the proper order. Created all kinds of havoc and headaches for me. With much help and advice from several boards I found info on the correct way to install the goofed up order of things. And belive me, there are several ways to put that valve back together. LOL! But during the process of trial and error and waiting for more info to come to me I had reassmbled the valve without any of the inner workings. (cups, spring, retainers and spool) The valve is designed to divide the fluid pressure at 30% to the rear and 70% to the left front. Without the inner workings it should have been in theroy, about equal to both ends of the system. I rode it this way for quite a while and found the rear brake did tend to lock up sooner than it did after the valve was correctly reassembled. After getting the valve back to spec I found that the rear felt weaker and the bike did tend to want to wag its tail in a hard braking situation. (parking lot experiment, on wet pavement) I've been riding the last 6,000 miles with the proportioning valve as it was designed, but has considered removing the inner working over the winter to get the rear brake back to what I had before. I had given thought to delinking the brakes and going to the old school, front is front and back is back but tossed the idea after much conversation with folks who had done the that. The pic here is the parts that were removed during the learning process. Just remember, if ya take it apart, pay damn close attention to the order it come out in. There is only ONE way it will work right and ten ways to put the parts back in. LOL! Maybe 12? I lost count but I got really good at pulling master cylinders. Mike

It is nuts. My 16 year old daughter went with a friend and her parents today to Younkers. She had found a jacket in her size and was taking it off the rack when an older woman tried to grab it out of her hands and elbowed her in the face. The friends parents brought her home and were in shock. They couldn't belive what happened. She has a 3/4 inch long cut on her eyebrow. She needed a stitch. All for a damned jacket.

Haven't forgot about you guys. Still got a few more boxes to go through. Thought maybe I'd label them with what's in them as a I go along this time. DUH! Never thought I'd have this much backstock for a bike in my life. Hope something breaks soon so I can use some of this stuff. (jinx) I didn't say that.- 7 replies

Umm....one guy needs a right and one guy needs a left. I think I can help here. I have an extra set in the basement that fit my '84 and I belive they are the same for the years you guys have. Let me check my numbers and see if they are and see what I paid for them and maybe I can help both of you out. I can beat the daylights out of $58.00 bucks! They are both in good shape and the louvers are fine. I'll need to check the mounting tabs to be sure. I'll PM both of you before Sunday if your are interested. Mike- 7 replies

Hey Mike! How's that velvet seat of yours holding up? I need to recover mine this winter and I keep looking at the pics you posted of the one you did. I'm twisting my own arm on this one. Mike -

Riding without air is not advisable. It will beat the shock to death and not good for handling control. You could rework the air lines and install a schrader (?) valve, like a in a tire valve and use a hand pump to adjust the pressure to your needs. There are a few folks here that have gone that route I believe. Maybe someone will jump in on that subject. I'd go with a really really good wash up with baking soda and water to remove the acidity before getting too up close and personal with the repairs. -
It was 12 degrees here in Omaha this morning when I headed to work. The boss saw my bike in the lot and asked me when the last time I was drug tested was. LOL! But it had warmed up to 28 degrees by the time I got off work so I took the scenic route on the way home.

Years ago there was an ad running in the back of several magazines. It advertised that for only $1 they would send you a, get this......"A empty 4"x4" cardboard box." It aways made me chuckle to wonder how may people bought an empty box. Years later I found out the person who ran the ad worked for a box company that had accidently made 20,000 boxes that were a bit under spec for a client. He had accquired the entire bunch pretty much for the asking. When asked what it all cost him.....his answer was "postage and envelopes, but I recovered that." He sold them all in less than a year.

Ouch! Sounds like the quick solder fix is out the window. Get ahold of AtlantaDragonslayer on this site. I think he might have something that you can use. I think. Maybe. I think he was been playing with reconditioning some old ones. If not, they do show up on eBay pretty regular. How much other stuff took a hit from the acid. Body panels take a hit? Mike -

First question is what is the controler doing.....or not doing? A lot of problems with this are easy to fix with a quick soldering job. Mike -
Time for a meet and eat.....Honey glazed ham would be good about now.

Glad to hear that! I did my years on the OTR circuit running the CanAm and that can be a bear in bad weather. Been watching your posts. Glad he's ok. Mike

I like the idea of flipping the pins, shirts and what not to return the money back to the St. Judes fund. It would make a good foundation for the next drive.

Condor, I'm in no hurry. If you want to wait them out I have no problem with that. Hell man, we've come this far. My season is over anyway from the looks of the freezing drizzle we're getting anyway. What ever you decide to do is cool with me but I have no problem with waiting a while longer.

Hey ya Pain! Still SOL on any relief from the PIA huh? It's a slow process for sure. Kids are creative aren't they? My daughter was about 9 or ten when I had my "incident". It didn't take long for her to figure out my attachment to that damned foam rubber donut and that became her target. Little things like putting something like a tennis ball in the middle and covering it with a blanket. Or her best effort ever was putting it in the freezer all night. That one backfired a bit as I started doing in myself after a couple of times. I can't say that it helped but the frost burn took my mind off the tail section. LOL! And don't give up on the romantic adventures my friend. All the screaming and yelling will probably get you some high fives and a few free rounds of drinks from your buds in the neighborhood at the local watering hole. Let them think that's the reason you walk funny! They don't have to know. LOL! So how's the dog holding up? Snaggletooth -
Gosh.....I'm touched there Tom. I'm sure I'll be thinking of you when I'm layering up my thermies tomorrow morning when it's in the 20's again and the wind is kicking up at 20 MPH. I love Nebraska. Sun burn and frost bite are possible on the same day. I just wish we had some scenic routes.

Just remember Condor.....it's the thrill of the hunt that makes the kill worthwhile. Well, that was my best comforting speech. How ya feeling now? Better? I suppose you can see why I'm not a therapist. Hang in there. It's gonna happen. Soon. This year. Sigh.

So what are these jokers saying Condor? They said a couple of weeks ago they were going to be cutting and bending the next week. They change their story?

Now that's an insult! We have corn, cows, corn, more corn, some more cows, lots more corn and different colored cows. We have hills with trees, hills with sand, and hills of dirt. We have rivers and rivers with bridges over them. And some rivers have sandbars in them! What do these people want anyway? Nebraska, The Good Life. Boring.......But Good. That's why I ride In IOWA! They have scenic byways!
