I like this guy already. Seems like a good match for this crowd. But the trick is when you run an ad for a bike.......as it may have been ridden in the rain, snow, sleet, whatever..........it gets written up like this. (Ridden in rain)..................Washed Daily. (Hit redline while riding in rain)...............Spot Free Rinse.

Jeff, Be glad you live where you do. Around here it would be YOUR problem. A few years back a neighbor had the same situation. Dieing tree between the curb and the sidewalk and dropping limbs into the street, sidewalk and surrounding yards. Big tree!! Every couple of years the city would come by and trim back the limbs that were a threat to the power lines on the one side. He had requested help from the city on several occasions to take the tree down. Nope.....on his property.....his problem. When the tree started to give out it started to buckle the sidwalk also. The local old biddy busybody filed a complaint with the city and he got a notice in the mail that he had 45 days to remove the tree. He was an older fella, maybe early 80's and long retired, living alone on a fixed income living in a house he owned and had been paid off for decades. Great neighbor to. Always friendly and outgoing. He contacted several tree companies and the qoutes were nuts. Started around $6,500 and ran up to $8,000. Several of us in the neighborhood got together and figured we could take it down for him. The problem was there was no room to drop it. It would have to come straight down because of the power lines and street. We went to the city and requested a permit to close the street off for 24 hours to take it down. That got denied. It ended up with the city stepping in and doing it. They billed him for everything. They never closed the street off but had it blocked with work trucks for two days while they removed the danged thing. Once that was done......he got another notice in the mail. He had 30 days to replace the damaged section of sidewalk. That much we were able to help him with. But this is a city where they can't find time to plow the side streets or fill the foot deep pot holes for months on end. But my Dad used to say "You can't fight city hall.......but you can damn well set fire to their porch!" Mike

Choke on to fire it up and then off all the way on my '84. It LOVES the cold weather! Runs like a bandit on these crisp mornings. I've been out when it took a half hour to get the temp gauge half way into the green. It's been in the high 30's in the mornings for several days in the last week. Boss man thinks I'm a basket case when I roll in at 4:30 am on the bike. But then again.......I'm not the one that showed up wearing a parka.

Well he didn't send the cat that my daughter requested (thanks for that Gannon), but he sent the part I asked for quickly enough. Worst of it is........it's in better shape than I hoped for. So rather than chop it up for parts like I planned, I'm just going to modify the part he sent me. Might have to take another look at that pile of parts he has. Looks like some good stuff. Looking forward to seeing some pics of the lights on the road after dark. Looks like a great option to the sealed beams. Looking for something whiter and brighter to go with my Hella module setup. Keep us posted. Mike

96 Royal Tranny Issue

I'm not the guy to talk to on this but it sounds like a common problem with the pins on the shift rod. If a pin bends or comes loose you can not shift to a gear higher than the pin that failed. May not be as bad as you think. Somebody with more info should be popping in soon. Good luck. Mike -
Cruser has a good point. Where I live we currently have 817 registered offenders within the city limits. I have 25 currently in my zip code alone. That's within walking distance. I currently have one two doors down from me. I'm a single parent of a daughter. She's older now but we have had to stay aware of what we have for neighbors. Check your state for a "Registered Sex Offender" web site. At one point we had 5 offenders living in our neighborhood that were all withing eyesight of our doors. Our area is almost all family with children. I downloaded the flyers and spoke with my neighbors, giving them copies and dropping off copies at the day care across the street. They were all shocked to find that many living in within a few hundred yards of each other. The management of the complex was stunned to find that the listings were all in the area of the playground and the pool. Along with that NONE of them were living there under their own lease. Most staying with girlfriends. It did not take long for the offenders to disappear. They want their privacy more than anybody. A couple of weeks ago a new guy moved onto my street, two doors down. Seemed friendly enough. He was always out walking through the neigborhood. He saw me and a few other neighbors out in my garage one night, kind of a gathering spot for bike nuts, and stopped in. He had a few beers in him, laughing and joking around. He was looking at my bulletin board on my garage wall. Bike picks, parts listings, receipts and the flyer from the offender website with his pic and crime listed. He just stopped and turned around and looked at everyone. Nobody said a word. He just walked away. I suppose he felt a bit.......violated. I hope so. Seems fair. Haven't seen him since. He should be gone before long. No more just being one of the guys. My daughter said a local news crew has been stopping by and knocking on his front door a few times, but no answer. I guess he's drawing attention for something else also. Not much you can do about them. Making threats makes you the bad guy. The public exposure of their crimes is what they want to avoid. But do not let this guy affect your relationship.

Pipes for the 1st gens are pretty hard to come by these days. Jardines (loudest, with low rumble) used to show up on eBay once in a while but I haven't seen a set for quite a while. MAC (louder than stock, but nice low rumble) was another option, but they quit making them also. We did a group buy a while back and got MAC to make a few sets for us. Took about 8 or 9 months and did not go smoothly. So no more of them. Some of the quys here are fabbing up their own sets with glass packs, making the connections and brackets. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=53765 Then again, there is always the old "drill out the baffles" operation. muffler slip on issue

Ok, here's another idea. The fuel pump is behind the left passenger floorboard/foot peg mounting bracket. With the left side panel and the mounting bracket off you should be able to see most of the fuel line connections. If it's only leaking when the key is in the run position it would have to be a broken or damaged fuel line or a loose connection. You have the one line coming down from the petcock on the tank into the fuel filter and then does a 180 degree turn into the input of the pump. I've found mine leaking there once from the clamp working loose. (it only leaked with the bike running BTW) The line out of the pump is straight up the frame beside the overflow hoses then clamps into the feeder tree at the carbs. That line my be chafed or cracked. From what you are saying that sounds like a likely culprit.

Take a long look at the bike again from underneath. There are four black hoses that run from the tops of each carb (overflows) that run across the top of the engine, inside the frame and drop down right by the center stand and fuel pump. If you have a float sticking that is probably your leak. Drain your fuel bowls out to look for debris, tap the side of each carb fuel bowl with a wooden dowel or screwdriver handle to try to break loose the debris and then try again. Add some Seafoam to the tank to help clear up any sticky stuff. Let it work into the bowls and soak over night. It's doing it because when the bike is turned on the pump runs to fill the bowls. Without the needle firmly seated it just runs through the overflow. I doubt if there is any issue with the fuel pump itself. Pretty simple device. Let us know what you find. Mike

Oh boy.....here it goes. There is no real decent way to repair the engage. More than likely the hub itself is split. Springs can go bad and 72 tooth ring gear can scar up. Things that happen.... Random hooking up so the motor catches once in a while. Chattering noises where the rollers are skipping across the idler gear shoulder. Down right nasty hammering noises as it gets worse. And then the days when it catches the first time and does not hook up again when you are 300 miles from home. The voice of experience. I've lost two of them. Ya need to talke to Dano about his upgrade. Costs a little more than a OEM engage but you won't ever need to think about it again. I've got a full season on mine, and I do a LOT of starts every day and it never lets me down. Check it out. Won't regret it. 1st pic...split hub. 2nd pic....OEM engage. 3rd pic...Dano's upgrade. Coolant bypass valve

As a last resort I'd try a small pick in each side of the valve to try to pry it forward a bit. The o-ring is towards the rear so that should be out of the way. Stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway. Are you sure you got the entire screw out, right down to the tapered part? I know some have mentioned breaking them off. Sorry, I had to go for the simple stuff first. Some rust buster around the valve to break up the crude..... It might help a little to make sure the ball detent is turned away form the hole in the housing (at the top) with some oil in the hole........ You might shoot DesertRider a PM. He rode his for a long time with no screw in it at all. He hasn't posted back on rather or not he got his out to do the o-ring. If he has, he might have some thoughts. It took me a good 20 minutes to work mine out. Just wiggle work. Mike -
TCI Numbers

The 26H is for the '83 model only. The vac system can be modified to work. Dingy has the word on that. THe 41R is for all other years '84 thru '89 I believe. There will be differences in the actual part numbers as improvoment were made over the years but the 41R will work on all models with the double pickup coils in those years. The year won't matter. Coolant bypass valve

Ok ya got the screw out. Now you are going to have to find some channel locks or lock grips that you can get ahold of the front of the plastic valve with. You can rock it back and forth and gently work it forward, to the front of the bike. It will work out. Depends on how long it's been in there. Remember about the ball bearing (the detent) and the spring inside that valve body. Wrap a rag around the valve while you are pulling it out to make sure you don't have to go looking for it. Skydoc_17 has that lil kit with the new o-ring and hex drive screw. Not a bad idea. I put one in mine. No more winter drips. As far as filling the sytem, top off the radiator and replace the cap then check the over flow bottle. Run the bike until it gets hot and check the over flow again. It's best to top it off from there to get the system completely filled. Mike -

YES!!! There is a better battery for your Venture! http://www.bohannonbattery.com/html/deka/etx20l.html This one fits your bike. Get ahold of Skydoc_17. He handles them also. You CAN NOT find a higher quality battery for the bucks. AGM 12.8 volt. Tough as nails. AMERICAN MADE!!! I've had one for two seasons now. Sat for two weeks and still showed 12.8 on the meter when I hit the switch. Just sayin' ya know.......did I mention I like the DEKA's? Mike

Here are the pics from the listing Jack. In reading the listing and looking at the pic names it appears that they are saying the pic with the yellow light on is how it looks with the light on with the chrome lens in place. Humm......have to see it myself. The popular thing around here is the "black out" lens. Not impressed with them at all. Daytime.....hardly any light to be seen. At night.......way to little light. Hey Fxitdude........remember to post some pics for us.
