  1. My '84 did that when I bought it. I tightened all the connections but it still did it a bit. When I did the fork rebuild I replaced the o-rings in the collars on the tops of the forks. No more leaky. That bike sat for 9 years in storage without being ridden so they were pretty dried out.
  2. Perfect!!! Open holster.....not concealed.......er......hope his cruise control works. Or has a matching rig on his left side. LOL!
  3. Dang! Missed something again! I came down through Ute on 183 Sunday morning. Mike
  4. There was rider here in Omaha early this season, before the salt and gravel were gone, that claimed he hit a pot hole and lost control and crashed his bike. He's been stating that he's going to sue the city for damage to his bike and the medical bills for his road rash. Waiting to see how that one turns out. Now the street here are still a mine field from the nasty winter we had, but still, we all know the risks of riding and with less than ideal roads that risk is increased. Apparently he was not wearing proper gear either if he pulled as much rash has he claimed. But on the other hand......the city has done a pretty poor job of getting the streets back in shape.......maybe they need to be held responsible in some cases. The shoulders of I-80 look like a hub cap flea market in some areas.
  5. I noticed my '84 has been reading differently lately to. I've had the shifter pedal off more than a couple of times in the last year for different projects so I started there. First thing I found was the scribe mark on the shift rod was not lined up correctly with the cinch space on the shifter control arm. Not by much but enough to make a difference in the reading in the "N" position. Got that lined back up and found the green neutral light was coming on on que but the gear position reading was still not solid. Would flicker a bit. I have been changing the adjusting link on the shifter for the difference in the boots I wear from winter to summer. That also made a difference in the gear postion display. The lower I'd get the pedal, the more solid the position display would be. Couple of things to look at anyway.
  6. I have a Snap On roller chest and a 6 drawer top box that I bought back in '72 when I was just starting bending wrenches for a living. Stands about 5 1/2 feet tall. Paid I think......$800.00 bucks for the set new. Been one heck of a box but it was not enough room for all the things I have collected over the years. I saw this thread a while back and started looking around for a new setup. At least another big box for all the extra stuff. Looked at a few that were mentioned and they would do the trick for what I need. I ran into one of the Snap On guys a few weeks ago and asked what he had for used boxes. Showed me a few pics and asked what I had. Came over and looked at it and offered me $3,700.00 towards a trade on one of his bigger....er .......massive roll arounds. I just laughed and said I was keeping the tools. Nope......that money was for the box only! I about fell over. But then again.....when the numbers came up on his used roller he wanted $8,500.00 for it. Sears is looking pretty good right now.
  7. Oh Dang! Ouch! That looks a lil bit dry.
  8. Just watch out for the potato! The one I got was about the size of a football! That was the killer. Got the steak down fine but the tater was my demise. I still blame that meal for the fact I can no longer wear 34" waist pants. It is an experience. Mike
  9. I picked up a Univeral Vista from a local bike shop for $35.00. www.soundoffrec.com Simple install. Easy to use and rock solid lock.
  10. Check with Thunder Valley. He's a member here. I think the same tool works for the 2nd gens also. http://store.thundervalleypower.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=10&zenid=d196936aa9d45f6c641297656481d3c5 Or at the bottom of this page. http://www.justatv.com/pages/valve_shim_tools/valve_shim_tools.htm Or there is one on eBay now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330434896880&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Mike
  11. I have an '84 that drove me nuts with the heat off the engine during those hot spells in the summer. I finally found the way to control that. I installed (or reinstalled) the plastic heat deflectors that snap onto the heads. They were not on the bike when I bought it. That seems to help with the seat warming up. I closed off the holes in the side panels with the chrome inserts. That did the trick on the legs getting hot. I open the vents up in the lower leg panels when it gets warmer and that puts a pretty good stream of fresh air out onto my legs. I have a lower chin off an '86 on the bike also and it does not seem to affect the engine temps at all. The engine runs about the same temp rather it's 30 degrees or 85 out. When falls come around I'll remove the chrome side panels and close the leg vents to get the heat back on the legs. With your year of bike you might be able to find the side cover vents with the movable louvers in them. Nice touch. If you can find a set with the vents that are intact.
  12. Dang! I read the same post and ordered a helmet. If it comes with another bike I'm gonna need another garage! Nice looking bike though. Mike
  13. Not that huge a deal on the carbon fiber. Be nice to have but I'm going to be happy to get a helmet that fits like my half helmet. (fingers crossed) The HJC's seem to fit my noggin real well, when I find one that fits. XXL. Most the outfits around here don't stock the big buckets and want the money up front and I'd have to pay for shipping an restocking fees if I don't like it. That's not going to happen. In other brands I always have a tight spot that drives me nuts. That leaves the bucket on the shelf most the time. I'm one of those guys that has one of those heads that don't fit the "One size fits all" catagories. LOL! The last time the guy at the bike shop measured my head all I heard behind me was "Good Lord!" Yep. No argument there! As the full face is a foul weather helmet for me it won't be the 1st pick for daily rides. I can get by with that. But thanks for you input. Mike
  14. Hi Dennis, Yeah, when I saw your post it reminded me that I needed to do something about my full face. Bought it when I bought my GL1100. Yep, couple of years back. I don't use it much but carry in when the weather is going to turn really, really wet. I have 4 helmets but the HJC fits so well I wear it all the time. But your post got me looking last night and I found one in my size. http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/HJC_FS15_Helmet_Solid_Black--637188.html So that is taken care of. Thanks again for the post. Mike
  15. DANG DANG DANG!!!!! I didn't even finish reading all your post before I jumped to the link to order one. The site showed them up to XXL. When I went to select the size it only went to XL. DANG! I bought a HJC 1/2 helmet, Trooper style, two years ago and l love the thing to death. Most comfortable and best fitting helmet I have ever owned. Been looking at replacing my full face, a Vetter, (guess my age) and this would have been just the ticket. Dang my swollen, over sized skull! Oh well.......thanks for the post. And here is a review on the helmet. http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/hjc/fs-15/ Mike
  16. You're a man after my own heart there Jack. I got fed up years ago with all the crap I got in the mail. About 4 out 5 pieces of mail I got were pre-approved, samples, "Special Offers", YOU HAVE WON!, oh heck you know the junk I'm talking about. Each and every one of them came with self addressed, postage paid return envelopes. Now I'm not one to see people pay for something that will never get used so I came up with a plan. I would sit down at the table and lay out all the envelopes and take one companies junk and stuff it into somebody elses return envelope (and throw in anything else that I could fit in there also........orange and banana peels, cigarette butts, a stale heel from the bread, even a couple of sardines once in a while.) Over time the amount of junk mail I got kinda dropped off. I reduced my trips to the garbage can by 75% and I looked at it as a early form of recycling. And the companies got a return on their investment on the prepaid postage. Win - Win. I'm sure there was mail carrier out there somewhere that was going "What the heck is that smell?"
  17. Dave, Did you find something to work. I'll look a see if I still have an old one. If I do I can mail it off to ya. It will get ya by until Docs up and around. Mike
  18. Now.....I just went through this on my '84. Had a starter fail. Yes....for real. My fault. I rebuilt it with cheap brushes a couple of years ago. They were junk. Burned the starter beyond repairing. So......a new starter was installed. I thought I was done and ready to roll. Hit the button and nuttin'. The solenoid hit but nothing else. Drove me nuts for a while chasing the probable issues. I finally hooked a jumper cable from the output side of the solenoid to the stud on the starter. Spun right over and fired. I found the battery cable from the solenoid to the starter (and yes they were two year old upgrades) had a loose terminal end at the starter end. Pulled it off, cut it back and crimped it and soldered it back on. Took care of that! Never expected the cable to fail that soon. But making sure the battery is fully charged and at full power is the best place to start. Connections are the next thing to check for sure. And I got to recommend the DEKA AGM! Skydoc_17 has them listed in the classifieds. If he's unable to help right now check www.bohannonbattery.com. Josh can help ya out. I'm on my second year on mine and it's still preforming like the day I got it.
  19. Congrat there Ryan! Feels good don't it? Looks pretty good!
  20. Spitting the caliper halves is not fatal by any means. I had to split both of my front ones as I could not blow out the pistons with air pressure. One side would come out and the other would stick. PITA! There is no seal like an o-ring or a gasket between the halves. Just a machined surface. I suppose that is the reason the manual warns not to split. The fluid ports run though both halves so the surface MUST be clean, undamaged and retighten properly. There is some wiggle room there in the bolt holes but it does not seem to affect alignment of the halves by very much and does not seem to affect the axis as far as the pistons being tighter on either the front or rear edges. My pads are wearing evenly and no leaks at the joining surfaces. The grooves he mentioned are the ones for the piston seals, the square (or flat sided) o-rings. And yep, they are made that way. I got to say cleaning the grooves is much easier with the halves apart. There was a lot of crud in my after being stored for nine years. Now the question would be is it the wider of the two or the narrower one? There are two o-rings and they are different.
  21. Your right. Back in the day the only thing that was an issue on trailers as far as color was the upper front clearance lights. They had to be amber as they were visable from the front. The lower lights were red in most cases. This link should help on current light requirements. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/trlrpstr.html
