Just watch out for the potato! The one I got was about the size of a football! That was the killer. Got the steak down fine but the tater was my demise. I still blame that meal for the fact I can no longer wear 34" waist pants. It is an experience. Mike

I have an '84 that drove me nuts with the heat off the engine during those hot spells in the summer. I finally found the way to control that. I installed (or reinstalled) the plastic heat deflectors that snap onto the heads. They were not on the bike when I bought it. That seems to help with the seat warming up. I closed off the holes in the side panels with the chrome inserts. That did the trick on the legs getting hot. I open the vents up in the lower leg panels when it gets warmer and that puts a pretty good stream of fresh air out onto my legs. I have a lower chin off an '86 on the bike also and it does not seem to affect the engine temps at all. The engine runs about the same temp rather it's 30 degrees or 85 out. When falls come around I'll remove the chrome side panels and close the leg vents to get the heat back on the legs. With your year of bike you might be able to find the side cover vents with the movable louvers in them. Nice touch. If you can find a set with the vents that are intact.

Not that huge a deal on the carbon fiber. Be nice to have but I'm going to be happy to get a helmet that fits like my half helmet. (fingers crossed) The HJC's seem to fit my noggin real well, when I find one that fits. XXL. Most the outfits around here don't stock the big buckets and want the money up front and I'd have to pay for shipping an restocking fees if I don't like it. That's not going to happen. In other brands I always have a tight spot that drives me nuts. That leaves the bucket on the shelf most the time. I'm one of those guys that has one of those heads that don't fit the "One size fits all" catagories. LOL! The last time the guy at the bike shop measured my head all I heard behind me was "Good Lord!" Yep. No argument there! As the full face is a foul weather helmet for me it won't be the 1st pick for daily rides. I can get by with that. But thanks for you input. Mike

Hi Dennis, Yeah, when I saw your post it reminded me that I needed to do something about my full face. Bought it when I bought my GL1100. Yep, couple of years back. I don't use it much but carry in when the weather is going to turn really, really wet. I have 4 helmets but the HJC fits so well I wear it all the time. But your post got me looking last night and I found one in my size. http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/HJC_FS15_Helmet_Solid_Black--637188.html So that is taken care of. Thanks again for the post. Mike

DANG DANG DANG!!!!! I didn't even finish reading all your post before I jumped to the link to order one. The site showed them up to XXL. When I went to select the size it only went to XL. DANG! I bought a HJC 1/2 helmet, Trooper style, two years ago and l love the thing to death. Most comfortable and best fitting helmet I have ever owned. Been looking at replacing my full face, a Vetter, (guess my age) and this would have been just the ticket. Dang my swollen, over sized skull! Oh well.......thanks for the post. And here is a review on the helmet. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/hjc/fs-15/ Mike

You're a man after my own heart there Jack. I got fed up years ago with all the crap I got in the mail. About 4 out 5 pieces of mail I got were pre-approved, samples, "Special Offers", YOU HAVE WON!, oh heck you know the junk I'm talking about. Each and every one of them came with self addressed, postage paid return envelopes. Now I'm not one to see people pay for something that will never get used so I came up with a plan. I would sit down at the table and lay out all the envelopes and take one companies junk and stuff it into somebody elses return envelope (and throw in anything else that I could fit in there also........orange and banana peels, cigarette butts, a stale heel from the bread, even a couple of sardines once in a while.) Over time the amount of junk mail I got kinda dropped off. I reduced my trips to the garbage can by 75% and I looked at it as a early form of recycling. And the companies got a return on their investment on the prepaid postage. Win - Win. I'm sure there was mail carrier out there somewhere that was going "What the heck is that smell?"

Bad Starter or not?????????
Snaggletooth replied to dukhunter's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Now.....I just went through this on my '84. Had a starter fail. Yes....for real. My fault. I rebuilt it with cheap brushes a couple of years ago. They were junk. Burned the starter beyond repairing. So......a new starter was installed. I thought I was done and ready to roll. Hit the button and nuttin'. The solenoid hit but nothing else. Drove me nuts for a while chasing the probable issues. I finally hooked a jumper cable from the output side of the solenoid to the stud on the starter. Spun right over and fired. I found the battery cable from the solenoid to the starter (and yes they were two year old upgrades) had a loose terminal end at the starter end. Pulled it off, cut it back and crimped it and soldered it back on. Took care of that! Never expected the cable to fail that soon. But making sure the battery is fully charged and at full power is the best place to start. Connections are the next thing to check for sure. And I got to recommend the DEKA AGM! Skydoc_17 has them listed in the classifieds. If he's unable to help right now check www.bohannonbattery.com. Josh can help ya out. I'm on my second year on mine and it's still preforming like the day I got it.- 8 replies

Brake overhaul
Snaggletooth replied to Jimod's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Spitting the caliper halves is not fatal by any means. I had to split both of my front ones as I could not blow out the pistons with air pressure. One side would come out and the other would stick. PITA! There is no seal like an o-ring or a gasket between the halves. Just a machined surface. I suppose that is the reason the manual warns not to split. The fluid ports run though both halves so the surface MUST be clean, undamaged and retighten properly. There is some wiggle room there in the bolt holes but it does not seem to affect alignment of the halves by very much and does not seem to affect the axis as far as the pistons being tighter on either the front or rear edges. My pads are wearing evenly and no leaks at the joining surfaces. The grooves he mentioned are the ones for the piston seals, the square (or flat sided) o-rings. And yep, they are made that way. I got to say cleaning the grooves is much easier with the halves apart. There was a lot of crud in my after being stored for nine years. Now the question would be is it the wider of the two or the narrower one? There are two o-rings and they are different.- 9 replies

Your right. Back in the day the only thing that was an issue on trailers as far as color was the upper front clearance lights. They had to be amber as they were visable from the front. The lower lights were red in most cases. This link should help on current light requirements. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/trlrpstr.html

Nice looking bike. Thanks for the pic. Brings back some fun memories. That puppy was a beast back then.

Ok......digging back into what I remember on trailer lights under D.O.T. regs.......any light installed on a trailer must be operational at all times, as in 1/2 hour after sunset anyway. (If an LEO is having a bad day they can ticket you for a nonoperational light, even if there are dozen more in view.) All trailer lights should be red only, no amber required as on the front of a motor vehicle. Running and/or marker lights must operate independently of the brake lights. Brake lights can be on/off function only if there are running light on the back of the trailer in working order and indicate the width of the trailer. Most trailers run the dual function running/brake lights installed at the widest point. Some of the stuff from 13 years in transportion safety stuck anyway.

Finally.......time to get out and ride
Snaggletooth replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
I hear ya Bob. Most my short trips in the past couple of years have been within towing distance of home. Finally getting the bike to a point where I have complete faith in it, or my ability to make repairs on the side of the road, is making the longer trips more enjoyable. No worries! Been kind of delaying my departure this morning. Watching the rain in ALL directions. The Southern trip looks like I would hit rain and stay in it all day today and tomorrow. I don't mind riding in the rain at all but don't want to spend an entire day or two doing it. But I hit my boots with another coat of mink oil and the rain gear and gloves are in the top of the trunk bag so what ever happens.......I'm still out of here for the day. The bike could use a little presoak anyway. I was admiring my bug collection this morning. Pretty impressive. Found a few feathers in the lower cowl intake to. And there was the remains of that Yellowjacket in the intake on my helmet. Glad that one got strained out before going in.! LOL! But I'm going somewhere............ -
Get the bike up on the centerstand and then get down low on the right side of the bike. You will see a sight glass in the engine case just above the frame and behind the waterpump housing. There are two marks on the glass housing. One set about 1/4 of the way up and the other is about 3/4 of the way up. The oil level should be right in between them. Any higher and the bike will suck oil into the air box. The oil in the crankcase serves the motor, tranny and clutch.

Well, I got off work for a week. Finally! Kind of short notice so I had made no plans. Hard to get loose sometimes when you are the only one that does what you do. I got to get somebody trained! But I woke up yesterday morning at the usual time, 2:30 am, and couldn't get back to sleep. So I took a look at the weather and decided.......NORTH! Strapped the trunk bag on and threw in a few tools JIC and was out the door by 4:30. A bit cool at 39 degrees and cloudy all day but warmed up into the 60's later on. The old girl never gave me a lick of trouble and made the ride most enjoyable. Headed out of Omaha on back roads and stayed that way all day. Wandered through dozens of small towns and three states. Ended up in Yankton, S.D. The strange part was I only saw two other bikes in the entire trip. But then again I was on roads where I didn't even see a car for a half hour at a time. Perfect!! Got back to Omaha late last night and slept like a lamb. Surprised me! I only covered 570 miles. Woke up this morning (a little later than yesterday) and checked the weather again. Today......WEST!! A somewhat shorter trip, only 350 miles today but the weather was warmer and sunny all day. Tomorrow......I'm thinking.......South? I like Arkansas. Maybe spend the night by a lake on this one. Better pack some extra stuff. Lord I love this bike. Even more....I love the effect of the needle mod. Dang. Later Mike
