MegaMax Gel Battery
Snaggletooth replied to BigMark7's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey ya Josh. Thanks for the info. I'm happy with the ETX18L that I got from you. Tough lil critter. I installed it in the bike when it arrived and it sure spun the engine well. I've been working on the bike a lot and been cranking and running lights while making repairs. The battey has got a good work out just in the garage. I haven't had the bike running so no charge to the battery. It's been a few weeks and when I hooked up my digital volt meter today the battery still showed 12.8 volts just like the day it arrived. I put my tester on it an it showed it was at 100% charge. Good rebound. I have no regrets at all on the ETX18L. -

DIY Switch Panel For The 1st Gens
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
Not a problem. It's a standard steel spacer. I have a new Ace Hardware store next to where I work. Two isles of those fancy little drawers that pull out and are filled with all the pieces we will ever need. They got boxes of plastic spacers, nylon spacers, steel spacers and yes Virginia.....they have CHROME spacers to! 1/8" spacers to 2" spacers. God! I'm starting to sound like Bubba from Forrest Gump. Any hardware store should carry them. -
Well Sue, glad ya got a chuckle out of it. I have to admit my daugther and I had a good laugh to. For a while. I laid out the cover to to dry about 1:00 PM today. It's now about 10:30 PM and Curly is still laying next to it. My daughter carried her upstairs this evening and the darn critter went right back downstairs. When I asked her what we could do to get Curly away from it her suggestion was "lets bury it in the back yard." My new cover! Oh hell no! She also suggested changing the cats name to "Bay Watch".

One of things that I have wanted to add to my '84 was more switches to control extra lighting and power for other toys. As you all know the 1st gen is lacking in any flat panel spaces to really do a clean and accessable install in the cockpit area. I'd seen the Kuryakyn Master Cylinder switch panel and I thought there had to be a way to install something without obstructing anything on the controls. So I went digging in my odds and ends and after a quick trip to Radio Shack and a stop at the hardware store this is what I came up with. No mods to the bike, controls, panels or handle bars. This will mount by changing one bolt. Parts needed: (1) Radio Shack Project box. I used a 4x2x1 model. Part # 270-1802 (1) 10mm x 1.25 pitch x 2" stainless bolt. (2) 3/8 washers (an extra couple for spacing if you like) (3) On/Off switches / your choice, just watch that they are not too big. (1) Steel spacer / 1" long x 3/8 I.D. Just needs for the bolt to go through it. (1) 1/2 I.D. rubber grommet. (3 ft) Plastic wiire loom casing or wrap. (4) Small self tapping machine screws. Of course wire, terminals, sealant, and a few zip ties. And maybe a beer. Tools: A drill with a bit the size of the switch studs. All my holes were 3/8. A Dremel is great but a small file or Exacto knife will do fine. And either wire crimpers or a soldering gun. First things first and I'll try to keep the pics in the right order to follow along. Open up the project box and remove the metal top panel and lid. The metal panel is meant to be the top plate for the box. I mounted it on the bottom to reinforce that where the bolt will go through. It will fit over the bumps on the bottom of the box so just drill small holes in the center of the bumps and attach it with the self tapping machine screws. Set up how you want your switches to lay. Mark your holes and carefully (my box is ABS) and drill the proper size holes for the switch studs. Now drill a 3/8 hole in the bottom of the case (and metal plate) for the mounting bolt. Check your placement on the bike but about dead center is good. Don't install the switches yet. There will be some ridges inside the box. You will need to grind or file them down so the switch retaining nuts will seat flat. Again, check your postion on the bike and decide where you want the wires to exit the box. Drill a hole and install a rubber grommet. It needs to be large enough to slip the wiring loom casing though it. Ok, slip the 10mm bolt through the hole from the inside before you install the switches. Check for clearence at the terminal studs to prevent shorting them on the bolt head. Slip a washer over the bolt, then the 1" spacer and another washer. Ok, now where to mount it? Look at the clutch master cylinder and see where the mute button in bolted on. The Royales should all have that, the standards may not. Which ever model you have there will be a blind 10mm hole in the body of the master. Remove the bolt and install the assembly with the new bolt there. Use washers to adjust the height so it clears the mute control. It will be above the master clyinder cover so you can open that to added fluid without removing the new panel. Adjust the position to your liking an tighten the bolts. I'm using star lock washers to hold it in place. Now you can install the switches and wiring. Before replacing the plastic cover make sure you have room for the inner lip to clear the nuts on the switches. I had to do a little grinding. A little sealant around the cover and were the wires drop out should keep the inside dry. I drilled a very small weep hole in the lowest corner of mine. So that is pretty much it. Don't look to bad, in a good location for the left hand, it don't interfer with anything else and should hold up real well. Paint or finish it to your needs. I had most the stuff laying around so cost was under $12.00 for what I had to pick up. If you had to buy it all maybe under $30.00. Maybe this will solve some problems for a few folks. Just a DIY day around here. Good luck. (An added note: I bought another project box and took the metal plate from it and polished it to a high gloss to go on the top of my finished panel. Looked real nice. Rode for about half and hour and went home and painted it flat black. Worse than a chrome gas cap.) Mike

Hey SilvrT. This is what I came up with. You do something similar? I might put something together to show how it came together. Pretty simple and only needed to change to a longer bolt and spacer to mount it up. Pardon the bike. I got it opened up to do stator and other upgrades. I'm looking forward to having it in one piece again.

I've been to Montana..........Where the women are scarce and the sheep are veerry nervous. But back to the serious side. What? Where? I picked up a bottle of Woolite today and figured I might as well get it over with. Filled up the wash tub with warm water and mixed in the Woolite. Got out some towels and made a kind of frame out of styrofoam to dry the cover on. Going pretty good so far. I took the lambskin out of the bag and I notice I had company. Our cat, Curly, was more than a little interested in the cover. So I laid it down for her and she sniffed, pawed and poked at it for a while. Seemed ok with it. No fight broke out anyway. Now it started getting a little crazy when I picked up the cover and dropped it in the tub. Curly suddenly went nuts. She was up on the edge of the tub looking at the cover as it went under and prancing back and forth. The look of stunned shock on her face was priceless. It got worse as I started working the water into the cover and holding it under. The damn cat started nipping at my wrists as I tried to hold the cover under. I kept pushing Curly off the edge and she started biting my ankles. I had to stop and put her out of the room. She was sitting on the other side of the door screaming and pulling on the bottom of the door. My daughter came to see what was going on opened the door and Curly blasted back in and was clawing at the cover in the tub. Looked like she was trying to pull it out of the water. My daughter was laughing so hard she was worthless to help me control the cat. I finally got both of them out of the room and finshed the wash job. Took it and ran it through a rinse and spin cycle in the washer to get the Woolite and most the water out of it. Curly didn't see that part. Thank God for that much. So now the the cover is sitting on the styrofoam frame to dry. It's been there for 2 hours now. Curly has not left it for a second since I put it there. Every time I walk by she flattens her ears and hisses at me. I see the look in her eyes. Murderer! I will say that when I go to bed tonight the cat WILL NOT be in my room and the door will be locked. She's giving me the creeps. You're next furball! As soon as the Band Aides come off! I hope I don't have to wash this thing too often. I'm just not up to this kind of stress. By the way.......the cover looks good. Maybe now I can wear my thong when I ride. Geese! Did I say that out loud?

This is why I love this site! Another weird and twisted mind at work. Where else can you find so many of them in one place? And I was afraid that I would be old and alone riding down the highway singing "There Will Never Be Another Ewe". 'puc.............come in on the chorus ok. Now I'm going to have nightmares about wet lambs. Baaaah, baaaaaah my pretties. Soon you will be mine.

Very cool. Glad she got her cat home. I remember how heart broken my daughter was when we lost her first cat. Now prepare yourself for those long, cold, evil stares from the cat when it comes home from the vet. They remember who drove them there. For a long, long time.

Just had to look didn't you? Baaaa! Ok. Here's the deal. I bought a Hartco Lambskin seatcover. Nice addition for those long rides. I bought it used so no care instructions and I've been googling up care and cleaning info on lambskin. It's seems to be a toss up between dry cleaning and machine or hand wash with Woolite or a simliar cleaner. The Hartco site only refers to toweling it dry after riding in the rain so I'm looking for more info. Anybody got info on keeping one of these things nice and soft? Mike

Hey Bongo! Guess what I found on the visor of my car today? The check I had for you for the master cylinder shipping. My apologies. It's going out ASAP. Probably still be there if the sun hadn't come out.

I took the opt out to. I didn't care for the new set up. But I was just checking the trouble shooting info on eBay and they retired the old version on April 13th. So they are trying to convert the systems to cross reference between the two. Even though I rebuilt my searches it may be in limbo for a while. At least the problem seems to be on their end. Whew. Probably not me for a change. LOL!

Anybody else having this problem on eBay? For the last two days I have not been able to select the sort catagory for my searches. I log in and everything works as normal but when I go to my saved search and open it I get the "Best Match" catagory as usual, then when I try to select any other sort catagory it just cycles for a few seconds and dies. DOA! It's doing that on every search I have and I have deleted my searches and re-entered new ones with the same result. I've rebooted, virus scanned, washed and cleaned and not seeing what could cause this. Any ideas?

Sight glass repair

You could have at least used a Bufflao Head! -
I check eBay listing pretty much every day. I buy mostly NOS items that are for my stock of items that will be needed when something wears out. I have parts and price info my system so I know what the part is worth and set a limit for my bids. And yes some to the prices and insane! I see stuff that you can still order from the dealers for for 3 times what it worth. If I can't get it for my limit, I'll wait for another. I've been burned with some junk stuff a couple of times as I wasn't paying attention. Ask the seller questions and look real close at the pics. I just bought an item that had 4 pics posted. When I received it there was a broken weld that wasn't shown at any angle in the pics. Good photography.....bad seller. And I had asked him about the condition before I bid. Good answer, my bad. I wasn't specific on the welds so another lesson for me. As far as bringing up a hot item here......if I know somebody is looking for that part I'll shoot them a PM. That is if I don't want it. LOL! I've been slapped a couple of times when I mentioned something I bought and it ended up I was bidding against another member. Sorry guys....... I bought an item a few weeks ago that was NOS. Something I wanted for a while but not available anymore. It was a Buy it Now listing and it had just popped up while I was searching. I took one look and bought it for about 1/2 of what it sold for in the '80's. The seller contacted me and said there were 35 people watching it when I bought it and it had only been posted for about 20 minutes. Buyers were contacting him asking what happened to the item. Well......it sold. When it's something you want......shoot from the hip. But if we start posts for every decent item we see on eBay, we will just bidding against each other and wasting time looking here. Just my

Just was talking with Rick the other day. Sounds like he's up to arm pits with business and they are setting up to start production of another run of 1st gen upgrade stators. He ran out. Again. I gotta to get out to his place one of these days and meet the man. Seems like a great guy and certainly top notch to do business with for sure.

Not a problem Max. Us blondes gotta stick together.

Scooter beat me to it. But I got to say Rick over at Buckeye is great to works with. Been buying from him and getting some excellent advice for a couple of years. He knows these bikes inside out and backwards. If you order from Rick you will get the right parts the first time. If he suggests that you will need something else when you place an order.....it's not an upsell. You're going to need it. His Braided SS lines are excellent and the upgrade stator is probably the best around for quality. Not to mention the discount.

Yeppers. I suppose it wouldn't be much good for deer hunting. Take too many baggies to pack up the pieces of meat. 10,180lbs? Damn!
-
And for a second shot.....er......round......er......clip.

If this rifle don't meet your shooting needs you had better hide like a bunny from whatever you are hunting. You suppose they make this in a semi-auto?
