It's your lucky day Erick. Squidly fixed everything up north so we had to move him down south to help out. You got a fighting chance with Squidly in your corner. LOL! -

Hi Erick, Welcome to the club. Take a look around and don't be afraid to ask questions. There is a lot knowledge here. Some of these guys know these bikes inside out. This engage mod is a recent one that has been offered to our members by our one and only Squeeze and Dano. This is the ONLY improvement to the engage system that we have ever seen. It's a last time ever fix. As for your starter, a good cleaning and new brushes can do wonders for these things, and another members has been building an upgrade cable set that replaces the stock battery cables. That one is a MUST DO! So welcome again and stop by the Watering Hole and introduce yourself. You'll get a taste of the asylum we live in here. I'm just saying ya know.....ya been warned. And better be prepared to post pics of your bike. Thay are kinda.....er....well.... special people and they LOVE pics. See ya around. Mike -

Yeah the plug is replaceable.......it comes on a new stator. LOL! Sorry. Just clean it up real well and pack sealant around the wires going through the plug inside and out. Make sure there are no gaps. Coat again on the outsides of the plug and gasket. Should seal up fine. What I'm seeing is the older wires are a woven covering and they act like a wick, allowing oil to pass throught the plug. Soldering the wires is a good move also. Sounds like you have a good game plan going. I'll be watching your results on the clutch upgade also. I've got my bike running real well and noticed at the end of last season when running down the road in 5th at Interstate speeds a sudden WOT would set her to slipping. So I guess it's time to do the spring mod in mine to. -

Take a good look at the stator while you have the cover off. Look for melted wires and over heated coils. Look for damage on the rubber plug on the stator wires where it goes though the case. That lil sucker is a weak spot for leaks even when installing a new one. A liberal coating of black sealer is a good idea when reinstalling the case. -

Hey Flyinfool, You should have been around my place a couple of years ago when I pulled the rotor off the first time. After an afternoon of a lot of effort and frustration I was back on here venting and getting some moral support. It would not budge. I was using a 1/2 air impact and had two moving pads folded 4 ways each stacked under the thing for when it came loose. I was ready.....it wasn't. I had tightened the puller and tightened it again. I had heated the hub and tighted the puller some more. I had even cooled the hub with compressed air and heated it again. Still no movement. I'd given up for the night. Frustrated and a bit ticked off at my own failure, went to bed grumbling. I woke up early the next morning with an attitude and ready to do battle. I backed the car out of the shop and pulled my stool up to the bike and looked down at the crank and where the rotor should have been. No rotor. Gone. Ah dang! I slid my stool back and lit a smoke counting the beers I had before bed. Two. Ok, wasn't drunk wrenching again. I looked down and there under my stool nestled into the pile of moving pads was my rotor with the puller still attached. When I quit for the night I had left the puller still attached and fully cranked down. During the night it had just let loose and popped off and landed about 2 1/2 feet from the bike. I'm glad I left the pads laying on the floor and didn't clean up before quitting that night. Or............... I have garage gremlins........good ones. It came off a lot easier this time but it still took three good efforts for it to pop off. Now a word of advice. When you install the modified rotor and engage.......resist the urge to crank it over with the side cover still off to see if it works. The idler gears will walk around and get out of line and if that happens they can create enough pressure to damage the retaining holes for the idler shafts or even crack the case around the holes. Not a good thing. Just a warning. The USPS has a 7x7x5 Priorty Mail box that is a great fit. It was $18.15 to ship it to Dano by Priorty Mail. Weighed in at 11 lbs. 8.8 oz. without the old engage clutch attached. How did your old engage clutch look? Busted up anything like this? Later Mike -
This is a little impractical for a bike, but loud

Finally.......a horn to get a Burlington/Northern to pull over. I'm gonna need a trailer. -
The digital mounts up nice with the bezel, the rubber gasket and as said......a flat spot.

I don't know Squeeze. I've heard stories about his garage. I think there was a picture once. I think it was a garage. I think I'll stick with my storage system. Never to be used. Might need someday. Use today. Use tomorrow. Used already. Think about it. Moved it. Sell it. Give it away. Trade it. Replace it. Fix it. FUBAR Burned out. Broke. OEM NOS POS Move to new box. Look for matching piece. Chrome it. Paint it. Epoxy it. Duct tape it. Screw it. Identify it. WTF? And that's not even listing all the subcatagories. On second thought.....Hey Condor.....wanna stop by next weekend? -

9 mill .45 Lane Apt. 410 Sawed Off, NE Don't even think about my feathered friend. When I got my bike it was missing one of the trim pieces and the other one was falling off. (held on by double face tape) I found a used set on eBay and did a mod to get them mounted. For the life of me I can't remember which side was missing or which side I had left over. I'll do some digging tomorrow and see if I can find the extra one. If I can find it and it's the one you need it's yours. -

Starter Clutch Mod

Hey Brian, Mine goes under the knife tonight for the mod to the new engage clutch. I've sent a message to the creator of this lil gem, Squeeze, to get his permission to post pics of the unit when I get mine back and do the install. What it basically consists of is installing a multi-element sprag clutch into the rotor along with a heavier 72 tooth gear. The sprag clutch has been around a long time and used in many industial and automotive applications. The one he has developed uses 19 element, spring loaded elepitical sprags compared to our 3 roller set up. I know that Aprilia uses them.....I don't know which models have them. This site may explain a little more about how sprags work. http://www.gmnbt.com/freewheel_technology.htm So I will share what info I can as this progresses. Myself.......seriously looking forward to this mod. I'm just trashed my second stock one and the PO went through two himself over the years. Mike -
Starter rebuild kits

A few weeks ago there was a thread running about brushes for the starters. I saw today there were a couple of listings for starter rebuild kits. This is a pretty good price for the kit seeing as how the brushes are a bit out of line from the dealers. Everything your need for a full rebuild. Just fyi. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Starter-KIT-Yamaha-M-C-XV12T-XVZ12T-Venture-XV12-XVZ12_W0QQitemZ290400764713QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item439d3c0329 Item # 290400764713 -
Hey Ron. Welcome to the club. What part of Nebraska you out of? Can't say much on your seat but I'll say this. A 3/4 shorn lambskin pad will make a long ride VERY comfortable. Love mine to death. Mike

What's soft on the inside and hard on the outside?
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
Hey MikesBikes Yeppers, it's all glued in except the bottom pad. I tired my luck with using the old foam insert that pads the bottom and covered it with trunk liner material I found at Wally World for $8.88 a roll. Big roll.....should take two rolls to do the trunk and bags if I don't screw up too much. Started out using a can of spray head liner adhesive made by Duro. Coated both the top of the pad and the back of the liner and let them tack up and stuck them together. Rolled the liner over the back about an inch and glued that down. Laid it out on the bench and laid a piece of plywood on it and dropped a tool chest on it for the night. End result.....the liner is going the be on there a looooonnnng time. I made paper patterns of the sides in three sections so the material could be cut to shaped to fit the curves without having to have a lot of seams. Three pieces did the trick with about an inch overlap. Once those were glued in a quick piece to cover the plastic housing for the latches and dropped the bottom insert in and was good to go. I finished the patterns tonight for the top of the trunk. That is going to be four seperate pieces. The bags,,,,,,,Good Lord I don't know yet. They are going to be a challenge. I'm looking at some flexible LED strips and could be glued in or attached with velcro to add some lights to the inside of the trunk and bags. I'm hoping it warms up soon so I can get back to riding and quit thinking about what else I can do while I'm sitting around looking at pieces of my bike. But I am looking forward to how this all works out. Looking good so far.- 23 replies

I've been checking in over there about everyday for the last couple of weeks. Looks like they got things under control now with the new system. No problems at all like they werere having. They have been missing sections on the forums from the backup but they are getting that back together also.

Save your self the headache and a few bucks and just rebuld the one you got. If it isn't eaten up inside you'll be good to go. If you bought a used one your best bet would be to rebuid it before you put it in anyway to be on the safe side. But first things first I'd try to bleed the lines before I got started on the master. Who knows.......you may just have a bubble in there. Mike -
Hey Sheriff, Sounds like you have been a busy camper since the last time we talked and you're close to having it whipped. Like Squeeze said, go ahead and open them up a bit more and get her out on the road. These bikes start to come into their own around 4,500 rpm. I run the Interstate a lot and I rarely go into 5th gear until I hit 75 mph. Tooling around at 3,000 to 3,500 rpm is not the way this engine likes to be run. Some of these guys will attest to the fact that these old girls will top 100 mph in 3rd gear. Now...myself.....will never admit to it when speaking to a LEO current or not so you didn't hear that from me. A 1/4 can of Sea Foam in the tank and let it work out what you didn't get during the clean up.
