  1. Let us know what you think of the "Bug" when you get it. I'm thinking about adding one on along with the digital meter I installed. Over kill? Maybe....but I'm still gun shy after all my electrical and charging problems I went through before I got mine working. It's just a kind of comforting to look down and see that everything is working. Mike
  2. Karl......you were asking about the lights. 1st....all LEDs in lightbar 2nd......tail light (stock 1157) 3rd.......brake light on 4th......Thinking about changing the trunk interior LEDs to red and running with the lid up.
  3. If ya get to the point where you're considering Skydoc's clutch kit......It's got my endorsment!!! I installed one in my '84 last week and the bike is a whole different animal. No more slipping at all in 4th and 5th gears. And lets just say you can feel in in the lower gears to. Great hook up! Mike
  4. Good deal Earl!! I got my DEKA over a year ago and still impresses the heck out of me. Great battery! Can't beat if for cost vs performance. Mike
  5. The hot start problem was a thorn in my side....and lower and to the rear......for the first year after I got the bike. A starter rebuild came first......with the extra ground wire and new brushes. (more on that in a minute.) Good improvement. Cranked better. Then the cable upgrade. Much better. Fired right up after long hard rides in the heat after gassing up. Then the DEKA AGM battery.....Major power supply in a box. Then the starter engage clutch mod. Oh yeah. No more chatter. Perfect. Now on the brushes..........I bought a set off eBay at the time. Think it was $5 to $10 bucks a set. I was even involved in a thread searching out cheaper sources for brushes as the stealers get what ....$25, $27 for a brush? One brush! Now as I was finishing up the bike last week, just buttoned up the motor after the clutch upgrade kit was installed and the bike started a few times and quit. Just quit cranking. After everything I had done that just blew me away. So to keep a long story short the problems was the starter. It was fried......I mean crispy critter. Only future for it was the trash can. The new brushes (3 years old) were burned down 50% or better. The 24 year old brushes I took out had been in better shape. I was talking to Skydoc on this and he felt, as I do now, that the cheaper brushes are a softer compound. From the looks of it......he's dead right about that. No more cheap aftermarket brushes for me. I also found a bad connection on an end of one of the 8 ga cables that probably played a part in the failure to. NOTE: These were not the ones that lonestarmedic makes! So Skydoc saved my bacon.....again.....and sent me a starter. And even better.....it was a four brush setup. How much could a fella ask for. The bike fires up like it was hit by lightening again. But keep the quality of the cheaper parts in mind. Save a few bucks....great...all for it! But in the end it could cost you more.
  6. Used this product last year. Won't use any other product again. This stuff is the answer. Easy to use, tank interior does not have to be prefect to bond and hard a nails when it cures. Inside of tank looks and feels like a Thermos bottle. Way superior to the latex treaments. http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/epoxygas.htm Washed out with high pressure at car wash, nuts, and BB rattle treatment and then a rinse with alcohol or thinner. I stuck a blow dryer in the fill hole to dry inside. Then the epoxy. If the tank had any thin spots from the rust the epoxy will build it up. In the pic you can see shine of the epoxy. Still got rust that would not break loose but the epoxy actually bonds to it better than a bare clean suface. After a year there has been NO rust particles in the filter at all. Mike
  7. And thanks Ponch..........You painted the mounts that I sent to Brad to beef up with gussets so my 4 1/2 drivers wouldn't shake.......(as bad) LOL! If everybody that contributed in some way to this bike would sign it I wouldn't need to paint it! Mike
  8. We used to put tugsten bolts on the bottom of our pegs. You drag that on concrete and it's like the 4th of July. I'm looking for some new bolts for my VR. heh heh heh!
  9. Brian. Never got any pics before with the old headlight but since I had to put it back in for the time being I'll try to get that done before I install the projectors. I'm thinking.....God forbid......that I might put a Batman logo on the high beam. That might be interesting.
  10. Now I'm going to ask this, In the pic of the rear of the bike you might notice how rounded off the mudflap is. Wasn't that way when I got it. Is it just me and the way I run the twisties or does anybody else have the same wear?
  11. Dale....we might just be related somehow.
  12. Hey Brian, If I ever get my projector bulbs delivered I'll point 'em your way and flash them. Let me know when ya see 'em so I can get a heading on ya. You find any yet? Mine should be here next week. Mike
  13. I should run a poll to guess how many Baggies it take to store a Venture for the winter. Took me a while to find all of them the last couple of days. Geesh.
  14. Been working this all winter. Danos engage clutch mod, Shydocs Clutch upgrade and drain kit, LED running lights, Sheep skin backrest cover, 4 brush starter, repaired or rebuilt EVERY cracked tab, epoxied the fuel tank, new brake pads, added chrome panels to side covers, 4 1/2" driving lights with amber lenses, did interior of trunk...........ah there too much to list! Anyway I got some miles tonight. Felt real good. Yes it did. Gonna be a good summer. Thanks to all the guys that provided upgrade, kits, parts and advice for me during this project. And thanks to Dingy for his tools. The clutch upgrade kit was a huge improvement. Rolling down the Interstate at 75 mph and give it a twist and it's just jumps right on up there. No more slip. Nada.
  15. Yep! That should cover all the bases! I love multiple choice. Thanks Mike
  16. That should take a while to down load but looks like it will be helpful. Thanks Mike
  17. I just got the job of doing the up keep on a pair of 2009 CT50s. 800cc. Trying to track down which oil filters will fit. If I got this right they have the 20x1mm thread on the filter, the same as the VL800 Intruder. Anybody got any info on oil filter numbers that will match up? Thanks Mike
  18. Make sure that all four carbs are on on axis, that is flat and inline. A couple of 2x2's under them on hard flat work surface and loosen all the screws on the mount brackets. A couple more 2x2's on the top and clamp them down. When all four carb throats are flat on the surface tighten all the mounting backets screws securely. That is one way to get them close if you don't have an assmbley plate anyway. Then check your linkage again. Might be closer. These carbs are extremely picky about being on axis. One you get them close then while still on the bench adjust each sync screw until each set of butterflys are closed and begin to open at the exact same time. Cutting and rewelding the link will bring you more problems than you want.
  19. Two things I found on my '84 when I got it that were causing the rattles and bang when I hit a bump. The mounts to dash pod were loose. I replaced the grommets and backed them up with a washer. Tighted that right up. No more lil rattle. But the bigger one was still there. I found the long mounting bolts for the fairing subframe (one on each side just below and behind the headlight a bit) were backed out about a 1/4 inch. I tightened up all the subframe bolts and the rattle was gone. PO was a space case I guess.
  20. To see everthing you need to see at least the windshield trim and headlight cover need to come off and remove the retainer for the head light and the head light itself. If it's flopping around some parts are missing. You have a MKII model and mine is an '84, a MKI. Headlights are a bit different but the the basics are the same. If there is something greatly different somebody will pop in here to point it out. It will be tomorrow evening before I can get the pics posted but I will get it done ASAP. As you are finding out some PO's are very creative. Some in good ways.....some not so much!!
  21. Dan.......I gotta ask, Were you on the bike or not. :rotf:
  22. The two bolts that attach the headlight bucket are shoulder bolts with washers that allow the bucket to pivot up and down to adjust beam height. The adjustment link to the knob fastens to the side of the head light bucket with two screws. On the bottom of the bucket there is a flange that runs to the rear and there is a gray plastic assembly bolted to that the allows horizonal adjustment of the bead. I have mine on the bench now so if you need any pics of how it should look let me know and I can post them tomorrow. Mike
  23. Way slick!!! Kinda did something like that years ago. Well....kinda. Forgot I chained the trailer hitch to the picnic table. The results were not the same.
  24. Google up EMGO and check on air filters. I bought a couple for about $20.00 each online. Fits like stock and does the job.
  25. Ahh geessshhh! And I was worried when I saw this pic. Now I'm a bit more than a little frightened.
