  1. Yikes! I feel better about the old one I went through now. You got me on the nasty looking. Hope you can get her cleaned up. Mike
  2. Give these folks a shake. I've had good luck with them on odd parts now and then. This one is for the '85 model for the cover alone I believe. http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-59G-2477A-01-00.html Other info: http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-1NL-2477A-00-00.html I have an '84 VR and had problems with the seat and I ended up buying a seat off an '87 VR. It fits, with switching the mounts around a bit, but as far as the seats themselves I can't see much differerence in the shape of the foam or cover other than the pattern in the seat material. The '83 part is listed on my sfuff as 3JJ-24730-20-00 and/or 10-00 depending on color. The '88 part number is 1NL-2477A-00-00 and they seem to cross reference to each other.
  3. You did a good job of tieing down your load. Now this guy..........he needed a ladder rack!
  4. I was looking for a new cover for mine a while back but can't find the websites I looked through at the moment. I ended up checking around town to find a shop to recover it and the backrest and the average rates were about $350.00 for the seat and $150.00 for the backrest. I ended up picking up a fine condition seat for $40.00 off eBay. Had to sort though quite a few to find a good one and waited a while for a good price. If I find those listings I'll post them here later. Good luck.
  5. Very cool Annie. Glad you are riding again.
  6. Anybody ever mount a trunk rack off an MKII on a MKI bike? Would it work or are the trunks that much different?
  7. Ah damn. I'm gonna go hug my guitar for a while.
  8. I friend of mine just sent me these shots of a side car, er....bicar, ah... well whatever it's called I like the looks of it.
  9. Yep that is the plug for the hole that you use to change the needle seats. The net filter is just inside of it and the the needle seat is below that. They are a bear to remove and replace. To get it out you need to drill part way into it and blind tap it to fit a small bolt. Then you can use a claw hammer to pry it up and out. If you chose to drill all the way through it plan on replacing the net fitler along with the plug. They are a soft metal so you MAY be able to remove the carb rack and then supporting the bottoms of the carbs on a solid base be able to use a point punch and hit it hard enough to get it to expand a bit and reseat itself. No promises on that. It would be my quess that the only reason it is leaking is the net filter is badly clogged or blocked. That is the only reason there would be any pressure (from the fuel pump) at that point. If you open the carbs to the fuel bowl and spray carb cleaner through from the inside through the needle seat you should get a good flow from the fuel inlet pipe. If not, the net is clogged. Go ahead, ask me how I know all this. LOL! I hate carbs! Mike
  10. That one would make me nervous if the bike even fit on it. Not much to the framework.
  11. Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. Every thing mentioned has been read up on and studied. Kreem is a popular repair but there are so many negative comments on the long term problems I kind of backed away from it. I would have to assume that most to problems were the after affect of improper use but ya never know. The reason I want to try the BEHR #911 is the factor that it appears to be stronger than the Evaporust by a long shot. One of the guys I worked with used a full gallon of Evaporust on a 2.5 gallon tank that was in about the same shape as mine and had little results to speak of. The POR15 is still in the running as I haven't ordered my other products yet. Sounds good and less complaints than on other products at least. The Phenol Novolac from Caswells is the epoxy you mentioned. Very good comments on it everywhere. And Bubba, I'm hoping for the best. I'm going to try to do the inside of the tank only. LOL! But then again ya never know. At least it's a 1st gen and my new paint job would not be too obvious. Even considering the old battery charger and steel rod in the tank trick at this point. Thanls again. Mike
  12. Man been through that! Everything from 10 gal. to a 180 gal reef tank. For what you have and about any size tank I recommend a power head mounted on an updraft tube and a spounge filter at the bottom, just sitting on the surface of your gravel, rocks, what ever you use. The bigger the tank, add more power heads and filters. The power head at the top water level will circulate and aerate the water better than an air stone on a pump. I do not like the undergravel filters myself. They are a total PITA to clean under them when needed. Most people use a an air stone in the updraft tube for them to pull the water and muck up form underneath. Just not strong enough. Changing the air stone to a power head helps but still not the best. Using the power head through a spounge filter traps about everything it picks up and it developes a bacteria base the breaks down toxins along the way. A weekly rinse in cool tap water keeps it clean. Buy a siphone type suction tube to clean the gravel about every week also. Suck out about a 1/3 of the water and replace it with fresh treated water. Because of the chemical treaments used in our water supplies the water must be treated to prevent killing the fish. Your local pet store can advise you on how much is needed for the water in your area. If you are just going with goldfish you won't be needing a heater for the tank at least. They are cold water fish and using a heater with them will cause them to secrete more of their natural protective film which is not good for them. When filling the tank for the first time be sure to let the water sit for a few days. Add a fish or two then and let the tank build up it's natural balance. After the first few survive then add the rest. Hope that helps a little bit.
  13. Hey Brad! Getting used to the heat yet? The drawl taking effect yet? Ya tried the grits? Ok, I'll quit now. After a couple of visits to local shops that do tank repair and reconditioning I decided to avoid having to lean on lamp posts downtown at night to pay for their services. I spent a lot of time on several......a few.....er.....a LOT of bike web sites over the last few days reading posts on rust problems. All these products have been used on bike tanks with apparently a lot of success. I weeded out quite a few products that were either too risky or had a lot of failures after treatments. Don't worry about the grits. They are ediable.......really they are. Good luck down there. Mike
  14. Ok....I've decided my gas tank is going to have to be dealt with. The bike had been stored for nine years before I bought it. The PO had run it once in a while and it had been in a heated garage all that time and the tank had been kept full (according to PO). The tank was checked as one of the first things during my inspection. Very little rust to be seen when I bought it. During the two winters I have owned it the bike has been kept in an unheated garage and the fuel treated with Sea Foam and Stabil during storage. Run it a bit every week and top off the gas with fresh. During the summer months I keep it topped off every few days unless I'm on the road then I'll let down to the last bar. But as luck may have it the rust is getting worse and getting to be a problem. It's clogging my fitler (3rd one) and getting into the carbs now. So here is my game plan after a lot of research on products. I'll say this is what I'm using and continue on unless you can convince me I'm going about it the wrong way. I'm pulling the tank and starting out with a alcohol and steel brad and BB cocktail to scuff up the interior and break up the rust. It's not heavy rust by any means but it's there. It surprised me from the looks of the tanks interior that I'm even having a problem this severe. Following that will be a soak with BEHR # 911 Concrete Etcher, a phospheric acid to break down the rest of the rust. The final step will be a treatment with Phenol Novolac Sealer from Caswells. Seems like a decent product for the coating. The tank is solid and no leaks or weak spots. Once I got the tank flushed out and found an inspection mirror that would fit inside I found most the rust problem in the lower end. So any advice or comments on the products I'm looking to use? Thanks Mike
  15. I would have to assume the NAPA 3007 is a paper element core. Am I correct? I'm looking for a better filter myself.
  16. Have you checked that your battery is fully charged and in good condition. These bike require a strong battery to keep them starting and running right. I'd have to supect the battery or a great deal of resistance along the starting system. Cables and their connections to ALL points, a dirty or worn starter being most likey.
  17. I ran into a couple of rocket riders the other afternoon while out doing my therapy ride after work. Nice old two lane road runs south out of CB Iowa that run through the bluffs along the river and it's got some sweeping curves to keep it interesting. I had these guys come up from behind and then pass. The front one seemed to be holding a pretty decent line and had good control. The second one was on his way to the hospital. Every curve he would back off then crank it into the turn leaning his bike as far as it would go. But.....he was keeping his body vertical, 90 degrees to the road. I run this road, (when there is no traffic) at 75 to 80 MPH and have no problems. At 55 MPH he was close to drifting off the road. He was going in too tight to start with and then going way too wide on the outside on every turn. They stopped at a gas station in Glenwood and I pulled in to get a soda. Took a look at the bikes and the second bike was something to see. Sliders chewed off and body work about ready to fall off. Handle bars bent and the levers damaged. I mentioned that the bike looked like it had a rough life. The rider said it was his third one in two years. He thought that the newer bikes were just too hard to control. Yeah! Ok! Sure. LOL! He did mention that they had been running 65 MPH and I did a good job "keeping up" with them. I asked which way they were headed and they were turning around to head back on the same road. I pulled out about 50' ahead of them from the gas station and they started to pull up tight on my tail. About 3 minutes later I couldn't see them anymore in my mirror. I was sitting on my bike eating an ice cream cone when they came by in CB. They turned and looked but didn't even slow down when they saw me. Hell! I would have bought them a snow cone for just getting there alive. I just wanted to be ahead of them. I hate being a witness to accidents. Kids! Gotta love 'em.
  18. Soooo......did he get the message? Some people are rather dense aren't they. I came out of a store one day and found 5 lil kids climbing on my bike and mom was trying to take pics of them. I ground my teeth and bit my lip and told her that was my bike and asked her if there was something I could help her with. She explained that the kids saw the bike and she thought it would be cute to get pics of them sitting on it. I took each kid and sat them on the bike alone while mom snapped each kids pic. When the kids were done I offered to take her pic with the bike. She grinned ear to ear and jumped on. I stood there holding the camera and waited for a while. She asked me if I knew how to use the camera. "Yep, I do." And waited some more. She sat there ginning. She asked if was going to take the pic. "Yep, I am" She sat there a little longer and asked me when I was going to take the pic. "As soon as I can get a shot of you pulling your head out of your A$$!" was my reply. I did get a nice shot of the outraged look on her face but I don't think it will be going into her family album in the "cute" section. Spent some time when I got home cleaning the scuff marks and hand prints off my bike. I love lil kids but sometimes the parents need to put in a corner WITH the pointy hat. But any way.....I hope your neighbor coughs up the bucks for repairs when he sobers up. Mike
  19. Morning Dick I think this statement from one of his early e-mails is what everybody is reading and that does give the impression that there are enough sets to cover 25 units. "Let’s do $32.00 each. I can send the connectors for all 25 pieces, but not sure about the crimp terminals and cavity plugs." Crimp connectors and cavity plugs are not that big of a deal in either case. Mike
  20. Well this is getting interesting. Last year we had a rider tagged at 155 MPH on a Honda out on West Dodge. Yesterday we broke his record. The name has been changed to protect the moron. At 188 MPH, Motorcyclist Can't Elude Police "Idiot Delight" Arrested In Omaha KETV.com August 6, 2009 OMAHA, Neb. -- Police said a motorcyclist, "Idiot Delight" who fled from them Wednesday at almost 200 mph not only put himself in danger but also drivers in cars. "You can check your rear view mirror and not see anyone, and then have someone coming by you at 188 mph," said Iowa State patrol Lt. Mike Miller. "It's a frightening thing for the public." Miller said a driver being passed can react in unpredictable ways and endanger everyone else on the road. The motorcyclist, 36-year-old , "Idiot Delight" accelerated after troopers spotted him on Interstate 29 near Missouri Valley. He sped into Council Bluffs, where he got on Interstate 480 at Broadway Avenue, Miller said. Within minutes, he was speeding west on Interstate 80 in Omaha. He exited at 60th Street and stopped his sports bike at a house near 59th and Fay streets, where he was caught. "Idiot Delight" faces several felony and misdemeanor charges. This was partly in the Interstate through Omaha itself. Heavy traffice most the time. I see enough of these morons almost every day. A group of rocket riders will block off a couple of lanes on the Interstated by slowing down traffic then do their 75 MPH wheelies in the gaps. Seen some pretty close calls by cagers jumping into the open lanes and not seeing what was going on behind them. It's a freak show out there these days. Mike
  21. Thanks Barend, Either one of them would meet my needs. The size is right on target and the mounting could be altered enough to make it work. Back to eBay and the swap meets now that I know what they look like. About the only thing mine will hold is a 6 pack cooler. Geesh. Thanks again. Mike
  22. Hey mbrood Got a question for ya. I've been changing out my marker and running lights to LED's. Add on lights and mounts. Now I'm down to converting the mini Barons and the double lights on the rear light bar to the LED blade types to replace the stock bulbs. I found everything I need on the site you referred to and it was like Xmas. Big list! But my question is from what you have done so far is replacing the stock bulb with a white LED the way to go or did you put any red LED's behind red lenses? My concern would be the red LED might be dimmer under a red lense but haven't played with that yet so I thought I would ask before I placed my order. I installed the Buckeye upgrade stator a while back with a new AGM battery and that handles the load well but it would be nice to keep the demand for juice to a minimumn. Thanks Mike
  23. That harshness will go away after some breaking in. Mine have over 5,000 miles on them now and they did soften up a bit. Pretty stiff when they were new. I'm 285 lbs and 6'2" so the Progressives were a huge help. I'm running 10 wt oil and thought maybe now that they have relaxed a bit I might try 15 wt.
  24. I know the clip you are talking about. Need more folks willing to speak up like Ted does. He is passionate about the issue.
  25. Now that isn't something you will find on a shelf sitting around! They are out there and I'm sure they are strictly products of some creative minds as a one off item. Like the one in the the pics were on a V-Max with a super charger. Where to find one......I have no idea where to even start. It has crossed my mind as well. Be an interesting project for sure. Hey Squeeze........any of your power mad road burner buddies got any info on this? Squeeze would be the guy to know. Shall I say he's not the cruising kind of rider. LOL! Slap me if I'm wrong on that Squeeze.
